BEST METAL ALBUMS OF 2010: LET THE ARGUING BEGIN!

Wednesday, November 10th, 2010 at 3:30pm by

2010

It’s only November 10th and Thanksgiving is still two full weeks away, yet I’m already starting to see ads for holiday sales and gifts cropping into my TV regimen of football (University of Michigan and NY Jets!), Mantracker and Survivorman. Just as “the holiday season” seems to start earlier and earlier every year, so too does it seem like journalists begin talking about their year-end “best of” lists earlier and earlier with each passing year. But hey, I suppose that by mid-November just about everything that’s gonna come out in a given year already has, and since us webmasters aren’t dealing with print deadlines we can always sneak a release in last-minute if needed.

So, what are the best metal records of 2010?

The first metal site to arrive to 2010′s “best of” party is Stereokiller, an awesome site that’s recently come onto my radar. Stereokiller has put together a nifty little voting app that allows you to pick your favorite albums of the year, rank them, and have them weighted against other peoples’ votes to produce a running ranked list. If your album isn’t on the existing list (which already has 325 albums!) you can simply write it in as I just did with three of my favorite albums of 2010, Ihsahn’s After, Mantric’s The Descent and Ratt’s Infestation (in no particular order).

So, go get on your horse and vote for your favorites of 2010. As we always do, MetalSucks will have our own countdown of sorts to close out the year.

As if we needed to tell you, have at it in the comments and tell us what your 2010 lists are gonna look like.

      • Moltanic

I agree with most of your comments except Soulfly. Soulfly’s new album ruled but yeah Dimmu Burger and Acacia Shitstain suck balls.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nate-Allen/100000277396138 Nate Allen

acacia strain is the only decent band on that list you tards. the rest of it is shit!

    • mchuckie1006

      Diamond Eyes all the way

      • Brendan Demeris

i thought the topic was best ‘metal’ album?
        not absolute garbage album

    • Enselan

as The Comic Guy from The Simpsons say “Worst List Ever!!” LOL!

      • http://www.schenkeltown.com Schenkeltown

that’s why it’s my list fuckos

        • ApterousDude

Are you sure you even like metal?

    • J-Rod

I don’t quite get Vince’s fascination with that goddamn Infestation? Sure, I woulda
been rockin out to that shit hard in my Samurai in ’90, but I can’t understand why the fuck he’s even mentioning it in the top 50 of this year? Please advise!

  • Arsen

Whitechapel, Parkway Drive, and Veil of Maya were really good. After the Burials Album will be good too. Those are the ones off the top of my head

    • AetherJake

      Troll.

      • Deth

Troll because you don’t agree? People have to have the same tastes as you?

        • Dubs

Troll because those bands are gayer than Barney Frank.

          • AetherJake

            This

        • ACoffinShip

Troll because calling Whitechapel the best of the year is like saying McDonald’s is the best restaurant ever. A dead fucking giveaway.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Zach-Gates/14209777 Zach Gates

As crazy as it sounds, some people really, really truly like deathcore bands.

          • AetherJake

Dude, that’s a little far fetched. I manage to convince myself the world doesn’t suck by telling myself that everyone that likes deathcore is trolling.

          • Deth

My God, the horror of someone liking bands you don’t! Everyone must quickly conform to your tastes!

          • http://www.schenkeltown.com Schenkeltown

clearly you have not had the mcrib.

          • Kevin Halsted

Whitechapel is, as far as I’m concerned, the ONLY deathcore band worth caring about. That being said, its not on my list, and I don’t like the other bands this guy said.
Oh lie, After the Burial doesn’t suck, but they wouldn’t be in my top 100

    • Aaron

Don’t Attack Attack have a new album out too?!? ZOMG

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ernesto-Garcia/100000735769434 Ernesto Garcia

        attack attack! is horrible

        • Rob

          That was the joke Einstein.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dre-Toledo/628955415 Dre Toledo

    Dillinger Escape Plan’s Option Paralysis
    Deftone’s Diamond Eyes
    Fleshwrought’s Dementia Dislexya
    Periphery’s Periphery
    Daath’s Daath

    for picking some right now.

