SLEEP GIVETH, COALESCE TAKETH AWAY

Following months of speculation, reunited doom metal gods Sleep have announced a string of dates following their appearance at the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival in upstate New York. I guess someone’s puttin’ up a big stack of bills for Sleep to do this, because all of those dates fall in a row without any days off: in other words, they’ll be flying from show to show and backlining gear. That costs mucho moolah. Between this Sleep reunion and the recent success of High on Fire, it sure is a good year to be Matt Pike (or one of his fans). Neurosis drummer Jason Roeder will be replacing original drummer Chris Hakius on these shows; no exact reason is given for Hakius’ absence. Check out Metal Insider for details about the additional six dates in Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, Austin, Portland and San Francisco.

Meanwhile, following a stellar return to form in their early 2009 release Ox, Lambgoat is reporting that recently reunited post-metallers Coalesce will return to hibernation after a fun-filled two years of recording, releasing not one but two records, and a ton of touring. In a public statement, bassist Nathan Ellis was very careful in his choice of words — “This is a good time for a break,” as in a break, not a break-up — so all you Coalesce freaks out there shouldn’t get your panties up in a bunch. I’m sure they’ll be back at some point. In the meantime the members will be working on their new homes and businesses, finishing their PhDs and lying supine on the couch.

The lord giveth and the lord taketh away. You win some, you lose some. Yin and yang. Sleep and Coalesce.

they could do the first three shows in a bus or an RV no problem… and considering the cost of chartering a bus, flying for the second half of the dates isn’t going to be that much more expensive than driving, especially since the shows are back to back, when you consider what you have to pay for extra drivers, overdrive charges, and the like (not to mention that you can’t drive from chicago to austin in time to play the next show).

I’m still kind of pissed about Coalesce. Any break is too long. You forgot that they recorded a stellar single in 2007, by the way. Salt and Passage has some of their best lyrics ever.

As for Sleep, fuck it. I’ll resist the urge to troll, especially because a great deal of people whose tastes I respect enjoy their music.

Coalsece Post Metal? The fuck are you smoking?

  • Sylvester

    Fuck yeah on Sleep!!
I’ll be at the Austin show come hell or high water.
Even without Haikus, this should be killer. Roeder is a great drummer.

Saw the two gigs last year, you’re in for a treat America. One of the crunchiest live sounds I’ve ever heard and the guys seemed really into it, any fan should track down the bootlegs from those gigs before heading to these. Can’t begrudge them the reunion bandwagon, they got nothing but new amps, weed and respect last time round.

Hakius retired from music two years ago. He quit Om and Shrinebuilder (which is why Dale Crover is involved). He’s currently… farming turnips or whatever a guy who smoked that much weed throughout his twenties would do.

I would like to see Sleep, but they aren’t coming to Canada any time soon. I’ll take High on Fire in July instead. :D

I didn’t expect the reunion to go this long actually

    so i feel lucky

I just died a little-a world without an active Coalesce is a world I don’t want to live in.

Sorry to break it to ya’, but there is no Sleep reunion without Chris. This is like Taime and Brent doing reunion shows without the other original guys, and calling it Faster Pussycat.

      Or not really, at all.

I might need to get a passport. Finally something worth going to the US for!

Coalesce just tweeted (I hate myself for writing that):

“translation for myspace update: we are home, and have no immediate plans. we are not broken up or on hiatus.”

    Chillax, people. Everything’s fine.

I cant believe this was posted… i just dug out my first and last Coalesce purchase – “there is nothing new under the sun” and I still feel the same way about it now as I did when I bought it.

I want to break the cd and use its jagged pieces to shove into my eardrums so I will never hear again. Fuck you Coalesce i want my 10 bucks back. What a piece of shit of a covers album , fucking richard cheese is better produced and at least brings “it”.

    go to hell fred durst.
