METALLICA WORKING ON… YAWWWWWWN… EXCUSE ME! METALLICA WORKING ON “SECRET RECORDING PROJECT”

Friday, February 11th, 2011 at 10:00am by

So what’s got the online metal community all hot n’ bothered today? Judging by my inbox, it’s this interview Kirk Hammett just gave to Rolling Stone, in which he claims the band will hit the studio in May:

“We want to record it in two weeks. We had planned on doing it in March, but we pushed it back to May. I don’t want to give too much away, but it’s not really 100 percent a Metallica record. It’s a recording project, let’s put it that way. Without getting too deep into it, it’s more a recording project than a bona fide Metallica album. Whether or not we can pull it off in just two weeks remains to be seen.”

So first of all, the members of the band are incapable of taking a piss in two weeks, so I can’t believe they’ll really record something, a “100 percent Metallica record” or otherwise, in that amount of time.

Second of all, whether this is a Metallica LP, or a Metallica EP, or Metallica just re-recording some shit for a greatest hits package, or some experimental side project, or whatever, it doesn’t matter, because it’s not gonna be worth getting excited about. You know how I know that?

So everyone just calm the fuck down. There’s a new Obscura record coming out on March 29. Why don’t you get excited about that instead? That’s actually worth getting your hopes up.

Totally agree. There is so many better albums coming out this year. Darkest Hour, Amon Amarth, Btbam, Explosions In The Sky, etc……..

    Obscura rules!

    • Cryzthormagnusian

Had not heard about a new Explosions In the Sky, thanks for the heads up.

    • esteban

WHO ISN’T EXCITED ABOUT A BRAND NEW UNFORGIVEN ALBUM FEATURING SONGS LIKE UNFORGIVEN IV THROUGH UNFORGIVEN X. Hell yeah

    • Slaughterhouse

The Faceless, Born of Osiris, All Shall Perish, maybe some new Machine Head

      • Ray Peterson212

^ my thoughts exactly. The new BOO is going to surprise a lot of people I think. Also All Shall Perish can put out songs of them taking shits and it would rule. I dont think youll see a new Machine Head this year though, they will put out a monster early next year. Rob Flynn is too anal to just put a record out, needs to make sure shit is right.

        • mike

          what are you talking about?

  • http://ametaleducation.blogspot.com/ Throne777

Well at least the trip to the studios will be a nice day out for them. I just hope they don’t forget their blankets and thermos flasks.

  • gauche

i bet they’ll really throw us a curve ball and do a covers album!

actually it’d be pretty cool if it was all Infectious Grooves songs.

    • My Balls, Your Chin

Lars can’t play the groovy shit that 16 year old did in that band. it’d be comical though to see him try!

  • i am become death

id like to see them work with a producer like zeuss, andy sneap, or jason seucof.

  • Conrad

Can we, as a community, band together just to completely ignore anything that has to do with Metallica? I think most of us can agree that the band’s hay day ended with their eponymous release, and that everything since has been lackluster garbage. They’ve been riding the nostalgia wave for almost twenty years now, and it’s not going to stop unless, as a whole, we decide to stop investing our time, money, or attention on them.

I am completely aware and accept that I, in essence, lit a fire under the bridge; but I believe my point remains valid. Only we can stop this crap from continuing.

    • principlebeian

They had a HAY DAY? With farm animals and everything?

      • Type-O-Negative

        +1 (well played)

  • Chimp-O-Neg

I want to hear a little bit more Metallican and a bit less Metallicant, people!

    • esteban

Yah, I’m down for giving any new material a spin…. I admit though, I haven’t given St Anger any time at all lol. I completely skipped that album after hearing the first single and everything I’ve heard since has made me think I made the right decision.