And shit… I can’t remember this band that was so great that (its name) sounded like Vans off the Wall……

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dre-Toledo/628955415 Dre Toledo

East of the Wall – Ressentiment :P

      Also love Mantric’s The Descent.

    • Kevin Halsted

I can deal with your picks.
Cept Deftones and Dillinger wouldn’t be top 5 for me.
Fleshwrought is numba 1 in my books.

      • stevebazzano

periphery’s is number one in my book,

  • testicle cutlets

    Attila- Rage. this shit bumps

    • AetherJake

      Another troll.

      • testicle cutlets

lolz. for realsies though. option paralysis ripped me a new butthole. I’d put that and periphery at the top of the list.

  • leathalmeower

Decrepit birth pretty much had the only album that i was interested in this year

    • Brendan McGregor

Seconded. That album was awesome. I’d say Fleshwrought is up there as well. Major fuckyeahs to the Bay Area.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dre-Toledo/628955415 Dre Toledo

        +1 Fleshwrought!

      • dudeiknowmetal

Brendan McGregor is a bass player wanabe troll but he is totally wright about fleshwrought. ;)

        • dudeiknowmetal

    Immolation
    Decrepit Birth
    An Autumn for Crippled Children
    Zoroaster
    Hooded menace

    • Greggum

      I CAN DIG!!

    • Deth

I’m amazed at how much that Ihsahn disc has grown on me. I’m not a fan of black metal and couldn’t care less about his previous releases but I heard two songs off this new album and the saxophone alone intrigued me. It’s still not something I can listen to all the time but I’m enjoying it more and more.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Alejandro-Aldana/683878171 Alejandro Aldana

word. sax in metal is pretty fucking badass.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ian-Smith/507358528 Ian Smith

Now thats a damn good list. The new Immolation and Melechesh for the win.

    • ApterousDude

      Great list. Very awesome choices.

  • Nick

Honestly, though there have been plenty of decent albums, I still haven’t heard any that stand out as a clear front-runner, particularly in metal. So as for now, I think I might have to go with Rosetta’s ‘A Determinism of Morality’, though I have been avoiding the early Agalloch tracks in favor of hearing it all together for the first time when I pick up the album, so they could potentially win me over yet.

Some others that I’ve liked, though not necessarily metal:
    Daughters – s/t
    Fang Island – s/t
Elders – ‘The Coming Light’ (local band)
    Torche – ‘Songs For Singles’
    Envy – ‘Recitation’
    Enslaved – ‘Axioma Ethica Odini’

    still undecided:
    Kylesa – ‘Spiral Shadow’
    Ion Dissonance – ‘Cursed’
    Lantlôs – ‘.Neon’
    Tera Melos – ‘Patagonian Rats’

    • tim

      “Daughters” is fucking brilliant.

    • Philosiraptor

Had to leave a comment because at last someone mentioned Tera Melos. Those guys don’t get near enough credit.

  • atomicgarden

    ^^^ deathcore anyone? ^^^

    • Robot Jesus

      Acacia Strain
      Whitechapel
After the Burial- when it comes out
      Veil of Maya
      Impending Doom

      • Robot Jesus

also Atilla’s new album is fun as hell

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ernesto-Garcia/100000735769434 Ernesto Garcia

impending is good but not as good now

    • atomicgarden

I was implying that deathcore is not good

      • Robot Jesus

nice troll but still i like it

  • Deth

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/James-Sterling-Rice/1030080162 James Sterling Rice

AAL came out last year bro.

      • Deth

Eh, whatever – it’s still amazing and didn’t really get any press or notaritety until this year anyway so…

  • Patton

Dillinger Escape Plan – Option Paralysis
    Norma Jean – Meridional

  • blahblah

“The first metal site to arrive to 2010′s best of party is Stereokiller, an awesome site that’s recently come onto my radar”

Not a bad year, but it’s no ’94.

