DEMON HUNTER BREAK LIKE “THE WIND”

Thursday, November 18th, 2010 at 10:30am by

Demon Hunter to good taste: “Hey, let’s take a little walk in the woods, whadda ya say? Oh, these shovels? They’re just, uh, our walking sticks. Yeah, that’s the ticket.”

Demon Hunter, one of approximately eighteen thousand insanely successful metal bands whose appeal is completely lost on me, are streaming a new song, “The Wind,” here. It comes off of Happy Christmas Volume 5, a Tooth & Nail comp consisting almost entirely of bands I’ve never heard of. (Ivoryline? Sent By Ravens? Thousand Foot Krutch? Who are you people???)

And the song sounds an awful lot like a song that I myself wrote about fifteen years ago, right around the time I realized I had no talent and I would never punish the world with my crappy guitar playing and sub-par song composition skills again. But I guess Demon Hunter has no conscience, so they went ahead and made a career out of this. Swell.

Side note: when I googled the words “demon hunter the wind” to try and get more details of the song, the first website to come up was called jesusfreakhideout.com. Then my computer started to burn up and cry out “I’m melting! I’M MELTING!!!

Sent By Ravens is an alright post-hardcore influenced rock band from South Carolina (which is where I live, hence why I know them). The local radio stations hyped them to Hell and back. They’re nothing special, but they aren’t the worst band ever or anything. They released an album over the summer. Obviously, no one, including most people around here, cared.

Sent By Ravens seem to hop on every fucking show I go to at the Brewery in North Carolina. Its kind of unnerving at this point. My friends and I will be joking that SBR will probably be there, and lo and behold they are there when we get there taking their gear inside. They’ll probably be at the Chariot show in December too since they are christian as well.

      • Kye

They did the same thing as New Brookland down here. I’ll actually be at that Chariot show (first time I’ve been at the Brewery since I saw He is Legend there something like 3 years ago) and I wouldn’t be surprised at all if SBR were there. The Chariot crowd will eat them alive though. Those are some hard to please fans.

What the hell does Sent By Ravens even mean?

      • hotsauce

What the hell do most band names mean?

      • Altered Bestiality

Do you have an inability to parse three word phrases?

        Bitches be SENT by RAVENS!

        Simple really.

Christians playing metal is like the police rappin

    • The I

Not really. I’m an atheist, but I was raised Catholic and can see the appeal metal (especially metalcore) has to young Christians, being all about suffering and hardcoreness and the like.

Thousand Foot Krutch are just about the worst thing ever. As a Canadian, I sincerely apologize.

    • Sambo

I think you have mistaken them for Justin Bieber.

      • Jonathan

        Wait, there’s a difference?

    • Deathbedwish44

      as an american…shut up.

  • Sambo

I don’t see why you guys have such a huge hatred for Christian bands. I understand why you think they aren’t good musicians but just straight-up mocking them is really insulting.

We mock anything that sucks. The Chariot is Christian, and they rule, and therefore they get our love. Except for the haters, of course. Haters gonna hate.

      • Deathbedwish44

oh good so its ok to mock you?

  • F

This coming from someone with the screen name Sambo

  • jethr0skull

I don’t hate a band for being christianites, feel kinda sorry em. Metal is the sound of hell and god will punish them.

    • think twice

How do you know God will punish them for playing metal? back up what you say with some scripture or you yourself might as well be punished… why don’t we do it like they did in the Old Testament… False prophets were killed (check for yourself, Deuteronomy 18:20 link: http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=deuteronomy%2018:19-20&version=NIV)

    • Deathbedwish44

wow are you a west boro baptist?you people are retarded.

  • jethr0skull

The belief that crows (ravens is a cityboy Yankee term we don’t say like vulture or toothbrush) carry souls back and forth to the earth is a pagan/Celtic tale. They will burn for eternity

    • http://jaydinitto.com Jay

Their name is probably a reference to Elijah being sent food by ravens in the book of 1 Kings (from the Bible).

You haven’t heard of tooth and nail because they are a christian label who trend towards the “heavier” of the christian bands out there. I have a lot of demon hunter’s older stuff, back when they had shitty production and waaaaay less clean/obnoxious vocals. They’ve gone through a million lineup changes too…oh wells.

Extol, Tourniquet, and Living Sacrifice are the only “christian” bands I really get behind these days…Tourniquet kills.

  • Azuma

This post reminded me of a christian band that doesn’t suck. Anyone else hear the new Becoming The Archetype song? I liked it but that song title was festering around in my head, I had to know what Necrotizing Fasciitis was. If you wonder the same thing and plan to do a search on it, here’s a tip: don’t… or at least don’t do it on Google Image search. Even as repulsed as I am I have to say, Necrotizing Fasciitis IS pretty metal. It’s also a pretty un-christian thing to make a song about but whatever I guess…

    • Beereded

Why is the death of flesh unchristian? Seems to be a pretty typical metaphor/analogy here. Oh, and speaking of The Chariot, everyone do themselves a favor and check out Deus Imvictus. The old drummer from The Chariot’s band: http://www.myspace.com/deusinvictus

      It made me hungry!
