LUCKILY FOR EYES SET TO KILL, “THE LISTENING” IS ONLY THE SECOND-WORST SONG I’VE HEARD TODAY

Monday, May 3rd, 2010 at 12:30pm by

I’ve gotten some press releases about Eyes Set to Kill before, but I must have either ignored them or listened to the music and then quickly deleted it from the annals of my memory. ‘Cause “The Listening,” the new song the band just debuted on Noisecreep, is my first real impression of them.

And you know what they say: you only get one chance to make a first impression. And this band just blew it.

ROCKSTAR ENERGY UPROAR: YET ANOTHER SUMMER PACKAGE TOUR/FEST THINGY

Monday, May 3rd, 2010 at 12:00pm by

UPDATE: The actual line-up and dates for this tour after the jump. Still pretty awful. Original story below.

At some point, aren’t all these big package tours just gonna cannibalize one another? It seems like they’re all either competing for the same audience, or at least for a portion of the same audience. And now Metal Insider tells me that there’s gonna be another one, which, like Mayhem, will be sponsored by Rockstar Energy Drink: Uproar.

Gotta love the dudes whose job it is to sit around and think of new names for these things.

KATATONIA TO BRING A NEW NIGHT OVER NORTH AMERICA THIS FALL

Monday, May 3rd, 2010 at 11:30am by

katatonia north america 2010 tourThe last time I saw Katatonia was a truly unforgettable night, a Scandinavian metal boner-fest to be sure: they played New York City along with Swallow the Sun, Insomnium and Scar Symmetry. I also picked up my beloved Insomnium t-shirt, which I still get questions about (“When did Insomnium come to the U.S.?”). Truth is that I really wasn’t familiar with most of Katatonia’s music at that time so I couldn’t fully appreciate their set, but now that I’ve been versed in the epic ways of these mighty Swedes I’m very glad that I’ll get another chance this Fall when they return to the U.S. on the MetalSucks-sponsored “New Night Over North America” 2010 Tour. Swallow the Sun are tagging along in support once again (maybe I’ll get to bro down with their super awesome keyboard player!) along with Israeli prog metallers Orphaned Land, so this promises to be another night to remember.

In case you missed the dates when they were announced a couple of weeks ago, we’ve reposted them for your convenience after the jump. Check out Katatonia’s new EP The Longest Year, featuring one new song and a couple of Night is the New Day remixes, out now on Peaceville.

“WHY TRY” AND EVEN LISTEN TO THE NEW LIMP BIZKIT SONG?

Monday, May 3rd, 2010 at 11:00am by

I don’t know. I don’t know I don’t know I don’t know. I’ll bring it up in therapy this week.

In any case, I am now about to listen to this song for the first time, and just type out my thoughts as I do. Should I get high for this, take the edge off a little? I think I’m gonna get high for this. Be right back.

TAKE A “SMOKE BREAK” WITH THE BLED

Monday, May 3rd, 2010 at 10:30am by

When the hell did The Bled get so heavy? I’m still not sure, but I’m not complaining. I actually haven’t listened to their new album Heat Fetish since they streamed it on their MySpace page in February and I listened to it twice in a row, but this new video for “Smoke Breaks,” which debuted on Noisecreep last week, reminds me that I really, really ought to get back to it. I think we’ve all had fantasies of smoke breaks like this one the fine worker bee chap in this video indulges in.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DON’T LET JOEY BELLADONNA RE-JOIN ANTHRAX AGAIN

Monday, May 3rd, 2010 at 10:00am by

What. A. Douche.

Excuse me if there are a lotta typos in this post – it’s hard to see the monitor through my tears. Why am I weeping as I type this? Because I just read the following on Blabbermouth:

Former ANTHRAX singer Joey Belladonna was seen with ANTHRAXdrummer Charlie Benante and bassist Frank Bello this past Wednesday (April 28) at the FOZZY concert at B.B. King Blues Club & Grill in New York City, prompting speculation that he is in talks to rejoin the band in time for the group’s upcoming “Big Four” shows in Europe withMETALLICAMEGADETH and SLAYER. (Belladonna lives in upstate New York while Benante is a Chicago resident, making it somewhat unlikely that this was simply a chance encounter.)

Oh dear sweet God, I’m sorry I ever doubted your existence. Please stop punishing me. Please please please make it so Joey Belladonna is going nowehre near fucking Anthrax ever again. Unless it’s the disease and not the band, in which case, y’know. Rock on.

OZZFEST 2010 LINE-UP ISN’T AS BAD AS WE THOUGHT IT WOULD BE

Monday, May 3rd, 2010 at 9:30am by

So unless you managed to stay away from a computer this entire weekend – and good for you if you did – you’ve probably already seen the line-up for Ozzfest 2010, which was unveiled this past Friday evening. While our source was right that this year’s incarnation of the tour would be scaled back – it’s only hitting six cities over the course of about a week and half – a whole lot of the bands we’d heard would be playing the fest aren’t. In fact, if you can’t quite consider it a stellar line-up, that’s probably only because so many great bands were already swept up by other big package tours; maybe I’m being too nice because a large chunk of the second stage consists of bands I really like or at least respect, my feeling is that if this line-up doesn’t send anyone running for tickets, well, it’s not exactly something to be scoffed at, either. My own thoughts on all the bands and artists after the jump… plus dates, natch.

SATURDAY BAND TO GET DESPERATE TO: TIMES OF DESPERATION

Saturday, May 1st, 2010 at 1:14pm by

Sacramento’s Times of Desperation are a frenetic, thunderous two-piece who pummel and destroy.

I have had the good fortune of crossing paths with their live shows a couple times before in Seattle, and each time it was both difficult to make sense of what the fuck was happening and impossible to not drop one’s jaw to the floor…..there is so much fury and contained chaos in every epic song, and while that can be a bit much for some, it truly has to be seen to be believed.

I suspect some of you may scoff at the boomy, shite-quality recordings up on the band’s MySpace page, but if you can look past that there are many insane musical things happening for your listening pleasure.
