TOO SOON? VINCE’S BEST OF 2010… SO FAR

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010 at 4:00pm by

census 2010Believe it or not, 2010 is just about halfway over. Holy fuck!

I compile these half-year lists every year in June in part to get you all arguing, but mostly so come December I can look back at them to make sure I’m not forgetting anything… oh yeah, THAT awesome album that came out all the way back in January! Came out so long ago it seems like last year. Thanks to Anton OyVey, who writes out his yearly lists on the back of a torah scroll, for inspiring me to get my ass in gear and write these down.

Of course there are a ton of awesome albums still to come in 2010, some of which have been announced and some of which haven’t. But if I were to compile my “year end” list from albums that have been released as of today, here are the ones — in no particular (alphabetical) order ’cause I’m non-commital like that — that would be in the running. A short-list, if you will. Certainly not all of them will make the cut… but yeah, you get the point:

Deftones – Diamond Eyes

Ihsahn – After

Keep of Kalessin – Reptilian

Kvelertak – s/t

Ludicra – The Tenant

Mantric – The Descent

Mutiny Within – s/t

Nachtmystium – Addicts: Black Meddle Part II

Nevermore – The Obsidian Conspiracy

Periphery – s/t

The Ocean – Heliocentric

Ratt – Infestation

Sevendust – Cold Day Memory

Shining – Blackjazz

Unleashed – As Yggdrasil Trembles

White Wizzard – Over the Top

What am I forgetting? I’m sure you’ve all got your opinions. Share ‘em in the comments. As if you needed an invitation.

Yeah I’ve listened to the album 3 times and there are good songs and not so good ones. But the dudes got a nice pair of chords and their best is yet to come. Probably not gonna make it though,

          • slaytanic

This band has been getting rave reviews from Rob Halford and Bruce Dickenson…it doesn’t get more metal then that…fall off new jacks, Mutiny Within has redefined the sound of what metal should be amidst all the generic break down cookie cutter shit that has been flooding the scene and making music unmemorable. This band will have longevity where others will just fade away….

  • Vlygar

    Howl – Full of Hell
    Levi/Werstler – Avalanche of Worms

  • Lucifersmile

Where’s the death metal? Hour of Pennance, Brain Drill, Cenotaph or Danzig and Triptykon? You’re missing a lot of good shit.

I don’t see what the big deal is about Shining. Maybe I should give it another listen, I dunno.

The Ocean deserves to be on any top list.

    • Coreigh

Ill second that for the Ocean

      • Balls

I would fully agree, but Heliocentric kinda blows…Ive never laughed that hard listening to a metal album.
Its quite disappointing because Ive been spending a lot of time with Precambrian, and its quickly becoming one of my favorite albums put out in the last 5 years….so fucking epic.

  • Igottawocket

A second on Howl- Full of Hell, then:
Red Sparowes- The Fear is Excruciating, But Therein Lies the Answer
    Rosetta- A Determinism of Morality

    I’m sure there’s more I’m forgetting…

As if you needed another opinion on it…The new Red Sparowes is really that good. I have probably listened to that CD no less that 50 times.

      • yetzer hara

i got it immediately after reading about it here and have already listened to it four or five times today.

        • Truthlies

I hope you fucking paid for it

    • JimmyBagODonuts

red sparowes sounds pretty good… sounds like North which i recommend… their newest cd “what you were” has vocals but their older stuff is all instrumentals… i def suggest listening to the jam “ruins”

    • Dwarfskeet

Overkill’s new release was pretty kickin’.

    • Lycanthrope

I second Overkill and HoF. Warbeast didn’t do anything for me, though

  • http://www.myspace.com/palehorseofhell lord assenfroth

ihsahn and keep of kalessin’s releases of this year have made my all-time favorite list, not just the yearly one

  • Alex_P

I agree with one third of it, and have a few which I vehemently disagree with. My reaction will be to live with it.