    • Max

Yeah, I don’t see why people STILL hate Metallica after Death Magnetic. I’ll be the first to admit they sold out, and they lost touch with their fans long ago. But let’s not kid ourselves; Death Magnetic is a very different animal from the Black Album and the Loads, much closer to their classic albums. What’s done is done, and Metallica can never change the fact that they turned their backs on their fans. But the Metallica that we all know and love is back, more or less.

By the way, am I the only one who doesn’t hate the “Unforgiven”s? The riff at the beginning of “Unforgiven II” reminds me of “Little WIng” a little.

      • alex

        youre an idiot.

  • cougar party

I’m guessing cover album with guest musicians. And it will probably suck.

  • gnarlk

there’s a melvins live record coming out that will crush this and whatever obscura’s supposed to be…

    • Darnel0tron

      Don’t fuck with Obscura, bro.

      • Clint

Why? What would happen if you were to fuck with Obscura? Maybe you’d get bored halfway through, your dick would go limp, and you’d go read a book instead?

  • WowWee!

I can’t wait for the next The Unforgiven!!!!

  • ZackP

    Who in the fuck cares?

  • dedseed1

    meh-tallica. yawn indeed.

  • Alec29

Probably gonna be a Metallica dubstep album. LOL

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tony-Manka/100000083183511 Tony Manka

now that would actually halfway interesting!

  • Jay

What is yawn-inducing is your always-boring display of hate for one of the three greatest metal acts of all time. I consider “My World” and “Until it Sleeps” five star songs. The unforgiven songs and “I Disappear”, not so much…but oooh, they have a few clunkers in their catalog!!! So does Maiden, so does Sabbath, so does Priest, so does Dio. I know you are just stirring the pot, but we are all grateful for the wonderful music that Metallica has given us, admit it or not.

    • fritz

Speak for yourself dude. I for one am not grateful for the music Metallica has given us, because aside from RtL and half of MoP it’s been pretty bad.

      • Ab

wow turn in your metal card now….pretty bad huh….wow

        • i am become death

          he so kvlt

  • Hot Donut

I wonder if it has anything to do with the tour they talked about last year, which they said was the Metallica equivalent of “The Wall”

    http://www.nme.com/news/metallica/50260

  • ap6693a

mastodon, opeth, meshuggah, and tool are all also working on new albums. im excited for a new metallica release, but even more so for these other bands. they are all still putting out new and exciting music. don’t hate on metallica though!

  • Kyle

Whether you want to get excited or not about this news is up to you, but, since this news has seen the light of day on MS, it is worth noting that Lars has been saying recently the band is gearing up to record a full-fledged album in March or April. So, he and Kirk obviously need to get on the same page:

    http://www.nme.com/news/metallica/54793

  • Dingas McCloud

They need something to sell on the “Big 4″ non-tour.

    • Dirtman73

Yep, they obviously can’t sell their musicianship anymore.

  • The Big One

    Trivium > Metallica

ANY FUCKING DAY OF THE CENTURY.

    That is all.

    • i am become death

      trivium sucks a big one

      • dave

most of the time they are sucking metallica’s big one

    • Anthony

Well Shogun was better than anything Metallica’s released since the Black Album so i’ll give them that.

      • Clint

Nope. Wrong. Shogun was worse than anything anybodys released. Ever.

  • Spanky

“The world will find a way to survive without ‘The Unforgiven IV.’”

Yeah…it’s still the best thing ever written on this website

  • Dieing Feetis

Maybe they’re just gonna go back and rerecord St. Anger so it doesn’t suck balls quite as much.

  • Zack

Holy Shit, that My World song may be the worst thing I have ever heard….never heard it until right now…I wish that was still the case…OOOF

  • Andy Synn

    Awww….

Unforgiven 2 is pretty much my favourite Metallica song.

    • Darnel0tron

Yeah, I love that song too.

  • moforuss

Yeah,But all you fuck heads know who metallica are dont you.Keep listening to your shit noise bands you dill weeds.