    • Deth

I wish I could like the Periphery disc more. Music = amazing! Whiny emo-style vocals suck. The opening riff on that disc is sheer heavy awesomeness. I wish I could just make it past the vocals.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dan-Burton/784250631 Dan Burton

I always describe them as ‘If 30 Seconds To Mars did a Meshuggah covers album’

        • Deth

          Perfect description.

        • clrtxf

Close, more like if Saosin did Meshuggah covers. He sounds almost exactly like that dude.

      • Connor

        they released an instrumental version.

      • Krome

Dude, get their instrumental version of their self-titled. Kicks ass.

    • Big Tricky

That Ulcerate album came out last year.

    • Driven9

      Bought???

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dan-Burton/784250631 Dan Burton

        Yeah, I have a job.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dan-Burton/784250631 Dan Burton

I will clarify, maybe only half of those are physical cds, but its really not that difficult to go to itunes and click ‘purchase’.

          • http://www.myspace.com/barbelzoa Lordassenfroth

+10000000 thats alot of cds, props for actually buying.

          • Deth

Agree on the props for buying discs, we’re a dying breed. I’m over 1000 now and have only downloaded 2 songs off of itunes…ever. I just like having a physical product and having the display of discs.

          • Utmu

I buy discs for the most part, but I sometimes resort to iTunes. I think a band deserves what money it can get for its work. Also: I’m jealous of that long ass list.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Cooper-Stapleton/604628709 Cooper Stapleton

someone else listens to clinging to the trees of a forest fire?!?
      huzzah!

          woot.

      • ACoffinShip

I dig your and Sanskar’s lists. Seriously gonna have to check out the bands you listed and I completely missed out on. There’s just so much shit coming out at any given time that I end up not even listening to stuff I like as much as I should…

  • SP420

Either Atheist or Rotting Christ and that’s about it. This year has blown for metal, especially when compared to last year.

  • Doug

I don’t know what some people are thinking – 2010 has been quite a year for metal. Here are my picks (more than 10, of course):

  • super blaze dave

tbh i havent listened to anything new other than daath’s new one and high on fire’s new one. I just keep listening to Gojira and Protest the Hero. For non-metal, how about some Kid Cudi- Man on the Moon 2?

  • http://thenumberoftheblog.com/ Gaia

Uh, Fatso Jetson’s Archaic Volumes is pretty sweet.
The new Melvins record was definitely a highlight.
    Ufomammut’s Eve is incredible.
Shellfin’s Second Hand Family is cool.
Quest For Fire’s Lights From Paradise will definitely be up there.

    • http://thenumberoftheblog.com/ Gaia

Oh and Electric Wizard will inevitably end up somewhere near the top.

    • halloway

really awesome to see a quest for fire mention.

Damn… There was a TON of good stuff that came out this year… I could probably make a top 40, and still have a tough time narrowing down all the great music that came out in 2010.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kyle-Kessler/1031820406 Kyle Kessler

I really liked Blind Guardian’s At the Edge of Time. Best power metal I’ve heard this year, at least. Anyone else enjoy it?

    • Joe

Not really a huge power metal fan but that album is pretty awesome

    • Bob Cock

Great album. Will be on my list.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Anthony-Showalter/100000592087843 Anthony Showalter

I L O V E Blind guardian, they are one of my all time favorite bands, but I wasn’t really feeling that last record. I feel that the songs meandered too much, they tried to stuff so many parts in between each chorus and the individual parts didn’t really complement each other or add to the song as a whole. I have the same complaint with the new Dimmu Borgir album.

  • Sevenspinner

Iron Maiden – The Final Frontier
    Soilwork – The Panic Broadcast
As I Lay Dying – The Powerless Rise

Oh, and the new High on Fire, Blind Guardian, Atheist, Kvelertak, Xasthur and Nachtmystium… fuck, there’s a lot.