Now, my big recommendation to you is Goner by Early Graves. Utterly furious suicidal crust. Other than that, I can sort of recommend the Foreshadowing to you, as long as you’re into that sort of Euro-gothic doom.

If you enjoyed Keep of Kalessin, try Istapp. I’m not a huge fan, but…

    • GoingDeaf?

Just picked up the new Early Graves today…. haven’t had a chance to give it more than a cursory listen, but it’s killer so far. I loved the last album and actually prefer the production on that one, but the rawness of Goner works too. Looking forward to seeing them live again.

      • Alex_P

I never heard the first one. As soon as I get back to Montreal and have download access again, that will change.

    • Alex_P

By the way, folks. Harvey Milk are purposely omitted. Both of their albums are on my list thus far, but I’m aware that they aren’t his style.

Celeste, though. Omitted on purpose or forgotten?

Mammoth Grinder kicks ass. I found them a while ago, and I completely dig their sound.

  • jeff

    Veil of Maya- [id]

  • BigJoe

These should be on the list . . .
    Borknagar – Universal
    Kalmah – 12 Gauge
    Creamatory – Infinity
Aeternam – Disciples of the Unseen
    Schizo – Hallucination Cramps
    Catamenia – Cavalcade

  • bucketochicken

Butch Walker – I Liked It Better When You Had No Heart (obviously not metal, but still the best album of the year over all (so far – still an Ian Moore album waiting to drop!)).

Cynic, I suppose. Otherwise, I don’t think there are any you missed that I’d put on there.

    Alcest – Ecailles de Lunes

      ABSO LUTELY

  • M’Kay

Alcest, Son of Aurelius, and Rosetta.

And even though I haven’t heard it yet… The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza

  • John

Addicts is definitely the best album this year. I cannot imagine an album that could possibly top it.

  • Guest

This list is desperately missing Overkill’s Ironbound.

  • TonyT

2010 has been pretty meh for me overall. Especially compared to last year.

    • msv81

I tend to agree. Misery Index and Deftones are the two best releases IMO. The Ocean’s new one is damn good, too. But overall this year has been disappointing compared to last.

2011 will be another monster year; new releases by Tool, A Perfect Circle (possibly), Machine Head, Lamb of God, Slipknot (possibly?), and NIN, among others. Cannot wait.

      • Gaia

Opeth and Gojira are due too.

      • Vlygar

Hopefully new Morbid Angel as well.

      • Alex_P

        You’re forgetting one.

Control Denied: When Man and Machine Collide. It’s due out either this year or next, and I’m expecting a perfect record.

        • Austin

Are you fucking serious?!!!! So, the world will be graced by further compositions from Chuck Shuldiner and no one has mentioned this yet? What the fuck! Not to mention the Digiorgio/Christy ownage to be had. This oversight is unforgivable!!!

          • Alex_P

Just read any Richard Christy interview.

Apparently, it’s compositionally supposed to be closer to tSoP than tFAoE.

Also, the Mantas demos from 83-84 are getting reissued.

      • elston_gunn

I’m not expecting Agalloch’s new album until 2011, either. That’s one I’ll pick up on the day it’s released.

        • Jake Jones

You might not hear about it.

  • Corex

You left out High On Fire.

  • Gabe

Considerring the stock you guys bought on Son of Aurelius, I’m surprised to not see it on the list. Also, Solution .45, because, like, it’s better than anything on any list. Ever. Including the top ten WWII Movies of all time. ESPECIALLY the top ten WWII Movies of all time.

  • GREGDOUT

Heathen had one of the best thrash albums in the last decade, where they at?

  • Daniel N.

I’ve also quite enjoyed As I lay Dying’s new album as well as Beneath the Sky’s new one.

    Ufomammut’s ‘eve’ also is solid

And how can you forget Dilling Escape Plan?

My favorite of the year so far has been Helliocentric. I’d be shocked if it doesn’t win multiple album of the year awards.

