POLL: A METALSUCKS TEXT MESSAGE LIST?

Friday, June 25th, 2010 at 2:00pm by

A company recently approached us with the idea of creating a mobile list that would allow us to send SMS (text message) updates to any of our readers who sign up. We wouldn’t send out updates every time we post a new article (’cause that would be ridiculous), but only when there’s something new or exclusive like an interview or track premiere.

Discussing it internally, we really have no idea whether this is a service you guys would be interested in or not. It could be a great way to keep readers apprised if important updates, but it could also feel like spam (keeping in mind, of course, that’d you’d have to sign up).

So, rather than speculate, we figured we’d just ask you guys. Whaddayathink? As always, vote in the poll widget below, then elaborate in the comments.

i voted no, but i’d be much more interested in a service where i could tailor my updates based on, for example, the tags in a post. So in my profile I could setup to only receive alerts based on “Daath,” “Mastodon” and “Kristen Randall’s boobs.”

Stuff like that would be sweet.

      This is a great idea.

Yes, now we’re talking! This would be excellent. Preferably without requiring a login, as I absolutely hate having to create accounts for sites to comment and interact with it. It could just be cookie-based, so per computer (or per browser/profile) I could specify which articles I want to see.

Just started using your mobile version of the site, and I’m quite impressed.

  • Jacob

I voted no, but only because i check the site regularly and have it RSSed too, so it would be overkill.

    • Erik

      same here

      • http://raiseyerfists.wordpress.com raiseyerfists

Yeah same, no need for another notification.

  • Cody

I dont need it as i check every hour or so anyway

i mostly voted no because i don’t have unlimited. if i did, i’d probably be down for it.

  • SP420

No. Just work on a new mobile version of the site.

    • SP420

Or a fucking Android widget. Yeah. No wait, I’ll work on that.

        You go girl !

I vote both yes and no.

Yes because I am a MetalSucks fanboy, and I would love to be updated during work when I can’t be near my computer. But if it were a paid subscription service I’m not interested because I’m a cheap ass with my money and need to save it for beer.

I think a podcast would be more sufficient though (if there already is one, I don’t know).

Best case scenario though, I vote for complete mobile APP or something.

  • Spanky

A metalsucks app would be way more awesome

yea, i would download that shit to my itouch if you had an app, but i gets on my nerves having people text and call me as it is, having a machine to add to that shit would bother the fuck out of me.

  • vagoo

fuckin’ hipsters and their “apps” and “iPhones” and “iTouches”

    I’LL TOUCH YOU!!!!

    • http://www.myspace.com/palehorseofhell lord assenfroth

      i like that idea ;)

  • Caspar Colderson

I voted no bacause I, as some mentioned above, also check the site every hour or so.

But anyways, what would the cost be? And even if it’s free the U.S., what about, say, Europe? Or basically anywhere outside the U.S.

  • Hot Donut

Well, I have text messaging completely disabled on my phone, so that’s an obvious no from me.

Even for people who do have text messaging on their phones, this service seems like a waste of effort. First of all, RSS is sufficient for most people. Second of all, even if there is a demand for a notification service, why not set up an e-mail notification service rather than SMS? If people want it delivered to their phone, most carriers have an e-mail address that will forward to SMS. Like for AT&T I believe it’s 5551234567@txt.att.net.

I voted yes but that relies on it being available over here in the UK?

  • Chimp 0 Neg

I hassle you guys for news, not the other way round.

    • sceeeeewooooop

      ain’t that the truth

  • Genial Gentile

I spend enough of my work day on this site as is guys…but thanks anyways.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Devon-Czekaj/550092101 Devon Czekaj

It’ll make it seem like I have friends…so sure!

  • matty2fatty

innovative idea, but I check the site everyday so I’m good

  • BruisedMetal

Id say N/A because I dont own a cell phone and I check this site everyday anyway

  • Adam

I read the site regularly (pretty much daily unless for some reason I can’t or forget) and I can’t read emails or the website on my current phone so it’s kinda unnecessary but yeah like timmah said, if I could get messages when specific things get posted about, that’d be alright.

  • kiilling on adrenaline

I would decline because, I like to read this site on my own time and if I had it text at work it would ruin the suprise when i got home everyday

  • Alex_P

This site is my primary procrasturbation tool. I drain it of information whenever I have something to do.

  • kickoutthejamsman

voted no cause i check this site basically everyday.

  • Mitch K

it would be one of those things id sign up for and then never really pay attention to again after the first 2 weeks. plus im here alot anyways!

    • BigJoe

      Agreed!!

  • mano

people who said ‘no’ don’t have unlimited texts.

  • http://evilsausage.livejournal.com/ Evil

I would rather subscribe via email then text OR RSS. Offer email subscriptions (especially if I can choose which bands I want to read about) and I’ll be all over that.
