AND THIS YEAR’S NOMINATIONS FOR THE BULLSHIT METAL AND HARD ROCK GRAMMYS ARE…

Thursday, December 2nd, 2010 at 10:30am by

The Grammy nominations have been announced, and, as per usual, they’ve got nuthin’ to do with nuthin’. This isn’t a shock; the Grammys have been a meaningless award, and will remain a meaningless award. But if you’re morbidly curious, as I am, as to who old white dudes think are the créme de la créme of our music of choice, the nominees, and some more snarky commentary from yours truly, are after the jump.

Best Metal Performance

  • Iron Maiden – “El Dorado” (from The Final Frontier)
  • Korn – “Let The Guilt Go” (from Korn III: Remember Who You Are)
  • Lamb of God – “In Your Words” (from Wrath)
  • Megadeth – “Sudden Death” (from Guitar Hero: Warriors Of Rock)
  • Slayer – “World Painted Blood” (from World Painted Blood)

Korn being here is obviously a total joke, and there’s something hilarious about Mustaine getting a nod for a song from a video game. I’d like to congratulate Lamb of God for joining Slayer, Megadeth, and, some years, Metallica, in the “We get nominated pretty much no matter what” club. That’s not a knock — I love Lamb of God — but sheesh, y’know? Anyways, I don’t believe Maiden have ever won a Grammy before, but I bet they do this year — the squares who vote for these things will all recognize their name, and if they actually listen to the music, “El Dorado” is only semi-melodic song here, so it will appeal to their non-metallic ears. If Bruce Dickinson makes an acceptance speech in which he takes a shot at Ozzy, I’m all good with that.

Best Hard Rock Performance

  • Alice in Chains – “A Looking In View” (from Black Gives Way to Blue)
  • Ozzy – “Let Me Hear You Scream” (from Scream)
  • Soundgarden – “Black Rain” (from Telephantasm)
  • Stone Temple Pilots – “Between The Lines” (from Stone Temple Pilots)
  • Them Crooked Vultures – “New Fang” (from Them Crooked Vultures)

I’d suggest we all riot if Alice in Chains loses, but that would be far too great an expenditure of energy for such a nonsense “honor.” So let’s compromise and just say that if Alice in Chains loses, all the other bands should get up on-stage and commit seppuku for dishonoring their ancestors. I could live with that.

Who gives a fuck about a God damn grammy

    • http://www.theoppositionmachine.wordpress.com the opposition machine

      this! nice work…

    • Johnny Death

I know someone who’s not getting two right-handed knitted mittens for christmas!

    • mynutz

      Public Enemy #1

      • Austin Nutter

Well its a way to have metal represented to an outside audience, so in a perfect world we’d see nominations for Periphery, The Ocean, High on Fire, and so many other bands that are actually doing something in metal that’s fresh and interesting. It would be awesome to see some of the really great releases for this year get some mainstream recognition like that.

        • Major Zim

no. fuck the mainstream. i’ve come to realize that something good becoming mainstream doesnt elevate those IN the mainstream, it just degrades something that used to be much better. The mainstream pretty much means “lets take something interesting, market it, take out all thought and soul and replace it with a commercial.” There is something terribly wrong with modern culture and i’d like my metal to stay the fuck away as much as possible.

          • hainz

you, dear major, have realised correctly. checkout mainstream hypes throughout the years, almost all genres have sth good about them, but when it gets the next big thing, all freshness gets sucked out to become mor shit on the heap ( there was a time when i thought positively about hiphop for example)

Whatever, I don’t think if The Ocean got some recognition Robin Staps would start writing screamo, you’re missing the point that perhaps it could introduce more people to their music.

  • cougar party

‘El Dorado’ is arguably the worst song on the album, but Maiden should win this. I have a feeling they’ll give it to Korn though.

    • Rob

      If Korn wins I’ll cry.

skip to 3:02, nobody describes the grammys more accurately than this:

  • cougar party

Also, can anyone explain why the category is called “Best Metal Performance”? Are they actually taking into account the bands live performance of the song or is it just a fancier way of saying “Best Metal Song”?

    • pat

i have also been wondering about this for quite a while, an answer would be nice…..

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Glenn-Pillsbury/641369365 Glenn Pillsbury

Yes. Just a fancier way of saying best “metal” song.

    • Anthony

“Best song” at the grammys goes to just the songwritiers. “Performance” goes to the band or artist who actually recorded the song. They have both categories of “Performance” and “Song” for other genres of music like Rap and even General Rock, but not for Metal and Hard Rock.

So they’re taking into account the performance of the song (on album), not the quality of the songwriting itself. I guess. I don’t know.

  • GKIII

Jethro killed the metal grammy at the very beginning, we all know this.

    • Dirtman73

It was dead to begin with.

      • Steve

        word

  • Dental Damnation

Final Frontier is the best album on this list. But el dorado isn’t the best on that album. I’m more a fan of “The Alchemist”.

But it’s the grammy’s, and since when does reason or logic ever come into play in these decisions.

    • cougar party

I agree. The Alchemist is the best “short” song on the album.

  • Bicro

A Looking in View is still heavy as fuck.

