PAUL GRAY, SLIPKNOT BASSIST, DEAD AT 38

Monday, May 24th, 2010 at 5:06pm by

paul greyExaminer.com is reporting that Slipknot bassist Paul Gray, aka #2, was found dead by a hotel worker in Des Moines, IA this morning. He was 38.

According to Examiner.com, “Paul had a darker side to his life, dealing with drugs and alcohol abuse, and then getting married and expecting a child with his wife, Brenna, later this year.” No cause of death has been determined as of yet.

R.I.P. Paul. Our thoughts are with his friends and family.

Please feel free to share your thoughts on and personal experiences with Paul in the comments section below.

R.I.P. Paul. You’re amont the MANY metalheads rocking the afterlife.

  • Seanicus

This came out of nowhere. RIP buddy.

  • Cokane

    That really sucks!RIP man!

R.I.P. Paul. I’ve seen Slipknot several times and always have a blast. I’ve grown out of their style of music recently, but still, this is sad news to hear, especially with him expecting a child later this year. Expect a toxicology report by the end of the week. I read they are doing the autopsy tomorrow.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kasper-Maigaard/1027001938 Kasper Maigaard

FUCK! Now Slipknot are gonna break up. And I like Slipknot. Why does all that is awesome die these years?

Rest in peace Paul. You will be missed.

    • stu1

They’re barely even a band anymore, anyway. And aside from that, don’t think they won’t toss someone from some other band up in there in a mask and jumpsuit if they get an offer they like.

      • metaguy

your kinda right. 2 years touring, 1 album, 4 year break = riding all those royalties. easily replaced

        • Louis

No offence but you couldn’t be more wrong, they shifted members around during mate feed kill repeat, but since their first released album they’ve had the same 9 members for the whole 10 years, no way they’ll replace him, they’ll just split now.

          RIP Paul

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Timothy-Scott/1196691346 Timothy Scott

Slipknot will not stop because Gray is gone, true is one of the founding members along with Clown and Joey but that will not stop the Knot. Piggy would not want it that way. He was and is a great man that I met after a show in Miami when their first album came out. I was one of maybe 30 people in there and they still put on one of the best shows I have ever seen. On Mayhem a few years ago I saw him running around the stage grounds talking to people and know one knew who he was. I went up and just said “hi” I know who you are but your secerts safe with me and he just laughed and said ‘thanks dude’. Started to share stories about bands and I talked about the show in Miami, Mr.Gray had a memory like I have never seen and he remembered the show, the venue and that there was no one there and it cost more for them to get 9 people there and they lost over 2k just to come to Florida. He will be missed and now my Slipknot Tattoo has a new piece coming: Pigs Mask is going under the ’9agram’. RIP You will be missed but not forgotten.

          • sewageking

Yeah… I’ve read that Paul Gray was one of their best creative minds. Honestly, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if they broke up after this. It’s a real tragedy. Slipknot was a great band.

          • http://www.myspace.com/somethinglikesweet CJ

Yeah, there’s no replacing him. They’re done.

          • http://www.myspace.com/somethinglikesweet CJ

Unless, that is, they shift the members around and make someone else in the band play bass and truck on with 8 people. That’s possible. As far as bringing in a new guy…. I wouldn’t count on it.

          • stu1

Trust me, if they get a lucrative offer, they’ll truck on with someone else playing bass. I have little to no doubt about it.

  • http://heavystreet.com Sat

Man….what is up with this year. Pete Steele, RJD, and now Paul Grey. This sucks. Seen Paul many a time with Slipknot in Vancouver in the early days, and just recently this past October. R.I.P. Paul.

    • http://www.heavyblogisheavy.com/ Alkahest

      Don’t forget The Rev, man.

This was a fucking terrible year for metal musicians. RIP Paul. =[

      • http://heavystreet.com Sat

Yeah, James “Rev” Sullivan as well. These amazing musicians have passed on way to early.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Timothy-Scott/1196691346 Timothy Scott

Rev passed on Dec.29 2009, not to take anything away from him but that was last year and sorry, but the Rev and Ax7 have not had the impact on the Metal scene that Slipknot had. Slipknot=Orginal Ax7=Metalcore tasteless Crap. Sorry, but it had to be said. It was still said to lose another Metal Musician in these last few years.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Timothy-Scott/1196691346 Timothy Scott

            Sorry, DEC 28TH.

          • SourDeez

Waking The Fallen is a thousand times better than anything Slipknot is even capable of producing.

          • Trenton

Actually, Waking The Fallen has to be the shittiest CD I’ve ever listened to. It sounds like a terribad local band. Even if it might have set the generic standard, it still sucks. With that being said, Slipknot is indeed better. Rest in peace, Paul.

i bought the self titled slipknot album when it came out. i think i was 15. i must have listened to it every day for six months. slipknot got me into the more extreme metal that i listen to these days.

    r.i.p

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jay-See/726690352 Jay See

In the exact same boat – liked them back when I was around 15 at the time of their debut album, and it was one of the albums that paved the way for my love of extreme metal.

      RIP

      • Dan

I think that’s probably how it happened for most of us.

Slipknot changed everything for me personally, not to sound cliche or anything but they really did change my life for the better (or worse if you happened to be my mum downstairs while I had Iowa blasting.)

I finally had the chance to see the band in Birmingham in December 08 with Machine Head. Though their set list wasn’t perfect, now I’m glad I had that opportunity because I doubt they’ll continue now, they were too close.

Damn this sucks, most of all for the members of Slipknot and Paul’s wife. My thoughts are with them.

        R.I.P. Paul

    • djabthrash

      Same here.

Been a huge fanboy back in the days. Still like what they’ve done ever since.

He seemed to be a cool guy.

      RIP

    • KC

I remember buying the self titled as well. I was a freshman in high school and I swore that these guys were the heaviest band on the face of the earth. Then I of course found out about the more extreme metal after that, but for that brief period of time Slipknot were the be all end all of extreme metal for me.

      • Ben

        Ditto for me.

