THESE TWO DESERVE ONE ANOTHER

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010 at 10:00am by

You all know Dale “Rage” Resteghini, right? He’s the music video director who somehow ended up managing and helping to sign Straight Line Stitch; then, when Vince wrote something negative about the band and MS readers chimed in to agree that they do, indeed, suck the big one, Rage actually started leaving comments here defending the band. Here’s a sample:

“I have been in ‘metal’ most of my entire life as a fan and professionally as a video director of over 250 videos…so I do have the cred, the respect, the understanding and a whole lotta ‘other stuff’ that makes my opinion the one that trumps all of yours.”

It’s good to know that he’s been into this kind of music for “most of his entire life” and not just most of most of his life, but I don’t know why the word “metal” is in quotes like that; did he used to be into Poison or something, and feels the need to let us know it wasn’t really metal? Whatever, not important. I shouldn’t question him. He has the cred and the respect and the “other stuff” that makes his opinion the one that trumps all of ours. Anyway, here’s another pearl of wisdom:

“Metal Edge and EAT a substantial Japanese music rag are interviewing the band for coverage…the buzz and support o this band is amazing so no matter how many rehashed hate blogs some of you want to throw into the mx…it just doesn’t matter as you can see and you will continue to see and hear throughout this band’s career!!!”

Well, I sure am glad that they’ve got Metal Edge on their side. I look forward to SLS’ July 20never cover story. But why did they eat a substantial Japanese music rag? Were they not given a per diem for some reason? You don’t think he meant “EAT, a susbtantial Japanese music rag, are interviewing the band for coverage,” do you?

And while we’re asking questions, if it “doesn’t matter” what the people on sites like this one say, then why do you think that this successful, presumably very busy dude was leaving comments on MetalSucks at 9:45 at night and 2:30 in the morning?

Sorry, sorry, I’ll shut up. Rage has the cred and the respect and… y’know. His opinion trumps ours.

Why the hell am I talking about this again?

Oh, right. Rage has been hired by Axl Rose to shoot stills for the band’s upcoming South American. tour, and to direct some videos for Chinese Democracy. So that should go swimmingly.

I mean, everything Axl says is gonna happen always happens, right? Like that amazing documentary about the original line-up’s Use Your Illusion tour. Rose hired that whole crew to follow the band around for months and film, and then he culled in the footage into You May Be Wondering What Documentary Axl Rosenberg is Talking About, Because it was Never Actually Fucking Completed. Terrific film.

And when Axl apparently told fans in 2002 that he was actually making three albums, with Chinese Democracy to be followed once a year by a new release for two years, Lord of the Rings-style. It felt so great, after finally getting to hear Chinese Democracy in 2008, to get ANOTHER new GN’R album in 2009! I can’t wait for the third, Still Waiting for the Fucking Second, this coming ain’t gonna happen.

And best of all is that video for “Better,” the first single from Chinese Democracy! Lars Ulrich was holding up its release for awhile, apparently refusing to sign a waiver or something ’cause he was in it for some reason, but then he finally signed and the video came out! And it was worth the wait!

This is also a good business move for Rage because Axl is such a sound partner. It’s not like musicians and staff (who are often one and the same, it would seem) are constantly quitting on him (because he apparently never fires anyone). And it’s not like he’s gone through managers* like he’s gone through guitar players**. And drummers***. And producers****. And it’s not like he’s constantly ending up in lawsuits with former collaborators. I mean, Robert John has been GN’R's official photographer since before they were signed, and he’s still with the band, right? In fact, he’s working on this project with Rage… isn’t he?

Yep yep. It’s gonna be nothing but smooth sailing for Dale “Rage” Resteghini from here on out, everyone.

And by the way, I looked into a crystal ball that can tell the future, and here’s the comment Rage leaves under this very article:

“I m making so much $$$ from this project that ur all just jealous. Whatever. This project will turn out great, as you will all c!!! I am too busy to comment on the haters. Bye until later.”

my opinion is that SLS is terrible. the couple of songs i’ve heard are garbage.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jeremy-Luckett/1384577212 Jeremy Luckett

Damn this Rage guy is a tool.

    • Discipleofthewatch

But he’s so ‘metal,’ and you can’t discount “the lotta other stuff” that causes his opinion to matter more than ours.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jeremy-Luckett/1384577212 Jeremy Luckett

So true. I’ve never met anybody as “metal” as that guy, haha!

