WALK THROUGH THE “CEMETERY GATES” WITH EVILE

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010 at 2:30pm by

Tributes to Dimebag have become a bit passe in 2010 (or really sometime in 2008), but the lads in British thrashers Evile get a pass. For one, their cover of Pantera’s “Cemetery Gates” is awesome — vocalist/guitarist Matt Drake handles Phil Anselmo’s vocals with surprising ease, and the band does the Pantera classic justice in every other way. But then there’s the sad tragedy of bassist Mike Alexander’s sudden death last Fall, and the poetic coda that the last song he ever recorded with the band was a cover of “Cemetery Gates.” If that doesn’t give Evile a license to play this song and devote it to Dime whenever they damn please, nothing does.

Suckalo Jeremy Ruemenapp was on hand at Trees in Dallas a few nights ago to catch Evile covering “Cemetery Gates” during their support slot for Overkill. Check out his video of the performance (with really good video and sound quality!) below.

If you live in the Dallas area you can catch Deftones performing a surprise set on that very same stage tonight at 7pm! Ustream will have a live broadcast of the event, so be sure to tune in at 8pm EDT / 5pm PDT tonight to watch if you can’t attend.

If any band has a Pantera cover down pat, it’s those guys. Good work. The studio version is most excellent.

From Emo’s in Austin. The Evile dudes were cool as hell, btw.

Thank you! Far better quality than the crap quality video embedded above.

Yes! I was there, I was the dude in the Slaughter shirt. That cover was definitely one of the best parts of the evening, if I do say so myself, and it’s always good to hear a band cover a Pantera song that isn’t “Walk”/

Saw them at Dos Amigos in Odessa two weeks ago. Definitely a cool bunch of dudes.

I’m not a huge fan of covers, or Pantera for that matter, but this is a really good cover. Phil himself hasn’t been able to sing like that since the early 90s.

I was there last week @ Trees for Over Kill. Evile represented themselves well and honored Dime with a great cover. Warbringer pounded out a very good (but abbreviated) set with a lot of energy. Those guys look really young! God Dethroned tore thru a selection of blackened death that left everyone impressed. Vader was awesome! Peter is the Dave Mustaine of Polish thrash/death metal. Only time for a couple songs off Necropolis and a few classics before the mighty Over Kill destroyed Trees! Bobby ‘Blitz’ Ellsworth looked as fit and commanding as the last time I saw Over Kill live (1989). he is one of the all-time greatest metal front men and has a banshee scream that rivals anyone in thrash. I think I’m getting too old for this shit because my ears rang for 3 days after the show. The strobe lights synched up to the double kick drums nearly gave me seizures. The highlight was ‘Elimination’ from The Years of Decay. I encourage everyone to try and see this band live before they give it up. D.D. and Blitz deserve the respect.

Fuck, what a tour. I wish it didn’t miss Florida.

I always thought the best cover of Cemetary Gates was BTBAM’s one, from The Anatomy Of.

    • bethany

Totally agree. I would rather listen to BTBAMs cover than the original. I love it

  • Ben

I don’t know if I’d say he covers the vocals with ease. He just skips the final “gates”s. Which I’d think are the real vocal challenge in this song. It’s still a great cover.

  • bretton

    Ol looks hilarious

and I say that with the utmost respect for them, I met them when they opened for 3 inches of blood in kelowna BC quite a while ago. Awesome dudes.

disappointed I didn’t get to hear the epic falsetto wails at the end… I was waiting the whole time for that part.

I live in Dallas, and I’m getting pretty tired of every other metal band covering Pantera when they come through here. It usually feels like cheap pandering to the audience, like a vocalist saying, ‘Go Cowboys!’ Frank Mullen gets a pass though. :)

Having said that, this version was one of the better ones.

  • bethany

This is one of the better versions i have heard.. i am impressed.