      • Isaac

And I wouldn’t quite count the Bled or Cancer Bats as metal, but this site really likes ‘em so I guess their new stuff counts. Kickass.

      • Isaac

Also in terms of non-metal, Joanna Newsom’s “Have One on Me” and Julie Christmas’ “The Bad Wife” blew my fucking mind.

  • Alex_P

Wow, a lot of people I disagree with here. There’s a few I need to listen to more (Winterfylleth might place, as it’s great), and a few I have yet to hear (Cloudkicker, Agalloch), but so far, it’s looking like:

    1. The Ocean – Anthropocentric
    2. Ihsahn – After
    3. Early Graves – Goner (severely underrated, IMO)
    4. Stargazer – A Great Work of Ages
    5. Harvey Milk – A Small Turn of Human Kindness
    6. The Ocean – Heliocentric (faded a little, I’ll admit, but still fantastic)
    7. Myrath – Desert Call (looks like I’m one of the only ones on this one, but I don’t care)
    8. Castevet – Mounds of Ash
    9. Nails – Unsilent Death
    10. Torture Division -Evighetens Dårar (possibly tied with the new Hail of Bullets, though)

This list is by no means final, though. Overwhelmingly, I feel like 2010′s been a year with hundreds of good releases and a dearth of amazing releases. The new releases by bands like Celeste, Intronaut, Ludicra, Immolation and Darkthrone are all good, but not quite as good as their previous work. If it’s well-known and I’ve excluded it, it was for a reason.

    • Alex_P

Oh, a few more that have a chance:
      Swans- ‘My Father’
      Ghost – ‘Opus Eponymus’

And I still need to check out the new Mekong Delta album. Otherwise, I can safely say I listened to anything worth giving a fuck about.

    • dudeiknowmetal

of course you disagree, of course.

The Ghost album is awesome and definitely in my top five. Glad someone else mentioned it.

    • Isaac

I completely forgot that existed. That is a fucking awesome album, though.

    • Doug

Phantom Ship is a great album – gotta listen to it some more.

      • AetherJake

        Fucking this.

  • MeesterDerp

Both The Ocean records, Blind Guardian – At the Edge of Time, and TesseracT’s EP.

  • shpostal

A very tough call between Death Angel’s “Relentless Retribution” and Overkill’s “Ironbound”. Both bands deserve to be so much bigger!

  • ACoffinShip

Rather than listing favorites I’m going to start with a couple albums that really impressed me that I absolutely did not expect to at all:

    The Acacia Strain: Wormwood
    Soilwork: The Panic Broadcast
Blind Guardian: At the Edge of Time

Not hands down favorites, but I was thrilled with them and expected them to be meh. As for favorites this year…

    The Ocean: Heliocentric & Anthropocentric
    Nachtmystium: Addicts
    Triptykon: Eparistera Daimones
The Dillinger Escape Plan: Option Paralysis
    Arsis: Starve for the Devil

There’s some recent albums I’ve been really enjoying (Intronaut’s Valley of Smoke, Conducting from the Grave’s Revenant) but I’m holding off on making any declarations.

  • obc

if forced to pick 10 at the moment…

    Enslaved – Axioma Ethica Odini
    Shattered Hope – Absence
    Negura Bunget – Maiestrit

Mar de Grises – Streams Inwards
High On Fire – Snakes of the Divine
    Alcest – Ecailles De Lune
    Watain – Lawless Darkness
    Ufomammut – Eve
    Darkthrone – Circle The Wagons

honorable metion to Deathspell Omega, Fungoid Stream, Bison BC, Melechesh, and Heathen

  • SourDeez

I can’t decide yet, but Deathspell Omega’s new album is fucking incredible, Alcest’s album was pretty awesome, and I actually like the new Kylesa album more than their last one.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Anthony-Showalter/100000592087843 Anthony Showalter

This year wasn’t as big as last year for metal, but if you were paying attention, there was a lot of absolutely great stuff. From High on Fire and Triptykon and Cephalic Carnage to little-known stuff like Alcest and Agalloch. And lets not forget Watain, Kylesa, Howl, Black Tusk, Blind Guardian and torch. Goddamn, and that’s just a cursory glance.

