NEW PARKWAY DRIVE VIDEO DESERVES A BETTER BAND

Yesterday an anonymous reader e-mailed us to say that Parkway Drive’s new video, for the song “Sleepwalker,” is “FUCKING SICK!” He or she (but let’s face it, probably he) did admit, however, that he was “unsure about the song,” which was wise – ’cause certain aspects of this video are kinda cool, but HOLY SHIT IS THIS SONG FUCKING AWFUL. It is the very definition of a Triple A riff. In fact, if anyone can figure out a better song that just happens to go with it, I’ll give that person a cookie.*

      Well, the end is terrible. The whole “inspiring solo moment” which sounded really fake and forced… but at least the vocals sounded real and all. Well… mostly. That was a sick video though, with all the special effects. Love it when the skin gets ripped off of his hands.

    I’m still deciding about this song, but Parkway Drive’s other albums are awesome…especially Horizons. And I suggest watching the concert on the DVD, because it shows that the just kill it live.

      I saw them at the Thrash and Burn tour last year I believe and they were boring as hell. They just stood in place and played their songs and got off stage. The only time they moved was when a breakdown came up and then they all headbanged at the same time. It all looked so choreographed and fake, like they planned all their moves. That could be due to the fact that I had seen DEP a couple days before and those guys put on a fucking amazing show, but either way it wasn’t impressive. I like when I see bands and they look like they are “in the moment” I guess and their stage show seems more spontaneous than planned.

    Ok this is an overreaction. MS writers are just slurping on Justin Foley too hard right now to form an actual opinion.

    ALSO THIS VIDEO BLOWS, imo. I’m not sure what everyone is talking about– it looks like some weird anti-drug (Above the Influence) commercial or something… Don’t get me wrong I like PwD, but honestly I’d rather just see them play in a warehouse with pictures of the ocean compared to this.

    A) Parkway Drive don’t want to reinvent the wheel– they want to create fun, heavy, metalcore. They succeed a very high percentage of the time. This is one of those times. (Admittedly, the closing portions of the song are indeed weaker musically.) Sure it’s a little generic, but for some quick, high-energy headbanging, it certainly gets the job done. And it doesn’t shout “Dora the Explorer” to close out the song, either.

    B) Nothing against Justin Foley or The Austerity Program (although I don’t like the majority of their sound), but this is not a “Taco Bell Riff” or whatever pretentious name he came up with. If writing successful catchy, hooky riffs (i.e. this song) was so easy, why wouldn’t every one do it?

    Answer: Oh wait, TAP is too pretentious and cool and pretentious and mysterious and minimalist and pretentious to write songs that people might enjoy or to which people would head bang or have stuck in their heads for more than 10 secs after listening.

    **Hint: his 90-minute Taco Riff is not good, fyi.**

        jtquake thank you for making an intelligent argument in PD’s defense. Don’t get me wrong I actually really enjoy The Austerity Program I also love bands liek The Dillinger Escape Plan and Isis and The Ocean, Meshuggah, Gojira and tons of other bands that this site likes to give constant blow jobs to. But They just bash at anything that Isn’t the first of a genre. Parkway Drive are not looking to be the next beardo elitist metalhead wankfest band, and have never claimed or attempted to be in any way shape or form. Hell they don’t even claim to be a metal band only one of their members listens to metal the lead guitarist the rest of them grew up listening to punk and hardcore and guess what that is what they play. You can insult them all you want but there is no denying that they have quite the following; even to the extent that ITunes charges 1.29$ (Canadian) for their songs, this only happens when an artist or specific song gets downloaded EXTREMELY frequently, only top 40′s pop artists ever achieve this status yet the entire PD discography costs this price where as most music is only 0.99$ per song.

        These boys took a classic hardcore DIY attitude and took their music worldwide. They draw hundreds and thousands of fans at all their shows now and when I saw them in Toronto last time they headlined here I have never seen a crowd more into the music or more moved by the band’s mere presence in the room. Their live show is entertaining They are energetic, charismatic, intense, powerful and just all around fun.

        I don’t normally feel the need to disagree with the editors of this site so strongly but this is a case where I need to.

        I understand this is a blog and these are personal opinions and I don’t need to read them yakkity yakkity yack… But seriously what is with this mindset that a band has to be so far off the fucking deep end that no one dares tread in the same waters as them automatically makes for good music and that a band using a tried and true formula to create fun music that is concise effective and that translates well to a live setting is automatically shitty.

        You guys think of yourselves as on the cutting edge of musical taste well guess what you aren’t. Listening to strange music for the sake of it being strange music; and that only you and maybe 13 other people on earth enjoy or know about it does not mean you have superior taste in music. Open your mind cut loose and have a little fun. Okay so maybe hardcore (well modern hardcore) Is not your cup of tea fine go listen to some new Black Metal or Death Metal or you know what would be even better? Put on a record by any Sumeriancore band. Don’t think. Just let the groove take you. Enjoy it because it makes your body want to move not because it’s weird and different.

        This music is no different than a new Slayer album or Cannibal Corpse. Believe me I love these bands but guess what if you announce they have a new record coming out I can already tell you what it will sound like. Like all of their other fucking albums! Very Little changes yet you praise those bands for sticking to their guns but a young band wants to play metalcore or hardcore in the most traditional sense and suddenly they suck. Hypocrisy at it’s best.

        I’m not asking that you enjoy Parkway Drive. Just that you come up with a valid reason for disliking them. Saying they sound like other metalcore bands doesn’t count tons of bands sound like Meshuggah, and Slayer, And Black Sabbath, and yes while you point out the flaws in those bands you will still praise them despite their blatant plagiarizing of the source material.

        All I want is a little journalistic integrity.

    Parkway Drive is my guilty pleasure. I can’t stand most metalcore out there but I actually do enjoy PD quite a bit. This song is no exception. Just a simple, fun song to rock out to.

    Seriously though, Australia needs more bands like Parkway Drive. There’s a lot of them, but nowhere near the same level though.

    And I think you’ll find “I Killed The Prom Queen” are from Adelaide, S.A, Australia lads!

    Go listen to “Breaking Point” or “Frostbite” and then tell me again that Parkway Drive suck. I can fully agree when you shit on bands with no talent, but PD have it in spades. They’re good live, too, unlike bands like Every Time I Die or The Acacia Strain who get glorified on this site.

    I’m glad that there is a large proportion of other people who also thing PwD are quite good. Don’t get me wrong, I love metalsucks but sometimes the way you guys look down on music just because it is part of a commercial or popular genre is really irritating. I’ve liked Parkway for a while now, not for the reasons suggested by Justin Foley, but because I saw them live and they won me over. I listen to a lot of metal, hardcore and rock music from Darkthrone to Terror to Rush to The Melvins and as far as I’m concerned, so long as the band is making music for the right reasons and can show their chops both live and on record then they’re fine by me. I hate Oceano, Bullet for my Valentine, BrokenCYDE and all of the other crappy generic bands who seem to be only in the industry for the money/jailbait but it seems like you guys just take one listen to most new bands and immediately tar them with the same brush.

    Oh, and with regards to that dumb post by Justin Foley, I’d be ashamed if it had taken me two and a half hours to record that piece of shit he posted. It is clear from just listening to it once that it is the product of someone with no understanding of the genre he is attempting to mimic. I used to have a lot of respect for The Austerity Programme but in mocking other bands because he believes his band has more integrity he has shown himself for the pretentious dillweed that he is.
