R.I.P. RONNIE JAMES DIO, 1942-2010

ronnie james dio

ronnie james dio dead

The rumors have been confirmed; Ronnie James Dio lost his battle with stomach cancer and passed away at 7:45am this morning. He was 67.

Rumors began circulating last night that Dio had passed, but his wife Wendy Dio shot them down late last night / early this morning with a statement saying “He is not doing good, but he is not dead.” Only a few hours later she posted the statement you see above at his official website RonnieJamesDio.com confirming his death. The death comes as a surprise to all of us as the announcement that he had stomach cancer came not even 6 months ago. Dio had planned to continue on with Heaven and Hell’s European Summer tour though the band recently canceled those dates; in retrospect, that could have been a sign that his condition had taken a sudden turn for the worse.

In Dio we lost an incredible man and singer whose influence on metal was undeniably profound. I don’t believe that it would be hyperbole to say that this is the biggest loss the metal world has ever experienced. Not much else to say here other than that this is incredibly upsetting news that will be felt for days, months and years to come by the worldwide metal community.

Please feel free to share your thoughts on Dio and his incredibly prolific metal career in the comments below and on Dio’s official Facebook page.

  • wtfhax

Biggest loss for metal ever. One of the greatest singers in metal and rock in general. Embodiment of the words “heavy metal”. Respected and loved worldwide from bands and fans from every genre.

    RIP Dio.

    • dave666

Agreed, we`ve lost one of the founding fathers and the greatest metal/rock/you name it singer of all time. I still cant believe hes gone. RIP Ronnie.

      • Mike Arose

I feel regardless of what your favorite sub-genre of metal is we all owe a huge debt to Dio for making such great metal songs to inspire everyone who sings and plays an instrunment. The biggest thing I can say about Dio not knowing him personally is that his music is and will always be timeless to me regardless of my age. The Sign of the Southern Cross is perhaps my favorite Sabbath song due to Dio being apart of it, and I will miss him deeply.

        • Anon

DIo’s singing and songwriting had a huge influence on NWOBHM and power metal. But no one could write fantasy dungeons n’ dragons lyrics like he did.

  • bubbles

terrible news. I still remember Holy Diver, the first time I heard it. Was one of those tapes that I wore out, along with Peace of Mind and Screaming for Vengeance. RIP Dio.

  • Miguel_G

Now this really fucking sucks. He was one of my favorite singers ever. Now he’s eternal.

Hope that this makes Ritchie Blackmore rethinks his life, quit doing that medieval nonsense and pick the electric guitar again.

    • Oleg

      Amen to that!

  • CountScottchula

Awful, awful news….Ronnie will be so missed by people the world over, and we all owe “the horns” to him! Raise the horns one last time for one of the great frontmen in metal history, hopefully he has gone to a special place…

  • Tetro81

A very sad day in the world of metal.
    RIP

  • Jonathan

It’s a loss, yes, but we have- in several ways- made him immortal. His music, what he meant to us, and his impact on what metal actually is…
He will be missed by many of us.
But he’ll still sing to us, even in death.

Rest in Peace, Ronnie James Dio.

Let’s not forget, the man who invented the horns. THE most recognizable symbol in metal.

    • Ryan Schutte

yeah man. i’ll be thinking of him every time i throw up the horns. his legacy will live forever.

he may be gone but his music will rock forever.

Terrible news. R.I.P., the voice of metal. :(((((

  • Gennaro

I can’t fucking believe this. I am still in shock.
6 years back, Dio was the second or third band that I listened. This dude meant so much for me, always. I can’t believe that is dead. It pains me to think about it. Hell, I am listening to his whole discography right now, and I swear I jsut want to begin to cry.
Sure, crying is not very tr00 or anything, but fuck, this news have hit me just so fucking hard.

  • Kram

Being a Metal God he will live on forever. May his body rest in peace.

