OTEP’S “RISE, REBEL, RESIST” VIDEO: SARAH PALIN GETS TRAPPED IN A SAW MOVIE

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010 at 11:00am by

There’s a lyric in this song that goes “I feel uninspired,” and watching the video, I know what Otep means. I really, really want to like her music as much as I like her (our politics are very similar, although I suspect she’s even further left than I am), but what a mess of metal video clichés, and what a lousy song.

And no one hates Sarah Palin more than I do, but… really? A revenge fantasy? Couldn’t they at least of hired someone who actually does look kinda like Palin, like Tina Fey (okay that may not be realistic) or that chick who played Palin in the porn parodies (I have a feeling she would have been available)? If you were gonna give her a facial anyway, might as well have had someone who does those for a living!

I also like the idea of being into a lesbians music, so it also saddens me it’s so terrible.

    • The Great Danton

Try Tegan and Sara. They are two twin lesbians, one of the few indie rock groups I’m into.

    • Lucifer Sam

hey its no different thank listening to rob halford…. although it is kind of a bust knowing she not into the sausage…

wow…..that was boring…her music is consistently awful

  • cougar party

Don’t people realize if we stop talking about Sarah Palin that she’ll probably just go away (or at least be relegated to a pundit on Fox News)? I’m starting to get the feeling that people like Otep actually like having Sarah Palin around. It gives them purpose.

  • CHUMBAWUMBA

It’s a shame these musicians are being held down by Otep.

i appreciate Otep’s effort and all, i really do.

    but their music saddens me.

I really like Otep’s music, but I have to agree with you about this video. It’s just like watching other Otep videos, like Warhead, Breed (Nirvana cover) or even the previous one, Smash the Control Machine. Also, I should say the same about the album itself, who is the same ol’ Otep, despite of some inspired moments. As you said, “Otep’s new music sounds like Otep’s old music”.

Cliche, melodramatic music for depressed, self-absorbed teenagers. Kind of like Slipknot, I guess.

  • lkgf09

otep = god awful. She hopes she can one day achieve mediocrity.

  • DemonicLemming

Otep’s first cd was decent. Since then, it’s consistently gotten worse and worse as she’s become more and more overtly political. Fuck politics in music, and fuck people who think it belongs there.

Also, fuck Palin, Obama, Beck, and Biden. Politicians in general can go fucking rot. Except for Ron Paul, he’s cool. Why Palin is popular, I have no idea. If the R’s actually put effort in voting for her – in any capacity – in 2012, it will simply show they are complete idiots. Seriously, Palin told the Tea Party they need to “decide and either vote for a R or a D”. Hey, dipshit, the entire PURPOSE of the Tea Party is because they don’t want to vote for an R or a D who will be nothing more than another toe-the-line generic party member. She’s as qualified to run for president, or VP, as Obama was. If the R’s vote for her as president, they won’t be able to bitch that the D’s put an utterly unqualified person in the presidency – they’ll be doing the exact same thing. And fuck Obama, but that should be self-evident.

    • cougar party

Your onto something here, Demonic. Of course, you really can’t blame the Dems for putting Obama in office. I mean, McCain is a terrible candidate who ran a terrible campaign and Palin is a fucking retard for obvious reasons. Of course, it was ridiculous how people actually believed Obama was different than the rest. I guess after 8 years of Bush fucking everything up, people were desparate and ready to believe anything. If the Republicans nominate Palin in 2012, it will be political suicide for the party.

      • DemonicLemming

The Dems didn’t really have anyone….Biden is a caustic fuckhole who doesn’t even deserve to be in DC (and that’s saying something) and Clinton is nothing but a constant-PMS bitch. I guess someone heard Obama talking in an elevator, though “Goddamn, if he says what we want him to say, people will believe him” and grabbed him as their presidential candidate.

