A METAL MAP OF AMERICA

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010 at 12:40pm by

So on Friday night I got this e-mail from a reader calling him or herself (but probably himself) Darkplace Assistant:

Just a random idea that came to mind. It’d be kind of useful and cool to have a map of where the METAL stores are in whatever state you go to since there are so little of them.

And I agreed with Darkplace. (I assume we’re on a first-name basis now, me and Darkplace.) So I promptly dispatched a MetalSucks Mansion Monkey to the Neilstein wing of the Mansion with a correspondence* suggesting that we pursue this project, with the help of you, our faithful readers, of course.

And, hey, guess what? Vince tipped me off to the fact that there’s already a website, wheresthemetal.com, that provides this very service. You just enter the zip code you’re in, and it tells you where the closest metal shop is. For example, here’s a screenshot from when I entered the zip code of the Mansion:

Pretty sweet, right?

Give the site a once over now, and if you know of any local shops that aren’t coming up already, let us know in the comments section — we’ll pass the info along to the right people to have the store added!

*We’d tried having pneumatic tubes installed, but the monkeys kept getting sucked into them while “playing” after work. Fucking monkeys.

it’s sad that all that’s left in philly is basically FYE, Best Buy, and Hot Topic. So sad.

    • tom

agreed, thats all there is in Rhode Island and mass. pretty weak

      • http://raiseyerfists.wordpress.com raiseyerfists

Uh Newbury Comics? There are about 20 of them, and while the metal selection isn’t outstanding, it’s very, very good at least compared to the big chains.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mark-Gavin/1396340262 Mark Gavin

Yep, Newbury Comics definitely has a better supply of metal than any other retailer I can think of. FYE even has a surprising amount of underground metal, although they charge like $100 for CD’s, so fuck them.

    • matt

what about the Relapse store in Philly? and in Middletown, NY there is Rock Fantasy

      • yetzer hara

i think the relapse store is closed.

    • Chainsaw Majini

Yeah, that’s the first thing i noticed. Sucks! I was curious to see all the independant places they would list. Although there is a place called Metal Haven here in the city that I never even knew about. I will have to check it out!

    • MetalJesus

Same thing going on in Houston. I was hoping for something a lil bit obscure that’s not an hour away. All we’ve got is shit tons of Best Buys and Hot topics, I don’t even think that there’s a FYE here…

      • yetzer hara

is sound exchange still open? i forgot what road it was on, but the number was 703 666 6666….

    • Slaughterhouse

The one shop that we have that is different is “The Heavy Metal Shop” in SLC

  • GoingDeaf?

I guess I’m spoiled out here in San Francisco…. independent record stores still live in the City, and the city government has basically outlawed chain stores of any kind in several neighborhoods. As someone who grew up in a smallish town, I can empathize with the pain of all you rural/suburbanites. Lack of access sucks….especially for shows.

    • http://www.heavyblogisheavy.com/ Alkahest

      THIS.

I get to see maybe a decent metal show once or twice a year if I’m lucky. I had to drive 4 hours to see Summer Slaughter.

Don’t knock FYE, they have a surprisingly good metal selection with some obscure bands I didn’t expect them to stock.

  • shut the fuck up donnie

fye has a decent metal selection, but expect to pay $24 for a cd if its not new. im amazed at the cd prices they try to get away with

  • BigBintheAV

They need to make a site that shows where you can get European metal, not just where I can buy BLS, Slipknot, or Cannibal Corpse!

  • shut the fuck up donnie

i find it funny when i go to hot topic and ask for a cd they look at me like im a retard.

you guys have the new skeletonwitch?

who? we got the new paramore. want a t-shirt?

    • BigBintheAV

Or maybe you would like a pair of pants with 300 zippers and no pockets? or an invader zim sticker?! lol I hate Hot Topic.

      • WhatDoesYourShirtSayHank

How about merch for the latest Youtube celebrity? Fuck that. Also, at my FYE pretty much every 1 disc CD is 10 bucks, and the used ones are, like 7, I don’t see what anyone means by over 20 bucks. And, there’s a couple of used CD stores here with pretty decent metal collections, too.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Andrew-Sterner/1335958279 Andrew Sterner

FYE, Hot Topic, and Best Buy. AWESOME RIGHT!?

