ICP: SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL?

Earlier this week, MS reader “seasonswithered” e-mailed us about a story Nightline recently did about Insane Clown Posse, and, specifically, if they’re responsible for Juggalos who have committed violent crimes over the course of the past few years. seasonswithered promised that if we watched the video, “For the first time, you’ll be on [ICP's] side,” and now that I finally have gotten around to watching it, I can say that seasonswithered is right.

Don’t get me wrong: this music is terrible, and ridiculous, and the dudes in ICP are clearly only slightly smarter than an amoeba. But blaming them because some of their (even) less intelligent fans may have taken their lyrics too seriously is on par with blaming Ozzy Osbourne ’cause some kid shot himself, or Marilyn Manson for Columbine, or take your pick of times metal has been unfairly held responsible for some heinous act. If it turned out that there was a serial killer who turned out to be a huge fan of Cannibal Corpse, would you wanna see George Fisher and Alex Webster strung up by their toes? Of course not.

In other words: I may not respect what ICP does, but I respect their right to do it.

    I can’t stand ICP’s music, but I think they are smarter than people realize. They have been around for a while and keep making a lot of money from a fairly mindless concept.

    Over the course of the on-going discussion of Juggalos on this site, I never realized this sentiment was ever in question. I don’t think of you as an unreasonable, prejudicial person, so maybe I was just reading between the lines. Oh, well. Thanks for clearing that up.

    I love in the video, you can tell that they were cut off when they were making a valid point. Never a fan but I guess it’s their time to get the blame for this nonsense. I just wish some fucked up Nickelback fan would kill someone, then we can blame them for everything (even though I already do).

      I don’t think they were trying to make any valid points, which is why they were cut off. When asked about the themes of their songs and their lyrics they respond by calling anyone who takes them literally as a “retard.” Now, while that may be true, how is that really a response to a professional interview? This wasn’t some home video, no name, website interview (no cut intended MS) – this was 20/20! They don’t need to stay in character (if that’s what they were doing) and act all hard core.

      My presumption is that they are geniuses at attracking a strong fan base, but they have no book smarts at all and that is grossly apparent in the interview – thus they were cut short.

      There’s nothing tangible for some reporter to play psuedo-psychologist with, though. Not a large number of overly violent lyrics and imagery, and such. It’s too easy for them to make the conclusion, “Well, they listen to ICP, and ICP has violet lyrics, so that must be why they committed a violent crime.”

      Correlation is not causation, kiddos. Thinking otherwise is just sloppy science.

    but yeah, i hate ICP, I don’t understand the appeal of their music, but they have the right to do it, and I have the right not listen. If some kids decide they want to kill someone, I think people should stop looking to try to blame the music when there are obviously bigger issues that likely led them to do it.

    While it is their fault that they make music that appeals to the lowest common denominator of society, you can’t necessarily blame them for what their idiot fans do in their name. Plain and simple. There are plenty of Juggalos out there that don’t do much more than smoke weed and then head off to the night shift at McDonald’s. They don’t kill anyone.

    When I watched that on TV…my mom called and said, “I hate their shitty music…but in all honesty they remind me of metalheads.” Not only was I saying WTF…but how dare she compare us to them. Then she explained, “Think about it. Most of society thinks metal is shitty music that only appeals to retards.” She did make a point…coming from a woman that was a teenager back in the Black Sabbath days in the 70s and in her 20′s when Judas Priest and Iron Maiden came out.

    So I will say that although i hate their music…they are like the rejects among rejects. In no way shape or form on the same level of metal…but the retarded cousin in the family that has the best drugs.

    And journalism sinks to a new low! Yay! In all fairness though, this has been hashed out time and time again, and Axl listed the prime examples. In our society there are just people with no morality, who snap, and this is what comes of it. I love metal, slasher movies, contact sports, and video games, but I’m not out there with a hatchet chasing people down my street. These people were clearly imbalanced to begin with, and this is probably an easy cop out for what they did. Did ICP give an award winning response? No, but I wasn’t expecting one anyway. But the one “intelligent” thing they said, was, in so many words, if you’re doing these things, we don’t want any part of it. That seems to state that they understand they are just entertainers, and not leaders or commanders of anything. So eventually this will calm down, and then some other kid in a Lamb Of God t-shirt will be involved in a crime, and we’ll see Randy Blythe doing the same interview. It’s been done a thousand times before. All ICP needs to apologize for is their abysmal music…but I can’t expect miracles…

    I don’t know…I think the lady cop’s statement at the end of the piece has some truth to it. These guys are well aware of the fanatical devotion of their fan base, they also must know that the majority of that fan base are well below average intelligence.. or as Grover succinctly put it, the LCD. They literally have an army of the mentally deficient hanging on their every word. Maybe they do need to exhibit some responsibility. I mean, if you go around giving hatchets to retards, it stands to reason that someone is probably going to get cut.

