KORN PLAY FOR THE LARGEST AUDIENCE THEY DESERVE

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010 at 2:30pm by

So let me see if I have this straight: Korn paid what I assume was a large sum of money to have a big crop circle made so that they could play a ninety minute concert to no fans whatsoever so that they could make a video of said fanless gig and release it on the internet for free. Wow. That’s kind of amazing. It’s an almost complete waste of resources, AND a terrific promotional tool. And I mean both of those statements sincerely.

Of course people are gonna talk about this. But it is, in pretty much every way imaginable, an insanely poor use of time and effort. I mean, I didn’t even watch the entire thing – I looked at about a minute of them playing the opening track, and then I skipped ahead to see if maybe they let some fans come by later, and then I stopped again when I saw a pretty sunset and thought “Wow, that’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen in a Korn video,” and then I fast forwarded again, and now I’m writing this.

And this must have cost a fortune, right? I’d be really curious to know if it any way translates to increased album or ticket sales for Korn. Seriously. I wanna know if this incredibly bizarre and effort-filled PR stunt paid off.

I’m pretty sure it should be “AN insanely poor use of time”

HAHAHAHAH YOU FAIL AT KNOWING THINGS ON THE INTERNET!!!! BAHAHAHA

    oh wait…

    • themasses

      Poll: Wasting time and money:
      Metal ?
      Nu – Metal ?

  • FongChung

This band shouldn’t be playing to any audiences period. They are fucking horrible.

  • http://metalinjection.net RobInjection

I too thought why waste all this money – but this was actually shot for a special on HDNet (so I’m sure they forked over some dollars to help produce this)

Also, does anybody even get HDNet?

    • gauche

i think i might but it could be just a rash.

      • Caspar Colderson

I genuinely laughed out loud at this comment. You made my day, stranger on the internet.

    • FongChung

Lol you would totally interview this band ten years ago. Don’t lie Rob it’s okay. Still enjoy Metal Injection though :)

      • http://metalinjection.net RobInjection

Who’s to say we won’t interview them at Mayhem Fest? We don’t discriminate!

        • MammothCommander

          unless it’s Psyopus ;)

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Devon-Czekaj/550092101 Devon Czekaj

You can wear your Staind shirt while you interview them.

    • MammothCommander

      what is HDNet?

also I have a feeling this will be discussed on the livecast tomorrow with hilarious commentary.

      • ZackP

HDNet is an awesome channel that shows High Definition concerts, uncut. I got 2 Steve Vai shows and an Eric Johnson gig on DVR. I thank Verizon Fios forever for finally giving Time Warner competition in my area.

    • ferocious_fetus

I caught some of this last night on HDNet…I’ve seen Judas Priest and Megadeth concerts on the same channel too. I watched the opening but the first track (a new one?) was horrible. I kept flipping it back whenever Law & Order SVU went to commercial.

aside from Korn being a joke….its pretty fucked up that make the other guitar player stand behind the amps in the shadows like that.

      • Johnny

that other guitarist is shane gibson and hes a fucking shred god.

must be makin good $$ to play sideman to korn.

    • chris

This was obviously paid for by Monster energy drinks. They had a plug right at the beginning of the video. I don’t like Korn, but I think I would choose this over 99% of the Sumeriancore bands.

thank you rob, you’re prolly the only smart person that posted on this page

ive never seen a band do this, and its an incredible concept

so fuck all the haters, cuz i dont see asking alexandria or fucking whitechapel doing something like this, CUZ THEY ARNT KORN

  • http://schenkeltown.blogspot.com SchenkelTown

considering how much you hate korn, you sure do post a lot of news about them.

go jerk off to some iwrestledabearonce

  • DemonicLemming

Shitty band makes shitty music video.

Can we get some more Marta boobs in a bikini?

    • http://Ihopeno canea

      Yes please.

  • FongChung

Who cares how much money these cock goblins waste. The fact they are still coked up, and now getting into their 40′s amuses me. I didn’t now Nu Metal/Rap Rock people were nearly 40. I thought they would be dead from the all Meth, and cocaine they used to do back in the 90′s. It’s pretty hilarious how one awful band can go further down the drain then they already have. Throw in Limp Jizkit, Kid Cock, and numerous others.

  • GoingDeaf?

It’s just like Pink Floyd, “Live at Pompeii”, only terrible.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Devon-Czekaj/550092101 Devon Czekaj

      This.

    • http://infinitybasement.tumblr.com Jon

I was just thinking the exact same thing.

      • dongreyface

That was my first thought as well.

    • dokurochan2

      yup

  • http://metalmykee.blogspot.com Metal Mykee

    in a cornfield!! GET IT??

oh how clever and witty those men are!

(also, KoRn is pretty much the only band in all existence that i will say i ‘HATE’)

    • OMFG

Um…. thats not a corn field. Fail.

      • Rik

“Corn is a term for some cereal crops or the corresponding grain, such as:

        * Maize (corn commonly refers to this grain in the US and Canada)
        * Wheat
        * Barley”

This looks like wheat to me, so yes, it is corn. Fail.

        • Fred Durst

I love internet logic , this guy just proved corn=wheat

GIVE THIS GUY THE NOEBLE PRIZE

          • CrusherDestroyer

            Funny post.