    • Dirtman73

You know, since the only people that feel the need to defend Metallica anymore are burnt-out greasers who don’t listen to anything but Kill ‘Em All and Bark At The Moon, I would have to assume you’re in that particular bracket. Therefore, I would have to assume you’ve never heard any of the “shit noise bands” you hate so much. Bands which, by the way, blow Metallica out of the water nine out of ten times.

Your opinion is as invalid as your crippled, meth-addicted girlfriend.

      • Clint

No Metallica….no “shit noise bands”. Period.

  • meemperor

    KILL’EM ALL RE-RECORDED WITH DAVE MUSTAINE….

    On vocals?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Glenn-Pillsbury/641369365 Glenn Pillsbury

Good job of not getting in least bit excited about this little news tidbit, MS. Oh, you’re not “happy” excited but you couldn’t let it pass, could you? hahahahahahahahhh

  • steverazor

Once great band reduced to utter crap. St. Anger was mailed in. Death Magnetic is unlistenable. Load and ReLoad are aptly named. I defended these guys after the Black Album when old-school fan unrest began to bubble to the surface; but I can’t defend any moves after Garage Days Re-Revisted. Their legacy has been tarnished forever.

  • Clint

I just love the idea of someone who listens to Obscura taking a shit on Metallica. In other words: OBSCURA……..YYYYAAAAAWWWNNNN……nice try though, Metal Sucks contributor. You get a million D-bag points for your fake “under ground cred”.

  • yzermantiis

    Bitter, your table is ready!

  • shpostal

While I agree the first three albums were thrash classics and essential, “And Justice For All” was poorly produced and arranged. However, when “Metallica” sold 15 million albums and the band became multi-millionaires, that fact I don’t begrudge them, I grew tired of listening to Hetfield’s piss and moan lyrics. Being richer than he’ll ever be able to comprehend is fine, but I don’t buy the poor pitiful suicidal me shtick for one second. How you can be that fucking miserable and be on top of the metal world tells me either you’re a hypocrite or you need help. If you’re trying to pass yourself off as a misguided confused teenage headbanger, that dog ain’t hunting, either. Either go with the political lyrics of old or historical such as in “Creeping Death” or call it a day. The more attention we have to pay to you just takes that precious time away from up and comers who need the press and money a lot more than anybody in Metallica does.

    • Clint

“That dog ain’t hunting”, huh? GET-R-DONE shpostal! No, really. Get-r-done.

  • http://Www.myspace.com/theseventhasylum Matt

Funny the guy that wanted to band together and ignore anything metallica didn’t take the chance to ignore this one…… Typical

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Brandon-Cunningham/100000167213200 Brandon Cunningham

metalsucks i think its time to retire the jokes on metallica….we get it you hate them now. but when you bash them like this, it comes off as bitter and unfunny.

  • Dave

Please Metallica..I beg of you. Stop making shit; er I mean music. Hard rock music that is because you haven’t made a metal album in 20 years. You have made billions already. Enough is enough. Disappear into obscurity.

In other news..has anyone heard the new Onslaught CD? The best shit I’ve heard this century. Absolutely fucking brilliant.

  • Dakotaw

Hopefully this will be more like Alcohollica instead of Shitallica.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Juan-Jimenez/1313838369 Juan Jimenez

As long as it doesn’t sound like Death Magnetic or Kill Em All, I’ll give it a listen.

  • Choronzon

I see you still have sand in your vagina!!

  • pigchop
  • yzermantiis

I’d have to agree, Shogun wasn’t very good

  • http://multimedia-ami.deviantart.com amelia

HEY! I have a great idea!
Why don’t we just pretend they broke up after …And Justice for All/Black Album?
I think we’d all be happier: no more Metallica shit from MS or from Metallica.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/David-Mollica/9373117 David Mollica

Wow, this set of comments sound like a bunch 12 year old youtube hate. St. Anger was dog shit, everyone knows it, stop being butthurt. Death Magnetic, besides that one song from it Axl posted, which does kind of such, is a great album.