  • Lordassenfroth

yea fuck rage and fuck axl rose

  • Toxteth O’Grady

Bravo. Best rant on here in a while.

I’m just glad to see that SLS hasn’t gotten around to reinventing metal as they promised to do.

  • Deth

That’s what I was thinking. SLS were supposed to be the next Metallica by the way Rage went off about them. That was two years ago – where are they now? Any bigger?

How about dismissed and forgotten? Their 12-15 year old fan base (then) is older and more mature now. It stands to reason that they would have moved on.

I’m sure SLS are great people and bravo to them for making some albums (albeit albums nobody buys). However, crappy music is still crappy music. I celebrate diversity in metal, in all its forms, but SLS were just hopping on the bandwagon of breakdowns and female vocals. They lost their identity and originality in a very overhyped and saturated metal sub-genre.

    • gojirasaurus

And if you dont beleive that they only got their moment in the (partially eclipsed)sun because of the black female singer, your painfully ignorant

      • Ali

        Who are SLS?

  • http://music.msn.com/superfans/heavy-metal/blog pdf

To be fair, METAL EDGE did, in fact, run a one-page story on Straight Line Stitch before going out of business. I know ’cause I assigned it.

Phil Freeman, former METAL EDGE Editor-in-Chief

    • DanDestructo

^ probably one of the coolest comments I’ve ever read.

is there anyone in the industry without a fuckin’ attitude?

    • PD

It’s no coincidence Metal Edge went out of business because of this one page story…
Now, to not be a dick, I agree with DanDestructo. Nice to see someone who’s got their head on straight

  • Corey

Ive seen SLS three time in concert, because they somehow keep adding themselves to the opening slot of every tour that comes through Knoxville. And every time, they get worse and worse.

  • Who Gives A Damn

    LOL, keep ‘em comin’

  • Cincitucky

    Dude must know no bounds.

Did a simple search of his name and someone took the time to create an online petition about stopping Rage in general, given common sense would tell you not to take it seriously. Rage was on that online petition arguing/commenting against people signing it. Ironic that he would sign a petition against himself to defend himself.

Must not have learned there is nothing to stop the unrelenting attacks coming from the internet’s anonymous.

  • HATEIFC

We had a direct support slot full US tour with Devildriver…this dude cut dez a deal and took SLS instead and that tour did zero for them…nice guy…also charged 30gs for one of our videos.

  • PD

One more thing…the “$$$” comment…fucker is clearly not Metal. Metal doesn’t = $$$. Metal is about talent and believing in your band’s sound. Success is not determined by money. Fuck this Rage dude so hard.

That particular comment (end of the article) was Axl “look[ing] into a crystal ball that can tell the future, and here’s the comment Rage leaves under this very article:”

Was a joke, not a real comment ;)

      • DidgeryDo

Yeah but the joke had an underlying point that is obviously true about Rage.

  • DemonicLemming

Anyone who thinks their opinion is better or more valid than anyone else’s opinion is a loser and an idiot, and does not understand the difference between “subjective” and “objective” and how those words relate to what an opinion is.

  • major

i want to tell this tool that his opinion is wrong.

  • Robotscythe

I laugh in the face of anybody who calls themself “Rage”.

    • King Cheezit

You get to call yourself “Rage” once your arms are triple the size and triple the skin tone of your hands, apparently.

      • Gaia

Yeah ‘Rage’ loving the hand tan their champ.

      • Aria

I was just going to comment on an unbalanced hand:arm tan ratio…
Anyway guys, we shouldn’t give him a hard time and all that.. after all, it must be a pretty tough life having to live with the sun shining out of your arse
Rage, that’s just my opinion… if you think it’s shining outta your armpits then it’s all good y’know, ’cause you’re trumps.

      • DidgeryDo

Isn’t it obvious? His can of spray tan was in his left hand lol!

  • B-dizzle

My opinion trumps Rage cause I said so, plain and simple

  • Truthfully

Regarding the Metal Edge editor…Gee, I wonder if buying advertising in a magazine is still how you get an article written about you???

    • http://music.msn.com/superfans/heavy-metal/blog pdf

Not when I was in charge, it wasn’t. In fact, we had labels complaining to our advertising department – “Why should we buy an ad? You never cover our bands!”