  • Jacob

    Agree with Ludicra. Also:

    Thou – Summit
    Ufomammut – Eve
    Howl – Full of Hell
Harvey Milk – A Small Turn of Human Kindness
High on Fire – Snakes for the Divine

  • shpostal

High On Fire’s “Snakes For the Divine”
    Overkill “Ironbound”
    Fear Factory “Mechanize”
Whitechapel “A New Era of Corruption”

  • Gaia

The Good Stoner Albums this half of the year:-

    Droids Attack – Must Destroy
    Rotor – 4
    Barnburner – Bangers
    Blowback – 800 Miles
    Cloudkicker – ]]][[[
    Cathedral – The Guessing Game
Fatso Jetson – Archaic Volumes (EXCELLENT ALBUM)
The Flight of Sleipnir – Lore
I’ll eat your face – Irritant
    Jucifer – Throned in Blood
Karma to Burn – Appalachian Incantation
Melvins – The Bride Screamed Murder
Pain of Salvation – Road Salt, pt 1

    • Alex_P

Folks, take note. This list is full of win.

Although Barn Burner is two words.

    • john

the new cloudkicker album is FUCKING INCREDIBLE. literally mindlowing, and its quickly climbing the ranks in my “most played” playlist. i just wish it was longer than 3 songs.

      • http://www.myspace.com/fallenfew BobFish

Agreed, its got more feeling in it than any album that I’ve heard this year, and he doesnt say a word. Beautiful.

        • Alex_P

Backed hard. It blows everything else he’s ever done out of the water.

    • http://crescentshield.com Crescent Shield

The Flight of Sleipnir – Lore

Wow someone else like this! Only thing I’ve heard this year that I think is worth owning. I haven’t been keeping up too much though.

  • shpostal

And when will we get a followup to Machine Head’s “The Blackening”? Now there’s a disc I’d hate to have to try to equal or top. And it’s been a long time since we’ve heard from Morbid Angel. I’m looking forward to a new studio effort from Meshuggah, too.

  • kaffebaggel

Your missing Howl, High on fire, red sparowes and Rosetta but a big FUCK YEAH for including Mantrics – the descent. A great album!

  • kaffebaggel

And the bride screamed murder! How could i forget the greatest band in the world?

  • Dysenteric

The 2010 albums I own (like any of you fuckers care, hahaha…):

Decrepitaph – Beyond the Cursed Tombs (one of my all time faves)
Circle of Dead Children – Psalm of the Grand Destroyer
    Watain – Lawless Darkness
    Fleshgod Apocalypse – Mafia
Phlegethon – Drifting in the Crypt
    Revolting – The Terror Threshold
    Super Mario Galaxy 2 OST

I got the Watain double LP earlier today. Haven’t got around to getting it out of the box yet. And I haven’t got the new Immolation yet for some bizarre reason.

As for the second half… I’ll wait and see what comes up.

    • yetzer hara

the new circle of dead children is nothing short of amazing.

i have to agree… i used to be fans of both but now its just rehashed shit…

  • Ziltoid

No Tryptikon? Overkill? Iscaroth? Immolation? Heathen? Alcest? Attack Attack!?

Well, at least yo got Ludicra and Ihsahn.

Still, this has been a dull year.

    • Ziltoid

Oh yeah, major lulz at Mutiny Within. Just about the archetype of made-to-sell commercial pop metal.

      • Dysenteric

Metal-flavoured pop would be a better term. Periphery and Bullet go under this as well.

        • Ziltoid

          Haha, true.

        • http://myspace.com/theswampzombiecult Blake

          Periphery? Pop? Really, dude?… wow.

          • SonOF

            ^ what he said.

          • Dysenteric

            Aye, really… dude.

          • FongChung

Periphery is like Linkin Park meets Fear Factory. It’s nothing original.

    • Alex_P

Does Heathen count? It came out last year in Japan.

