DESPISED ICON ARE DONE

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010 at 2:30pm by

In a move that will make the people that despise them despise them somewhat less, Despised Icon are breaking-up. They made the announcement today via MySpace, and while Blabbermouth reports that the statement has since been removed, no DI fans should get false hope – we hear that the band is really, truly over.

Which I find to be a bummer. 2007′s The Ills of Modern Man was a example of how deathcore doesn’t have to suck; while I enjoyed last year’s more traditionalist release, Day of Mourning, a little less, it was still totally solid. And I saw these dudes annihilate a live audience once. It would have been nice to seem them soldier on.

The culprit seems to be the desire of the band members to settle down and lead more “normal” (for lack of a better term) lives, which is perfectly understandable – and at least they’re not splitting because they all hate one another now. But it doesn’t lessen my desire to hear super-heavy French Canadian metal.

The good news is the band is “currently working on setting up our final tours in Canada, USA and Europe,” and should remain together at least through the end of 2010. So we all get a chance to say farewell and have our day of mourning. (Sorry, couldn’t resist.)

Read the band’s complete statement on the matter here.

    Sad day :-(

Wasn’t expecting this, real shame as I just started really enjoying ‘Ills..’.

  • http://www.myspace.com/somethinglikesweet CJ

    Never liked ‘em.

    • Alex_P

Same. I don’t see what’s special about them, besides the fact that they’re the biggest wiggers in metal.

      • Alex_P

        Ok, barring Waking the Cadaver.

  • rayray

I hope the drummer pursues other interests in music because holy shit can he play.

    • Anselmowitz

Fuck yeah, the band can die in the arse so long as that guy keeps grinding.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Zach-Gates/14209777 Zach Gates

Def. The band: eh. The drummer: god damn.

  • Metalguy

Of course one of the good deathcore bands breakup. This sucks

    • John

      lol, good deathcore, funny joke

    • http://reaper-x.deviantart.com/ Reaper-X

The only GOOD deathcore band was Animosity.

    • Dysenteric

Good deathcore? That’s an oxymoron, like “heterosexual furry”, “emo grindcore” or fucking “love metal”.

      • http://reaper-x.deviantart.com/ Reaper-X

I agree. Animosity was like the piece of gold hidden in a pile of shit though.

        • Slaughterhouse

          All Shall Perish…nuff said

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Zach-Gates/14209777 Zach Gates

Hey man, lots of us straight furries love our emo grindcore.

        • Dysenteric

Why am I not surprised by that revelation?

If there was a love metal song about yiffing things would’ve gotten ugly.

  • KC

“Ills. . .” was a damn good album when it came out. They were ahead of the curve in the deathcore genre I felt. Always seemed to be more mature with their song structures. Plus their live show was great. Really energetic band that looked to actually enjoy their time on the stage. I met them once after Ills have first come out and they were all really nice guys that seemed genuinely happy to be in a band.

  • kmfcm

They should’ve broken up after the Healing Process

  • http://reaper-x.deviantart.com/ Reaper-X

This is the best news ever!

    • SolaceInNothing

Its people like you who are the reason why metal will never get the respect it deserves.

      • http://reaper-x.deviantart.com/ Reaper-X

oh? and Despised Icon were going to be the flag waving archetype for metals new found public respect?

        Please.

        • gnarlk

          nah nah nah nah
          nah nah nah nah
          hey hey
          good bye

        • SolaceInNothing

I never said that. In fact, I never said that I even liked Despised Icon…

          • Hobbs

Then why did you imply it?
What the original poster said wasn’t going to brandish the metal community at all.
It’s people like this band that tried to bring canadian wiggers into metal, they backed out, too brutal.
            Band was bad.

  • Igottawocket

    darn?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Aaron-Camp/885315541 Aaron Camp

These guys had some of the coolest breakdowns. I’ve really kinda grown outta the whole deathcore genre but I enjoyed Ills of Modern Man quite a bit. Sad to see a good band break up but honestly….where was the progression. They would have just faded.

    • Hobbs

      What is a “cool” breakdown?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jason-John-Crispen/100000169530540 Jason John Crispen

for every band that whines about having a “normal” life there are literally 10 who would kill to be in there position and be on tour. maybe they’ll get their heads out of their asses when they do a farewell tour. having a 9-5 isn’t all that fun dudes, play metal while you still can.

    • http://jotun2graveland Nick

Except for some huge bands that can headline big shows (at least in regards to metal bands), bands like them essentially are on a constant touring cycle in order to make a living. While I’m sure it was quite fun for them at first, I imagine that after years of constant touring, they’re probably a bit fatigued.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jason-John-Crispen/100000169530540 Jason John Crispen

yeah, i guess so. still not like they were an unknown band still toughing it out in dives. i bet they’ll get 9-5s and end up getting the itch again. hopefully it’s not before they’re too old to come back and do it full force.

