“BEYOND OUR SUFFERING”: AS I LAY DYING BRING THE HEAVY

Monday, April 5th, 2010 at 12:30pm by

Two minutes of As I Lay Dying’s new song, “Beyond Our Suffering,” are now streaming, and I gotta say: it sounds like the heaviest thing AILD have done in some time. Not that these dudes haven’t always been heavy, but the beginning is straight-up death metal, man (and anyone who says otherwise is just being a prejudiced ass wipe). The breakdown at the 1:29 mark is more in the metalcore vein, but then Nick Hipa takes a quick guitar solo which is pure shred. I wanna hear the rest of this song! It’s a frickin’ scorcher, man.

“Beyond Our Suffering” comes off of As I Lay Dying’s new album, The Powerless Rise, which Metal Blade will release on May 11. You can both listen to the song and pre-order the album here.

    YYYEEEEAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH XD

    SOUNDS FUCKIN’ GREAT!!!!!

  • nayon

The new trend is deathcore, so obviously they’re gonna make a deathcore song.

    • crapmcpoopin

nothing in this song is remotely deathcore.

    • stu1

OK, you know that they’re much bigger than any “deathcore” band out there, right? Like infinitely bigger. Why would they change their sound to follow a trend that’s smaller than the level they’re at? Does that make ANY sense to you?

  • http://none terrenceMaddox

These dudes have their recording shit well together. sounds pretty fucking awesome I gotta admit.

  • UH

“The new trend is ‘deathcore’ ”

I don’t know what the new trend is but im pretty sure its not deathcore.

    Sounds pretty solid though

  • msv81

Never been a huge fan of the band but this new song sounds fucking great.

  • Matt

I love that he called it “straight-up death metal”. I guess I’m just showing my prejudice!

  • Dysenteric

So, according to you, I’m just being a prejudiced arsewipe. Okey-doke. It’s just that I was listening to Rottrevore today, and when I hear “straight-up death metal” being used to describe music, I expect said music to sound like Rottrevore or anything else that matches the description of “straight-up death metal”.

This new snippet has been listened to by my good self and found wanting in some all areas. Not intimidating, not fierce, not bloodthirsty. It’s probably because I’m a prejudiced arsewipe, apparently I need others to tell me so. Jesus Christ.

    • http://lavidastrangiato.blogspot.com/ Jake Strangiato

Dude, Rottrevore is the shit! And yeah, there ain’t anything death metal about As I Lay Dying.

      • Dysenteric

        They are the shit.

Hmm. I tried to do some strikeout code for the word “some” in the second paragraph. It seems to have failed. What the fuck HTML works here?

    • Isaac

I agree completely. That is CERTAINLY not death metal… maybe melodic death, though (MAYBE).

  • GoingDeaf?

ha ha ha…straight up death metal? Come on!

Sounds good, though…. never been a fan of this band but this new one might be worth a look.

  • permafrost

That’s pretty good, but “Within Destruction” off of the last cd was maybe more aggressive and heavy. Splitting hairs? Yeah, but again, this new track sounds great!

  • GayHateMachine

Sounds like Lamb of God to me, yo.

  • hi my name is mark

*in before Ziltoid rages about what is and is not death metal*

  • Ryd1ZZ

What a tease! I can’t wait to hear the rest of the album.

  • KC

I think there was too much hype generated before I streamed the song because honestly, its not heavy. I’ve heard lots of (insert stupid word here)-core bands that are much heavier than that. If this is your definition of “straight up death metal” then I really want to know where bands like Suffocation and Cannibal Corpse fall into genre wise.

  • RayRay

WHY WONT THE PREORDER WORK!????????????? And this sounds amazing. One of my most anticipated releases of the year ( followed right behind by All Shall Perish)

  • builtforsin

Got a metal band with a large promotional budget? Metal staple that is easy to market?

NEW ALBUM = HEAVIEST SHIT EVER.

This sucks, generic, chugga chugga single note pull off, chugga chugga.

They will however, sell a lot of Tshirts at Hot Topic.

“*in before Ziltoid rages about what is and is not death metal*”

    • Ziltoid

      I am ready to rage…

  • pancakebullet

it ain’t that heavy or original
it ain’t that aggresive as death metal
    it ain’t death metal
sounds like a slowed down version of through the eyes of the dead
    sounds like deathcore…

    • pancakebullet

      it ain’t aggresive as*

  • crapmcpoopin

sounds like Austrian Death Machine to me.

  • Justin Sane

sounds better than the old stuff, simply since his vocals are more understandable… better production? better screaming technique? don’t know, but it sounds better than the older stuff, and much better than that deathcore bullshit where all you hear is raa raa raa rooooaaar over and over with no intelligible words.

  • Brutalizer

Heavier? It sounds exactly like the last album. Fuck MetalSucks lacks knowledge of good bands.

  • Kevin

Axl is getting dumber and dumber by the day.

You have listened to death metal right?

  • happysam

    DEATH metal?! ummm…NO.
A differing opinion is not necessarily prejudiced ass-wipery.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Daniel-Toy/193302066 Daniel Toy

I’ve always found AILD to be a step above the rest of the mediocre metalcore crowd. This song is keeping me excited to keep listening to them. Their last album they really stepped away from the traditional metalcore formula, and I hope this album keeps going in that direction.

    • rupert

      fuck yeah

  • Ziltoid

You honestly have no clue what death metal is, do you? Well, this isn’t it.

Go listen to Morbid Angel’s Altars of Madness on repeat until you wash this filth out of your mind. Maybe you’re the prejudiced ass wipe for consistently not knowing what death metal is. If I recall correctly, you said that Matt Heafy did “classic death metal vocals” on the new Trivium track:

    http://www.metalsucks.net/2010/03/01/a-track-by-track-review-of-the-god-of-war-blood-and-metal-ep/

You really need to actually listen to some real death metal sometime. Then you’ll abandon this metalcore drivel once and for all.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Emmanuel-Quinones/100000463639580 Emmanuel Quinones

i didnt know morbid angel was the only death metal band, or even the epitome

      • Ziltoid

Morbid Angel are the standard for what death metal should be.

    • some_guy

And who the fuck made you the expert on what is and isn’t death metal? I admit there are times when I agree with your words Ziltoid but you can really come off as a pretentious douche sometimes…

      • Ziltoid

“The” expert? No. An expert? Yes.

Who cares how pretentious I may be, I am correct. This site throws around terms such as “death metal” that it doesn’t even know the meaning of. I feel obligated to call them out on it. Maybe if they actually listened to Morbid Angel, Deicide, Brutality, Malevolent Creation, Dismember, Unleashed, Hypocrisy, Possessed, Atheist, Obituary, etc., then they’d know that As I Lay Dying has never made anything close to death metal.

        • Dysenteric

They actually did talk about Unleashed last week. Also, you forgot to mention that only old Hypocrisy will suffice. Their newer stuff is like a happier In Flames, completely sucks balls.

If you didn’t come across as a pretentious little git, more people may actually listen to you.

          • Ziltoid

I don’t care whether people listen to me. It’s their loss if they don’t.

    • GayHateMachine

Ziltoid is telling the truth. Haters gonna hate.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mark-Irwin/612231572 Mark Irwin

Yeah, you all should listen to REAL death metal like… SLIPKNOT!!!1

I, for one, think this track is pretty killer for what it’s worth and am looking forward to the new album.

P.S. Ziltoid, this is more doom than death but have you heard Mournful Congregation?

  • http://www.smnnews.com big_metal_al

Is it just me or is this album title “the powerless rise” completely stupid??

    • Dysenteric

Come to think of it… it is. Good observation, Al.
