DEREK KERSWILL AVAILABLE TO SPEND MORE TIME ON TANGENTS

Derek Kerswill, who has been the drummer in Unearth since 2007, is now out of the band. The oft-utilized “creative differences” explanation was the only one given; the band promises to that they “will be announcing a replacement drummer for our upcoming European stint” shortly, and still plan to release a new album next year.

Kerswill is a great drummer but this news doesn’t really get me down. He’s the band’s third skin beater (that means “drummer,” right?), and The March, the 2008 release on which he played, wasn’t my favorite Unearth album, but it also wasn’t my least favorite Unearth album, and I really don’t think that any of Unearth’s albums are bad. I guess what I’m saying is, Kerswill was not the driving creative force behind this band, and I somehow suspect that they’re gonna bounce back pretty quickly.

And in the meantime, Kerswill’s Tangents project released their debut album, One Little Light Year, yesterday. It’s not my thing but I know some fine people who dig it. Hopefully it will keep Kerswill busy.

Axl, what do you think of “III: In The Eyes of Fire “? Is that your “least favorite”? Because I know “The Oncoming Storm” can’t be it unless you’re fucking crazy.

I would say my order is:
      The oncoming storm
      III
      The March
Strings of conciseness (but in all fairness I’ve barely listened to this cd, just never struck my liking)

Alot of people hated III but personally I liked it. I thought it went for a more shredy sound but still had their must have hardcore breakdowns…. The march just sounds like they got really drunk and wrote a cd with Adam D. And “The Oncoming Storm” imo is the “classic” and best of their albums (which when “The March” was being recorded I was stoked because Adam D produced the oncoming storm as well….but when it came out I wasn’t all that impressed).

The Stings of Conscience is my least favourite

  • DirtyWarriorMan

When Stings of Conscience came out I was totally blown away. Loved that record. Then Oncoming Storm came out and it was a little less exciting, a little more streamlined, but also more polished, and it rocked. Then they put out the Oncoming Storm again. And again. And god this band is boring now.

I’m with you on that one, anthony.
In the eyes of fire sat on my shelf for a few years before I really got into it, and now it’s by far my favorite album. I wish my boy Mike Justian never left because he clearly made that album pack the punch that it does. The dude has some serious speedage. Being a drummer myself, I appreciate that.

Odd. I was clicking random shit on Wikipedia last night and saw that the Unearth page only had four members. That explains it.

ah thats too bad. he was a stand up dude, hung out with him once when i saw them opening for testament. im sure they will be just fine.

Mike Justain is the TRUE drummer for Unearth. When he left so did their creativity

YEah!!!I totally agree!!! For me III is their best album in every way.