  • TXHellbilly

I wasnt ever a huge fan, but I would check them out live if they come close just to see how their live show is.

  • M.

I’m actually not super surprised by this, I figured something was up after the last song “Sleepless” on “Day of Mourning”, I mean look at the lyrics:

“Another morning when I feel more rotten than alive.
The reflection in the mirror across the room shows that I’m just another useless being, head down in a tobacco haze with a bottle of broken dreams in my hand.
I wonder if I was just gone, would anyone miss me?”

They were hinting at this I think.

    • stu1

Way to go deep and miss.

      • M.

I know there’s more to those lyrics than just that, but it’s a little coincidental.

      • builtforsin

        lawl

  • Honeynutzz

    Sad face.

  • ferocious_fetus

used to hate on this band because:
    they’re wiggers.
I didn’t like the fact that they had two vocalist who both wore stupid hats.
but most importantly, I’m stubborn and like to hate things I don’t fully understand.

I’ve grown to appreciate their music/talent over the years. “MVP” off their last record is one of my favorite songs…ever. I wish I had jumped off the hater train sooner but hopefully they do one last tour and I can watch Alex grind the fuck out of his drums.

    • eric

what? liking a band for the music they make?

      that’s preposterous!

    • kmfcm

      oh boy. . . . . .

      your wigger comment reminded me
. . . . . .this probably means they’ll spend more time doing “Crimson Syndicate”

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Bobby-Tims/1313713879 Bobby Tims

and nothing of value was lost.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Chris-Richards/531570093 Chris Richards

This is messed up. They’re from where I live, and their homeshows are amazing. Everyone here loves them. Not to mention they’re really nice guys. I’ll see them on their farewell tour(s), and I wish them luck in living their lives.

  • Sambo

I haven’t seen them once and I would really want to see them before they officially call it quits.

  • ITTOA666

They haven’t been any good since the second album.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Grant-LaBelle/674650483 Grant LaBelle

      They weren’t good then either.

  • Gunt, hey fat chick!

First time I heard this shit, was when I saw these guys with Aborted, Cryptopsy, and Suffocation. Was there equally for Aborted, Cryptopsy and Suffocation. They all brought their A-game, Despised Icon was a pleasant surprise. Fucking wicked show.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Luke-Darrah/1298952081 Luke Darrah

Good! These canadian wiggers sucked anyways!!

  • c-grind

this sucks. Ills was my fave album of theirs………….agreed on the drummer staying in metal though, he is a beast behind the kit

  • I, Monarch

First thing I thought after reading the headline was “Fuck yes!”

  • Matt52

I second All Shall Perish. While most deathcore is repetitive and annoying, some bands really stand out and push the boundaries. Even a band like Whitechapel can be appreciated for what they bring to the table. I can appreciate Death, Cynic and Atheist but sometimes I just like listening to an obnoxious (in a good way?) breakdown and listen to lyrics about dismembering females. There is a certain energy to alot of these bands that is really hard to describe. The same goes for SOME metalcore, I know everyone hates on things because they are in fashion, but at this point hating these two genres is a cliche in and of itself. Sorry I’m ranting but I wanted to get this off my chest. Cue the hatred….

    • Cajun

Sense! Finally someone who can actually not paint all deathcore with one hate sweeping brush.

Never did like Despised Icon though…

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jason-John-Crispen/100000169530540 Jason John Crispen

all shall perish rules. their guitar players can shred. bummer that chris is no longer with them though.

      • Hobbs

Whitechapel has 3 guitarist doing the exact same thing, playing shit breakdowns.
All Shall Perish is a shit band as well.

  • tobytobiasjones

    Thank God.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Deven-Marie-Laney/674055234 Deven Marie Laney

    Party at my house!

  • Bicro

    Son of a bitch.

Oh well, time to spin All For Nothing one last time.

  • eric

HERP DERP I DON’T LIKE A BAND SO THEY ARE OBVIOUSLY BAD DEEEEEEERP

    • Alex_P

      MERP A DERP.

Still don’t like ‘em. Sucks for their fans.

  • needly needly doo

the song eulogy on day of mourning has one of the heaviest breakdowns ive ever heard to date

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/William-Morley/618112437 William Morley

Great band, glad I caught them a couple of times, at least they put out some brilliant albums.

  • kmfcm

this made me dig up the Healing Process again

that really was a great album

consumed by your poison was great too (and had like no “core’ at all)

  • unearth

Good Band, check out Belay My Last.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Emmanuel-Quinones/100000463639580 Emmanuel Quinones

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • Blurgh

Too bad. I listened to the Healing Process on my way home from work for the first time in like, a year. Definitely one of the only two good deathcore albums, right alongside Animosity “Animal”. Never got to see ‘em. Makes me sad, even if their last two album were blah to me.

  • mike

My list of 3 good deathcore bands is now reduced to 2..

  • Jak

    Shit

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kim-Kelly/10515129 Kim Kelly
