KATAKLYSM “PUSH THE VENOM”

I’m a hypocrite. I give bands like Linkin Park and Nickelback shit for basically writing the same album over and over and over again, but I don’t have a problem  (or at least have less of a problem) with bands like Slayer, Children of Bodom, and, well, Kataklysm doing more or less the same thing. I guess because I like songs like “Necrophobic” and “Perseverance” and “Prevail,” I have no problem hearing a seemingly endless string of versions of those tracks, whereas if I hear one more variation of “How You Remind Me,” I’m going to grab Sam Jackson and kill every motherfucker in the McDowell’s.

Which is a long way of saying that, yes, Kataklysm’s new album, Heaven’s Venom, sounds more or less like every other Kataklysm album, and I still think it rocks. It’s impossible to listen to this band and not headbang, y’know?

The band has released the first video from the album now, for the song “Push the Venom,” and I gotta say… it’s one of the better videos I’ve seen in awhile. It’s just absolutely EPIC. So props to director Ivan Colic.

Nuclear Blast has already released Heaven’s Venom in Europe; North America gets it August 24.

I like the music – can’t stand the vocals.

    • Driven9

agreed, horrible vocals. really cheesy vid too.

I LOVE Kataklysm, but i’m going to say this…

I think the problem often isn’t the vocals (I find Maurizio’s voice to be in line with say, Piotr from Vader, or even Dave from Morbid Angel – guttural yet understandable and distinctive, rather than the full-on death growl which becomes indistinguishable between vocalists after a certain point) but the DELIVERY of the vocal lines. In metal you often have to sacrifice clarity in your lyrics for a more generalised picture simply because there’s not enough space vocally for you to fit all the specific words and concepts in… now Maurizio often doesn’t really seem to understand/believe this and so forces.
        every.
        single.
        word.
        intoaspacewhereitdoesn’treallyfit.

        Thereby often ruining the effect.

Now I like this song so far, but it might take me a while to get used to the vocal delivery which I think could have been done more effectively.

COnversely people might jsut not like the vocals very much.

I really dig the vocals and delivery. It may be that I’m so sick of hearing “reet reet” vocals though.

“Hey, I started out mopping the floor just like you guys. But now… now I’m washing lettuce. Soon I’ll be on fries; then the grill. And pretty soon, I’ll make assistant manager, and that’s when the big bucks start rolling in.”

If you want Kataklysm that sounds different go back and listen to The Mystical Gate of Reincarnation and Sorcery albums.

When we give a band shit for putting out the same album repeatedly, it’s usually because the first album wasn’t very good.

If every time you went to a restaurant, you got the best steak you’d ever eaten, you’d be damn happy for it even if the flavor is pretty much the same each time. But if every time you went you got a shitty bologna sandwich, even if you were okay with the first one you’d start saying “OKAY I NEED SOMETHING DIFFERENT.”