      • http://music.msn.com/superfans/heavy-metal/blog pdf

I should be clear, though, that it does sometimes work in reverse – I would tell the ad department to hassle certain labels if we’d reviewed every release they’d put out that year, and profiled half the bands, and we still weren’t receiving ad $ from them. But I chose to cover the bands I chose to cover because I liked ‘em, not because there was money changing hands. If it was all about ad sales, or what I thought would actually move copies, I would never have commissioned a 3000-word story on Manowar, to pick just one example.

        • Truthfully

          Fair enough….
As an aside, does anyone notice that last year the guy posted that he’s made over 250 videos and now he claiming to have made over 550 videos. Thats a pretty productive year. I’ve never heard of anyone making 5 videos a week for an entire year. Where in the world does he find the time to write about himself online and go tanning.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jay-See/726690352 Jay See

Sounds like Mr. “Rage” McButthurt would get along with the fellas from Rose Funeral.
What a douche; “don’t hate! we’re lyke totally awsum”. For a guy who’s supposed to be so busy he just causes himself to come off as some petty tool, trying to defend himself and his colleagues against anonymous opinions on the internet. Not to mention doing a very poor job of it…

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jason-John-Crispen/100000169530540 Jason John Crispen

speaking of rose funeral, they’re in town tonite. a “headlining” show. wonder if any card games will ensue.

      • http://www.gravatar.com/avatar/46e389eb8b79606050d3d447431ff6ac?s=80 Nate

My band is opening for their headlining tour next Wednesday. It’s going to be SO hard to not say anything to them about Uno.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jay-See/726690352 Jay See

I still can’t get over “my opinion trumps all of yours”…look up what an ‘opinion’ is, jack ass.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jason-John-Crispen/100000169530540 Jason John Crispen

the dude directed Da Hip Hop Witch, i think he knows a thing or two about metal!!!!

    • Genial Gentile

Hahaha!! I just looked this clown up on IMDB…Holy shit! This guy has been involved in some REALLY pathetic projects.

  • TurdFerguson

I thought that was Al Snow and i wanted a little HEAD.

  • TonyT

I hate that there’s even a post about this tool, talking shit about him is just gonna boost his ego even further. Please, lets just stop talking about this douche bag now.

  • http://www.last.fm/user/opeth027/ Kyle

How about an article about the German metal band Rage???

  • crapmcpoopin

Despite Rage’s connection to SLS, he’s still a better director than David Brodsky, and you guys love him.

    • Truthfully

Really? Did you not watch the nonpoint video? At least brodsky’s videos look metal, not like a hip hop retards interpretation of what he thinks “metal” is supposed to look like.
And you called him Rage….hmmm could you be friends with the guy??? Are you a Rager??? Admit it…your his mom. arent you?

  • Hammer_Smashed_Hurtt

Dude when did tank tops become cool again? Were they ever?

This Toolbox looks like the kind of guy who hits on 17 yr old girls in the Mall.

    And fuck his opinion.

  • AAAAAHHHHHHH

An old band I was in did a video with this guy; I don’t know shit about music videos nor did I really wanna do one. In fear of it turning out horribly cheese-rific….It did. They really pushed for me to wear studded leather bracelets and other hot topic crap. He would yell “Give me anger!!!!” and jump up and down while we did this whole thing; so It made it very difficult to not bust up laughing. he does make a lot of money because; the hard earned money of artists is frivolously thrown at this guy (by the label of course)

  • Rage

I m making so much $$$ from this project that ur all just jealous. Whatever. This project will turn out great, as you will all c!!! I am too busy to comment on the haters. Bye until later.

    • Clancy

      Well played sir

  • DidgeryDo

This Rage guy is an idiot if he thinks anyone is going to buy this “I’m just supporting a band I love” bullshit. In the same breath he mentions all ways his money is tied to this shit and it becomes blatantly obvious why he promotes the group so hard.

The ironic thing is that it was his promotion and douchebagotry was what made me want to stay away from SLS more then the negative comments posted at Metalsucks. What this cockwad needs to realize is that people will like what they like despite other people on the internet crapping on it. This is the contentious-as-fuck post modern metal scene where most people are going against the grain by liking metal at all and we are not going to look on with awe at Spray-tan-McChildmolester and his superior opinion.

All I’m saying is it would have been much wiser of him to keep his mouth shut.

    • DidgeryDo

I’ll also add that I don’t think promotion is inherrently bad. Still when your a douche you can’t help but
make the thing you are selling look worse. This guy does for SLS what GW Bush did for
      America’s image.

    • http://www.last.fm/user/Jugglemonkey Jugglemonkey

Lol @ Spray-tan-McChildmolester. Got it in one.