I bought the self titled album when I was 14. It was definitely a big step up for me as far as heaviness goes (I was a big Korn fan back then). I think I honestly didn’t listen to anything else for at least 3 months. Literally. It stayed in my discman (Ha! Discman!) the entire time.

If it weren’t for these dudes in their masks I can say with a certainty that I wouldn’t be listening to the bands I do today. For that I owe them so, so much. They’ve changed my life.

        Thanks and RIP Paul.

Bit of a double chin in the picture

    • bearbomb

I knew I wouldn’t be able to send my post below off in time.

  • bearbomb

Wow. I don’t know what’s more surprising, his death or the lack of smart ass, anti-Slipknot comments… so far. Say what you will about this band but this really sucks. Not a huge fan anymore but they were pretty much THE band for about 3 or 4 years of my life. I’ll never forget the tour they did with Rammstein and System.

    R.I.P. Paul.

    • Alex_P

Hopefully, the rest of us will show some class. I don’t like Slipknot, but this still does suck. It’s not like Slipknot-haters “win” anything from this, so I hope other people will shy away from trolling.

      Man, I really hope this isn’t a once-a-week thing. I can’t keep up.

      • PD

Agreed. I might not enjoy Slipknot’s music, but I do enjoy life (like everyone should). No reason to hate on someone who just lost his life, or the fans of his work.

        • http://www.examiner.com/x-44499-San-Antonio-Heavy-Metal-Examiner San Antonio Heavy Metal Examiner

Same, I was never a Slipknot fan (save for one or two songs when I was 16), but that really sucks for his family and friends. I believe he had an Immolation tattoo if I can recall an article in Metal Hammer (or a similar magazine, my memory is fuzzy), and anyone who likes Immolation is cool with me. R.I.P.

          • Izzay E

He had an Immolation tattoo? I would’ve never guessed that. That’s badass. R.I.P. Paul.

    • deathcore sucks

well heres your anti slipknot comment SLIPKNOT SUCKS BALLS! pauls death is only a sign that Slipknot well break up evently this year and that their regin as the No.1 Hot Topic mainstrem metal band is over

      • Sickjoke

First off, if your going to bash one of the greatest metal bands of all time. Please learn how to fucking spell you spineless dickhead. RIP Paul.

        • piranha

You beat his spelling by miles, but uh… you did spell “you’re” wrong. ;)

        • deathcore sucks

hay i might not be a good spell but at least i know good metal when i see it and you saying the slipknot is one of the greatest metal bands of all time is just silly if slipknot is your idea of metal then you must not understand what metal is about or listen to any good metal you are probley some fat hot topic kid who when he gets into collage will stop listening to metal and become a bussines man

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/James-Butler/100000300276967 James Butler

yah, that was probably one of the coolest shows i went to back in the day… when they were all just starting to get “big”… good times…

  • TXHellbilly

    R.I.P. Paul.

  • metaguy

holy shit this was a suprise. RIP and all but:
FIRST PERSON TO SAY HE WAS AN AMAZING BASSIST GETS A KICK IN THE NECK

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Daniel-Winnett/504952291 Daniel Winnett

He wasn’t amazing, at least not in a world where we’ve got Alex Webster, Brandon Griffin and Sean Beasley but there is no denying he was a solid player of his instrument.

      Good but not great.

      • metaguy

i know, just after the A7x guy died, everyone said he was amazing. Deathdoes not equal talent

    • Steve O

Not exactly godly, but he’s good enough to play lots of vintage thrash/death metal (and to be fair, he doesn’t play half-speed in Slipknot songs, he does it exactly as fast as Mick & Jim). And his basslines on MateFeedKillRepeat were actually pretty interesting for the most part. But I agree, their fans will probably react this way…

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Timothy-Scott/1196691346 Timothy Scott

You must not play bass if you make a comment like that. He is a great player, get some of there books and see if you can stay in the ‘pocket’ when you have a 9 person band. He knew what and when to play. He was a talent and I guess you didnt know that wrote about 45% of there music. So kic…I double dog dare ya lol

      • http://heavybrutal.com/ familyghost

you must not know what you’re talking about, dicksnot fangirl, paul was nothing special. and yes I actually do play, ya fucking poser

  • Death to bro metal

    RIP

My heart goes out to his family and those close to him

  • Pat

Damn, first The Rev, then Pete Steele, Dio, and now Paul Gray :/

    • twistedfreak

Fucking harsh aye, bad yea for Metal and it’s only May.

  • SourDeez

What’s with all the metal deaths recently?

  • Rachel

I’ve had a special spot for Slipknot. They were my first group that transitioned me from hard rock to metal. It’s a shame, because the ‘Knot prided themselves in being together for 10 and having no lineup changes in the 9 members.

    RIP Paul Gray

  • rain

slipknot will never be the same without paul…..R.I.P

  • Dr. Steve Brule

Well, this sucks. His stuff on Mate. Feed. Kill. repeat was great. However, after that it seemed like he forgot how to play bass. Never-the-less he was a cool dude and this totally blows.

  • Mr. Parker

    He was an amazing bassist…

    RIP #2

ok this is nuts. first pete steele, then dio, then paul? bloody hell. RIP all you hard-rocking muthers.

slipknot have always been so heavy on the ‘only us 9′ rhetoric that this could be their deathknell. lets hope not.

I was at download too, they were amazing. they made the weekend.

  • msv81

So fucking sad. Slipknot will always be one of my favorite bands. Don’t care what any haters say. I wish the best for Paul’s family during this traumatic time.

Gonna blast their discography for the rest of the day in honor of him. Dead at 38 is truly a tragedy. Too many deaths in the world of metal lately.

    • Sickjoke

Got their music cranking as well. Once a Maggot, always a Maggot.

    Unbelievable..

I wonder what’s going to happen with the band? I’ve never been a particularly huge fan of Slipknot.. but I can’t see them playing with a different bassist after this..

  • SP420

    Don’t care. They sucked anyways.

Hey, someone had to do it first =/

    • msv81

And I bet so many more people are going to be upset at your death, SP420. You have changed so many lives in this world. You have been an inspiration to millions of young and old metalheads alike, you’ve been part of one of the biggest metal acts in recent history, have a #1 album under your belt, and have sold millions of records worldwide.