    • Aaron

how the FUCK is agalloch still little known? that is the biggest travesty i could ever imagine.

      • Alex_P

I wouldn’t really say they are, man. Same goes for Alcest. They fit into the category of bands that indie kids like (nothing against them personally, of course).

        • SourDeez

Have you ever met an indie kid in real life who likes Agalloch or Alcest? I know I’ve brought this up a lot here, but it’s something that really bugs me. People refer to bands like Wolves in the Throne Room and the aforementioned “A” bands as “hipster” or “indie” black metal, without ever having attended any of their shows. I’ve seen all three bands, not an indie kid or hipster in sight, and I live in NYC which is the hipster capital of the universe. So I don’t know where those labels come from. The internet, I guess.

      • http://www.myspace.com/somethinglikesweet CJ

you know just because of this comment i decided to check out agalloch for the first time for some reason thinking i would hate it and damn. to my surprise it’s pretty badass.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Anthony-Showalter/100000592087843 Anthony Showalter

Of course, if you’re on this site, you would know about Alcest and Agalloch. But most people don’t know who the hell those bands are! At my school, most of the metal kids I run into don’t even know who Mastodon are, no joke, and much MUCH less obscure bands like Agalloch and Alcest. They’re all listening to Lamb of God and Avenged Sevenfold, and old thrash bands.

i was beginning to think that i was the only one who thought that the new USX reigns supreme over all this year.

      • Pete

That album is so damn good. Maiden was my favorite this year until RTITN came out. They’ve entered dream-territory. Go check out the newest Beach House album, Teen Dream too. Not obviously heavy by any means, but it makes nice company for the new USX in its dream-ness. It’s one of the other albums I can’t get enough of this year…

        • yetzer hara

i get what you’re saying about the “dream-ness” of beach house. they’re a good band, but it’s not my bag. beach house sounds a little too indie and upbeat/positive for my likings. for me, a good counterpart to USX is “little hells” by marissa nadler. her entire catalog is great, but “little hells” is my favorite.

I’m shocked at the amount of votes for Fear Factory’s Mechanize, it just wasn’t that good. And I’ve been a fan since their inception.

Many ++’s to the Deftones votes, so different than anything else, every record of theirs is a progression and always fantastical.

  • KAH

As far as I’m concerned, the only great albums thus far are As I Lay Dying, High on Fire, Deftones, and Allegaeon (little band from Fort Collins, CO that’s going to be HUGE in 2 years). Still need to listen to Intronaut, but I don’t see this list expanding by much.

I agree with those who say that 2010 has just a few great albums, a decent number of very good releases (Heaven Shall Burn, Soilwork, Maiden, etc.), a ton of underwhelming/overrated ones (Fear Factory, Misery Index), and a few just plain crappy/disappointing ones (Bleeding Through, how do you follow up Declaration with THAT?!?! Dimmu Borgir, you sound really stale and out of ideas)

As for non-metal CDs, Pendulum (though they technically have a metal song on there) and Coheed and Cambria are setting the bar in my book, and I’m looking forward to the new Alter Bridge.

Honestly, Agalloch always blows everything out of the water. That being said, anyone who says that this year sucked for metal is…an idiot.
    Metal: Dawnbringer, slough feg
Death Metal: Withered, decrepit birth, Atheist, fistula, nile, stargazer
    Doom: SALOME, mar de grises
Black Metal: Lantlos, Alcest, Woe, Krieg, Nachtmystium, Winterfylleth, Drudkh, castevet, burzum, enslaved, kvelertak, ludicra, melecesh, nightbringer, TWILIGHT, WATAIN
Sludge: High on fire, black tusk, torche, harvey milk, howl, kylesa, morne
    Other: Coliseum, DEP, triptykon

    So there’s my two cents.

