BLEEDER’S DIGEST: QUICKIE REVIEWS OF THE ACACIA STRAIN AND I DECLARE WAR

Friday, August 6th, 2010 at 2:40pm by

The Acacia Strain, Wormwood
The New England band’s latest collection of heartfelt ballads to punch your girlfriend in the face to, Wormwood reiterates The Acacia Strain’s deathcore dominance. Showcasing a truly noticeable progression in the group’s sound, these twelve tracks cover such edgy topics as religious cults (“Jonestown”), serial killers (“Ramirez”), and domestic terrorism (“Unabomber”), all set to a barbaric barrage of brutal breakdowns. “Nightman,” a surprisingly faithful cover from the classic It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia musical episode “The Nightman Cometh,” displays an intentional humor so rarely present in this scene that so frequently takes itself far too seriously. By keeping his lyrics intelligible and insightful on cuts like “BTM FDR,” vocalist Vincent Bennett excels where so many frontmen in deathcore fail:

We are the atomsmashers
We do what can’t be done
You are the baby killers
We will explode the sun

Sure, they’re no Emmure, but they’re still pretty great.

I Declare War, Malevolence
Though hardly the only culprits, this Seattle act make precisely the sort of deathcore that sets the embattled subgenre up for further harsh criticism from the rest of the metal scene. Groups like Job For A Cowboy and Suicide Silence have already helped to provide the general template for the current sound, and it’s really up to newer bands such as I Declare War to build on that foundation and push the sound forward. Unfortunately, there’s not even a glint of innovation evident throughout the roughly forty-minutes that comprises Malevolence. Maybe it’s a tad bit unfair to expect more from the band’s Artery Recordings debut, but with so many formulaic deathcore groups out there aping the more successful players, the burden is on I Declare War to distinguish themselves. Brutal as cuts like “Putrification Of The Population” and “New Age Holocaust” may be, there’s just not enough substance to recall after the record ends, and highlights are essentially nonexistent when every track sounds so much like the preceding one. Ultimately, Malevolence is just a caustic blur of bland triggered drums, predictable breakdowns, and dull death metal vocalizations.

Who is responsible for these reviews? Did you even listen to the album, or just look at the back cover? You may have gotten away with this in 4th grade doing book reports, but c’mon… my mother could have given a better dissertation on this record than you did. You make Lambgoat.com look intelligent. Way to go.

    • Blake B.

agreed…emmure is good and heavy…but no acacia strain

  • Cladgemeister

Wait, did this guy just give props to Emmure?

You guys don’t get sarcasm much, do you.

    • Cladgemeister

Well he has said he likes Emmure in the past. Also I’m British, sarcasms pretty much our language.

    • Befriender

He tries to like Emmure because everyone else hates them. It’s not sarcasm, and it’s not genuine. Gary Suarez is a fucking poseur and he knows it.

  • Driven9

well done Gary. i agree with you once again (this seems to be happening a lot these days… hmmm?)

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jose-Rodriguez-III/1435762004 Jose Rodriguez III

comparing Emmure to the Acacia Strain is like comparing Oasis to the Beatles.

  • Genial Gentile

lol… don’t think this will ever get old.

  • Bucknasty McNasty

Emmure are a fucking joke. wait.. didnt the singer from Emmure say he was really into Limp Bizkit? wtf.

Agreed – Wormwood is a beast of an album, Ramirez is probably one of the most dynamic tunes on that album I think.

    PS – fuck Emmure.

  • NateD

Wow, I have to say I liked Continent much better than this, the latest, but guess I try one more time…

    • BumpItCharlie

I agree. Continent is awesome! Wormwood is good, but it just doesn’t tickle my nuggets as much.

  • Franco

I’ve been listening to Wormwood constantly since it came out, fucking awesome.

  • Matt

If you guys haven’t figured out Gary puts lines like “Sure, they’re no Emmure, but they’re still pretty great.” that get you to go ape shit crazy you might be retarded.

  • Jake

Guys, Gary did this review. That’s why it sucks.

    • Derp

I can’t stand this guy, sarcasm or not.

  • Chris

I can’t believe you just called The Acacia Strain “deathcore” jesus fucking christ.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/James-Koch/100000785018253 James Koch

They are deathcore, you scene kiddie.

    • Matt

It IS deathcore. What the fuck do you think it is?

      • Chris

metal or metalcore. its clearly got hardcore elements, two-step riffs, breakdowns, and clearly got some metal grit. where do you hear ANY element of DEATH METAL in their music? do you hear any blastbeats or any other element traditional of death metal? no. deathcore = the fusion of traditional death metal elements (ie; blastbeats, tremolo picking, etc.) with metalcore style breakdowns. scene kiddie? you’re the one who looks like an ignorant mallcore douchetard, you’re on a metal website and you can’t even grasp the concept of what defines something as “death” metal or “death”core. not all heavy music w/ breakdowns = deathcore.

Haha I couldn’t even tell that whole TAS review was sarcastic until I read the comments. Seriously, I thought I was about to quit reading metalsucks for good.

I honestly think the review is legit though.
It’s hard to tell, and you should see what MetalSucks gave Oceano…

  • DemonicLemming

Gary, your reviews are the highlight of my week. I put Proust aside to read your work…it’s simply amazing. The slavish attention to detail, the narcotic evocation your use of sublimely poetic adjectives brings, the innocent sincerity of your prose in an otherwise cynical, hard-edged world just brings tears to my eyes by the time I’m finished reading. My musical collection is only comprised of albums you recommended, because after the first time I listened to Oceano, I realised that your musical taste is so highly refined and classy, none of the low-brow, untalented music I had previously enjoyed could be placed on the same hard drive as the quality work of bands you praise.