Oh, wait. No, you didn’t do any of these things. Instead you mindlessly and anonymously spam. I don’t give a shit whether you like the band or not, this is a person we’re talking about. He left behind a wife and unborn child. Have some fucking respect you piece of shit. Fuck you very much.

    • The Metalosopher

I second msv81. I’m not a fan of Slipknot myself, but have a little respect. This isn’t just an element of a band you don’t like, it’s a person who had a life and a family. There’s a standard of conduct called common decency and you just fell way short of it.

      • SP420

Think of it this way, kids. I don’t think his family will be reading what some guy said on a metal blog about Gray’s death; the only ones you’re needlessly getting angered with is yourselves.

        • Crypto

Dude, I’m not the biggest slipknot fan myself.

But you don’t have to be a goddamn douche about it. Go troll a worthy topic.

        • bearbomb

No, think of it this way. If an asshole trolls around on some blog and no one is around to read it, is it still an asshole? Yes, yes it is.

          • metaguy

            +1000 i LOLD

      • SomeKid

I third msv81, show some class. It’s not like you win some prize for him dying, shut the hell up.

You know Karma is a bitch right?

  • Fufkin

Damn shame. Wasn’t he one of the primary writers in the band too?
This is turning out to be a terrible time for metal.

  • agee

I thought this was a metal website, not a website for some angsty music for thirteen year olds. I’m glad he’s dead, nothing of value was lost.

    • msv81

Remember what you said here today when a loved one of yours passes on you fucking waste of life. And when you’re completely devastated, in tears from mourning your loss, just remember: somebody out there is GLAD THEY’RE DEAD.

      You make me sick.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Luis-Rodriguez/601735615 Luis Rodriguez

        butthurt?
that wanker was on serious addiction problems and waiting for a child with his pregnant wife, what an awesome human being he must have been

        in music related rant
he couldn’t play for shit, just like the rest of the band
hope they split like right now

        • Steve O

He could play for shit, as it so happens. So can the two guitarists and the main drummer.

        • SonOF

“that wanker was on serious addiction problems and waiting for a child with his pregnant wife, what an awesome human being he must have been.”

Wow, you must have no life experience. The fact that he was an addict doesn’t make him a bad human being by any respect. Actually, EVERY SINGLE anecdote I have heard about the guy runs contradictory to your worthless, unfounded opinion.

If you hate the guy’s music, fine, but don’t make assumptions about the character of a man you never met.

          • Superhans

            + motherfuckin’ 1

    • deathcore sucks

man i totally argree now lets hope corey talyor is next to have a painful death this is what slipknot gets for bringing fat hot topic kids into metal

      • msv81

You’ve got serious, deep seeded emotional issues for which you should seek out professional help immediately.

Wishing a painful death upon anybody, let alone a person who you’ve never met and don’t know in the slightest way possible, solely based on the fact that you dislike their musical endeavor is pretty much in line with the KKK or the fucking Nazi’s. Just think about it for a minute…

Your elitism and preconceived notions of what metal should and shouldn’t be (and who should or shouldn’t be a member of the metal community – i.e. “fat hot topic kids”) has led you to actively wish harm and death upon a fellow human being; a person with a family, wife, a kid, loved ones, friends, relatives – A PERSON JUST LIKE YOU, YOUR FRIENDS, YOUR LOVED ONES. You’re basically saying, “Slipknot’s existence caused an entire generation of kids to get into my precious metal scene, they don’t belong, DEATH TO THEM ALL!” How is that any different than asserting all black or Jewish people are sub-human and deserve to die painful deaths?

If anything, you should be thanking bands like Slipknot for making extreme/heavy music that is simultaneously accessible to a larger audience. God forbid we should have bands who bring in more fans who give their hard earned money to the genre as a whole. Or, I guess you’re “that guy” who thinks metal should be confined to 150 people basement bars where bands who nobody has ever heard of play shit that is barely listenable or coherent. Slipknot and bands like them are directly responsible for converting more people into metalheads. God forbid! No, it’d be MUCH better to have every Slipknot fan listening to rap or country or pop music instead. Bands like Slipknot have served as a gateway for countless people to get into more extreme stuff like death metal, thrash, whatever. For that and more, I commend them. They have done nothing but help our community, a fact that you’re completely blind to due to your utter ignorance.

So go on, continue feeling self-righteous about listening to some obscure bullshit that 30 other people on the face of the planet have heard of just so you somehow feel tr00 and br00tal. Just know that one day you’ll suffer a great loss of a loved one and think about how it would feel for a complete stranger to say, “That’s great, I’m glad he/she is dead, now I hope your mother dies, too, her cooking SUCKED.” Fucking scumbag.

nice essay asshole its the fucking internet what do suspect ofcourse i am going to try to say something to piss off and make you write a huge essay if you just ignored me i would not care to comment anymore

          • msv81

Since when is something that’s four paragraphs a “huge essay”? Guess your small, infantile brain must have really struggled to get through the giant wall of text, my god there had to have been over 100 whole words there!

You also may want to look into something called punctuation and grammar, as everything you’ve written thus far is sorely lacking both.

Glad you also recognize that hiding behind a computer screen gives you the right to act like a complete scumbag, fuckhead. Just remember what you said the next time someone close to you dies. Maybe you’ll understand how much of a careless piece of shit you were to say the things you did.

Better stop here, otherwise I’ll end up writing another “huge essay”, god forbid you’d have to actually USE your brain for something other than shit talking.

          • deathcore sucks

msv81 i can not belive you get all pissed off over comments on the internet you should have taken my advice and just ignore me but you are to stupid to do that you do not understand that by commenting back at me helps give 10min of time to waste I am just having to much fun with all you so called maggots. I must also ask what is it like to watch one of your favorite bands fall apart cause i never felt that felling cause all the bands i listen to are ture to the music and not hot topic trend shit and do not say that slipknot legacy will live on because in at least 5 years no one will care about them cause all of their old fans will all be so called big grown up bussines men

          • msv81

I’ll indulge you some more here since I’ve got some time on my hands. First of all, funny you would call anyone stupid considering your spelling, punctuation, and grammer are on about a fifth grade level. Did you spend too much time listening to all those great, tr00 bands to pay attention in English class? If four paragraphs of text are an “essay” to you, I can’t begin to imagine how long it would take you to finish a whole book.

