WHAT DO WE THINK OF WITHIN THE RUINS?

within the ruins

Here’s a band we get a lot of emails about but haven’t covered much to date: Massachusetts technical melodic death metallers Within the Ruins. Since their new album The Invasion drops on August 31st and they’ve already released two new songs from it on their MySpace page, now’s as good a time as any to give these guys some e-ink.

My take: Within the Ruins are a solid band with decent musical and songwriting chops. They kinda remind me of what The Black Dahlia Murder might sound like if they were aligned more closely with the tech-death scene; they’re technical but not overly so (no “weedily weedily”), and there’s plenty of Swedish-style melody working it’s way into the fabric of every concise song. That said, I’m not sure what separates this band from other similar ones (maybe I just need to listen more) and they occasionally veer too close to deathcore via the employment of tri-tone breakdowns… in other words there’s a whole lot of Triple A riffs. But there are plenty of sweet riffs too.

So what do you guys think of this band? After all, I’m just some lowly blogger / pseudo-journalist and you’re the consumer. Take a listen here then come back and comment to let us know.

The guys that is second from left definitely doesn’t fit.

Kind of a “lolwut” situation there.

He looks exactly like the bassist of Black Dahlia Murder. wat.

  • Metal Fuckin’ Dave

EVERYTHING IS STARTING TO SOUND THE SAME. I feel like a shitty guitar player listening to metal these days. Good but generic I guess is my assessment.

  • Honeynutzz

    Stop with these bands.

All these bands try to mix sooooooooooooooooooooooo much shit together it becomes to convoluted and instead of sounding like a band with unique voice we get Conducting Within the Ruin of Osiris. Melodic/tect/death/core band number 1242526454352.

Some of this shit I like but there is just to much to keep track of it all gets boring and I just end up listening to real music.

  • Comstock

I can tell that I’ll dislike this band just by looking at the picture.

  • ZackP

I found them about a year ago, and although I liked them for a month, they really don’t have any lasting impact on me. Their guitar tones are way too overdriven (please, leave the Engl amps to djent bands), and everything sounds way too tight. I’m all for bands making tight-sounding records, but WTR sound like they were built in a computer lab. Too bad too, they’re good musicians, just terrible songwriters.

  • ITTOA666

    Better than most deathcore bands.

  • Alex

Woah! Metal elitists bitching about a band with more than one influence! Big fuckin’ surprise!

These guys are fantastic song writers, musicians, and showman. This new album sounds even fuller and better than the previous. An incredible band.

    blech

I saw this band on their tour with Attilla (my friend’s band was opening, and we left before Attilla came on) I remember liking this band the most, but at this point, I don’t remember their performance at all, so I guess they weren’t too memorable.

  • Vinsanity

pretty decent, ill give their new album a try.

    Putting the “do” in douche.

The gauges in the ear are quite possibly the shittiest trend of all time.
When all those douche bags are old you will be able to tell exactly how old they are by their trendy 90′s ear holes.

I won’t listen to them just because they look like fuck sticks. 9/10 times when they look like douche bags the music is pure shit.

    • jtquake

Please don’t “judge a book by it’s cover.”

I think your estimate of 9/10 is a bit exaggerated.

  • Datrick

within the ruins is sweet. i’ll admit tech/death/scene/whatever bands are a dime a dozen, but WTR isn’t one of those bands. they have a decent amount of interesting riffs throughout their catalog, especially in the new song “invade” (2:53, 3:38). i can understand if people dislike their sound, but disliking them because they look silly is kinda hypocritical. they could sound completely different and they’d still get bashed for looking like hipsters, or wearing corpse paint, or looking “gangster,” or looking like pussy nerds. image doesn’t concern me. i like metal. all of it.

    • Brownsound

^ This guy is right. Despite their look and thier shitty victory records scene promos, these dudes can fucking rip and have a ton of creative riffs. Light a bowl and listen to their most played songs from their last album. It’s one of those bands that takes a few listens

  • OLINVILLE

    Not Much.

I’m actually good friends with the lead singer from Within the Ruins. I actually think they have some really good music and are really talented. More than I can say about most bands these days.

  • jtquake

Loved “Creature” and I’m eagerly awaiting the new album. The crunchy, staccato riffs are completely unique and awesome imho.

…although I’m very un-stoked about new vocalist, he is super-monotone to say the least…

  • RandomGuitarist

“Creature” was great. These guys have their own sound and it kills any Metalcore out there.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-R-Wilson/502405051 Michael R. Wilson

This band is simply awesome. Personally, I find them to be a completely refreshing take on modern metal/metalcore/hardcore/deathcore sound. I bought “Creature” back when it was first released and still listen to it weekly to this day.

  • drummingchode

great band the drums and guitar are amazing creature was an incredible album and invasion is going to be even better give this band a chance and you will like them

  • ChildrenWhomStickCrayonsUpTheirAnus

whats gonna happen when people with those bigass ears holes turn 50?

these kinda bands are all commercialized,so its not like theyre part of some sub-culture like crust punk, where you can be 50 and a weirdo and still be around weirdos and do your shit

these bands are just too generic, its like butt rock all over again

  • 7thdimension

yep. these guys own. you know what i think makes a good band? two things, simple. 1) you always know when its THAT BAND when their song comes on. 2) anytime you hear a song from said band, you start moving your head and dont hit next. think about it…Deftones…Tool…Megadeth.,etc. all bands that have that factor. no comparisons, just examples. i think these guys got both that on lock

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Gingras/691170904 Michael Gingras

    sick

    they’re from RI……

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Taylor-James-Hamilton/1178820034 Taylor James Hamilton

Their first album was just one big song to me. This next one has a little different sound, but I have a feeling like it’s going to be the same ol’ same ol’ for them.

  • Danexmurder

I saw these guys with Knights of the Abyss a year or so ago, and was impressed by both bands. KOTA is another band you guys haven’t really covered and Shades was a beast of an album.

    • Phil

Both these bands were at the studio i was at, DARK CITY/ DREADCORE STUDIOS. DETROIT MICHIGAN
KOTA are my homies we partied hard and had a blast

their new album will be out aug 17th

KNIGHTS OF THE ABYSS IS A VERY GOOD BAND!

  • Phil

I Met the Dudes in the studio DREADCORE STUDIOS MI, When my band was there they are cool dudes their music is pretty good

  • cgrind

    WTR is pretty much amazing

  • Jamie

They are a great mix between a few sub-genres of metal. Their first album killed (creatures) and I can’t wait till their next album.

  • Carson W

Please, stop judging bands by the way they look. It just encourages more people to be ignorant.
Now, I’d say that WTR is a group of really talented musicians, and they’re pretty good at writing, but their only downfall is that most of their songs sound really similar. Thy being said, it all sounds pretty damn good, so I wont complain haha. I love creature, and I love the two new songs, pretty sick band