  • Lady Death

Saw him live with Heaven and Hell on the Metal Masters tour a few years ago. I’ll never forget that feeling when he first started singing, the shock and awe that went through the entire crowd. In dying, his name went from simply that to the true thing. Ronnie James Dio will always be the one true God of Metal.

    RIP Dio.

  • Spanky

I raise my horns for you Dio, RIP and it was nice to see his wife say that he passed peacefully, again RIP, you are truly a holy diver

  • RomuluXX

I wish I could’ve seen him live. My buddies brother got us into Dio, and I can’t thank him enough for it. In the words of my friend “A world without Dio is not a world I wanna live in”

Rest in Peace Dio. You will be sorely missed

  • coldgraniticbliss

    Aaaaand horns at half-mast today.

    • Monkey Knife Fight

Indeed. The horns at half mast. RIP.

This is a true blow to metal…a king has fallen. R.I.P.!

  • J-Ho

I saw him in concert on the Heaven And Hell tour 3 years ago this month. Someone in the crowd had a tagboard sign that said “LOOK OUT!!!” on it and every time he sang it in a song (which as many of you know was pretty much every song), he would point at it. Great singer, who obviously had a great sense of humor too. This really is sad news.

“They say that life’s a carousel, spinning fast you’ve got to ride it well.”

  • \m/Eluveitie\m/

May 16th is Dio Day from now on. Don’t forget, don’t let your kids forget, don’t let your grandkids forget. He was only getting better at 67. Dio lost nothing with age. His voice, personality, humility…he’s a legend and a hero. Got all his records queued up and ready to rock in his honor.

    \m/

    • narcopolypse

      this x10000

  • You Don’t Know Me

I had a chance to meet Dio at the Heaven & Hell concert in Atlantic City, NJ last August (Dio’s last show ever) and he was one of the nicest people I ever met. It’s a terrible shame that such a great and talented musician has left this world. Ronnie, we miss you and love you. Rest in peace.

  • Random

What the fuck, why do people like Dio die while people like brett michaels are allowed to live.

    • Miguel_G

the Bret Michels thing is out of context right now. We’re talking about real legends. He shouls have been inducted with sabbath to the RnR Hall of Fame, he deserved it.

      • Isaac

Actually, I disagree. I think he deserves an induction for his solo stuff, but other than Heaven and Hell, he didn’t do too well with Sabbath, in my opinion.
That’s not to say H&H’s latest album (and his solo career) wasn’t spectacular, as well as Rainbow. Truly a huge loss.
        RIP.

        • Seanicus

Mob Rules is as good as any Ozzy-era Sabbath record.

        • Lenman

Sorry man, but the Heaven and Hell album was the best Sabbath album of all time. The second best was Dehunmanizer that never got it’s due. Im not an Ozzy hater but the best Sabbath was with Dio. I saw the Heaven and Hell tour in ’80 and it opened my mind to the world. I saw Dio 10 times live and there is or will never be anyone better. RIP the Voice of Metal.

      • stu

I love his stuff with Sabbath, but it was NO WHERE near as important/popular as the ozzy stuff

  • teababe27

    NOOOOO!!!

This sucks. I remember seeing Heaven and Hell last summer @ MSG. RIP Dio. great singer and person. \m/

    • Hellblasr

At least you got to see H&H live. I wanted too but when they came through where I live, I was unable to go. I consoled myself by saying I could see them again another time…

      RIP DIO \m/

Rest in peace, Ronnie James Dio, a hero to millions. The legacy he has left behind will last a lifetime, and I, like many, am going to miss him.

  • Carnage

As Tenacious D would sing “It’s Time to pass the torch” …..Ronnie’s life is a torch that will never burn out which means it will be passed on through out the ages….May you make beautiful & rocking music along side Dime,Randy & all the other metal Gods in the heavens above …..1,000 hails & 1,000 horns high \m/

  • Noel

This sucks. I thought he was going to make it for sure.