  • Honeynutzz

Recording a full set and putting it on the internet cool idea.

Not having any fans there to see the performance?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

    • GoingDeaf?

Exactly….live performance footage without an audience is about as lame as it gets.

      • Sickboy666

I don’t really get the complaint. Just think about it as an open rehearsal.

        • Rik

Having fans would completely ruin the atmosphere they’ve got here, not to mention ruin the whole crop circle thing. It would just be a regular gig. I like that they’ve done something different.

  • stan47islav

apparently Monster Energy paid for some of it…

  • DidgeryDo

It’s our fault Axl keeps posting about Korn. We left like 5 million comments on the listening party thread so now he’s going to mention them whenever he can to jack up site activity.

For the record. They suck and I’m tired of talking about how much they suck.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ian-Pravata/622147016 Ian Pravata

Man that is so strange that there is nobody there.

  • WV

is that even a live audio feed? lame.

    • chris

I was thinking the same thing. I’m going to say, NO, to that one.

      • Rik

Seriously? Sounds live to me… it’s blatantly not the album tracks if that’s what you’re suggesting. And recording the whole thing in advance and then miming along to it would actually probably be more difficult and not worth the time or effort.

  • Cryzthormagnusian

It’s paying off some because you are writing about it.

  • Brian

I am confused. When i went to Hot Topic to get my new Korn shirt, I also got my tickets to the Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival. But now my favorite band has a can of Monster in the beginning?

What does this mean? how am I suppose to get AMPED for the show…with rockstar or monster?

    • Johnny Death

If going to see your favorite band isnt enough to amp you, try better music.

  • ITTOA666

Shane Gibson deserves so much better.

    • Type-O-Positive

he’s gotta pay the bills somehow. at least being a sideman he keeps some shred of credibility. kinda like saying don’t blame me I just work here.

  • Grymmbear

Now, if it were John Bush doing this, it would be cool, right?

And no, I don’t like Korn. At all.

    • http://schenkeltown.blogspot.com SchenkelTown

      +1

If it were any band they liked, the people on this site would be talking about what a great idea it is

      • wha?

+1 If this were Trent Reznor, it would be seen as groundbreaking and a great gift for the fans, and he would be praised (again) for how cool he is.

  • http://brutaljay.blogspot.com Brutal Jay

I actually enjoyed watching this. And, I know saying this as probably the only fan of Korn on MetalSucks is high treason. But, what can I say? It’s nostalgic.

Also, if you bothered to watch it you would’ve gotten to see Jon Davis start crying and storm off stage during “Wasting My Time” say “I hate this fucking song” before throwing the mic down about an hour in.

    • Xenogia

Haha, he’s 40 and still doing this shit. Does he still have bad dreams about his daddy? Dear god.

  • http://deleted Ken

    sad

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Christian-Voltaggio/1409575074 Christian Voltaggio

This is worse than Bret Michael’s publicity stunts lolz

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Vanderven/502827008 Mike Vanderven

i honestly dont understand why everyones complaining

why?! cuz you’re all butthurt that you wernt there for this? cuz you had no idea it was going on? THIS IS BY FAR THE COOLEST THING IVE EVER SEEN A BAND DO

    you’re all fucking retards

  • bucketochicken

I bet Zak Bagans thinks this is totally badass.

  • http://NotD89Rix@yahoo.com Pahkmycah

So….wait, Metalsucks get overjoyed when Trent Reznor spends his time working on shit to release free to the fans, but when Korn does the same you say it’s a stupid idea and waste of time/money?

Don’t let your hate for a band make you look like a complete moron.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/ichard-Kulba/514264422 Яichard Kulba

you’re a moron buddy. If you hate them soo much. Why promote it? Just by you doing this is just helping them out don’t you know that? For a guy who knows very educated words, you’re not very good in the thinking department are you? Obviously. Asides from that. This is Amazing

  • DustintheWind

I can’t help but wonder what Korn’s rep would be like if they would have broken up after Life is Peachy or Follow The Leader. Its easy to forget how influential Korn was. Their first album was really original and Jon Davis is a talented vocalist. They got a bad rap in my area because of all the fat girls in Korn t-shirts….and no one wants to be associated with that.

  • Jizzmaster3000

If Mastodon did this I would of jizzed, but seeing it’s how it’s Korn playing their new stuff? meh…

    • CrusherDestroyer

      1

  • the devil’s advocate

We did something like this back in the ’90s in our guitarist’s driveway. A few people walking down the street stopped to watch, then the cops showed up to warn us about performing in public without a permit. At the risk of sounding arrogant, that show was more metal than this.

  • Milkman

that must be THE most pretentions drumkit i have ever seen.

  • ChildrenWhomStickCrayonsUpTheirAnus

you guys are always jockin this band

every time they put something out, youre all over it

    bad publicity is still publicity

  • NuMallCore Pwns YoMama!

Can they technically call this “The Encounter” if nobody was there? They didn’t encounter anyone but a camera crew.

  • Sheck

I honestly can’t see myself playing a concert to no one in a field of crops and not feeling like an asshole, no matter how famous I was.
