I’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO SEE BATON TWIRLERS DANCE TO DREAM THEATER

Monday, June 21st, 2010 at 3:00pm by

A song’s got to be pretty damned well-known to be played by a marching band. And though no Dream Theater songs have or ever will approach the ubiquity of a modern day marching band staple like “Iron Man,” that one of their songs is being covered by the Teal Sound Drum & Bugle Corps speaks to the band’s longevity and staying power. The complex arrangements of DT’s music make it suitable for marching band cover and I have to say these guys do a pretty good job of it, especially given some of those righteous time signatures. Although that metronome is annoying as fuck.

Apparently Teal Sound are a traveling independent troupe so it’s not like you’re gonna hear Dream Theater at your next Big Ten football halftime show (Go Blue!), but still, if I were a member of Dream Theater I’d be pretty damn psyched/flattered by this.

    Vince, you’re a Michigan fan?

I’m halfway between disappointment and pity.

    (I kid… mostly.)

Two metal covers featuring tubas posted in one month. What are the odds?

  • Sean Browne

This isn’t the first time these guys did Dream Theater. Back in 2004 their program was called “Delusions: The Music of Dream Theater” – Metropolis Part I: The Sleeper and the Miracle, Goodnight Kiss V, Dance of Eternity, Overture I. Check it out – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aAjdYMwieP8

as a former marching band saxophonist, i enjoy the hell out of this for two reasons:

    1. it’s dream theater
    2. it sheds light on the fact that competitive bands/drum and bugle corps generally play some really technical and epic music. marching band’s not just for dorks anymore!

    • Jackie Treehorn

Yeah! Playing really technical and epic music makes you not a dork, right?

      • Alaskan King Crabcore

What’s your point? TONS of bands play technical music. What’s more dorky than locking yourself in a practice room so you can shred/blast/whatever? It’s immaterial. If the music is good, who cares how dorky it is?

i was kidding around. yeesh. dorks are dorks no matter what music they play. as a lifelong dork myself, i can confirm.

  • Prometheusonfire

Teal Sound is a good little drum corps. FYI: Don’t call drum and bugle corps marching bands. It’s something close to calling a death metal band black metal.

    • Scourge441

This. For all intents and purposes it’s the same idea (marching on a field, playing music), but there’s differences in instrumentation and drill design and a few other aspects.

Also, Vince, if you’re a Michigan fan, you might be interested to know that I march cymbals at UMass and the UMass marching band will be traveling to Michigan when our teams play each other.

    • yonder

Seconded. Also, don’t call a colorguard – the people with the flags and rifles – baton twirlers. That stuff is a lot harder than it looks.

  • Wilson

I can’t listen to it with that metronome

  • Matt

While I enjoy this site, I COMPLETELY enjoyed sitting in the Big House last year and hearing Ohio State fans chant O-H-I-O as your fans were walking out of the stadium.

    Had to throw that in.

  • farts

Does no one else notice how sloppy this is? Its horrible to try and listen to especially with the click going.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ben-Robson/1375985482 Ben Robson

of course it’s sloppy. this is a practice session. drum corps season just started.

  • Sean Browne

that metronome is pretty annoying. hopefully someone will post some decent video from a real performance instead of this early rehearsal.

also, their website says it is a Dream Theater + Coheed & Cambria show. did you hear the Coheed & Cambria parts?

  • poopy

did anyone notice that sweet warlock bass at the end of the clip? soooooo metal