  • Etch

Horrible news. Ronnie James Dio was one of the guys I really wanted to see while I still had the chance. I’ll forever regret not being able to witness this fuckin heavy metal god. Dio seemed like a great dude, so I think his soul will forgive me. let us not wallow in sorrow, lets fuckin listen to DIo’s music as loud as we fuckin can. Bless Your Heart Ronne James Dio, you will be missed.

  • http://thatdevilmusic.blogspot.com Rob Liz

Devastating news. This year has not been kind to hard rock and heavy metal folks. This makes the Heaven and Hell show I attended 3 years ago that much more poignant. Ronnie was a gentlemen , a scholar, and one hell of a singer and I will for one truly miss him .

  • ZackP

I was never a huge Dio fan, but when I read this headline I got that pit in my stomach that everyone else did. Shows you how influential he really was, a very sad day indeed

        • Kevin

Axl or Vince should really ban that guy, using his IP address.

          That shit shoud’nt be tolerated.

          • PatriotOvMetal

Yea fuck you and your free speech….Censor everyone!!!!.

Fucking new world order junkie….go back to your facebook and rant on.

Anyone can say anything they want!! it is suppose to be a free world. Fact is many don’t care about Dio dying. Sorry that is how it is.

He was a great singer/songwriter but elevating him to some divine status is ridiculous. Besides people die every day even in the metal world. Where were you when Dime died and Pete Steele or Evil Chuck(who you prolly don’t even know) where were you when Quorthon aka Bathory died or when videk of decapitated died. All of these artist where just as good or better than Dio and are all dead now.

So knock off the ” He is a god” crap!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/William-Morley/618112437 William Morley

If you don’t give a fuck that Dio is dead then get the fuck off of a metal blog cause this music would not be the same if it weren’t for him. Go kill yourself.

the only time where Metalheads are allowed to cry if ever they need too, The Devil You Know was the best gift Dio have given us before his death, he will still live on with METAL forever!

  • Nostradumbass

One of the first albums I ever owned as a kid was Holy Diver. That was the early 80′s and I never stopped listening to the guy.

Definitely one of the people who brought me into the world of metal and I’m just really glad I had the chance to see him a few years ago on the Heaven & Hell tour. He was still amazing then which is one of the reason this is so hard to believe.

  • http://www.kingdomofnoise.blogspot.com MetalMatt

Whether you are “tr00″ or thought some of his music was cheese, the man is Class defined. And Vocally could smoke anyone half his age. In that- he deserves eternal respect. And Rainbow in the Dark is fucking classic.

What a shit day to start posting here again.

    Heaven and Hell indeed.

  • Chris

    RIP DIO
Metal has truly lost a god, he was the holy diver, the Man on the silver mountain and one of the greatest vocalists in metal history, He may be dead but his music will forever rock, throw up the horns to the memory of a metal god.

Motherfucker! This is so sad. I am so glad that I had to see Dio twice a year or so for the last few years. Music has lost one of its greatest voices. :(

    • Bassquatch

Hah, I was thinking the same thing earlier!

      RIP Dio

Lemmy’s still well and kicking, too. I’m truly surprised he isn’t dead yet, considering he basically hasn’t changed habits since the late 70s.

  • Tanner

He gave us the most endearing symbol in heavy metal culture, the Horns. Dio was the best. He was so humble yet so enthusiastic about this music.

    R.I.P. Ronnie James Dio.

  • The Metalosopher

An incredible loss; but on the other hand, at least he’s left an incomparable gift to the world of metal. And one that will never be forgotten.

    Rest in peace.

  • tim

Very few deaths in the music world actually get to me, but this one makes me genuinely sad. Dio had one of the best and most distinguished voices in music, not just metal. He seemed like such a kickass guy. I will say, though, that I find solice in knowing that Dio, Dimebag, Cliff Burton, and John Bonham are probably playing together somewhere better than here.