It’s funny that these albums are equally boring, and one got 4 stars and one got 1.5. I have liked TAS in the past, but this album has absolutely nothing memorable on it.

  • mr. poops

“Nightman,” a surprisingly faithful cover from the classic It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia musical episode “The Nightman Cometh,”

Kinda disappointed. I guess they took the name from Always Sunny but that’s it. I was hoping it would be an actual cover because that would be awesome. I wonder if Gary even listened to this song when he made the review.

    • ZackP

I said the exact same thing. I went back to listen to it again thinking I missed something…..I have no clue what the fuck that moron was talking about. Just your shitty, run of the mill, post-Dead Walk Acacia Strain.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Bryan-McDowell/509166325 Bryan McDowell

haven’t gotten the chance to listen to IDW’s new cd so i can’t comment, but i had them here last month with Molotov Solution and they are fucking bad ass live!

  • ant

I really thought this loser was being truthful when he said they did a rendition of “Nightman.” I’m super excited to find out it was a lie, because I’ve been working on my own rendition of it(its hard to find someone who can sing that high “AHH” with the speed we’re going to play it in and key it is in).

Fool me once Gary… Shame on you.

But onto their music. I’m not just going to trash on them like everyone simply because I don’t like their music. They’re probably the first “Deathcore” band I didn’t turn off after 2 measures into the song. In all seriousness, the song “Jonestown” is decent. But their songs just don’t seem to go ANYWHERE. They just play a heavy riff and stick with it. They turn one decent riff and stretch it into a 3 minute borefest. They really sound like a poorman’s Bury Your Dead(I say poor man because Bury Your Dead’s music is getting better and they write better songs than these guys) with a bunch of random noodling. They’re not the worst thing I’ve ever heard, but I don’t see what gets people so excited about these guys.

    • johnnyMKmk

I love the Acacia Strain. but i also love how sensible your comment was. I appreciate the thought put into it… also: Jonestown was nice but i liked the version with only Vincent singing it more than the one on Wormwood….(iTunes/vinyl version)

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Harrington-Neil-Sauer/677600672 Harrington Neil Sauer

    Wormwood is their best album.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mikey-Ck-Vanderven/502827008 Mikey Ck Vanderven

the album really comes out at you. stands out from the rest of the other albums.

acacia strain has got to be the best. who else got a bunch of black dudes to shoot a video?! id love to see a “behind the scenes: the making of” the skywalk video

  • Hoodrat

    haha “they’re no emmure”
The Respect Issue and Goodbye to the Gallows are 2 of the worst “deathcore” albums I’ve heard come from a bigger name.

Felony is the only decent one.
But comparing 3750, Continent, and Wormwood to Emmures 3. Jesus man, seriously?

    • Matt

      1. He was being sarcastic with the Emmure comment. Emmure has been ragged on constantly for copying Acacia Strain.

      2. You dislike Goodbye to the Gallows but liked Felony? Seriously? Felony was god awful.

      • johnnyMKmk

Why the fuck would he be sarcastic with the Emmure comment? There is absolutely no need for that… so hes a dumbass for that if the above is true.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Graham-OBrien/831660359 Graham O’Brien

We are the reason there is blood on the Ground.. ACACIA FTW!

Wormwood is a fucking disgrace to the Acacia Strain. They should have quit after The Dead Walk.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mikey-Ck-Vanderven/502827008 Mikey Ck Vanderven

      i can tell you’re a fan..

      • Ziltoid is a Pussy

        mega fan

  • DidgeryDo

OK so I allways wondered if Gary Suarez was just a fake identity one of the MS guys assumes to review something they hate with a great score to fuck with people and jack up site traffic.

This HAS to be tongue in cheeck though. “It aint no Emmure” was one clue but then when he said the lyrics were “intelligible and insightful and cited this:

    We are the atomsmashers
We do what can’t be done
    You are the baby killers
    We will explode the sun

HaHa right! Those lines are CRINGEWORTHY.

  • bigot

Lyrics on this album are horrible, although the vocals do sound good and the overall sound of the album is a lot bigger than there last album. Still i think this is the worst album they have made yet. Its almost like they are trying to be Djent in 4/4 which is pretty redundant . 5/10

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mikey-Ck-Vanderven/502827008 Mikey Ck Vanderven

ill be honest. when i first heard acacia strain, i loved it. i never heard anything like it when they dropped angry mod justice. it spread like wild fire after that.

some of their songs are dull, same old stuff, but their gems shine in between. they keep it hardcore in a sense, and thats where they get their street cred. its so sad how they get lumped into emmure so often just cuz of the fucking hats hahahahhahahahaha

tragic that emmure is now more popular, prolly only because so many people chose to make fun of them/promote them at the same time

  • jakeinyourbox

    breakdown core

  • Ziltoid is a Pussy

Anyone who reviews music is a failed musician. Anybody who comments like I just did is a failed musician. Enjoy anybody that makes your head bang. Congrats to all music, especially the hard shit. I still want to fight Ziltoid and his black trench coat.

If you read any of the articles he first wrote when he started at MetalSucks, I think it would be pretty apparent how seriously these reviews should be taken…

    • johnnyMKmk

      LOL

  • J Wood

Seriously? This album is probably of the most generic deathcore things i’ve ever heard. Just like all of The Acacia Strain’s other music they just try to be “slow and heavy”, the same boring cliche that people think makes band brutal. This album really shows a lack of skill in their writing and just like all of the other lyrics that they have ever had, its all about “i hate this, i hate that”. Get over your daddy issues, no one cares. Def. a weak album form a band that is semi-capable of making a good one.

And yes Emmure is still a ton worse than them.