And if you “can’t believe” someone would get pissed off at a comment that says, “I hope (this person) dies”, then you’re even more of a fucking moron than I think now. Like I said twice now, you won’t be singing the same tune when one day you mom or dad dies. Who the fuck cares if you like Slipknot or not? It’s a human being we’re talking about. I think brokencyde is the worst thing to ever happen to music but I certainly don’t wish harm upon any of the members and it would be a sad day if any one of them died a premature death. That’s something called basic human decency, a trait which you clearly lack.

Another thing: when did I ever refer to myself as a “maggot”? I didn’t. Being a fan of Slipknot does not make me a self-proclaimed maggot. I admit how stupid it is for the band to have come up with that gimmick, but big freakin’ deal, it doesn’t make their music any less awesome to me.

Also, who said the band has fallen apart? One guy died, I’m sure they’ll go on without him. If they don’t, that sucks but it’s a band, they aren’t essential to my existence. I feel horrible for Paul’s family and friends and am not overly concerned as to the future of Slipknot. They probably had one more album in them at most anyway, if they decide to call it quits, so be it. The guys will continue to make music with other bands.

Oh, and all the bands you listen to are “ture” to the music? Not really sure what that means but I can only assume you meant to say “true”. Who the hell are you to say Slipknot’s output isn’t a genuine expression of who they are? Trend hopping bullshit? How about Slipknot MADE the trends who countless bands have followed. Have you checked blabbermouth recently to see all of the comments from major bands who consider Slipknot a game changer? And the comments just keep coming in, so clearly some very talented people think highly of Slipknot. That shouldn’t be any bearing on whether you like them or not, but it goes to show you your opinion is just that, a subjective interpretation based on your own preference. I couldn’t care less what you think of Slipknot, what I care about is your complete lack of respect of another human being.

Love how you say none of the bands you listen to have fallen apart because they’re “ture to their music” (sic), as if Slipknot’s bassist died because they are trend hopping hot topic shit. Reading your words has made me dumber, thanks for that. I’m so happy for you, you’re, like, the coolest person on earth because all the bands you listen to are tr00. I bet you can’t find ANY of their shirts at places like hot topic. And I also bet they have sold all of 4,000 records worldwide because they’re just THAT awesome.

Last point I’ll make: just because a band is accessible to a larger audience doesn’t make them trend hoppers, nor does it make their music any less genuine an art form. Like I said, talk all the shit you want on whatever band you want, I couldn’t care less since your opinion means about as much as the 2 pound shit I just finished taking. Fact is, Slipknot has sold millions of records and they will be remembered as a huge act in metal history, like it or not.

kid you do not get it you commenting back at me is giving something to do when i am bored because of you i have something to look foward to when i get done school tomarrow. oh and if you whant to insult my spelling and punctuation come to my engilsh class I’d be more than happy to but this is a metal website not an engilsh class we talk about metal and music as a whole the only reason you insult my use of the english languge is the cover up the fact that you know nothing about metal and what it stands for but i will help with that here is a link to a really good black metal band carpathian forest you probley will not like cause you can not find their t shrits at hot topic http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47hzwo5-jZc

          • msv81

You call me a “kid” yet you talk about what you’re going to do when you get home from school tomorrow? LOL!!!!!!

I point out your grammatical errors because any self-respecting human being should know how to use their language CORRECTLY. Of course, it’s painfully evident you aren’t a self-respecting individual, you’re some jackass high school or college kid who thinks the world revolves around him.

And as for your judgment of my knowledge of metal, all good. Do you think I really care of your worthless opinion? I’ve been listening to metal since 1988; how old were you then? Were you even BORN? LOL. By the way, funny how you talk shit on a band like Slipknot when the real clowns are black metal morons who think they’re so tr00 by dressing up in corpse paint, spikes, and leather. Not much of a difference between that and putting on jump suits and masks if you ask me.

You’re right, though, I don’t like black metal, or, at least “proper” black metal (blackened thrash is great, so are certain bands influenced by BM, but overall the genre is shit). Try listening to some Anaal Nathrakh, The Postman Syndrome, Leng Tch’e, or Abacinate.

          • deathcore sucks

at least corpse paint has a meaning to it unlike wearing masks that you can jerk off. Corpse paint has to deal with the plague when everyones faces were white and pale. I find it interesting that some one who has listened to metal since 1988 would listen to slipknot when there’s such great bands like death, slayer, kreator or even bathory. i would think some one who had the chance to live in a time when many great metal sub genres where devloping would understand why slipknot are a bunch posers and i would suspect some one who is an adult to not get trolled so easily by a 15 year old kid with a minor case of autism

          • msv81

…I’ll continue because now this is just too much fun. You say I have no idea “what metal stands for”? Really? Please educate me on what exactly it is that metal stands for. Seeing as how there are countless sub genres, there’s no way you can point to a singular defining characteristic that encompasses what metal is about.

Sure, there are common themes; some bands are heavily influenced by political and social commentary while others delve into moralistic and religious (or anti-religious) ideals. Some bands are downright silly and just in it for fun (see: hair metal, comedy metal, glam metal), some sing to the tune of self-assertion, personal exploration, and standing up for oneself (see: hardcore).

Then you’ve got bands who use serial killers, slasher flicks, and medical terminology to come up with gruesome lyrics about death, murder, rape, violation, dissection, blood, gore, etc. (see: goregrind, death metal). Also can’t forget about black metal and it’s innate connection to Satanism; Pagan/Folk metal draws upon historical mythology of various Eastern European and Scandanavian countries, as does Viking Metal. Power metal is driven by fantasy and science fiction; Doom/Sludge metal is often formulated by topics meant to elicit fear and an impending sense of, you guessed it, doom.

