THE BIG 4 ARE PLAYING A WHOPPING BIG ONE SHOW IN AMERICA

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011 at 11:18am by

So yesterday The Big 4 sent out this image…

…which obviously suggested that we’d be getting some Big 4 shows here in the U.S. at last. And, sure enough, soon a Facebook page went live, with the promise of an announcement to come this morning.

Well, the good news is, the announcement has been made, and the bad news is, unless you live in, or are willing and able to travel to, Indio, CA, you ain’t going.

Yep: these legendary bands will all take one stage for one show only, on April 23, at the Empire Polo Club. It’s being called The Big 4 Festival, although it’s not currently clear if any other bands will be playing, so the word “festival” might be pushing it. In any case, tickets go on sale Friday, and you can get more info here.

What a colossal let down. I can’t believe these fuckers can’t get their shit together to just give the fans what they want and do a full tour. Maybe there’s some logical reason to do it as a one-off that I’m not thinking of, but it would have be pretty fucking great for this to be excusable.

Oh well. I guess it doesn’t really matter. Unless your gig ticket comes with a time machine that allows you to see all four of these bands in the 80s, the show is gonna be more like a fun gimmick than an orgasm-inducing event anyway.

Let loose your cries of disappointment or indifference in the comments section below.

same venue as coachella, 1 week later

  • Vakarm

I hate to say “i told everyone so”. I’ve often commented on this site claiming the Big 4 would never fully tour across the US.

Well, i’m glad for the fans that live on the West, but for the rest of the fans across Canada and the US, this just prooves that they can’t put their egos aside to give fans all over the world what they want: a full blown tour across their homeland

I never thought my esteem for the Big 4 could sink lower

  • jules

    first. that is all

    • Matt

Way to be third, homie. YOU MAD?

      • wv

and four minuites later. take you that long to fail?

      • Hetal

  • ceth carter

My guess is there is one band holding up the parade and i would be willing to bet Its not Anthrax…anyway I bet you can expect to see some “big 3″ shows with a Testament and or Exodus going down. I just have a gut feeling that there is one band in particular that is holding it up and its really kinda hard to guess which one. I really would be surprised if it was Anthrax but the other 3 band have all proven to be able to hold super grudges and be hard to work with at many time thorugh history so its anyones best guess.

    • James M.

Well considering that Anthrax, Slayer, and ‘Deth toured together….

  • rob

Ticketmaster says its starting at 2pm. i think this will be an all day festival. tickets are $99.

its one date because all the bands have other obligations. They also want to see how much it will draw in the states. slayer/megadeth did the same thing with the carnage tour.
i think the full tour will be midjuly to sept at football stadiums (like summer sanitarium).

    • http://thatdevilmusic.blogspot.com Rob Liz

That’s fucking horseshit. They know full well how it’s going to draw.

      • rob

i mean the number to see if the should play arenas at 20,000 or stadium at 60,000 plus.

metallica hasnt really played any big shows is last summer sanitarium.

        • http://thatdevilmusic.blogspot.com Rob Liz

Again. They already know they will fill stadiums. There is no testing of the waters here. Are you kidding me? The issue is the buildup to make this seem like it will be a full blown tour and it’s a one off. That’s why people are pissed. You can throw all of your logical assumptions you want it doesn’t change the fact that these groups fucked a bunch of people over today.

          • rob

Metallica and megadeth are acting like there are more dates coming. they are waiting to see how this does. This a basic business ploy, limit supply which raises demand. end result more ppl will come to the shows and they can charge more. a lot of big tours do stuff like this.

they said its the only date this time around. wait a few months and more shows will be announced just like slayer/megadeth carnage tour.

  • Skylar

Fucking lame. Oh well, they did say ‘this go around’, and I can’t see them not hitting at least NY at some point.

Aparently the rumor now is Megadeth is headlining Mayhem tour anyway. Figures.

    • rob

godsmack and disturbed are headlning with megadeth as direct support. which i think sucks.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Austin-Pearl-Nutter/1418565949 Austin Pearl Nutter

        Lolwut?

  • Hot Donut

They don’t need to do a full tour, but one show is like a slap in the face. I don’t see any reason why they couldn’t do Chicago and New York in addition to California.

  • BlackVomit

It’s amazing people still care about these 4 bands. 1987 would have been a much better time instead of 2011!?!?!? Who cares?????????

    • Timothy

      Your smart.

  • http://thatdevilmusic.blogspot.com Rob Liz

You bet your ass they will sell tickets to arenas across the country to watch it on close circuit. I get the obligations thing but don’t buld this thing up to be some massive thing if it’s not. Just announce a one off show and the date tickets go on sale and move on.

