EXCLUSIVE FULL ALBUM STREAM: SON OF AURELIUS’ THE FARTHEST REACHES

Friday, April 9th, 2010 at 5:00pm by

In my review of The Farthest Reaches, the debut offering from Son of Aurelius, I called the album “one of the strongest releases of the spring, and possibly the year.” This Roman mythology-themed record is just a BEAST – the songs are sharply written, the musicianship is top notch, the production epic, and even the cover art is insanely cool. Fuck that stupid 3D movie; this shit here is the real clash of the titans.

Good Fight Entertainment will release The Farthest Reaches this Tuesday, April 13, but you can listen to the whole thing right here, right now. Once you realize the sheer power of this thing, go ahead and order a copy here, and enter in our contest to win an autographed copy here. And while we’re on the subject, why don’t you read my interview with guitarist Cary Geare?

Now here’s the album…

    This sounds exactly like Obscura.

I know, it’s still pretty killer.

In other news, I’m going to the final OPETH 20th anniversary show tonight. Yes, I am geeking out.

I know, it’s still pretty killer though.

ANY HOW, I’m goin’ to the final OPETH 20th anniversary show tonight. Yes, I am geeking out.

Didn’t this album already come out last year? I thought they were writing all new songs.

    • Alex_P

Demo leaks on internet. Not band’s fault. Bad title. New mix.

      It’s been covered already.

It’s not bad, but one listen in, I can’t figure why you’d give it such high praise. It’s well done, and many songs have good melodies or are satisfyingly brutal, but I can’t say it’s changed the game.

Hmm, I like them overall, but the amount of coverage doesn’t seem to live up to the hype. The vox are good with the lows, but I think it’s the highs that are a tad annoying…great guitar melodies though!

  • Clancy

Sounds like 35 other bands. What’s the difference. I hear these guys, I hear Black Dahlia Murder (better), Arsis (better). Not much to talk about here.

  • M.

I’m liking this more with each listen. These guys sound like they could do something really cool with that Roman/Greek mythology idea, especially after hearing “Olympus is forgotten”.

Am I missing something with the shipping options for the CD? They appear to only offer UPS shipping and the cheapest option is ~$11.00 (for a $12.00 CD)??!!

Way to discourage the illegal downloading, duders…

“Merch Now” is their vendor. I’ve used vendor sites like this in the past and the reason why I stopped is because of the shipping prices you noted. It’s way too much and doesn’t encourage sales. It’s not the band’s fault though, it’s the vendor they’ve chosen who are gouging the price and taking too much profit. Some vendors only want to use UPS, assuming clients will prefer their higher quality service, but what I’ve observed (your case in point), is that they’d rather have a smaller fee using USPS.

Or, ya know, you could like… not steal… and go to the fucking store.

        • gibberish

But who’s to say whether or not they sell this at his local stores?

Natalie is a cunt who doesn’t understand that Aurelius’ new album won’t be in 90% of physical stores.

Good points, Mike. I’m just discouraged because I’d prefer the CD over a digital download, but I’m unable to justify the $23.00 total bill for one CD (when it’s not some kind of rare, obscure import). So I’m leaning towards iTunes, but that isn’t nearly as satisfying for a person like me that likes the physical product. I do like the service of UPS, but a single CD is the wrong use of it. Like you say, not really the band’s fault.

  • big_red01027

Just like Obscura, except without most of the badass, and all of the incredible bass playing.

Yakuza’s new track owns this entire album.

  • Steve O

Yeah, apparently the bassist for this band went to Berklee…

  • Steve Parsons

Hey look, another band with typical semi-melodic rifs with high and low vocals. Oh wait, they’re Roman Mythology based? THIS GENERIC BAND IS SUDDENLY ORIGINAL!

  • http://tfw2005.com Lumpy

i like all the instruments, and i like the deep growling vocals, but that high pitched awkward screeching just does nothing for me…

  • zombiericardo

Album of the year, no doubt in my mind. Yes, they do sound similar to all the other bands that you like that sound similar, but the quality of the songwriting is top-notch. This is the catchiest metal album I’ve ever heard, and it has no cheesy clean vocals whatsoever. The screaming is PERFECT. Never heard it done better.

  • SourDeez

This sounds like a considerably better version of the Black Dahlia Murder, who I’ve always wanted to like but never could. It might not be terribly original, but I’m hard pressed to think of a band that plays this style of metal any better. There are definitely some jaw-dropping riffs, like the one at the end of Olympus is Forgotten. I like how they’re incredibly technical, yet still display a great sense of melody and songwriting.
