ULTRAGEISTING THEIR WAY TO THE TOP

I like it when new bands draw influences from various odd places across the metal spectrum and combine them into something that works just right, despite the seemingly cobbled together musical blueprint. In the case of Lawnguyland, NY’s Ultrageist, these exceptionally talented musicians draw from bands as all over the map as Protest the Hero, Horse the Band and The Red Chord and end up with an amalgam of progressive metal and hardcore, at times crushing and at times jazzy, with hints of electronica scattered throughout. If the next generation of metal bands is as good as finding new, creative ways to write metal songs as Ultrageist, the kids are gonna be alright.

I’ve yet to see these guys play live, but I’ve got a feeling they bring a great show. We’ll let you know next time they leave Vinnie Boombatz and his hair-gel Guido brigade behind and venture into the big city. Check ‘em out on MySpace.

hmm sounds like a bunch of crap to me. trying to mix as many genres of music as they can.

  • Michael

I’ll disagree with that and say it sounds quite enjoyable. ‘Course I love genre mixing…meh, to each they’re own.

  • Genial Gentile

Sounds like every other cockamamie bullshit kitchensink-core band you rep, Neilstein.

I had to sit through these guys when they opened for dark tranquillity here on long island and lemme tell you, their live show was NOT so hot.

      • Nemesis

No, I agree with Bret…though i think a lot of it was that they did NOT fit into the bill that night at all.

They’re not bad, but they’re not doing anything Sky Eats Airplane doesn’t do better.

LMFAO…Oh…*whoops* That’s an actual band. My bad.

    • rrrrrrrrr’s

  • sYgnal

Yea… they sound pretty interesting. I would love to hear a little more lead work considering they have two guitars. And,no, not that twangy, two-string Metal-Core shit either. I’m not a fan of the hardcore growls either..BUT, Still, I think they sound pretty good. Better than that Aliases shit. Thanks for the heads-up.

I downloaded their first full-length when they were known as Anautopsy, and they were a helluva lot different from this. They had a lot more of a core influence then. This is a lot more experimental. Consider me a fan.

  • Vlygar

What? Metal dudes from lawnguyland? Where the hell are they hiding out? I don’t see anyone else here really into Metal. It’s all emo/rap/fist pumpers here.

Their music is alright but I’ve found better background music to enjoy. I can’t really ostracize anyone if they like it though.

  • Dr. Chim Richalds

Fuckin’ A, this recommendation is melting my fuckin nutsack off!

    This is fucking abysmal.

I saw them a couple months ago at the crazy donkey. Don’t remember what show they were opening for, but I admit I was intrigued at first. The vocalists use of effect pedals to mess with the vocals was kind of cool, though a bit unrestrained, and when they started doing the everything-core thing, a la iwrestledabearonce and attack attack, I lost interest. They’re definitely very talented on their instruments, but I’m not a fan. I think bands like Carnival in Coal and Crotchduster (yeah, that’s right) did the “little-of-everything” brand of metal better.

“draw from bands as all over the map as Protest the Hero, Horse the Band and The Red Chord”

Is that supposed to be diverse? A bunch of -core bands with varying amounts of widdle?