Then you’ve got your stoner metal bands who have a strong connection, lyrically speaking, to the psychedelic bands of the 60s and 70s. Anarchy is a pretty common theme in metal as well, especially with bands who are more punk influenced.

The list goes on and on. Point being, good luck trying to find a unifying theme throughout ALL metal. But I guess since you’re such a super intelligent metalhead, you must already know these things. Oh wait, no, no you had no idea because you’re clearly some 15 to 18 year old fucktard who likes to run his mouth about things which he knows not. Fucktastic fuckstick!

          • msv81

“at least corpse paint has a meaning to it….it has to do with the plague”

uh, no, actually it does not have anything to do with the plague. Corpse paint is merely a way for bands to look “more evil” or “more threatening” or, obviously, meant to make the performer(s) look dead. It’s a theatrical device, a costume, just like wearing a mask. KISS and Alice Cooper both utilized corpse paint back in the 70s, though there’s no real connection between them and the development of black metal. Really, though, the vast majority of bands who use CP do it for show, just like Slipknot uses their masks for show as part of the performance.

Theatrics/costumes aside, corpse paint is representative of a bit more for some bands. Eyal commented on this last year when he sad, “Do you guys understand what corpse paint represents? It’s part of a political and nationalistic agenda that we have no say or part in. I know that there’s a million different styles of black metal, but what I’m referring to is the genre that was spawned as rebellion against the Christian invaders. See, back a long time ago in Scandinavia, the Christians invaded and crushed the native people’s Pagan cultures with maximum brutality. The corpse paint is a symbolic war paint to accompany music which is essentially nationalistic rebellion music aimed at pushing out the Christian invaders.”

And as for your assertion that you’re surprised I listen to Slipknot, having listened to metal for so long, big deal. My taste in metal is not limited to one or two sub genres. I enjoy a vast array of metal; yes, it is possible to love Slipknot while also loving Slayer, Cannibal Corpse, Testament, Sepultura, Chimaira, Gojira, Brujeria, Entombed, and a million other bands.

          • deathcore sucks

    • SonOF

Addiction is a crazy thing. NOTHING will stop you from using once you are in the grips deep enough – kids, wife, husband, job, money, self-respect…it will all come second (even if you want to quit very badly). That doesn’t mean he was a bad person or stupid at all, it just means that he was an addict that got beat. His only fault was not getting help sooner (of not following up on the help, as I have no idea if he got help or not).

    • Fred Durst

Im with frosty, i cant say Im glad hes dead like these other guys, however, everyone has a choice in life. Wah, Im a rockstar with all this money and lifes so hard, Wah I need drugs to escape, Wah I cant handle my shit and now Im dead.

Poor gimmick control, this guy is no different than Heath Ledger or Brittany Murphy or Chris Farley or any of the countless other shitheads who wallowed in their “misfortunes” and self pity; and eventually their own shit and puke.

Slipknots first album was decent but they pretty much turned into the KIss of heavy music.

  • Igottawocket

I don’t like Slipknot, but I do see their place in the metal world, and its sad when anyone dies (well, almost). RIP man.
So I’m pretty sure there’s a mass conspiracy against metal right now. There’s a secret society made of hipsters (and I’m using that word to mean real hipsters, not the buzzword its become equaling douche), rap fans, teen boppers, mainline journalists, and juggalos thats systematically killing off people in metal bands. Think about it. Makes total sense.

    • Perpetual Black Screen Name

No kidding. It’s insane the rate that all these musicians are dying at. I’m seriously asking myself, who’s next?

    • Lady Death

I’m convinced that every time Bret Michaels survives something random, someone improtant to metal has to die. Appendicitus? Peter Steele. Bleeding brain? Dio. Stroke? Paul.

Not wishing anyone dead of course. Hell, after all this I’ll probably even feel a bit of remorse whenever Fred Durst dies. But seriously, it’s like some kind of Final Destination thing.

People you need to grow up! This is a sad lose to the music industry. He knew how to play, weather he was THE best or worst. It does not matter. He was a human being like you and me. We should all feel something! Unless you are heartless ass holes. Which I am figuring most of you are since i have read a hand full of the comments and they say “Well I hope this person is next” and also “why are the members of ICP alive?” As a fan to most music, as well as ICP. I find this rather sad that people would wish death on another human being just because you personally dont like the music. Grow the fuck up! Let the fans have their chance to grieve in peace with out you ass fuckers up our ass telling us how he sucked and I hope Another member dies, or a different groups members die. Its fucking rude! get a life

This is very sad news, I dont listen to Slipknot anymore but I used to be very obsessed. I even had the honor of meeting Paul when I was 16, and got his autograph. He was a really nice guy and I had a great conversation with him about a show that i saw them at.

RIP Paul, I have not had the privilege of seeing Slipknot live (and it doesn’t look I’ll be able to), but you were a part of the band that first got me into metal, and for that, I am grateful.

  • Ares

I think slipknot is ridiculous now, but when I was 11 and 12, they were the shit. They were just to convincingly angry that I had to take notice. Even though I don’t like them anymore, Slipknot will always kinda be etched into my metal psyche from when I was a tortured middle-school loser. And don’t forget that Grey was the one who wrote quite a bit of Slipknot’s songs. R.I.P.

  • You Don’t Know Me

I’m not a big fan of Slipknot now but I started listening to them in middle school. I remember sitting on the bus with a friend of mine and he was like, “You have to hear this band!” I put on the headphones and he played me “Wait and Bleed”. I was hooked at that point. My fandom of Slipknot slowly faded as I went through high school and college, but I can’t forget the impact the band made on me when I was younger. And without them, I wouldn’t have moved on to heavier, more extreme styles of metal.

It’s a shame. 38? Damn, that’s so young. He was had demons he was battling, like that quote from the Examiner states, I hope he’s finally found peace.

    R.I.P. Paul Gray

  • Gecko

For what it’s worth, yes, Slipknot is not the band they were when they started, but no one can really deny their influence or their prominence on the metal scene. I can definitely say they were one of the main bands that transitioned me from grunge and punk into metal, and for that I thank them. Paul wasn’t the best bassist in the world, but he wrote some solid lines, and did what the band needed him to do. That being said…RIP dude.