    Decrepit Birth- Polarity
Allegaeon- Fragments of Form and Function

  • Beauzaque

My number one was definitely High On Fire – Snakes For The Divine, surprising that it came out so early in the year. After that, it’s harder to nail down, but all of these were pretty awesome:

    Sigh – Scenes From Hell
    Watain – Lawless Darkness
Orphaned Land – The Never Ending Way Of Orwarrior
    Ihsahn – After
Son Of Aurelius – The Farthest Reaches
Blind Guardian – At The Edge Of Time
    Bison B.C. – Dark Ages
    Alcest – Ecailles De Lune
Misery Index – Heirs To Thievery

…and that’s all the ones that really grabbed me. A couple others, like Keep Of Kalessin, and the new ones from Iron Maiden and Dark Tranquility, were ok but not that awesome. Then there’s shit that I just picked up like Enslaved and Daath that I’m just not sure about yet.

These are the albums that I think were notable releases. I realize that most of you closed minded, non eclectic fucks will disagree with this list… To each his own, if you really enjoy music, you’ll listen to more than one genre. Variety is the spice of life, there is too much good music to just sit and listen to what you think and define as “Metal”. Your definition of metal most likely varies to the next guys definition of metal. So hate on the list, but if you didn’t atleast listen to a few albums like Journal, or The Contortionist or Orbs… GET OUT OF YOUR FUCKING CLOSET IN YOUR PARENTS HOUSE, GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR ASS AND FIND SOME NEW AND ORIGINAL FUCKING MUSIC!!!! QUIT LISTENING TO THE SAME10 BANDS WHO ALL SOUND THE SAME (i.e. Impending Doom , Cephalic Carnage, Decrepit Birth, Son of Aurelius, White Chapel etc..)

I haven’t really gotten that many albums this year, and still have a shitload more I want, these are the ones I enjoyed (I’m not saying top ten) in no particular order:

    Cephalic Carnage- Misled By Certainty
    Pathology- Legacy of the Ancients

Lair of the Minotaur- Evil Power
Hour of Penance- Paradogma (I don’t have the entire album, but plan to)

  • Dayv

A lot of the best albums I’ve picked up this year actually came out in 2009. Ruling those out, and in no particular order:

    Kylesa – Spiral Shadow
The Austerity Program – Backsliders and Apostates Will Burn
Red Sparowes – The Fear Is Excruciating, But Therein Lies the Answer
Tombs – Fear is the Weapon (do expanded reissues count?)
Godflesh – Streetcleaner (do expanded, remastered reissues count?)
Boris – Variations (do compilations with some tracks rerecorded… hi.)

Here are the “meh” disappointments for the year — surprisingly uninteresting or uneven CDs from bands I’d usually be willing to stab a toddler for:

    Torche – Songs for Singles
Melvins – The Bride Screamed Murder

Man, there was a bunch of great stuff in 2009 that I didn’t hear ’til 2010. And probably some great stuff from this year I’ll finally hear in 2011!

  • Dayv

Oh, and if you’ll count it:

Swans – My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope to the Sky

  • Chris

i feel like theres 2 or 3 cd’s a year worth listening to more then once and this year the only really good cd i could think of released this year is the re-issue of Couldn’t Stand the Weather not to many good metal cd’s released this year

  • J-Ho

So far, all that’s set in stone is:

    Deftones – Diamond Eyes
High On Fire – Snakes For The Divine
Misery Index – Heirs To Thievery

    Song Of The Year:

Lair Of The Minotaur – Let’s Kill These Motherfuckers

After that I’d be blowing smoke up your ass. I’ve got two months to really delve into the shit people have mentioned here, though. At least two of my picks seem to be consensus top tens. Don’t understand the lack of love for Misery Index, it’s not as good as “Traitors” but that album has got some awesome cuts on it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Matt-Cooper/864625407 Matt Cooper

