LAZARUS A.D. MAKE “THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE”

The cover artwork for Lazarus A.D.’s new album Black Rivers Flow might not be of Gene Hoglan waxing his nuts, but thankfully Axl Rosenberg was correct in assuming said cover artwork wouldn’t have any bearing on the music contained therein. Lazarus A.D. have just released the first track from that album, a little ditty called “The Ultimate Sacrifice,” and it’s pretty rad.

We’ve actually gotten our advances of the full album already, and though I’ve only listened twice all the way through I can pretty safely say that “The Ultimate Sacrifice” is a pretty good representation of the album as a whole. Laz A.D. still have some of their thrash roots on display, but it seems like they’ve made a conscious decision to musically differentiate themselves from the Earache re-thrash scene; Black Rivers Flow is decidedly more cock rocky and groove-based than its predecessor and than the band’s peers. This is a good thing, as we all know how I feel about re-thrash. The direction Laz A.D. are going in reminds me primarily of two bands: classic Shadows Fall (Art of Balance and War Within-era) mixed with modern The Showdown. This is also a good thing.

Stream “The Ultimate Sacrifice” here. Black Rivers Flow drops February 1st via Metal Blade.

This is a bad thing. Yes, they were thrashy, but their material was of much higher quality than many of the re-thrash bands. This song strikes me as pretty mediocre after a couple of listens and this shows a disappointing evolution.

^this. and i thought the onslaught was top notch…

    • Brandon

      agreed.

They suck. Part of the riff from new song reminds me Pantera’s Walk.

I dig this song, and I can see how they’d get sick of playing the same songs for three years straight only to do a rehash the second time around.

That said, The Onslaught fucking slayed, so I hope the new one has sizable thrash elements left.

What the FUCK happened to Jeff Paulick fucking vocals? I’m not liking this…. Lazarus AD didn’t fucking sing in their music, they didn’t play re-re-re-re-re-hashed pantera, they played groovy, mid-tempo thrash that was catchy as fuck.

This is just, wow, questionable at best.

His vocals aren’t the worst part either. I don’t mind the riffs as they are but they aren’t too varied in this song. That’s the #1 redeeming quality of thrash, it’s a ton of awesome riffs not just 1-2 through a whole song (most of the time).

I don’t hate it though. I just don’t really love it like the last album.

      I’ve always liked Jeff’s vocals, it’s the guitarist’s i’m not crazy about.

  • Shocktroop

I already liked their last album but If the new one sounds like art of balance / war within era shads then I’m going to really love this next one

Fuck yeah Ktown represent, these guys came from my high school, liking the fact that there’s still plenty of thrash elements but at the same time have some decent groove metal influences going.

This is Absolute shit! Lazarus was one of the few bands I had faith in to keep releasing new quality headbangin material, and after they pulled of the miracle we all know very good and well as, “The Onslought”, I had no doubts about this band. I dont even know where to begin with this new track. The Spastick guitar rythm intro was boring, the vocals were stange, and all of dans leads sounded the same.
