BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME’S TOMMY ROGERS SUFFERS FROM “HYPOXIA”

Monday, January 17th, 2011 at 11:00am by

I don’t think there’s any universe in which Between the Buried and Me vocalist Tommy Rogers’ solo album, Pulse (which Rogers is actually releasing using what I believe is his middle name, Giles, and the more formal iteration of his first name), could be considered metal, but you really shouldn’t give a poop, ’cause a) Rogers definitely should have earned your respect by now, and b) it’s a wonderful album and if you don’t check it out you’re depriving no one but yourself.

Now the album closer, “Hypoxia,” is streaming here. It is an epic, achingly beautiful song, which, come to think of it, are words I could use to describe a lot of the music on Pulse. It is entirely possible that you won’t like this album, but only if you hate your ears.

So check out that track, and then come back and celebrate its excellence in our comments section. Pulse comes out February 1 on pioneering record label METAL BLADE RECORDS.

Anything endorsed by Btbam is good in my book.
Although, what I’ll really stoked for is more snippets of the not-soon-enough btbam ep.

I honestly haven’t been able to get enough of this album lately. I definitley love btbam, but this is a nice break. The album as a whole is beautiful and amazing. Tommy’s obviously got a great voice and I’m glad he demonstrates that on this album.

      Exactly. It’s an incredible release.

  • Sandy Duncan’s Glass Eye

Sounds like a 3rd-rate OK Computer-era Radiohead knockoff. So sorry.

    • Altered Bestiality

Don’t be sorry! There are a lot of stupid people here. You’ll fit right in!

  • yzermantiis

This is incredible. when my son is old enough to appreciate music, I will be slowly exposing him to Thomas Giles and BTBAM. Just about Perfect!

    • Tom

      Father of the year!

I;ll take pretty much anything BTBAM related. Definitely going to give this record a full listen.

    • Altered Bestiality

Give Sleep Shake, Mr. Bird and Medic (only heavy song on the record) a spin. I was pleasantly surprised by this one

  • jethr0skull

A pleasant surprise…. when you get your period and bloom into a woman you’ll quit listening to that assgasm core.la-la.

I hope the album as a whole does not disappoint,

I was scanning the comments to see if their would be any mention of that atrocious bit of trash. I have very low expectations for this and, hopefully, will be pleasantly surprised as a result.

Very moving. Such a cracking voice and brilliant arrangement.

  • reznik

sounds like the softer side of between the buried & me

  • sYgnal

Not Bad. Reminds me a bit too much of Porcupine Tree… I hope the rest of the album explores different avenues, though.

  • Daniel N.

great. not afraid to venture outside Metal, and that’s the beauty of it.

  • thomas k

the whole album is so good, you should get it.

I did rather enjoy this album, although I haven’t listened to it much because I got my hands on it around the same time I downloaded the (relatively) similar album from Tub Ring keyboardist Rob Kleiner’s “Rob Kleiner & The Satanics” project (available for free here), which is just a ridiculously cool, weird album. If you enjoy Thomas Giles (or Tub Ring) you ought to enjoy that one as well.

That said, I think I need to listen to Pulse a bit more.

This sucks, Btbam sucks, this comment section sucks.

Obviously your knowledge and understanding of music as a whole is very limited and closed minded. Not only is Btbam a unique metal band diversifying the genre. But they sound fantastic while doing it. The skills with which this group possess rival the greatest musicians of all time. genre bending choruses and guitar playing that is so brutal and yet so beautiful that it makes the hair stand on your arms. I respect the right to give an opinion. But when the opinion is unfounded in any sense of factual basis what is the point of speaking this opinion? It is just vomit in the form of oratorical noise

On a side note BTBAM is fantastic as is GILES

Hold up man. My biggest problem getting into btbam were the fans that claimed they were the “greatest band ever” or “rivaled any of the greatest musicians ever, John Petrucci isn’t as good as Paul” or whatever. Now…my opinion has changed significantly since Selkies, and I’ve never gone back, but the biggest letdown is the fan opinion. If we stop shouting at the haters, they might actually sit back and enjoy the music for what it is.

Now what it is is, 5 great musicians, not rivaling the best musicians ever in any way, but who still have the capacity to create interesting music that branches many genres allowing kids who enjoy metalcore (or adults who enjoy metalcore) to embrace many different styles, including jazz, and even country, and even vice versa in many cases. (That’s right, many fans of popular music will embrace them as a good band after a proper listen, but that doesn’t instantly make them the greatest band to walk the Earth, as everything of that sort is way too based in opinion to regard as fact.)

        Okay, rant’s over.