This year was a really good year for not metal CD’s
Only heavy releases I got into this year:

    Daughters – S/T
    Cloudkicker – Beacons

    Zach Hill – Face Tat
    Fang Island – Fang Island
    Flying Lotus – Cosmogramma
Toro y Moi – Causers of This
    Kanye – MBDTF
    Kid Cudi – MOTM2
Big Boi – Sir Lucious Left Foot: Son Of Chico Dusty

  • ken roger

  • MetalRod

Deftones ‘Diamond Eyes’ has to be in there. Other than that, I don’t really give shit. HAHA and no one will read this cuz it’s comment number 323 and I don’t give a FUCK BITCH!

    Black Breath – Heavy Breathing

Snakes for the Divine. Just for the first song. The fattest bass ever recorded, like successive punches in the head. Awesome.

Helevorn – Forthcoming Displeasures (nobody’s mentioned this one? Go listen to it..)

    Enslaved – Axioma Ethica Odini

    Ihsahn – After

    James LaBrie – Static Impulse

Overkill – Ironbound (This was out in Jan.. I didn’t even know till 2 months ago..Awesome album)

    Periphery – Periphery

    The Ocean – Heliocentric

High on Fire – Snakes for the Divine

Grand Magus – Hammer of the North

    Fear Factory – Mechanize

And after seeing soooo many people putting up DEP’s “Option Paralysis”, I wonder if i should listen to it again.. It seemed good but something was missing.. Didn’t kick it for me..

And one album i was reeealy looking forward to was Watain’s “Lawless Darkness”.. Erik’s vocals are stupendous & the guitar work is awesome.. But the songs don’t build on their 15-20 second moments of awesomeness.. They reach awesomeness & then slow it down.. And then pick it up again.. Good solid album but not in my top 10..

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Bobby-Edwards/100000405462877 Bobby Edwards

    Somewhere in the top ten:

    Decrepit Birth’s Polarity
Allegaeon’s Fragments of Form and Function

Then, after mile-wide gap between it and the other contenders, Daath’s Daath tops everything else easily. Seriously, can’t stop listening to this shit.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Robby-Steuer/518113596 Robby Steuer

    Honorable Mentions:

I’m sure a couple more records will make the “best of” list and some will drop to honorable mentions but thats hows its looking thus far.

  • j

I can’t believe Dawnbringer only got mentioned twice and once as a haven’t heard it yet.

Pretty much everything Profound Lore has issued this year has owned.

Agalloch, Salome, Dispirit, Ludicra, Slough Feg, Coffinworm, Yakuka,Hooded Menace. Christ they could be their own top ten list.

    • http://thenumberoftheblog.com/ Gaia

Yep Profound Lore has killed it this year. Great label.

  • derp

I haven’t heard anything this year that I would actually call best.
The only albums I was looking forward to were Spiral Shadow and Option Paralysis. both of which failed to live up to expectations. In fact Option Paralysis was so bad I wll probably just stop listening to DEP altogether. Spiral shadow was ok though.

Some of you with these huge lists are out of control. You need to learn the difference between good and great. In 2010 I stuggled to come up with 10 GREAT albums. 2010 was solid. 2009 was out of control. That being said here’s my 2010 list…

We need an app like Pandora that random cycles through every album named on this page. You click like/dislike, and after only 30 songs, you know which of these 100 or so albums you want to buy.

    Emm…so here’s my picks:

Electric Wizard – Black Masses (because its Electric Wizard, see?)
    The Sword – Warp Riders
    Black Pyramid – Black Pyramid
    Saviours – Accelerated Living
    Catherdal – The Guessing Game
Motorhead – The World is Yours (because its Motorhead, see?)
    Finntroll – Nifelvind
    Earthride – Something Wicked
Ghost – OPUS EPONYMOUS (I’m gonig to buy it)

    That’s it.
