TEN GENRES OF METAL IN THREE MINUTES

Monday, May 24th, 2010 at 10:30am by

We got a ridiculous number of e-mails this weekend about the below video, which was made by guitarist Raz Ben Ari. But I’m glad you all dig it so much, as it demonstrates that all these various genres aren’t as different from one another as some people would have you believe. In other words: the path to peace is to concentrate on what makes us similar, not what makes us different, y’know? Or something like that.

Great vid. He should have thrown in tech death too though and it would have been pretty much complete.

    • >_>

But then it would be 11 Genres of Metal in 3 Minutes (assuming he cut down the length of some other sections to fit it in). Just doesn’t sound as nifty.

      • Jon

Everything is better if it goes to eleven.

        • bloodsploch

they should just make 13 cuz 13 is the most metal number behind 6/666

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Logan-Holloway/1100588308 Logan Holloway

    awesome!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Gordon-Christie/100001532797537 Gordon Christie

this guy isnt even playing this FAKE

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Joe-Delaney/1545976827 Joe Delaney

yes because this guy clearly took the time and money to get a nice guitar and the unique tunes to fake this video. Shut the fuck up troll

sweet riffs. to me, metal is metal is metal. all the subgenre labels are unnecessary.

    • tom

agreed; I like some bands from a genre, yet no others from the genre. All genres do is help loosely desribe some characteristics of some aspects of a band.
The amount of flame warring that happens over genres on youtube is ridiculous.

    • http://reaper-x.deviantart.com/ Reaper-X

      How are they unnecessary?

      • Jesse

I wouldn’t call them unnecessary; they’re useful to a lot of people that like a band and wanna find other bands like them. But yeah, flame wars are just stupid. If you like that you like what you like, what’s the problem?

  • V

    brilliant

  • Valiant

By far one of the best vids posted in a while.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jay-See/726690352 Jay See

I agree, metal is metal (in general..) but each subgenre represented in the video was clearly distinct and distinguishable from the others present – in my opinion, anyways.
The only exception was the second subgenre (“Heavy Metal”) which had zero contrast to the first (Glam Rock); that one was a bit of a reach for a distinct sound (for just “Heavy Metal”? seriously?)

    • soy el niño más bonito

i thought the prog section was a little weak too. but all in all sweet vid.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Long/100000144612811 Mike Long

I thought the glam rock section sounded more pop-y than the pure heavy metal section

  • zachoid

that was suprisingly pretty good. ^the subgenres are also a lot more noticeable when you throw in vocals, which definitely vary across genres and help shape them

    • Jonathan

Precisely, but still quite an amazing video.

  • Slaughterhouse

    Sweet vid!

  • Greywhind

This is a truly excellent video. The subgenres are all recognizable, though of course you can’t truly represent the full range of any subgenre of metal in one riff. Still, it’s a good video to show people who aren’t fully aware of the general attributes of various subgenres.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sanskar-Wagley/1376400331 Sanskar Wagley

I like how the drums fit with each genre he was playing

    • http://www.flamingtusk.com Zosimus

Most styles of music are largely defined by the rhythms used. The drummer in your band pretty much holds the reins w/r/t what style you happen to be playing.

  • Brian \m/(-_-)\m/

well freakin done. big fan. and clearly israeli, points to him lol

  • Honeynutzz

    NO DEATHCORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    lol that was awesome.

    • Jim

Deathcore is pretty much metalcore fused with death metal.
The genre he did forget was Doom metal (Drone, and sludge).

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Greg-Zeigler/1434866889 Greg Zeigler

each genre got on overage about 18 seconds. That’s like chords of drone metal.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Rufino-Castaneda/100000171789334 Rufino Castaneda

    that was pretty rad

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Glenn-Pillsbury/641369365 Glenn Pillsbury

Cool! Yea, it’s impossible to represent an entire genre in a single riff (or is it?) but he did a good job of that and did it in an interesting way.

  • tiagón

    win!

  • Dexter

progressive metal was bullshit in that video. Overall it’s ok…

    • miguel_md

he would need to whole 3 minutes to make a good example of prog metal:P

  • cgrind

If he had jumped into the crabcore position and played a cliche breakdown while bobbing his his head and baring his teeth at the end of the this video, I wouldv’e had a lolgasm all over my keyboard

    • Ryd1ZZ

I lol’d hard just reading this and imagining it happening. Thanks dude!

  • Ziltoid

Some were iffy (heavy, glam, prog), but for the most part, those were accurate. But this video really does highlight genre differences in riffing style more than anything. Differences are good.

    • Brian \m/(-_-)\m/

dude…where u been? ii cant believe im saying this but m starting 2 get bored without u here lol

      • Ziltoid

I’ve just had lots of shit to do. No time for the internet really. I haven’t posted much at all lately on The Number of the Blog either, but I intend on fixing that now that I have more free time.

  • Andy Synn

It’s been a beautiful day today and to cap it off I’ve just watched that video a few times in a row as it’s genuinely just very enjoyable to watch and hear.

    Damn, I love metal.

And although I agree that the glam/heavy section is a bit indistinct, I immediately thought of Into Eternity when he went into the prog section, so I found it effective to an extent.

In fact I’d say that if one were just to listen to the black/death/thrash/melodeath/prog/metalcore sections you’d effectively hear the start to a new Into Eternity album. They should call this guy.

