THE STEELERS ARE MORE METAL THAN YOU THOUGHT

240

Disclaimer: I do not care about football at all. I only know when the Superbowl is because my birthday lands right around that time and I remember hearing stories of how my dad had to be dragged away from the TV in the hospital waiting room to witness my glorious exit from my mother’s womb. And while I’ve played sports my entire life, I regard televised games with roughly the same amount of interest I devote to a Suicide Silence press release.

However, I DO care about Midnight, and Midnight apparently care a lot about the Pittsburgh Steelers. They care enough to re-record one of their best-loved metalpunk anthems, “Black Rock’n’Roll,” to reflect that love. Ladies and gentleman, I give you “Black and the Gold”:

No matter what your thoughts are on football or the Steelers (according to Twitter, one of the players is a rapist or something?), you just can’t argue with that kind of Venom-meets-Motorhead-inspired racket. Check the sweet Cronos cackle at the very end, too – pure class.

Midnight hail from Cleveland, OH, and have been churning out killer slabs of black thrashing punk metal madness and hocking loogies at the cross since 2003. Splits with the ungodly likes of Nunslaughter, Abigail, and Villains, wicked taste in cover songs (a fast-as-shit, primitive version of Girlschool’s “Watch Your Step?” Yes please.) and an unshakable fuck-you-punk attitude have cemented Midnight’s status as wickedly essential listening for those who like it fast and dirty and worship at the twin altars of Fenriz and Lemmy. They’re so rad that one of my favorite bands, blackened d-beat hooligans Hot Graves, named themselves after one of their songs.

Midnight’s most recent release, “Farewell to Metal Slut,” is a split 7” with Japanese blackthrash overlords Abigail and features a gnarly Quiet Riot cover – snag that shit from Outlaw Recordings, and keep your ear to the ground for news of new material.

And here’s Midnight’s original “Black Rock’n’Roll” —