  • Matt

I hauled my ass to Indio a few years ago to see, what I thought, was going to be the one-and-only reunion of Rage Against the Machine. Six months later, I was shaking my head as I purchased my ticket to see them on Randall’s Island.

Don’t let anyone tell you this isn’t going across this country and into Canada, the Big 4 are obviously a bunch of pussies testing the financial waters before signing on for the long haul. I expect this ridiculousness from Metallica, who hasn’t given a shit about their fans for going on two decades now.

I caught Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax a little while ago and was more than pleased as punch with that outing. I have no desire to pay for my ticket, airfare, lodgings, and other expenses to see that show again with Metallica; which was it’s main selling point.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Farhaad-Esfandiary/501309890 Farhaad Esfandiary

Hahaha. I saw RATM at Coachella and Rock the Bells too. Hell, I even went to Vegoose to see them just to make up for all the times I couldn’t see them as a teen.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Matthew-Kurtz/1493586117 Matthew Kurtz

I’m indifferent. I mean if this was in the south I’d go, but I’m not terribly disappointed. I’m actually more eager to hear the Mayhem lineup tomorrow

  • wv

there are many bands who deserve to be in the big 4 before anthrax. shame. no matter how many awesome albums a band like testament put out, they will be left out. no matter how mediocre and in shambles anthrax has been, they will always be in the big 4.

    • Dirtman73

Anthrax are always going to more well-known and appreciated as a band than Testament. Get the fuck over it.

      • wv

        anthrax sucks now. accept it.

  • Sandman

Big fucking woop…your playing one show that is within driving distance of 3 of the bands hometowns. Sure you’ll draw a nationwide audience of idiots with a disposable income but the majority of those that are there have seen these bands a gazillion times. At least do a small 4 – 6 show run that hits all parts of North America and allows all fans a chance to see it. I’ve been behind Metallica through all of it, but this is the most I feel they’ve let me down ever….same for the other bands on the bill. Big fucking let down.

Also, on one of the images for the show, it says the only time in the U.S….so this isn’t a test run, this is it.

  • Matt

Somehow this doesn’t bother me……Mainly because all these bands are wayyyyyyyy past their prime. Maybe 20+ years ago this would have been a big deal.

  • cougar party

I have two thoughts on this:

    1) I am thinking that perhaps there is not a huge demand or at least not huge enough to fill arena’s across the nation. The reason being that Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer have all toured the US in the last year. Maybe not enough people will come out for a full tour in major markets?

    2) More likely I think that their is a dispute regarding how the money gets split up. Metallica (and perhaps Slayer and Megadeth) can certainly make more money not having to split it with each other. Doing a whole tour would just end up making less money than if they just did the tour by themselves.

  • Mitch K.

good thing that 4 pretty much looks like a swastika! thanks for the design keerryyy

  • Frampler

I assume this is because they are all at the end of or well into touring cycles and didn’t want to undertake a massive tour across the US, so opted for a few shows in Europe and one relatively close to home for three of the bands. Commercially, I think a gimmick like the Big 4 shows loses some of its appeal if repeated too often, but they’re underplaying it by not at least doing a New York show too.

  • bufford

I went to Coachella in 2006, Indio, Ca is as hot as balls, their alcohol policy sucks too.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dorian-Legodick-Lafferre/1432620197 Dorian Legodick Lafferre

Fuck these old has-been farts. Build me that time machine. In the meantime, I’m gonna go watch Kvelertak.

    • Conrad

      +1 for KVELERTTAAAAAAAAAAKKKKKKKKKK

      • hez

        +1! <3

  • yzermantiis

Anthrax is the only one I’d like to see at this point. But even so……meh who cares???

  • Anthony

For a while Rumors were going around that it’d just be a 6-10 date tour in cities that Mayhem is not hitting since Megadeth is apparently on this year’s mayhem tour.

    But yeah…lame.

  • Spicer

I smell DVD sales, that’s why the one show

    • Anthony

We already have a Big 4 DVD. I mean, Metallica’s greedy, but I don’t think they’re THAT greedy.

      • Major Zim

It’s metallica, listen to yourself. do you think there is any level of petty greed they WONT go for? i highly doubt it.

        • Mike Owens

Yes, because giving fans FREE meet & greets at each every show along with a free download of the concert with each and every ticket — at prices that have remained the same since ’04 is really greedy.

Please, compared to the other bands who scalp their own tickets, hold back others for AmEx or Citibank presales, and hook up with LiveNation, Metallica are the darlings of the industry.

And FWIW – Metallica INSISTED on setting up a joint production company with the other three bands to release the DVD. They insisted; their label relented. The other bands were in line for a royalty check, but now they have an actual piece of the action. And if KK’s interview with Kerrang is to be believed, they made more money on the seven date run with Metallica than they did on two tours with Megadave.

          Yeah, Metallica…so greedy.