  • Marc Hunt

makes me glad i saw a slipknot concert last year, too bad i didn’t have glasses, which i needed…i could have seen so much more, making the experience every bit better

  • tim

Man, this blows. Slipknot was the band that got me into music (not just metal). R.I.P., Paul. My thoughts and prayers are with your family and friends.

  • dallascowboyfromhell

Man….this is nuts. I had a chance to see them when they came though about a year ago. I passed because the last album was complete shit….and they were with coheed. I kinda regret that decision now. As seems to be the consensus, I haven’t been a fan for a while, but I can remember being 16 and pissed off with Iowa blaring out of my crappy stock speakers in my ’88 f150. This band bridged the gap between crap and metal for a lot of people, myself included. Sure Paul wasn’t phenomenal, but he was an original part of an original band that had a huge impact on my generation and others too I’m sure.

I’ll see you in hell, Paul. It’ll be a fucking blast.

  • D

Though the hatespeech is inhumane, I wonder what Manowar would say about this. After all, Joey demaio would supposedly “Die for metal”, and the band wanted black arrows of death sent to the hears of false metal bands, so they’re probably throwing a huge party right now. Not spamming, just saying..

    • Fred Durst

Manowar is the one band who is far cheesy-er than Slipknot could ever hope to be.

      • jefff

        Manowar rules!!

  • Lady Death

I used to be a huge Slipknot fan. They were the band that really got me hooked on metal. I sort of moved on from them as I got older, but I will always call myself a maggot. It’s a real shame that Paul died at such a young age, and to all the people on here calling him a dick, grow up. I have seen first hand how drugs can tear apart lives and how hard it is for an addict to get clean. For all you know he was trying to get clean and relapsed, or this was his last night before giving it up forever for his family and he overdid it, leading to an overdose. Or maybe drugs weren’t even involved. Who knows? All I know is yet another great metal musician is gone. In respect for Paul’s family, friends, and fans, keep the insults to yourself. And in memory of Ronnie James Dio, stop saying shit about ANY dead musician! Let something good come about from his death. Keep arguing your opinions about music, defend your favorite band, whatever. But when it comes to the death of anyone have some respect.

R.I.P Paul. You will be missed by many Slipknot and metal fans alike.

and of course Don passed last year

      . . .this year blows.

  • Mel

I’m so sad over this news. It happened minutes from my house and it feels like a part of me has been torn away. Slipknot has been a source of pride and dedication to metal fans in Iowa since their emergence at dotfest all those years ago. I’m so sorry to all the other boys in the band who’ve lost a friend and co-creative spark that helped make Slipknot what it was. It may go on, but may never be the same. R.I.P. Paul. You’ll live in more memories than most of us will be lucky enough to.

  • Lax

I think it’s quite obvious that Slipknot’s last album not only sucked but created a fan base of retarded 10 year olds. But, IOWA was a great album. Slipknot and Vol 3 were okay. I think Slipknot deserves a little more respect than they usually recieve. RIP Paul Gray.

  • Rev. Dom

I never was a Slipknot fan and that alone should kind of bar me from chiming in but I feel truly sorry for this man and his family. Drugs are a real motherfucker and I know more than a few people that have passed away or have become walking casualties due to drug and alcohol abuse so when I hear of a brother in metal that suffered from the same fate I kind of get a little upset even if I did not dig his music. Say what you will, but this guy was a brother in metal and that means a lot to me and used to mean a lot to people who look at metal as more than just a phase or a genre. May death offer you the peace that so eluded you in life.

    • msv81

Kind words from a compassionate individual. Unlike so many others here, your ability to recognize the extremely complex nature of addiction while also choosing to remain non-discriminatory in mourning the loss of a fellow metal brethren is comforting and provides hope for the metal collective as a whole. You may not like Slipknot, but you do not allow your individual preference to music distort the fact that we, as a community, have all suffered yet another great loss today.

Too many of our brothers have fallen lately. I sincerely hope this puzzling trend is over now. As a Slipknot fan myself, I have nothing but the utmost respect for you coming here and saying what you did, regardless of your dislike of the band. More people should follow suit instead of trash talk and spam for no good reason.

      • Waldo

You type like a politician speaks. Just thought I would let you know.

            You were just formal.
Nothing bad about that. And personally, I agree with you completely. I like almost all of Slipknot’s stuff, and it just… blows my mind. This really did come out of nowhere. I sincerely wish his wife and possible child well and… I can’t do anything. But I’m hoping SOMEONE will be there for them.

  • Crusty Hippo

Damn, he was fucking young. RIP, dude. I was a big Slipknot fan, and still am. I used to think 9 members was a little excessive (and still partly do), but nonetheless.. As a whole, they did have an awesome sound that I’ve always liked and respected. So yeah.

Btw, and pardon my ignorance, but as far as bass players go, was he a good one? I’m totally not trying to be a rude douchebag, I’m just genuinely curious how talented he was, and if there was any songs that could back it up.

Thanks in advance for anyone who contributes.

    • Caleb

yes, he was very talented although most of the time he just lay back and kept time without doing any crazy soloing….what a good bass player should do

    • Steve O

No worries, he’s not very audible :P Yeah, he was good. I’ve already posted a few comments about this already. Not so much flashy or technical, but solid. If you want to hear his best basslines though check out the songs Confessions and Do Nothing/Bitchslap.

      • Caleb

yeah the bitchslap bass solo is pretty badass, but y’know in the forum of modern slipknot music he does his job and he does it well, keep time, harmonize occasionally, headbang

First “The Rev” Sullivan, then Peter Steele, then Ronnie James Dio, now Paul Gray.

    He will be missed.

    Bummer…

  • Nick

Thats ashame my symphathy goes out to his family. I saw slipknot on the first ozzfest they played I think 1999 or something and I saw them a number of times after that on various different shows.

  • Anthony

As a huge Slipknot fan, this hits far more close to home than the Dio, Rev, and Peter Steele deaths have. Not to take anything away from those deaths and to say they were less tragic, but when you’re a fan of a band for years and a death comes unexpectedly, it totally hits you in the face.

