THIS IS FOR THE MANY ALL THAT REMAINS FANS

I haven’t enjoyed an All That Remains album since This Darkened Heart, and that was in 2004, which is like a millenia in blogger years. The problem, I think, is that I saw them live, and realized that Phil LaBonte can’t sing and the rest of the band apparently looks to 21st century Mick Mars as their model of how much to move on-stage. Once I know I’m never gonna be able to enjoy a band in concert, who gives a flying fuck about their records? Especially when their records sound like Overcome.

But ATR’s popularity seems to be ever-increasing, and I’m nothing if not a people pleaser, so here I present the cover for their forthcoming …For We Are Many. The art, by the very talented Travis Smith, makes almost no sense to me as a concept, because while there are “many” people on the cover, only three of them seem to be emitting light from their heads. So unless ATR are suggesting that they and/or their fans are faceless dim bulbs, it kinda seems like the release should be called …For We Are Few. But, hey, what do I know? I’m just a guy who enjoys the act of thinking.

All That Remains’ latest Adam Dutkiewicz-produced affair comes out October 12 on Prosthetic/Razor & Tie.

What’s worse is that, in the latest interview, Mr Labonte stated that he felt they had defined a specific All That Remains sound that people loved… so on the upcoming record they were incorporating a lot more Pantera-style southern groove AND some almost Meshuggah-esque parts…

Thereby pretty much jumping on several other bandwagons at once? Contradiction Phil!!! Defining your sound… by copying others??? Gah!

That is the ATR sound. Sound is defined by copying others. Originality, how the fuck does it work?

or it could be a reference to the demon Legion.

“And He (Jesus) asked him (the man), “What is thy name?” And he answered, saying, “My name is Legion: for we are many.”

OR it could be referring to anonymous with the faceless silhouettes. they also use “for we are many”.

The local metal band that started it all for me, the reason i listen to metal today. After being crushed by their last two albums and left thoroughly disappointed the three times i saw them live, I don’t know if I can even give this album a shot…

I used to really like these guys. The Fall of Ideals wasn’t on par with This Darkened Heart but it was a decent record. Overcome however, was just terrible. They took everything that made them sound good and watered it down. I was highly disappointed. I don’t think I can ever get into these guys again especially after seeing their latest tours. Phil is lazy and has the crowd sing most of his parts and when he does sing he is flat.

Bye forever, MetalSucks. Maybe next time, you’ll get album art posted in a timely fashion.

        made me lol

  • TheSkunkCatcher

i think this will definately be better than overcome but i dont know how it’ll compare to the other albums.

  • JB

Hoping it will be good but guessing it will be pretty bad, can’t be worse than Overcome though. At least Adam D is producing again…

  • steelie

Overcome was such a fucking atrocious record, it’ll take something very special to restore faith in them.

Labonte saying it’ll please fans of Overcome is not a good start.

  • tubcat

Behind Silence and Solitude was a really great metalcore album from the day when metalcore actually meant something. I don’t know what most of you think but those first few Boston/New England metalcore albums that made it past the small indie labels were quite awesome. I still say Labonte’s Shadows Fall days were most excellent and prob better than a bunch of Brian Fair’s stuff with that band.

  • Slaughterhouse

Am I the only one that has liked all of their releases? But I do have to agree w/ their live performance. Phil has not proven he can hit that shit outside of the studio. He runs out of breath alot.

    • Sambo

I love ATR and I love all their albums except for Behind Silence and Solitude. Couldn’t ever get fixated on that album. While Overcome was different than say The Fall of Ideals and while The Fall of Ideals was different than This Darkened Heart, each album sounds different, and though most bands don’t find real success by changing their sound, this band has found success. And who gives a crap if Overcome went mainstream? Doesn’t mean it’s 100% horrible. Before the Damned, Chiron, Do Not Obey, Relinquish, and Overcome were splendid tracks in my opinion.

And every time I have seen ATR live, 3 times total, Phil could sing really good. You just get the other end of the bargain.

  • Anthony

Fall of Ideals is an excellent album.

    • http://www.twistedcritic.wordpress.com Chris

I agree, and I’m glad Adam D. is producing once again.