  • WV

thought they nominated tracks that came out this year? 2010 grammy’s ,but some of those bands are getting a nomination for songs relased in in 09

if aic dosent win, hope soundgarden does. black rain is tits.

  • Howie

I was never crazy about A Looking In View. Something about it just didn’t click with me. Anyway, I’d take Black Rain or New Fang over it any day.

  • The Curmudgeon

Slayer and Alice In Chains should win. I think it’s kinda cool how AIC, Soundgarden and STP are getting nominated together, it’s like it’s 1993 again… I wish.

  • alex

i think ” Alejandro ” from lady gaga should be the winner !!!! HAHAHAHAHAHA

    • Full Metal Life Jacket

Careful what you wish for… It probably will.

  • yzermantiis

Where’s the nod for Coathanger Abortion?!?!? Pssh whatever haha

  • Austin Nutter

Who decides what group gets a Grammy? Why was Ministry on the ballot last year? Are there any metal fans involved in this process at all? So many questions…

  • Josh Cline

How is Ozzy in the Hard Rock category?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Glenn-Pillsbury/641369365 Glenn Pillsbury

      Was wondering this as well…

    • Anthony

I remember one year when Slipknot was nominated in both Hard Rock and Metal. Duality got Hard Rock, Vermilion got Metal.

  • alex

hanna montana and bret michaels for best metal duet !!!!!

  • jamie

    grammies sucka nyways

  • Matty K

fuck the grammys…if i were nominated, I would hope not to win…it’s a circle jerk for an industry that’s gasping for air.

  • Anthony

I hope Korn wins. Just sayin’

  • Phil Labonte

This seriously PISSES me off! For We Are Many is a GREAT metal album, and should have been among the nominees. This must be another left-wing conspiracy!

    • Full Metal Life Jacket

+1 (Unless this is really Phil Labonte. In that case, “Really?”)

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Glenn-Pillsbury/641369365 Glenn Pillsbury

You’re PISSED off!!!!! at the Grammy nominations? Dude, there are many things in this world to be pissed!!!! about. The f-in’ Grammys are decidedly not one of them.

  • http://myspace.com/theswampzombiecult Blake

What’s ironic about Lamb of God’s nomination is that “In Your Words” takes a swipe at the music industry (“a sacred cash cow with sickly tits”).

    • James M.

What’s more ironic is that they likely don’t realize it because they can’t understand what Randy is saying.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Austin-Sharktopus-Nutter/1418565949 Austin Sharktopus Nutter

What’s even more ironic is that half of these albums/songs came out last year. I thought it was a “this year in music” type of thing for people who don’t know dick about music.

  • Biclops

Jethro Tull will, invariably, take home the prize.

  • Full Metal Life Jacket

Why does the Metal category only get best song anyway? Why not best album? Oh wait, it’s probably because the old people that don’t really listen to metal can barely stand listening to 5 metal songs. There’s no way they could sit through 5 whole albums. It seems like they just take 5 of the biggest names (popularity wise) and pick a song that they made a video for, and call it good. None of the entries are ever even close to the “best performance” in metal. They’re generally not even the best performance by that band. Fuck the Grammy’s.

  • http://www.metalinsider.net Bram

What I don’t get is that not only did Wrath come out early in 2009, Lamb of God was nominated for a song off it last year! “Set To Fail” was nominated (and lost).

    • Anthony

I think they go by what year the song itself was maybe released as a single for, but it wasn’t released as a single or video anyways. Plus A Looking in View by AIC was released as a single in 09.

  • Hetallica

Anyone else notice that Alice in Chains were nominated last year for the second single from their album (“Check My Brain”), yet are nominated this year for the FIRST single (“A Looking in View”) from that same album?

Looks like the recording academy was too clueless to know of 5 songs since then to nominate.

You can debate nominees all day, taste-wise, but this looks like a case of straight-up incompetence in abiding by the Grammys’ own eligibility timeframes.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Austin-Sharktopus-Nutter/1418565949 Austin Sharktopus Nutter

“So who should get the metal nomination this year?”
“Well my son was listening to this Black Album thing, I think that’s pretty new and it was fairly heavy, let’s throw that on there.”

  • dederrdederr

all nominations kinda suck imo. el dorado wasnt that good of a song

give it to maiden cause theyre far and wide the best band nominated

that or megadave so he can shut the hell up already

  • http://www.myspace.com/barbelzoa Lordassenfroth

    grammys = bullshit

  • Maderchod

    Grammy is maderchod

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nick-Patton/100000118933417 Nick Patton

I am genuinely surprised that bring me the horizon (clearly the most br00tal metal band ever) is not on the list.

    • Sam Osborn

Bring Me The Horizon’s new album came out too late to be in contending for the 2011 Grammys, but it would be so sick if they were in next year’s Grammys

  • Marcel

And the Grammy committee couldn’t find 5 hard rock songs that were actually made in 2010, so they included a leftover (ok, a really good leftover) that Soundgarden recorded in 1991. Come to think of it, both Ozzy, AIC and STP made their best work around that time. Hmmmm….

Also, Porcupine Tree is nominated in the Surround Sound category, and the excellent Rush documentary is nominated in the Video Long Form category. Both well deserved.

And why is there only a metal “track” category? Why not an album category? Do metalheads give a fuck about the grammys? Why do I ask this?????