  • hobo7088

    haha! very well put-together!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ian-Wilmot/1177765489 Ian Wilmot

prog needed more sweeping(cause thats how it is)
and the metalcore needed more uber generic unholy confessions ripoff riffs

    but other than that
    it was awesome

    • Andy Synn

I think he was trying not to focus on the badly done cliches of the styles in question, but on the riffing styles associated with some of the better proponents.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Micheal-Vanderven/502827008 Micheal Vanderven

he coulda threw in deathcore in there for the last few seconds doing that gay ass deathcore break down chord

    but im just being pickey

that metal core riff at the end was tihght ahhahaha

  • Malacoda

His metalcore was closer to deathcore, his melodeath was basically metalcore, and his progressive metal and death metal ones were shite. Everything else was ok.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jay-Klinkhammer/291900025 Jay Klinkhammer

      Oh…you’re THAT guy.

  • Tj

the guy can thrash but as someone who is a big proponent of sub-genre classification I think this only backs up any argument I would make. Clearly you can write a song to encompass a lot of different aspects and genres but a knowledge of what is what and why what is what is essential to writing and talking about music in an intelligent and informed way. without the knowledge and understanding of sub-genres you end up just sounding direction-less.

  • Scrambles

Three more seconds and he could have thrown grindcore in there.

  • smashed potatoes

the metalcore riff couldnt have sounded more like LoG if he had tried.

  • http://www.myspace.com/beforefireofficial Lowell

I agree with Axl…concentrating on what makes us similar is more beneficial to metal as a whole. The over-subdivision of genres tends to divide the Metal scene in any place you go. Ever hear the expression “divide and conquer”? Metal has always been the black sheep of popular music and requires adhesion amongst its followers.

I am in a band that refers to itself as Progressive Melodic Death Metal. I sincerely hate this, but I don’t want to bite the hands that feed us. I prefer to simply call it Metal. Our band is in a place where Metal heads NEED to really stick together. We are secluded out in Hawaii and even further divided on the separate islands. In Honolulu there is a Metalfest that goes on once a year and every loyal Metal fan in Hawaii is there like a big family.

If it’s heavy and aggressive with bashing drums and distorted guitars, and you and your fans can exercise some demons during a set then it’s Metal to me.

    • Ziltoid

But what is wrong with division? Even if we all just call everything “metal,” there will be division, just without the terminology to make it clear (i.e., deathcore and black metal fans will still be hatin’, but just confuse everything). In addition, subgenres help people find the music that they truly like. If it was all just “metal,” I might get Born of Osiris (ewww…) even if I was looking for Cormorant. It can all be under the umbrella term of “metal,” but using that umbrella terms as the only means of defining what artists are is silly and inefficient.

      • Brian \m/(-_-)\m/

theres absolutely nothing inherently wrong with division, and i agree that such broad umbrella genres like “metal” are generally useless, but being so militant about pigeonholing everything to the point that youre not open to anything else is just as useless. its about striking a balance between the two extremes

  • Juergen

    fuckin awesome man!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Aubrey-Ingraham/778175014 Aubrey Ingraham

I only wish I could pull off being able to play one genre of metal let alone 10.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Pete-Simone/60802652 Pete Simone

That whole thing is just made of win doused in win sauce. I love the message it leaves behind after its over. Death metal is thrash metal is black metal is metal is metal is metal. It isn’t so different and we should celebrate what makes us all dig it so much.

  • Nathan

great job! i loved the folk part and metalcore parts the best

  • John

the melodic death metal riff sounds kinda like Spirit Crusher by Death, which makes this video even more awesome

  • chris

Never was that into metal and all of it’s different sub-genres but that was some great guitar. I think what I liked most about this was the comments though…metal fans are awesome; there weren’t really any negative comments unlike the rest of the internet.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Charles-Weeden/100000495859193 Charles Weeden

Absolutely love this video, is there a mp3 I can download?

  • ElMorris

Now I know the basis of all Dream Theater’s compositions. Sadly overrated they are.

  • Will

The first two riffs sounded like Queensryche

  • timmay

hmm..methinks its all Megadeth and Metallica riffs

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Utku-Kocaer/100001156874690 Utku Kocaer

    kinda awesome good jobe dude

  • victorvenom

Please tell me somebody noticed how drums defined genres as well as guitar riffs! No two genres had the same drums, and I think that is so important for defining them as guitar riffs.

  • http://sirjorge.com/blogx sir jorge

    quality talent right there

  • norm

Great guitar player, not sure about all the genres though.

  • johndoughy

    This guy’s tone is supreme!

  • TithonusSyndrome

Oh look, riff salad. I too can string together unrelated riffs in the same key, I just don’t have the outrageous fucking gall to pretend that it proves anything. Except maybe that generic, formulaic music is uninspired, no matter what genre it’s in.

    • Doomed616

The riffs may be unrelated, but they’re awesome and he managed to combine them pretty good. Anyone can claim that he’s better than him like you do, but you need to prove it dude…

  • dahhhoooogaaa

the vid say metalcore but, he didn’t do a very good job with that aand, what about hardcore, grind, grindcore, deathcore. they don’t always sound the same

    • AetherJake

But they do all suck, however.

  • Brennan

Is he using a harmonizer? cuz I can hear the harmonies to some of his leads but I don’t think he’s playing them.
