PERIPHERY WALK “THE WALK”

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010 at 3:30pm by

Holy moly, it is just raining new shit today! How many cheesy headlines based around song titles can we really post in one day? At least one more, it seems! ‘Cause Periphery have posted another new track, “The Walk,” on their MySpace page. And I think it’s my favorite Periphery song yet. Those guitars just get me going, dude. I’m even willing to forgive the song for almost sharing a name with a certain other metal tune. See, Suffokate? I can be flexible when you don’t suck.

Periphery’s self-titled debut comes out on 4/20 (which is shaping up to be a ridiculously good day for metal) on Sumerian. You can pre-order it in a variety of nifty packages (with t-shirts, hoodies, etc.) here.

    Horrible vocals.

    • STEVEm

Yeah, I’m really disappointed with the new guy’s vocals. They’re just not sitting well with me. The hopes for this album have quickly faded away ever since Chris left.

  • Deven

    Not really impressed… at all.

  • Clint

This band is great. They just need a better vocalist. This guy sounds like shit. End of Discussion. Don’t try to do heavy vocals if your strength is in singing. If they got one of the guitarist’s to do vocals they would probably be twice as good as these vocals. Which is unfortunate, because those guitar tones as great.

    • Sambo

Sorta like what Scar Symmetry did? What SS did was smart but it doesn’t compare to Christian’s amazing screaming and singing. At least Periphery are only getting started and have less chances of disappointing fans at the moment. Scar Symmetry ruined themselves.

      • ITTOA666

SS really need Christian back. His vocal melodies made that band what it was.

  • fightingmike

Yeah, i like the other new track better too, because of the vocals arent that great :(

  • Sambo

I like it. The Walk has always been a great song in my opinion.

  • Rob

I hope the album doesn’t end up being a collection of songs Bulb has had on his Soundclick for two years already.

And I agree, not terribly fond of the vocals on this version.

  • GoingDeaf?

If I wanted to listen to Meshuggah, I’d listen to Meshuggah. I mean, I know as musicians we all wear our influences on our sleeves to some degree, but can’t you have enough creativity to blend in at least ONE other band’s style into your sound?

I can see the MetalSucks exclusive interview now:

MS: What are your primary musical influences?
    P: Meshuggah
MS: Any other bands inform your creative direction as a band besides Meshuggah?
    P: No.
MS: Thanks! Love the new album!

    • M.

In the words of Devin Townsend “you can’t be Meshuggah”. many try, but no one has that oddly heavy/hypnotic trance like sound that they have.

On a side note, these guys sound like they could evolve into something interesting. Oh and if Jens Kidman screamed over this I’d love it lol.

      • mike

These guys are by no means bad, but the only Messhugah “clone” band worth giving a shit about is Textures – and they have progressed considerably since their Meshuggah worship debut Polars.

        • sjoerd

anyone who uses the term meshuggah clone is an idiot

    • http://www.heavyblogisheavy.com/ Alkahest

There are more blatant Meshuggah ripoffs out there. At least Periphery does something different and put a fuckton of melody over the mathy groove.

      • GoingDeaf?

I haven’t listened to any other songs than this one, but I didn’t hear a “fuckton” of melody over the groove. Meshuggah almost always have some sort of melodic guitar line going on under their riffs, so again.. NOT doing something different.

        • Watty

Don’t like Periphery, check out Misha, who writes most if not all of their material. He cites influences much more musically diverse than Meshuggah…

This is not one of their best songs at any rate…

  • DecrystallizingReason

I’ve tried, guys, I really have, but I think this band is “pretty good” at best. The consensus seems to be that the harsh vocals suck and the clean vocals are good, and I definitely thought the same thing.

  • Geetarz

Djent is the new craze! I mean I get it, its a different sound, but Meshuggah did it first and they do it better than anybody else. Bands wanna take that signature “confusing riffs” or whatever you want to call it, and blend it with melodic shit. Its cool to hear what band come up with, but Meshuggah will always be the king.

  • Zac

The Bulb demo version of this song was much better, especially with their bassist performing the vocals. I’m assuming this is their main vocalist on this song and not the bassist, but he really sounds weak in comparison.

“A French Doorknob is when you stick your balls in the girls vagina and she sucks ya cock… cooock… cooooock… coooooooooooooock…”

    • Strapping Young Lad

hahahah, i love that version. I’m pretty sure that was actually Chris in that version to be honest. I have an older one with even older vocals, and I’m pretty sure that’s the bassist.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Byron-Ward/797615124 Byron Ward

Not the best song vocally… But I’ve liked what I’ve heard..

    Pre-ordered my copy..

  • Julian

Lol@ the wannabe thordendal/holdsworth solo, plagiarizing yet another facet of meshuggahs music and managing to sound like shit in the process.

  • King of the Internet

where do you guys get your info? the bass player never sang on the walk, ever. i’m pretty sure they put the walk up because they’re about to go on tour with fear factory and that’s what their retard fans understand, heaviness.

    • lybrium

so i guess the “non-retard” fans are the ones who like the singing?

  • Ziltoid

This band, like many others, tries too hard to be Meshuggah, and it’s blatantly obvious why they fail–they don’t utilize the drums as lead instruments. All of these shitcore bands try to be “cool” with the polyrhythmic stuff, but they just focus on the “heavy” guitar chugging, with the drums accompanying them. That’s not how Meshuggah works, and that’s why these pseudo-clones are all failing. Meshuggah lets the drum rhythms and patterns lead the song, while the guitars chug to the beat. It’s a small, but crucial difference that explains why these new bands are nothing compared to Meshuggah, and why Meshuggah is the only band to really “get” how to produce this sound without sounding like bro-magnon fools.