    That aside, I think it’s funny Metal is always blamed for suicide, since I would more likely murder myself to a fucking Celine Dion song than even the worst brand of metal I’ve ever heard (Impaled Northern Moonforest comes to mind, acoustic black metal fails). But I guess that makes a metal head (or am I not “metal” enough for you bunch of blithering idiots?). Go on. Dis me, clowns. I said I liked ICP. I also like Roy Orbison, Christina Aguilera (a hot chick with a good voice, eat my shit), Obscura, Prodigy, Five Finger Death Punch, Gwar, Cephalic Carnage, Boz Scaggs, Brain Drill, Grateful Dead and fucking Slipknot. I just did what I swore I never would – justify your shitty taste in music by spitting out my own.

    Irony: ICP dress up like clowns, but all the clowns are on the online forums talking shit with $2 in their wallet and a string of failed music projects. Shit, I think I just insulted myself!     The problem is that ICP’s image is glorification of ridiculous violence through their music, just as a lot of rappers glorify being a “Gangsta”, inspiring even the most rural and/or country black (and white) kids to be something they are not. While I don’t feel they are to blame, I feel that they greatly influenced these fans that are already have mental issues and idolize these guys. Sadly, I think ICP should take some kind of initiative to explain to their fans (not some reporter on TV) that what they do is strictly entertainment and Juggalos should only be a fan-term and not used as gang relation. Most of these kids don;t have any other influence but what they idolize, as their parents are pretty much non-existent.

            Um, there are gangs of juggalos. Gang task forces don’t make shit up to target a band, or their fan base. I know people in the gang task force in Charlotte; they don’t have the free time to connect dots that aren’t there. It seems you’re just proving to everyone you really have no idea what you’re talking about.

            You’re intention is good, but it’s unnecessary; most metal fans will sympathize with you in the idea that music = violence. It’s just not the case. We’ve dealt with this in the past, the mainstream just found a new target to get people scared. We, by and large, don’t like your taste of music. It’s really not difficult to come up with, the way the fan base presents itself is ridiculous, and faygo isn’t entertaining.

            As to “metal not having gangs”, this is only partly true. The music isn’t binding people together, but if you find yourself near a bunch of white supremacists, you’ll find they LOVE skrewdriver and slayer. If you find yourself near a street gang, you’ll find they LOVE (some rap artist). So while the music does link them, it isn’t the music that is linking them(which is definitely the case with violent juggalos).

            I have to point out that the fact that they dress up like clowns, combined with many people being afraid of clowns makes this pretty funny IMO

    Honestly, my main reason for not liking a band or artist is usually their fanbase. For instance, Sublime: can’t stand that shit! But it has more to do with the douchey latecomers that attach themselves to the band than the band’s music. This is unfair to the band as it’s not necessarily their fault whom they attract as an audience. But I’m sure ICP must realize their fanbase consists of mouthbreathers and they capitalize on that. Their fans come to expect ignorant shit and that’s exactly what they provide for them.
    But for someone to take their lyrics seriously and go on some kind of violent rampage…well you’ve got to be a hopeless fucking cretin, I guess. ICP can’t be held accountable for that. Then again…lol, jugga-NO!

    I’m on ICP’s side even though I don’t like there music. It’s already been said but there music appeals to these dumbass kids and these kids are violent because of there own life. I know a couple juggalos and make fun of them all the time for being it and I do consider it somewhat of a gang i guess but they respond it’s like being a Juggalo is like being in the Kiss Army or Marilyn Manson’s Slaves but I see it as a gang because it’s a dependency for a group to be wanted into or feel welcome because they had issues as a kid (which is why they like that crappy music). But the bottom line is that it’s stupid people in general not just stupid Juggalos.

    I’m appauled after watching this “news” story. I don’t think I’ve seen such horribly biased reporting outside of Fox News. Blaming a band for acts of violence by their fans is ridiculous. If an individual is disturbed enough to commit murder and other violent acts the trigger for that action can be anything and more importantly will be just about anything. It makes no difference whether it’s ICP or Slayer or Metallica or Deicide, if someone is disturbed enough to commit a violent act then they are going to do it whether they listen to ICP or nothing at all. The gall of that reporter to sit there and essentially accuse ICP of being responsible is absolutely absurd. Its astounding to me that anyone can be so ignorant as to believe music, any music, can be responsible for a disturbed person’s actions. Disturbed people can and will commit heinous acts with or without music, movies, books or TV. Nightline should be ashamed for perpetuating this extreme ignorance. But if music is responsible I’d like to push for a ban on country music since it creates so many ignorant rednecks! Come Nightline someone needs to do a story on redneck wife beating and child abuse inspired good old fashion shit-kicker music. So sorry Nightline I forgot you wouldn’t want to disparage your own viewers. This kind of ignorance is disgraceful and only makes people fear something they don’t understand, Look out middle America the Juggalos are coming to get ya. Pathetic.

    The blame is always put on someone other than it should be…if a person listens to, watches or plays something violent then goes out and kills someone then its solely their fault. noone else is to blame..that person was fucked up before they got that cd, game, or movie whether it be due to bad parenting or lack there of, mental disorder or whatever. Its a show and theatrics and it should be looked at as so. If the kid’s not completely dumb then they can tell that.