R.I.P. Dio. You are already missed more than you’d ever imagine.

    • Clancy

That would be one hell of a band. R.I.P Dio and all the best to your family. You will be greatly missed.

  • RayRay

I go to school where Dio is from (Cortland, NY) and there is a street called Dio Way named after him. Mindless fact I know but this guy was fucking loved everywhere. I was never a big fan or familiar with much of his music but his influence on metal is profound. The guy has millions of fans worldwide and will be missed. RIP.

It is so sad to see the greatest voice in metal being silenced. Dio was a god among men, the absolute best at what he did. I am glad we were blessed with a final album from Heaven and Hell before this tragedy.

  • Snafu

I was just about to go to bed when I noticed the headline about his death…and now I can’t sleep. I keep thinking about Dio, what kind of a man he was and what he did meant to me. Peter Steele’s death last month shook me up hard, but Dio’s…I feel like I’ve shattered. All there is to do now is to mourn his passing, hope that he’s rocking out wherever he is and honour his memory by remembering him and listening to his work.

Dio, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for everything. May you rest in peace.

  • Mike2

I’m not ashamed to say that I felt choked up when I heard about his death. He was not only a metal god, but a very intelligent man as well. His talent will be missed. Maybe other artist will look at Dio and try to examine their own work to honor his time on this earth by making music worth of Dio’s legacy.

  • Aces666high

I remember cruising w/my buddies in my 79′ camaro(how stereotypically metal!) blasting Holy Diver or the underappreciated Mob Rules while everyone around us were listening to poison or bel biv devoe. That garbage is gone now while Dio’s music is onto another generation.

Can people please for the love of sweet jesus and everything else stop with the fucking Dimebag references?!?! Please!!!! Ever since the rumors started about 24 hours ago, the Dimebag shit has kicked in. Stop mentioning his death in conjunction with this. It’s so fucking retarded. Knock it off.

  • Joe LaForm

My first metal record (yes, record kids) was Dio’s The Last In Line. I played I Speed At Night and the title track over and over again. That introduced me to a bigger variety of metal, not just Twisted Sister and Ratt. RIP sir, you have earned it. By the way, when you pray, you are now praying to Dio. He took over. Just waiting for Lemmy so there can be the vice chairman of rock n roll heaven.

He can rest easy now. While we all suffer the idea of not having him around, he’s in a better place.

I know what I’ll be jamming out to for a good while. RIP Dio, you’ll be sorely missed.

Such a joy that Ronnie was surrounded by loved ones at his passing! What better memorial to such a beloved man? The joy he gave millions for sharing his musical talents pales in comparison to the comfort of the validation of a life lived in love. My appreciation must lie with his family – specifically, his loving wife – for their understanding and their generosity in sharing this wonderful man and his unabiding love with the world.

Ronnie, may your spirit ascend to the purest of beauty and may your legacy guide the earth-bound to the same. Thank you, you amazing man. \m/

Shit, what a terrible loss :(. RIP Dio, father of the horns. \m/

  • OliFant

What a terrible loss. I was really blown away when I saw him at Hellfest in France last year.

And as weird as it may seem, I will always remember him as the singer of the most uplifting song in the world : “Love Is All”…

    R.I.P. !

  • GayHateMachine

First Peter Steele, now Dio? Who’s next? Why do all the talented people seem to die so soon…

  • Aled

So sad. If ‘Holy Diver’ ‘Rising’ and ‘Heaven and Hell’ arn’t proof Dio was great, We’ve lost the man who put fame to the devil horns.
May he rest in piece \m/

  • Lard

devastating loss not only to metal but to humanity

  • Fufkin

A musical hero – not just the albums he made with four incredible bands but the way he treated his fans with the utmost respect and sincerity.
A humble, highly intelligent man whose music will always mean a great deal to me.

I salute and give thanks to you, Ronnie.