Oh yeah, these vocals are also atrocious.

  • orbital

Ugh, so much potential. Definately falls short though. No pre-order from me

  • GoingDeaf?

Just went back to listen to this song all the way through since I only made it like 2 minutes the first time. I can’t believe how pathetic this band is. This is a tribute band at best. They even copped the production style and guitar tones…. I mean, how creatively bankrupt can you be???

    Progressive, my ass.

  • Ben

By the way guys, you can preorder the deluxe edition and it comes with instrumental versions of all the tracks., if you dont like the vocals.

    • lybrium

You know what, I just might be interested in that, haha

  • evilfatguy

You know what really sucks about this band? The fact that I have to wait a fucking month to buy that album.
Yeah, Baretto was/is better, but this album will still be totally awesome.

  • http://www.heavyblogisheavy.com/ Alkahest

Holy Christ, it’s like I’m the only one who absolutely loves Periphery.

Although I do admit that Spencer’s screams are weak. His singing is quite strong though.

    • Strapping Young Lad

na I’m with you dude. I fuckin love these guys too. But yea, Spencer’s screaming is a wee bit on the weak side… but that range; he hits some pretty high notes there without going falsetto.

    • Watty

Nope, you aren’t alone…don’t know why all these folks are looking to slam them because they’ve been lumped in with the ‘shuggah-core bands.

    • http://infinitybasement.tumblr.com Jon Lewis

I’m with ya too, I don’t know where all these haters are coming from.. Still really looking forward to the record. The screams aren’t really that weak in my opinion, he just sounds a bit different than the others. When I saw them a couple of weeks ago the screaming was arguably his best asset onstage.

  • jtquake

Hmmm. First off, I like it.

Secondly, the new vocalist sounds a lot like the old vocalist from After the Burial.

Thirdly, this song reminds me a lot of Circle of Contempt (who I like), who is also on Sumerian. BUT coincidentally enough, MetalSucks (namely Vince, I think) thinks CoC is nothing special. Thus I have no idea why they put this band on such a high pedestal.

But I do not feel that this band is a blatant or fail ripoff of Meshuggah. Sure it’s STRONGLY (and I mean STRONGLY) inspired by them, but I can certainly tell that this is Periph, and I can tell that Mesh is Mesh. (Mesh is still much better ofc, but that’s beside the point.)

  • Zakk

Shut the fuck up about Periphery “trying too hard to be like Meshuggah.” Meshuggah is an amazing band, but the structures of their songs are completely different. Periphery adds a different kind of melody and progressive feel that Meshuggah doesn’t have in it. I’m not saying Periphery is 100% original, but unless you create another type of instrument, it’s pretty much impossible to be.

  • uLy

still can’t grasp why they insisted on having such a shitty singer. what crap vocals.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dan-Burton/784250631 Dan Burton

Bring back Casey Sabol on vocals and the Orbinator on drums. A couple of years ago this track was up, with a different mix and far better vocals. I’m still going to get the record, but its not what I thought it was going to be. The mix is too crisp and has too much high end, and unfortunately their current singer just doesn’t cut it.

    • Watty

      +1

Though Matt is still an awesome drummer. The vid of them jamming their live intro piece has him showing off just how much groove he’s got.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dan-Burton/784250631 Dan Burton

I gotta say though, I don’t really hear how Periphery are trying too hard to be Meshuggah. Ok, Meshuggah created a style, that has been emulated by a number of bands now. Every sound has its originators and bands tend to develop that style. No one ever says that Exodus sound too much like Metallica, just because Metallica developed that thrash sound, and Exodus, as an example, developed it further. I believe that Periphery are far more influenced by Sikth, with Meshuggah as an obvious side note. Despite all of this, I’d much rather listen to Periphery than some of the other bilge that is passing as metal these days.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dan-Burton/784250631 Dan Burton

And in reply to myself, Meshuggah’s first two records ‘Psykik Testbild’ and ‘Contradictions Collapse’ couldn’t sound any more like a more technical Metallica if they tried. Seriously, if you haven’t heard them, take it in… and I guarantee that all of the kids above will eat their words.

  • http://www.cutch.ca Cutch

Spencer’s screaming does not have as much low-end resonance as the other singers, it’s true, but that’s simply because he’s a smaller dude. However, I think his smaller size is also what allows him to hit those soaring vocals that (Chris had trouble with, and) make Periphery sound different than Meshuggah. So it’s give and take. He sounds so much more like Casey Sabol than Chris did, and that’s what this band is meant to sound like haters or no. In addition, (and even accoring to Casey Sabol himself), Spencer’s a better live singer. So… yeah. I’m stoked for this record, for the record.

  • lybrium

Honestly I like this song a lot better than the one that was on that canadian music week player you guys linked to. This one is just so focused and visceral, fuck yeah. But, the vocal problem remains, which seems to be a common plague with sumerian records, I mean The Faceless are wicked, but the vocals could be approached in a way that lends to their sound better, same with all shall perish, although their last album had improvements in that category, these songs seem like flawed masterpiece’s because of the vocals, no matter if they are good or bad, they just don’t do the song justice.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lance-Zeran/100000142665110 Lance Zeran

Yeah, vocals for The Faceless are fucking awful.

I really like this band, and the only thing I don’t like about them is the guitar tone. Meshuggah has great guitar tone, and Periphery just copied it. I just thought it was kind of pathetic.