    • DustintheWind

Ill third that..I was reeealy into that album for a long time…But ever since Overcome, which I didn’t dislike that much, every time ATR comes on my ipod i find myself skipping it. They’re just very meh to me now

  • http://www.smnnews.com big_metal_al

Axl, why the hate? I’ve actually liked each ATR album a lot, and while Overcome had some rough moments, the good parts are some of their best – listen to “Before The Damned”. I know everyone has their own opinions but I back ATR.

  • Genial Gentile

Adam D is the new Ross Robinson

  • Jonathan

Overcome was, for the most part, terrible. But I love ATR’s previous albums, no doubt. The Fall of Ideals was the album that really got me into metal. So, as much as they may not be on top of their game, I stil respect them, and with Adam D. producing again (thank god), I’m really hoping this will redeem them. Will it?

…I doubt it. I hate to say it, but I do.

  • Alex

Their old stuff was sick, maybe they aren’t good live, so i won’t go see them and ruin it. But back when i was just becoming a teenager, these guys amongst 4 -5 other bands really got me into metal. So hopefully they give us something good.

  • Wookie983

This album has protools written all over it.

I’ll agree with you about This Darkened Heart. Also, I don’t think those are glowing faces. It looks more like two hands together about to do a vertical haduken.

  • CrapMcPoopin

Phil is the weakest link in this band. He is such a poser. He will jump on any bandwagon that is hot. Unfortunately, I feel he has much of the creative control within the band. There are very talented musicians in the band, but I guess Phil has them in the business mind of things.

  • soy el niño más bonito

man, i used to love the shit out of this band. This Darkened Heart and The Fall of Ideas are two of my favorite metalcore records, but Overcome was just so fucking terrible that i can’t even really be that interested in this new one. i’ll wait till reviews come out to listen to it. i don’t expect much.

    are faceless poeple in style…

  • dudeiknowmetal

It’s true Phil Labonte cannot sing worth a shit. Every single singing part of Overcome is autotuned or hashed together in the studio with probably 20 takes. It’s embarrassing watching them live because he ruins what would be a perfect performance by the band (even though they are boring to watch). He screams really well and has great rhythm, he shouldn’t try to sing anymore.

As someone who goes to about 6+ of their shows a year I can say that this band has more F**KING energy than most bands out there. They don’t need a big fancy setup with all kinds of crap, stairs, lights, pyro, giant weird ass things. Phil has more energy than any other singer I know (probably the only one you’ll ever see pull a commando style barrel roll) and the band is following suit. Plus there’s only so much running around you can do while trying to play a song. On a personal basis they are an amazing group of people who love to play music and enjoy the love from their fans. Of what I’ve heard off the new album it is going to be amazing, for you naysayers who thought Overcome sucked and that For We Are Many is going to suck maybe you should listen with your ears and not your mouths.

    • Andy Synn

This comment wins the thread ^

I mean, I’m not sure where the thing about lights and “giant weird ass things” comes from, but it’s still funny.

And I like how people like this always equate “energy” to good live performance. I mean yes, it IS important, but I think most people on here have critiqued Phil Labonte for his inability to sing live. Which I unfortunately agree with. Also, why does him doing a “barrel roll” have any importance?

And how nice they are as people has nothing to do with how good they are as a band. A band’s music is in many ways a separate entity to the band themselves as individuals.

And what exactly does “listen with your ears and not your mouths” mean? It’s such a genius yet meaningless statement. I can only assume they’re trying to suggest that people don’t deserve to comment on a band or critique them in any way, but then clearly no-one should defend them either. If you’re going to deny people the right to have an opinion and discuss it online then clearly you shouldn’t get a say either.

      And for the record…

Fall Of Ideals = amazing album. Stars definitely aligned on that one. Even though I’d say my tastes have changed since then I will still happily go back to it. Ditto for This Darkened Heart.

Overcome though… awful. Terribly triggered drums, artificial sounding productions, massively auto-tuned and over-produced vocals and just terribly predictable “pop” song-writing. There are small moments of “good” but very few and far between.

All that remains of this album is a keyed up piece of plastic on the floorboard of my car.
