LOU KOLLER FROM SICK OF IT ALL’S QUINTESSENTIAL GUIDE TO HARDCORE – DAY SIX

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010 at 3:00pm by

To celebrate the release of Sick of it All’s awesome new album, Based on a True Story, we asked SOIA vocalist Lou Koller to compile the definitive list of quintessential hardcore albums. Luckily for us and all of you, he agreed! So we’ll be running one entry a day from Lou’s list of the top-ten (+1) hardcore records of all time for the next couple of weeks. You can read his first installment here, his second installment here, and his third installment here, his fourth installment here, and his fifth installment here; the sixth one is after the jump…

Negative Approach, Tied Down

Hailing from Detroit, Negative Approach were one of the first “heavy” hardcore bands to get the sound right. They were heavy without sounding like a metal band, and singer John Brannon’s throaty style influenced generations of singers to come and became the standard in hardcore for years. Armed with great songs like “Said and Done,” “Tied Down Nothing” and the erie, heavy “Evacuate,” this is a classic and a must have for all. They have reformed recently, and still sound great!

Later,

Lou

Based on a True Story is out now on Century Media. Visit Sick of it All on MySpace for tour dates and all the latest news from the band.

    Fucking right!

You said it. This is some of the most pissed off hardcore I have yet to hear duplicated. Cept for maybe Hellmouth. The title track “Tied Down” makes me wanna punch a Juggalo standing in front of a bath house.

      • Genial Gentile

The vocal delivery alone is worth the price of admission.

Neglect is pretty pissed off. About living no less

  • Satta Massa Ganna

    The Offenders – Texas hardcore!!

  • Ares

This one’s a classic. I just dig this blog because I really don’t know shit about hardcore.

This has to be one of the better lists published on this site – and written by a source with some serious credibility. Kudos MS!

Can’t argue with the choice. Matter of fact, every choice Lou has made has been fantastic so far. Not a single dud yet, can’t wait for the next entry tomorrow.

    A+++++

Waiting on Void next, their side of the Void/Faith split is still one of my favourite records of all time.

  • Lou SOIA

Glad you guys are liking the list so far. But like I said I had to leave a lot of great ones out, they only let me put ten in. (but I’m trying to sneak an extra in) Void/Faith split is another must have but it didn’t make the list sorry. It should be there but no room. I love the Offenders! Got to see them at cbgb’s back in the day, they had some great 7 inches and 2 (?) great albums. I would love to cover their song “Face Down In The Dirt”! Maybe MetalSucks can give me a space like this monthly where we can talk all about these and the more obscure bands that people should hear. But I am a lazy bastard and would rely heavily on your in put! Later LOU

” Maybe MetalSucks can give me a space like this monthly”

      YES!YES!YES!

You hear that Metal Sucks? If you can spare the space to post some of the silly crap you post, like Rich Halford and Boobi Porn Lady Talks About Sex, you can definitly give this man a monthly spot.

      Please.

as a huge long time fan – i saw these guys in a small club in pvd 2 years ago. i watched 4 haggard, weathered scrawny biker/hippie looking guys take the stage. great, you just can’t expect old things to ring true. this is going to be disappointing.

i was fucking wrong! they were as focused and fierce; tight and relevant as ever. the tore through their set with purpose and vengeance, they sounded incredible.

angry, suffering, enraged and vicious describes this heavy, honed hardcore from detroit.

Didnt mention poison idea could it be its on the list?

      • http://www.last.fm/user/markandrew78 materialist

poison idea have every right to be on this list. they have an embarrassment of riches for one to choose from.
personally i;d choose feel the darkness or ian mackaye EP.. but i reckon lou’ll choose pick your king or kings of punk (if they are indeed to be included)

John Brannon has the most intense voice in hardcore. I saw them when they reformed last year in Detroit after 24 years, might as well been 24 days. Didn’t miss a beat. They are going to be here on July 31st, the day after the Warped tour. Gonna be a great weekend….JOE