  • niek

One of the best vocalists from the Heavy Metal genres. Been to the Heaven And Hell concert last year in Dessel and that was awesome, looked forward to their tour again this year but unfortunatly.

My condolences to his family and relatives.

  • phil

The Man on the Silver Mountain went to The Rainbow in the Dark. RIP Dio

  • Discipleofthewatch

So sorry to hear about this. RIP, Ronnie James Dio. I’m glad I got to see him on the Metal Masters tour. He is truly a legend, and my heart goes out to his family.

  • http://www.myspace.com/palehorseofhell lord assenfroth

he now rides in that metal valhalla. rest in peace dio!

  • Metal Fuckin’ Dave

This is the greatest loss metal has ever known. I fucking cried at work over this! First my dad, and now my favorite metal vocalist. FUCK CANCER IN THE ASS!
Thank God I had the pleasure of seeing Dio perform live so many times. Each time now seems like a real privilege. Nobody will ever replace the talent that we lost.

  • sYgnal

What can I say that hasn’t been said here, except for a quote from one of my all-time favorite DIO songs:

“We’ll know for the first time if we’re evil or divine we’re the last in line!”

    Ronnie James Dio ~Rest In Peace~ \m/ \m/

  • Jeff

A truly sad day in the Metal world. The loss of a World Class Singer.
My first tape of his was The Last In Line and since then I gptten most everything from his Elf days to Heaven and Hell.
I wish I saw him live but I missed out big time.
    RIP Ronnie
    Long Live RJD

  • Sam

R.I.P. Dio… you’re music will continue to inspire generations! \m/

  • Chase

Lonley is the word, got to be the saddest song i have ever heard.
Rest in Peace man, you brought Heavy Metal to the forefront and your legacy will live forever. No doubt in my mind you were the singer of metal. Glad to say i saw you second row with megadeth and my late friend crunched your hand. Hope you see him up there man.

  • tiagón

still I’m sad. RIP the greatest voice of all times.

  • bearbomb

Making my coworkers listen to Dio ALL DAY TODAY, and if they don’t like it they can go fuck themselves.

RIP Dio. Horns up! \m/ \m/

  • shit sandwich

Its always the good ones who have to die.

    R.I.P Dio

Oh yeah, how the fuck does Ozzy outlive Dio?

  • Sammy

How many of us who think we can sing started by trying to duplicate (poorly) Dio’s prolific voice? Maybe SRV needed a metal vocalist to jam with. RIP Dio, RIP.

  • Kuranes

Oh my god… I was listening to Black Sabbath’s “Heaven and Hell” album in my car all day yesterday and I didn’t even know about this. I love his work with Rainbow, Sabbath and his solo band. He is a legend, and it’s a damn shame that he was never acknowledged by the Rock Hall of Fame. RIP.

    • Ares

Shit, man. I was listening to Rainbow’s “RISING” right when my dad came in to tell me about his death. I missed my chance to see him live, so just like Pete Steele last month, it’s just too bad to be true.

  • cougar party

Fucking sucks. Dio was one of the best. ‘Holy Diver’ is one of my favorite albums. RIP \m/

LONG LIVE RONNIE JAMES DIO!!!!! HE”S THE KING OF ROCK n ROOOOLLLLL!!!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jay-See/726690352 Jay See

    Very unfortunate, indeed.
He always seemed like such a friendly, down-to-earth guy (ex. check out his interviews in Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey…he even invited the director to come hang out at his pad for another interview so he could chat with him more).

    R.I.P. Ronnie James Dio
    Thanks for all the rock

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Logan-Holloway/1100588308 Logan Holloway

It really sucks to see someone so down to earth, friendly and talented die, at least he could still sing and entertain pretty much until the end/ Ozzy will not be able to say the same. Horns up for the one and only Dio \m/

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Harrington-Neil-Sauer/677600672 Harrington Neil Sauer

Ozzy should’ve died, Dio was still making great music and was still rocking harder than anyone half his age. RIP DIO! \m/

I’m taking this harder than I though I would. Heaven and Hell was an album I would always listen to when I felt like shit and needed a lift.