Paul was also one of the principal songwriters for the band along with Joey since the beginning. He will deftinitely be missed.

    R.I.P.

  • Walker

I am a horrible bass player, with no formal training. Through the magic of the Internet I learned the song Iowa. It really is super easy to play but at the same time it really is an awesome song. Paul will be missed and I highly doubt Slipknot will continue, so this most likely will be the end of the road for a very important band. You love or hate them, the fact is Slipknot did a lot more good then harm, and so many metal bands should thank then as well. Rest in Peace # 2

  • Matthew

This band inspired me to play music – without them I probably wouldn’t be where I am today. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

  • Jim

    Paul, Dio, Steele, The Rev..
I don’t like Slipknot.. but they had a good live show, and its sad to see someone die so young.

  • Trapped_ under_meth

Why do people hate this band so much? I’m not a huge fan but I dig a few songs on every record, and I’ve always thought they are a fun, silly, high energy meat and potatoes metal band to jump around to at gigs.

The fact that people are actively wishing death on these guys baffles me.

    What happened to human decency?

    • msv81

Karma is a bitch and they’ll get what’s coming to them. It’s genuinely revolting to see people say shit like, “I’m glad he’s dead” or “I hope (so and so) is next.” They won’t be singing the same tune when a loved one of theirs passes on, it’s obvious these ignorant assholes have never suffered that type of loss.

Same thing with the buffoons who claim an addict deserves death. Addiction is a serious illness, nobody actively chooses to become a slave to the needle, powder, or pills. Of course, we’re all accountable for our decisions and one can argue it was ill advised to ever touch a deadly substance in the first place but it’s impossible to truly know the events leading up to said decision and just because somebody is an addict doesn’t make them a bad person, rather a troubled soul. I’ve personally witnessed people near and dear to me struggle with the inner demons of drugs and alcohol, it’s utterly devastating.

The loss of Paul hits closer to home than any of the other recent rock star deaths; I was never a huge Dio-era Sabbath fan (or a fan of Dio’s other bands), though I have nothing but immense respect and adoration for what he did for the world of metal. Likewise, even though I don’t like Type-O-Negative, the loss of Peter Steele is equally tragic to the collective metal community. On the other hand, Slipknot was and continues to be one of my favorite bands so hearing about Paul’s demise hurts a lot. I can’t imagine the hurt his wife, family, fellow band members, and loved ones are experiencing at this moment. Even though I’m mourning, I’ve also been blasting Slipknot all day to properly celebrate his achievements; he accomplished more in 38 years than most people on these boards ever will, a fact that is particularly true when it comes to the sub-human scum who wish death upon ANYBODY.

Alas, there will always be people like that, though. I’m glad to see the vast majority of individuals here are being respectful, recognizing this is a fellow human being we’re talking about. Whether you love or hate Slipknot is a moot point and should have zero bearing on how a person reacts to the premature death of another. It is another sad day for the world of metal, here’s hoping we don’t continue to lose more members of our community in the coming months.

Wow, was never a big fan of Slipknot, but any loss in the metal community is still a loss.

We seriously don’t need any more deaths this month, I’m about broke from sending flowers to funerals.

PS Black roses are not cheap ladies.

    HIGH FIVE! ANYONE?…. suck

  • Some Random Dude

Fuck, I grew up to Slipknot. Since I was 12 when the self titled came out and lost interest when all hope is gone arrived. If it wasn’t for Slipknot I probably never would have listened to metal for another 3 or 4 years then I originally did. I’d still be stuck on Lamb of God by now.

  • BetterThanEzra

Who gives a fuck? People die every day, what makes this fuck any different….his music? Please.

    • Cassio

Ok. So i hope yo die tomorrow, ASSHOLE. This is a sad new and we are paying tribute, or just a condolence. there´s nothing wrong with that you MTHRFCKR.

    • Dudedude

So if you were to die tomorrow, would your death affect this many people? Really doubt it man. I really can’t wrap my head around why people nowadays lack any decency. Paul made an impact on so many of us when we were younger, if not for him I wouldn’t have gotten into metal and decent music. Paul, you’ll be in my mind tomorrow while I’m cranking your tunes during class.

    • DemonicLemming

Either mommy and daddy never loved you enough, or you don’t have a single friend worth the name…possibly both. Also, likely stuck in a dead-end job living a dead-end life that’ll never have any impact on people aside from being the asshole behind the counter at McDonald’s they don’t like. Just because your life is squalid and meaningless doesn’t mean others’ lives are the same way.

The reason people care is because he did something they enjoyed, and now they’re sad he’s dead. Rather simple concept.

I enjoyed watching them live at the Forum last march. He was just casually head banging while Chris Fehn was playing with his frets and Paul was strumming. Such great stage presence makes Slipknot one of my favorite bands and one of the top metal bands.
This shit truly sucks there have been a lot of metal musicians dying and getting sick.
I’m really hoping Bill Kelliher makes out it okay I cant bear another one of my favorite metal bands to lose another member.

    RIP Paul Gray

  • Jizzmaster3000

Seems The Rev’s passing had such a positive impact on the universe that several good metal musicians had to be taken out to readdress the balance.

    • Anthony

That or Dimebag needed a drummer, bassist, and singer for his new band.

  • jefff

Not really a big SlipKnot fan, but this shouldn’t be a big suprise, especally in the slipknot inc. keep fuckin around with drugs what would you expect, a long and healthy life? come on, he’s a fuckin adult, anybody who into drugs or abuse achool knows what there doing, it’s so sad that something like this has to happen to so may people, and as of fan of metal you get short changed on new music. it just sucks that there are so many bands out there that can’t keep it together.why can’t they just be cool.

Holy fucking shit. Did not see this one coming. What a shitty start to the day. Slipknot are one of the bands that got me into metal and I still follow their career to this day. RIP Paul.

  • LEE

slipknot will not break up paul wouldnt want that slipknot will replace paul even tho he is unreplacable they wil use stone sours bassist cause he is ther sound techinison long live paul and slipknot

    r.i.p paul

    • Jasper

Do you honestly think that Shawn Economaki will put on a jumpsuit and a mask and that they will just continue? I’m sorry, but I don’t see that happening. Slipknot have repeatedly made clear throughout the years, that they would not continue if one of the band members was to leave the band.

