ONE YOU MAY HAVE MISSED IN 2010: RED GIANT’S DYSFUNCTIONAL MAJESTY

Metallica’s transition from the genre-solidifying Master Of Puppets to the arena-ready hard rock of Load and Re-Load was a jarring experience for longtime fans still clutching their denim vests. The problem wasn’t that they put out those (ultimately multi-platinum) records, but that they had the audacity to call them Metallica albums. Between you and me, if Load had been the debut of any other band, it’d have been hailed and praised. That’s sort of how I’ve come to view Red Giant: an alternate reality version of what Lars and the boys might’ve done if unburdened of their obligations to thrash. The twelve tracks on Dysfunctional Majesty, the Cleveland, Ohio band’s second album for Small Stone Recordings, sound like James Hetfield fronting Monster Magnet, which I assure you is as balls-to-the-wall awesome as that analogy suggests. It’s another headbanging good time from the same label that brought you Gozu and House Of Broken Promises.

Check out the stream for “Chopper” below and snag a copy of the record here.

Dude definitely sounds like modern-era Hetfield. I kinda like their music, my only issue with it is that it sounds a little run-of-the-mill. And just to let you know, I’m not one of those dudes that likes my music super ‘brutal’ and obscure (sorry, I refuse to write ‘brutal’ in that other way). Decent music, pretty jamming and fun, but I’d take monster magnet over these cats any day.

How did Gort get on the cover of a Gwar record?

  • bill

once again, you dudes fucking blow it by not mentioning the best album to come out on Small Stone this year, Black Sleep Of Kali’s Our Slow Decay. Red Giant is boring.

I don’t understand how this isn’t just considered the thousandth “downtuned stoner single-note riff rock w/ the tone knob all the way down and slightly slower than mid-tempo drumming with lots of fills” band.

I picture fans of this band rocking out to this in the back of a pickup truck, while ripping a bong, slamming Budweiser cans, and eating Little Caesar’s pizza.

….which is fine, but this site is usually way snobbier about stuff (especially pizza).

that is why i recommend Black Sleep of Kali, they don’t sound like anything else on the Small Stone roster and it seems like something that Metal Sucks would love…but whatever, dudes singing about cars and ripping off the cover to old kiss albums is cool right?

Thanks for the recommendation. Looked it up and liked it. On the other hand, you sound like an angry member of Black Sheep trying to plug his band. Calm down. I promise to buy your cd and I hope you guys make it big someday.

As an actual member of BSOK, we have no idea who Bill is. Bill you should Identify yourself and write us an email blacksleepofkali@gmail.com. , Every time there is a post about a Small Stone band you rep us, thats has to be deserving of something.