Bush gets a lot of shit he doesn’t deserve. Katrina was a mess, but that was because FEMA had never really been tested (and the state governor and the mayor of New Orleans fucking everything up didn’t help either), so Bush couldn’t have fixed anything there. Afghanistan was justified, but I think we pursued the wrong military policy there, and while Iraq was, morally, a correct war (Hussein was a sadistic despot, after all), I think we should have sorted things out in Afghanistan first. TARP was a fucking fiasco, as was the Patriot Act (but the funny thing was, when it was enacted, I distinctly remember a lot of people saying, “A little loss of freedom for security is well worth it!” but their selective amnesia is kicking in and now they say Bush was a fascist for enacting it). Bush wasn’t a great president, but he wasn’t terrible (in objective retrospect)….we seem to have been stuck on a track of meh presidents for quite a while now.

Politics in America is really completely fucked up in almost all aspects, though, and anyone who believed the campaign promises of someone who had spent less than, what, 3 years in DC and claimed he was going to “end the partisanship” deserves what they got. Bad thing is, everyone else has to suffer with them.

        • beardy

          NADER NADER NADER!

        • cougar party

I agree with you that the Bush bashing got so bad it started to feed off itself and while he was a shitty president, he wasn’t some maniacal, evil mastermind. The Katrina debacle is more the fault of the local and state government for not being prepared at all. Although He’s defiinately one of those scary, hyper-religious “God has a greater purpose for me” Christians.

My main problem with Bush is the Iraq War. WMD’s or no, I really don’t give a shit. I’m not interested in fighting wars for foreigners, especially ones that we were not prepared to fight when we started. Thousands of people have died and we’ve spent billions of dollars, for what? Iraqi Freedom (whatever that means)? He hijacked Americans vulneralbility after 9/11 and focused it on his pet project, killing Saddam all the while we were not gaining ground in Afganistan against the real enemy because we are fighting the wrong war in Iraq.

That in it self is deplorable and so fuck Bush. No more war mongers.

          • DemonicLemming

The thing with that is, if shit had started to get bad in Iraq, like it did back in the early 90s between Iraq and Kuwait, the international world would start screaming about how America hadn’t intervened before bad things started happening. We’re really screwed by the world either way – if we do help, we’re viewed as occupational, imperialistic invaders; when we don’t help, we’re looked at as the arrogant prick nation that is the most powerful on earth, but can’t be bothered to help the small, poor nations. Hell, look at the Haiti event – the French tried to say we were occupying the country when we sent troops to aid in organisation and supply, but if we hadn’t sent aid, the world would have condemned us for being the closest powerful nation to help Haiti, but we didn’t.

I don’t think we should have gone into Iraq with the Afghanistan war still going, and I think in 15 or 20 years, we’ll look back on it as a mistake, but only because of how we handled things after Saddam was captured. Doesn’t matter what we do or put in place, as soon as we leave, things are going to go to shit again – maybe not as bad as they were before, but that area of the world is basically nothing but a perpetual turf war between different factions. The Iraqi kids love the GIs over there – I have two friends, one an Army guy and the other a Marine – who both have great stories about interacting with the kids over there, but the thing is, unless we maintain a constant presence there, kids who don’t know US soldiers will likely buy into the propaganda of US troops being evil/imperial/anti-Muslim/etc because there’s absolutely nothing to show them it’s not true. Think cultural censorship instead of state censorship. However, if we keep a constant presence there, we’ll come to be viewed, even more than we are now, as an occupational force. I think the viewpoint of the average Middle Easterner is so alien to that of the average Western person, there’s never going to be full reconciliation between the two cultures, and I don’t think Americans have really come to that realisation yet. The only mitigating reason as to why we can’t completely remove our presence in the Middle East is because of the oil supply there. It’d be great to sit back and let two idiot nations go into a secular war over a couple acres of arid dirt and rocks, and ensure they don’t start playing with WMDs, but if a country who hates America wins out (and we like to forget that the Middle East has really historically hated Europeans and by extension Americans, and America in general for being the complete antithetical culture of most Muslim countries) and gains control of large oil reserves, things are fucked. That sort of starts to get into world economy and the complete farce it is, so I’ll stop there.