    • Anthony

While a lot of bands have gone on record saying that band members irreplaceable and they’re like brothers and without one of them it wouldn’t work and there would be an imbalance (Korn did this song and dance before Head left, and again before David left), Slipknot seem like one of those bands that would actually hold that promise, and where replacing members would not work and calling it quits would be the best option. They’ve had lineup changes before, but their last lineup change was in 1998 or 99 when they were recording their S/T album. That was also before they embarked on a shit load of touring and had all that stuff between them during the Iowa and Volume 3 era going on. So they’ve had the same 9 guys for the last 12 years (with breaks in between, granted), who have toured together for that long as well. They have tons of time to think about it now with Stone Sour just starting their touring cycle for the new album in a couple of weeks, but when the decision needs to be made, this band may call it quits. I’d be surprised otherwise.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Gary-Sapp/1165456933 Gary Sapp

Like a lot of the people before me have said, I haven’t listened to Slipknot in a while, but they were one of the bands that first got me listening to real Metal (and away from shit like Fall Out Boy and BFMV). Listening to their self-titled album is what eventually led my metal-illiterate self to discover what good music really sounds like (which sadly is why I quit listening to them).

But yeah, say what you will about Slipknot and how much you like or hate them, but Paul will be missed.

  • chalie

to all those who didn’t see it coming…. i did! you shoulda asked!

  • Shinaain

Too young and, by all accounts, a sweet and loving soul. His loved ones have my unqualified sympathy and condolences.

Too many people here are missing the point, which is that whether or not you like Slipknot or appreciate Paul’s musicianship – much less approve of his *reported* personal choices – is completely IRRELEVANT. That’s some of the innane, judgmental bullshit I would expect out of that horrid organization planning to protest Ronnie James Dio’s memorial service – and all THAT man ever did was love. I shouldn’t have to be grateful that the trolls seem to be in a minority here.

    Do better, metal brethren.

This is simply a tragic loss and there’s nothing more to say than I’m very sorry for it. Rest well, Paul.

  • Vakarm

i remember hearing and seeing the video for “Left Behind” when i was like 13. It ruined my life. I never knew anything could sound like this. I eventually went on to more extreme stuff, but Slipknot really initiated me to this kind of heavy music.

    RIP Paul

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ben-Robson/1375985482 Ben Robson

RIP. I’m not a Slipknot fan, but any death in the music community sucks. Here’s hoping his family, bandmates and friends are all right.

  • Byurn

I’m sad now. At least I caught their last tour. He’ll be missed.

  • Corex

I only saw Slipknot once. It was on May 1st, 2009 at the Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto, Canada. It was a f**king fantastic show. Paul Gray rocked out like a motherfucker, as did the rest of the band. Shawn “Clown” wasn’t playing that unfortunately but Corey said they were going at the show extra hard for him in his absence. They did. Since I’ve looked forward to seeing Slipknot again with all 9 members this time. It appears that won’t be happening.

    RIP #2

    • Anthony

I was at that show also. I’m fortunate enough to have seen them 3 other times in my life.

  • Old Skool Metal

Wow. I’m not fan of Slipknot. That being said, a man died and some of you have taken this chance to take shots at the band. This guy was somebody’s son, brother, husband and almost father. Wether you agree or not with someone’s life choices is your own opinion. Nu-metal, although I didn’t enjoy, is a metal genre and the people that listen to it are metalheads no matter what you think. Just like I wouldn’t tolerate anyone talking shit about Dio, people shouldn’t be dicks when talking about this man’s death.

So R.I.P. you get the horns also! \m/

  • Michael

Rest in Peace Paul. I listen to a lot of different music including nu metal, metal, rock etc. I just enjoy music. I really do enjoy slipknot. I thought they did something really creative. It sucks to have a great song writer and musician fall. I don’t think that means that Slipknot is done. I, being in a band myself, would rather my band continue on and keep the legacy going. I’m sure Paul wouldn’t want the last Slipknot record he was on to be the last Slipknot record and I’m sure he’d want to know what direction the next album would be going in because that’s what music is about: creativity and expression. Even if you don’t like Slipknot, please don’t insult the memory of a person and an advocate for metal who died. You don’t have to post.

  • Malorie

Look, Corey Tailor talks aboult Paul death, i found in this link (just need install free access plugin to watch):

Can we all remember that Mike Alexander died as well? Remember him? Evile bassist?

Even though he was nowhere near as well known as Paul, Dio, the Rev or Steele, we should still include him in the metal RIP list. When a metal brother dies, they should all be placed on the same plateau. Respect and best wishes to them all.

  • Dave

Compare the number of comments this post got versus the Dio one. Yeah, that’s pretty much what’s wrong with metal.

    • msv81

Are you really surprised? Slipknot is the focal point of endless controversy and dispute between metal heads; Dio is largely accepted as a founding father of metal and has his throne solidified in metal history without question.

As I mentioned somewhere above in the sea of comments, I was never a huge Sabbath-era Dio fan, nor was I a fan of Dio’s other bands (save for Heaven And Hell, who are pretty fucking sick!). However, I couldn’t conjure up even the slightest negative thought about him. He is honored as a metal God for good reason; his pure awesomeness.

Slipknot, on the other hand, has about as many haters as they do fans. Of course you’re going to see more posts in the “he died” topic of someone from this band.

  • sloshjoshbgosh

it will be like when your dog dies. Ya your sad now, but you will find a cute new puppy in three months. And also look at the publicity standpoint-put someone of some sort of significance behind that axe and they can do a hell of a Paul Gray rememberance tour. SALL ABOUT THE BENJAMINS BABY.

On a seperate note…he had to of O.D.ed, why else would he be found dead in a hotel in his homestate?

  • PULSE OF THE MAGOTS

When he first died i thought about killing my self but than he inspired me to be great i kicked drugs went back to school and got a life thank you phaul grey and slipknot you guys changed my life and saved me
