TWO UNDER-APPRECIATED TYPE O NEGATIVE CLASSICS

Thursday, April 15th, 2010 at 4:00pm by

Much like our pal Anso — whose musings on Peter Steele’s death you absolutely must read — I got into Type O Negative a bit later than most. When I was a budding metal youth I heard “Christian Woman” and “Black No. 1″ on the radio often (then Q104.3 “Pure Rock”) and I really liked them… but for whatever reason I never dived fully into the deep, dark abyss of Type O.

It wasn’t until I returned to metal after a lengthy hiatus that I really started to appreciate this band via the metallic airwaves of WSOU, starting with “I Don’t Wanna Be Me” from 2003′s Anso-approved Life is Killing Me. It happened again when Dead Again dropped in 2007; “Halloween in Heaven” just hit that awesome Type O sweet spot. And hey, lookee at that… I even gave Dead Again 4 out of 5 horns when it came out; go me.

Enjoy these two under-appreciated latter day Type O gems.

Gonna miss your sweet deep soothing voice. Today is a dark day for all music.

  • Kazz

As somebody who was really young when Bloody Kisses came out, its hard for me to imagine hearing Type O on the radio, even if they weren’t really a brootal band. Either way, today I’ll definitely be playing a lot of their great music.

The station Vince spoke of, Q104.3, was actually a pretty awesome station in the tri-state area in the early 90s. While they didn’t play anything “brootal” per se, Type O, Danzig, Tool (before they blew up), White Zombie, Pantera, and a host of others were a regular part of their playlists. It was a sad day when they flipped formats…rock radio in NYC essentially died.

I wanted to post a link to my favorite Type O under-rated classic, “IYDKMIGTHTKY (Gimme That),” but I couldn’t find it on Youtube. Anyone? RIP Peter.

I remember Q104.3 as never quite being as awesome as it seemed like it could have been. Maybe too much Alice in Chains?

WSOU on the other hand kicked and continues to kick much ass. I spent much of my youth trying to get a good signal from 30 miles north in NY. Now I can listen all day at work 3000 miles away through my internet box.

Those are damn good songs and a damn fine album altogether. I was going to name the tracks I like best, but really I love them all (for the most part).

Sonofabitch, I’ve been thinking for a while now how much I wish these guys would have made more albums…now what we’ve got is what we’ve got. Good thing it’s all pretty much excellent.

Just realized how much more intense the song “Red Water” will be this next Christmas.

    RASPUTIN!

  • Octillus

I’m a much younger fellow, but I can tell you Life is Killing Me had a profound effect on my high school years.
So, while I of course traveled backward and picked up the material, the later-era is where my interests lay.

I’ve been at a loss for words all day.

I just hope Pete’s wry sense of humor came through when the time came.

  • Phil Anshlomo

under-appreciated by who? they’re two of my favorites!!

  • Phil Anshlomo

now blood and ashes is an under-appreciated classic!!

blood and fire. i’m a retard.

      • Kazz

Too Late: Frozen is another great track from that great album, and one of my favorites from Type O.

        • Steph

Yeah, both of these are great and tend to get overshadowed by the two untouchable classics at the beginning of the album.

  • kmfcm

Life is Killing Me is kind of underrated.

    “gimme that” is fucking classic.

  • kmfcm

    oh, by the way

SEPTEMBER SUN IS THE ONLY GOOD POWER BALLAD EVER WRITTEN

    • Phil Anshlomo

      fuck yes.

      • Tim P.

dude the final three mins or so of “September Sun” …

        just mind-shattering.

  • SourDeez

Great songs. And don’t forget Carnivore. I LOVE……to eat pussy!

  • Aaron R A

Just finished listening to all the Type O albums and then the “After Dark,” “Symphony For The Devil,” and “Dead Again (Bonus DVD)” discs. And I may be wrecked on red wine and a 12 pack, but goddammit, Peter. The world fucking sucks without you, already. You changed my life when I picked up “October Rust” in ’96. I wouldn’t be the same person if it weren’t for you.

  • tall_ted

Definitely a bummer. Pete was a great singer and funny as hell. Type O was always a great show. I saw these guys probably five or six times in college and had a blast every time.

  • V

Type O was truly brilliant for metal – they never took themselves seriously and just created, and people loved it anyway. I am truly sad to see a great mind disappear from this ridiculous world. I hope Pete is dancing with Bacchus.

  • Drunk Dude

Watched his appearance on Springer in remembrance tonight.

saw the band 15 times from 1996 till October of 2009. I watched the ups and downs of the band, met Peter Steele, was my favorite band since the early 90s and its sad that this happened. I think the worst part is that it seemed like Peter was getting better. If I thought there was a point he was going to die it would have been when I saw him with Carnivore or around that time when he mumbled every word on stage and looked like he was not going to live till tomorrow. I saw them in 2009 and thought he looked much better and was getting back on track, but maybe the damage was already done. A friend of a friends father is good friends with Peter, probably one of the few people that had an inside look at his life these last few years. Just this easter he got a card from his father of him and Peter. Its sad that he is gone now, but not shocking.

I have had some pretty good times listening to Type O. Bloody Kisses is a major part of the soundtrack to my high school years. When i first heard that album after it came out, i wasnt sure what i was listening to but I just knew that I liked it.October Rust came out and it took me a while to appreciate it but it is an all time classic to me at this point. what a great band, I was really looking forward to a new album with a newly focused and cleaner version of Pete. Good thing the band left us with some classics.