Was getting rid of an insane dictator with access to WMDs a good thing? Yeah. Was the follow-up to that event completely fucked up? Utterly. I don’t think all the blame can be given to Bush for that – the military commanders are the ones running the show over there, even if Bush is C-in-C, and it would be analogous to blaming a school principal for a student failing when the student has a shitty teacher. It’s partially the principal’s fault for not keeping closer tabs on teachers’ abilities and student thoughts about those teachers, but it’s also the fault of the teacher for being incompetent. If that makes any sense in a comparative way to Bush and Iraq. I’m not a proponent of the US as the World Police with a presence in every third-world country, but I’m not an isolationist, either.

    • SolaceInNothing

Well first of all, I agree. Fuck me indeed…

But how does politics not have a place in music? Music is about passion, and people are very passionate about politics. Some bands like to scream and growl about real world issues and not fantasy “Lord of the Rings” bullshit…

      • DemonicLemming

Let me rephrase a bit, since I’m not working now….I’m not against politics, in general, in music. Overall tones, sure. RATM, as much as I dislike them, did that – you knew they were uber-leftist Guerra-worshiping retards, but they kept it pretty general. A lot of their songs were politically charged, but you could play something like Guerilla Radio and stay pretty politically-neutral. Otep never really addresses any real-life issues….it’s just your standard ultra-liberal bullshit with a “I’m a hardcore metal lesbian chick” patina slapped on. What makes it really funny is that while she espouses all these “destroy the government” and “fuck Republicans” ideas, she backs the Democrats, who are pretty much on par with the R’s on denying specific personal freedoms they don’t approve of. Repub’s dont want abortion, Dems don’t want people to be able to own or use guns….the list goes on, but that’s a general example. If Otep REALLY wanted to “destroy the control machine,” she’d be a libertarian, not a left-wing ultralib.

        • SolaceInNothing

Ahh well said sir. I totally see your point.

  • Zack

    Horrible band…so bad

  • http://twitter.com/iheartsnuggles iheartsnuggles

When did Otep turn into Deborah Harry?

  • Metalguy

Could someone please, UNBIASEDLY, explian why she is so hated

    • Genial Gentile

Would saying that her music simply isn’t any good qualify as unbiased?

      • Jason H

        It should.

  • iolanach

Is there a bigger bunch of talentless cunts then Otep? I seriously doubt it.

    • Jason H

      Disturbed?

  • SolaceInNothing

Jeeze, I dont think the song is that bad…

  • CYN1C

When will they let Nu-Metal RIP ?

  • Sambo

The song was OK but the music video was really good. You don’t see too many of those these days. Usually OT3P throws some good videos onto the table.

  • mike

    LAME!
its not 2001 Nu-metal douch bags no one goes to these shows that doesnt smell like cat piss

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jeremy-Sanchez/512283152 Jeremy Sanchez

I love Nu-Metal and that song kicked ass.

    That’s right.

  • Igottawocket

I love(d) Otep. Now I’m pretty conflicted. The new album is far from impressive, whereas the one before it was awesome. This video and song are pretty weak, I mean in comparision to the Warhead video this is nothing.

    • Skitz

I agree, I was late to the table, but I became a huge Otep fan after listening to The Ascension. This follow-up is much weaker. On the other hand, it takes a huge talent to put out great albums consistently, and artists like that are few and far between.

  • http://the-crime-in-your-coffee.blogspot.com orlandofurioso

I don’t like Nu-Metal but I’ve always liked Otep. True this video isn’t exactly unique but it’s nicely done and well edited. Besides war and destruction never gets old.

  • http://www.facebook.com/sarahpalin Sarah_Palin

i can’t believe someone would make a horrible horrible video like this, showing this vulgarity that runs in our country. if i wasn’t so busy keeping an eye on Russia, i think i’d fly right down to this “Metal Sucks Mansion” and have it removed from our sweet nations soil. you are all spoiled perverts who need to learn about respect towards women… filthy, filthy pigs…

  • Evan

her music has gotten consistently worse. It was great in the beginning when she was just singing about how her dad screwed her over, and early on it wasn’t even really nu-metal…but now it’s all the same political nu-metal bullshit.