    RIP Dio

With Ronnies passing it makes me think about todays metal scene and how there are no heroes anymore .Either that or im getting old. I remember being a kid when Last in Line came out and i really felt connected to the music and the image. Such a long time ago. I had the joy to meet Ronnie back in the 90′s and even though his security tried to rush me away Ronnie told him to wait and shook my hand. It was like gripping the hand of a God .
Last night I plugged my guitar in and just started playing every Dio song i could think of. Some i hadnt played in 20 years and i felt like my hands were being guided by something. I hadnt realized just how many songs i had learned over the years by him. More than any other artist i admired growing up. The world is darkness now as i wonder what heroes i have left in this world. I am grateful that nobody has disrespected such a giant. We should all live our lives held in such high regard.

There’s perfect harmony in the rising and the falling of the sea
And as we sail along I never fail to be astounded by the things we’ll do for promises and a song
We are the innocent we are the damned
We were caught in the middle of the madness hunted by the lion and the lamb
We bring you fantasy we bring you pain
It’s your one great chance for a miracle or we will disappear never to be seen again
And all the fools sailed away
    RIP Metal Father \m/

    • argpirate

      Perfect eulogy.

  • Dv

RIP Dio. Your legacy lives on forever.

  • Igottawocket

I second all the condolences here, man, what a loss to metal and rock. Dio was truly a class act, talented performer, and all around amazing guy. Had the privilege to see Heaven and Hell live when they went out with Megadeth, fucking awesome live. Man dis Dio have a voice. And I’m so pissed I missed them on the Judas Priest tour, got there and they were just getting off stage. Serious gayness.
You will live on forever in man. Your music will assure that. Horns. You will be missed.

    RIP Dio

  • Mitch

One of the best vocalists ever, and a man who truly influenced the industry.
    R.I.P. Ronnie James Dio

  • Ares

Dio is dead and Fred Durst and Marilyn Manson get to live?! Fucking CHARLES Manson is still alive, but the grim reaper had to snatch up Dio.

What is an industrial sized wrench shoved up my ass? It’s better than Dio dying. In the words of Judas Priest-

“Why do you have to die to be a hero/ it’s a shame a legend begins at its end/ Why do you have to die to be a hero/ when there’s still so many things to say unsaid.”

(From the song “Hero’s End” from Stained Class.)

I never were the biggest Dio fan but even I recognize the size of the metal-giant that just passed away. He is too big for words.
I always thought he would have to be dramatically slaughtered by a huge dragon or a dark wizard; or at least some fanatic dressed as one. Cancer is just so… undashing to a man who’ve sung songs about pretty much all that is awesome.
His legacy will live on forever though.
    Rest in motherfucking peace Dio.

  • Death to bro metal

Dio embodied Heavy Metal. The man had so much spirit. His songs had so much passion. Many people refer to him as the “God-Father of Power Metal” but his influenced is seen in so many different styles of metal.

An undeniable talent, an undeniable icon.

  • Old Skool Metal

THis is my second post on this thread, I’m really a lot more bummed out that I thught I’d be. THis really sux. We all die but it just sux when your childhood heros go and it reminds you of time passing with no prejudice. We will all be gone in the end but just knowing that he suffered from cancer makes it hurt that much more. Dio didn’t deserve to suffer, he brought so much joy to tons of metal heads. I was lucky enought to see him live when I was 15 years old. I only wish that a lot of younger metal heads would’ve had to chance to see this brilliant man perform. He was diminutive in stature, but a giant on the stage. Dio rules forever!!!

    Horns Up DIO!!! \m/!

I had a chance to see RJD in London with B..Sabbath (1981) and at Donington in 1983, I can only say that he was the VOICE of heavy metal. I have been deeply saddened at the news of his death. My condolences to the family.