Also, Immolation’s new record is a bit overrated. It’s good, but hardly great (subjective judgment).

I would agree about the year being mostly dull. I kind of like that, though, because it gives me time to digest all the great ’09 stuff I haven’t yet gotten to.

      • Ziltoid

Only Amuhrika matters!!! Are you a commie? Heathen’s new record was released in 2010 because only Amuhrika matters!

I do hate it, though, when albums are released late one year in one country and early the next year in another.

To be fair to 2010, I haven’t been paying too much attention to anything. Just the aforementioned bands. My current plan is to go through a bunch of older death metal albums (mostly Finnish and Swedish), and I’m spending most of my listening time on those

        • Alex_P

For a second, I thought Amuhrika was some awesome progressive death metal band I hadn’t yet heard. I read it like it was an Arab word.

Can you play an instrument? I can sort of play keyboard, and I want to learn bass. We should start Amuhrika.

Anyways, we all know 2010 will get very awesome very quickly. Atheist, Manilla Road, possibly the new Maiden, (does not apply to you) the Ocean, (dnaty) Decrepit Birth, (possibly dnaty) Protest the Hero and others make me very optimistic.

(The dnaty tag basically is here to indicate that we really don’t need to start an internet argument over them. They are in product testing.)

          • Ziltoid

I used to play piano, but I had to give that up once I had to commit more time to school. I still dink around in Garageband for fun on occasion, though it’s just for fun and in no way serious. But if we start a band, we must have lyrics that promote the American fringe right movement! Nothing is more brutal than the fringe right…

But Atheist alone has me excited for 2010. As long as they don’t ruin their legacy and end up like Gnostic musically, I’ll at least be happy that they’ll have new material. I’m indifferent towards PtH and we know what to expect from Maiden by now. Also, new Kamelot and Blind Guardian will likely be similar to previous albums.

          • Alex_P

Decapitated heads of people who aren’t like us.

    METAL… FUCK YEAH!

  • Dysenteric

      • FongChung

Really? REALLY^ They’re MUCH better hip hop records coming out this year. Yet you put that pop hop garbage in your list?

        • SonOF

“Recovery” is the best hip-hop album to come out in five years, and I am talking about mainstream, underground, etc.

I really don’t listen to much “commercial” hip-hop, but the lyricism, storytelling, and wordplay on this album is some of the best I have heard in years. He can hang (in fact is better than) than the backpackers know specifically for their lyricism, AND can write a catchy song.

Please list some quality hip-hop albums, I’m always looking for good stuff. I dig Jay Electronica, Mr. Lif, Dead Prez, Talib, Immortal Technique, Wu, RA the Rugged Man, AOTP, Jedi Mind

In fact, I should have added: Reflections Eternal – Revolutions Per Minute

          to the list.

          • SonOF

            ^^^ err REFLECTIONAL ETERNAL

damn MS and their lack of editing option

      • SonOF

        I also recommend:

        Eminem – Recovery

    • SonOF

      I also totally forgot

      The Ocean – Heliocentric

      and

Fear Factory – Mechanize (always have a soft spot for this band)

2010, the year of the ‘meh’tal. Big albums that I’ve really looked forward to haven’t done much for me…

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dan-Burton/784250631 Dan Burton

Oh, and Daughters ‘S/T’ – Thats definitely a contender for my record of the year.

      • Calculus

I was actually scrolling through the comments to see if anyone mentioned it. Daughters S/T is my ROTY hands down.

Lots of great records out so far this year, but I’d say my favorite is the new Yakuza album

I’m a fan of the Deftones, but I feel like Diamond Eyes was kinda weak. Maybe its just me, but I’d prefer to stick with their older stuff.

FInntroll’s ‘Nifelvind’, High on Fire’s ‘Snakes for the Divine’, and Overikill’s ‘Ironbound’ are all missing for some reason

  • H3RET1K