Oh wait, there’s an independent store in Charlotte. I’ll have to take a trip down there one day and check it out.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Alan-Miller/710607007 Alan Miller

Yep best buy and hot topic galore around Az.
I think the only metal in there is Behemoth in best buy (good stuff)
and winds of plague in hot topic (meh)

and that is the list of available metal

  • nojacketrequired

what about metal BARS, this would be way more useful when traveling across country or wherever. I aready know that “hot topic” and “best buy” sell cd’s thank you very much. that whereisthemetal.com site is not very useful.

    • Chainsaw Majini

There is a place here in Chicago called Kuma’s Korner. It is fuckin awesome! Incredible food. And often after shows, some bands go there. I remember At the Gates was hangin out there a few years ago when they came through. But yes, good point!!

Metal bars are so scarce. Most of the time I just priority play a 15 minute BTBAM song on the jukebox at some random bar and a lot of people get pissed. Try it!

    • Vlygar

Yeah, I was expecting a few Metal venues to pop up also. Oh well. This site just makes me miss Slipped Disc even more now.

  • Cysquatch

FYE, Hot Topic, Best Buy. That pretty much sums up the metal community in Michigan.

    • morningrise

Rock of Ages in Garden City

  • dread

In my area they mention hot topic and best buy, and leave out the locally owned stores where one goes for music that does not suck. What a worthless website if you don’t think “Wow I want to go buy metal cd’s like Stonesour and Disturbed”.
    What a stupid website.

  • dread

Oh wait. That was the Salem area.In Eugene they at least mention CD world. Left out House of Records. The little pointer things are pointing about a half mile south of the real locations.
    This website still sucks.

  • Justin

Best Buy shouldn’t be included on the list of possible hits =(

  • Zakk

It’s all Hot Topic and Best Buy where I live in Southern California xD.

    • ryan d.

what part of southern california do you live cux theres this shop called Bionic Records in Cypress. they got some badass old school metal and underground punk and stuff.

      • Matthew Grant Anson

        Or Vacation Vinyl in Hollywood.

  • W8ulostme

Best Buy, FYE, and Hot Topic… typical. Also I got a suggestion for Metal Haven, but I already knew about that one… and it’s closing.

  • Chris

Seattle’s is crap. Skips over metal and underground destination shops for two dozen strip mall and big box stores. Add Dissonant Plane in Ballard and Zion’s Gate Records and Everyday Music on Capitol Hill. Also, tack on some venues/bars. Otherwise it’s just a killer website to hit if you’re searching for the closest generic cd/dvd retailer to your town’s Bed Bath & Beyond.

  • thelump

Too bad it only works for america, BLEH!

  • Reigning1

It appears that the metal is………..at Hot Topic. Just wonderful.

  • DirtyWarriorMan

The Metal Travel Guide is another awesome site. Tipped me off to a couple cool bars and record stores when I went to Europe a few years ago.

    http://www.metaltravelguide.com/

    • Vlygar

Actually, that helped me out a lot. Thanks man.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Alex-Johnston/1444803323 Alex Johnston

Sorry, there are no locations within 60 miles of your address. Wow. So that means I was just informed by a computer that I live in the middle of fucking nowhere.

  • David

    They’re all fuckin” Hot Topics!

Whatever…the best record store in the world is 5 minutes away from me.

Old Man Rant: you know, in my day we actually discovered and liked band like Zep and Aerosmith, and Priest because they were, you know, good bands. Not because Hot Topic or some clothing company wants to sell you an ‘identify’. It’s fuckin’ culture commody of the worst sort boyos.

  • Some Random Dude

“Sorry, there are no locations within 60 miles of your address.”

The only stores that sell music in my town are Bi Mart and Rays Grocery store. And it’s like Nora Jones or Bing Crosby or some other ghetto shit. Like %40 of the metal CD’s I own are from the trailer park and other tweaked out cheap places. the rest are from the internet.

  • Dubs

Fuck this, Richmond has got to have something other than FYE or Hot Topic. Plan 9 isn’t too bad, but my recent trip to NYC and seeing Generation and Hospital Prod. has basically sucked out whatever pride I had in that local store.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Will-Howe/1326305335 Will Howe

FYE, Hot Topic, FYE, Hot Topic, FYE, Hot Topic, FYE, Best Buy, Hot Topic, FYE, Hot Topic, FYE, Hot Topic, Best Buy, FYE, Hot Topic, FYE, Hot Topic….

WHAT? A DIFFERENT STORE? Oh, nevermind its like 3 hours away. “Centralfuge.” I’ll have to remember that if I’m ever in that area though.