  • Erik

Fuck this. I don’t give a shit about these bands. The big 4? None of these bands are even close to relevant. I could see if you’re over 28 that this might seem cool but to me (22 yrs old) I’d rather spend 15 bucks on seeing agalloch in a small room in a couple months and save the other 85.

    • Major Zim

      Amen to that.

    • super_freak

Speak for yourself. I am 22 as well and I can say that Megadeth is musically one of the most exciting bands I have seen, all four of the times I have seen them they tore it down. But I do agree that this Big Four thing is No Big Deal. I don’t like Anthrax on a good day, and they haven’t had one of those is a long time, and I know there isn’t even a snowball’s chance in hell that Metallica will be worth watching. The Testament, Megadeth, Slayer tour last summer was definitely a better buy than this could ever be.

  • Kuranes

    I’ll go, that’s about 90 minutes from me :)

  • Major Zim

Fuck indio. As a Californian, i can safely say that place is fucking worthless. The official government road sign on the freeway literally says and i quote “Indio and other desert cities” THE FREEWAY SIGN. even the fucking road agencies dont give a shit about those fucking places. Im hard pressed to think of any possible tour that would get me to go all the fuckin way out there.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sanskar-Wagley/1376400331 Sanskar Wagley

No New York date is failure

  • Full Metal Life Jacket

I’d rather see Testament and Exodus, the Left Out 2.

  • poopy

limp bizket should open this show

      HAHAHAHAHAH

Hands down best comment I’ve ever seen on this website

  • moses valenzuela

For the people who say they haven’t been good since the 80′s. Good. You fuckers can stay the fuck home!!!!!!!! Us TRUE fans can enjoy it while you impotent bastards can relive on nostalgia.

    • Full Metal Life Jacket

This guy must be a true fan, he’s attacking our ability to achieve erections!

  • http://jimsfear.blogspot.com/ ferocious_fetus

I might be down for this. Might. Indio is kind of wack though. Found a nice place to stay in near by Palm Springs when I went to Coachella in 07. If anything I’ll try that place again.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Brian-Bearden/100001105796085 Brian Bearden

Fuck them fuckers. This shit’s been building forever….and yes…the bands were behind the blow-up to measure the interest….and then they blow ups away with 1 FUCKING SHOW. As I said….fuck ‘em. The whole goddamn world doesn’t exist in California. Suits the shit outta me. That’s $100 I won’t be sending their way.

  • Logan

I have money that says they won’t perform near Mississippi, we never get any good bands.

  • Keyboard

Metallica have been saying forever they want to take most of this year off, why would anyone think they’d do a major tour anytime soon? If they’re doing this tour it won’t be until 2012.

  • Dmuffin

I got up early today since I read the post from all four bands yesterday and they all said that they would announce tour DATES. Got up, logged into my Facebook and what do I see? ONE..FUCKING..SHOW.. WTF?!?!?!?! I’m trying to keep hope alive but the let down is just so big that I haven’t been able to listen to their music today.

Thanks guys, the metal community is PISSED and will kill anything in their path right now.

  • Mike

Two decades ago, I’d have gone cross-country for this. Now they’re playing at a venue I could almost walk to and I’m barely even acknowledging it. I’m sure this is great for some people but you’d be hard pressed to get me to care about the Big 4 today even if they were playing in my back yard, and I think there’s many who agree with me.

Also, why Indio? Why not go ~2 hours west for Los Angeles, or any number of other California cities that people actually care about?

    • Mike Owens

The venue was chosen because GoldenVoice is promoting. They had an open week between hipster shitfest and redneck shitfest. This one-off date happened because of that, nothing more…nothing less.

I do wish the bands would be a little more forthcoming about the additional shows. That said, Lars said on the radio today that this could lead to a handful of additional shows. So unless you’re an absolute sheep, don’t blow a mortgage payment on this concert.

  • Coward

You guys copied this from here, didn’t you?

    http://www.doseofmetal.com/2011/01/only-one-american-big-four-show/

  • Mason

…And just like that I have lost respect for all 4 bands.

  • http://multimedia-ami.deviantart.com amelia

The subtitle on that Big4 site you gave us tells it all…
“Together for the first and only time in the US”
It’s a means of making this super exclusive so they can pretend their still all that while being lazy.

  • DecrystallizingReason

Even if they’d done a full tour and had a show right in my hometown, I still wouldn’t have gone. Slayer is the only band out of the Big 4 that is still worth seeing today, in my opinion. One less tour for less financially secure metal bands to compete with.

  • Cladgemeister

Glad I live in England, only a 2 hour drive to the Festival they’re playing.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sara-Petrocelli/519197405 Sara Petrocelli

It is lame, but I can’t complain too much. I’m taking a road trip for this one. 4 hours in the car is fine by me.
