IT’S HERE! IT’S HERE! THE FREE DEVIN TOWNSEND LIVE EP IS FINALLY HERE!

Monday, February 14th, 2011 at 11:30am by

Devin Townsend’s free live EP was supposed to come out a couple of weeks ago, and then it was supposed to come out last week, and it didn’t. But it’s out now! It turns out that Devy just wanted to give us all a special Valentine’s Day present. How romantic, Devin! As though we don’t collectively suck the guy off here at MetalSucks anyway.

But I digress.

The album can be downloaded here. (It’s super slow right now, I’m assuming because everyone and their mother is currently trying to download this thing.) You have to either tweet or post about the EP on your Facebook page in order to get it, but that’s not so bad because a) the message you share with your friends can actually say whatever you want it to, so you don’t have to sound like a total tool, and b) it’s Devin Townsend, so it’s not like you’re whoring for some hack or whatever.

So, uh, enjoy!

damn it. facebook and twitter? im not 13.

    • Kuranes

Don’t worry, you’ll get there some day little fella.

      • AetherJake

        i lolled

  • Conrad

I love Townsend as much as the next guy, but how the Hell did he get addicted to pornography when his dick has been in a rotation of fan boys’ mouths since 1997?

    We must give lousy head.

    • Strapping Young Lad

      I can only blame myself…

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ben-Robson/1375985482 Ben Robson

    beastly.

i’m a little disappointed that Disruptr isn’t on the EP, since it was in the setlist for that tour. i remember that song kicking monster ass when I saw DTP live, so it would be nice if it made it onto the EP, but whatever, i can’t complain about awesome free music.

    • Strapping Young Lad

For some reason, I just can’t get into that song. and I LOVED Ki… To be fair, it was pretty sweet live. I think Super Crush sounds a lot better live without the girl singing. I don’t mind her at all, but when I listen to a Devin Townsend record, I wanna hear Devin Townsend, dammit!

  • Sacajawea

Fuck Facebook. Fuck Twitter. End transmission.

      120000

    • Aaron R A

Holy shit, you guys sure are tough and manly. How can I be more like you?

      • Sacajawea

It’s not about being manly. I’ve done many girly things in my life. It’s more about how “social networking” has more less destroyed people’s social lives. I know people that come over to my house and then spend the entire duration of their visit with their iPhone in their faces because they are either Twittering or Facebooking with people they do not personally know. It’s good to know I’m that unimportant to my friends and family.

        • Sacajawea

          *more OR less*

Really though, it’s fine if people like it, but I wish things didn’t have to be Twitter/Facebook exclusive and don’t think that people need to use it so much that they become rude like my friends and family.

          • Isaac

Let them know that they’re being dicks, then. I have a friend like this and I make him cut down on that shit when we’re hanging out.

        • davemon21

Because posting mildly coherent ramblings about the shattering of social life on a WEBSITE doesn’t automatically make your argument moot?

          • Vinsanity

not really. i agree with this guy. im tired of the social networking and all this shit making us socially autistic. i get on this site to read about metal, which is my fav thing ever perhaps, and to see what like minded people think about it. however, this site is a zillion times less involved than a thing like facebook or twitter. hey guys, im taking a crap right now!!!! omg its a big one….

If I were new to Devin, where would I start?

    • Type-O-Negative

probably right here since it’s free. that or youtube.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ben-Robson/1375985482 Ben Robson

easiest album to start with would probably be Accelerated Evolution since it’s the most straightforward. Infinity is his weirdest album if you’re into crazy stuff. you can’t go wrong with any of his releases, really, except Physicist because the production is really annoying.

    • el fucko

jump right into either Strapping Young Lad “City” or “Alien” or Devin Townsend “Ocean Machine”. But “Ki” is definitely worth checking out as well.

      • Matt

You start with “City.” After that, everything else is a piece of cake.

    • Rachel

Oh my…. hmmmm I think I would have to know what kind of stuff you already listen to and already like, because all of his albums are soooo diverse. Ben gave some good guidlines, already. In my opinion, Accelerated Evolution, Physicist, Ocean Machine: Biomech, and Addicted are the most straight-forward albums. Infinity, Terria, Ziltoid the Omniscient, Ki, and Synchestra are really proggy/crazy. Aside from this, check out Alien from SYL, which is ridiculously heavy.

  • Cryzthormagnusian

  • Matt

But in all seriousness I do love some devin townsend

  • WowWee!

Thank you Mr. Devin Townsend! Please come back to Las Vegas when you tour again!

  • el fucko

His banter on this EP is fucking hilarious.

  • Girth Brooks

finally!!!! very happy. this will be the ear-bleach i need to wash away the grammy bullshits.

  • David

Is that “Bat-Boy” from the Enquirer? I was wondering what ever happened to that kid.

Every day, I’d see his ugly mug one the front page, waiting in line at the checkout counter. Then…he just disappeared.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ben-Robson/1375985482 Ben Robson

there’s a musical about him. it’s highly entertaining.

  • Ross

I can’t wait til June(?) when the other albums are due…his voice is so badass!

  • sYgnal

I dig this officially, legitimately free EP and I don’t wanna sound like I’m complaining…but… Why couldn’t he have made these tracks available in FLAC? And, they are 192Kbps…UGH!!

With all due respect, Mr. Townsend, you should’ve consulted Steven Wilson. Not all of us Metalheads are iTards, a lot of us grasp the concept of lossless audio & the benefits it has to progress digital music. Especially cool shit like this. Such a pristine live recording… Just sayin:)

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ben-Robson/1375985482 Ben Robson

you’re seriously insinuating that Devin Townsend should have asked for Steven Wilson’s seal of approval before releasing a promotional live EP for free? the audio quality is fine. it’s not like you’re listening to an amateur recording of someone’s basement band practice. if 192kbps mp3 isn’t good enough quality to placate you, you are simply too picky.

      • sYgnal

“If 192kbps mp3 isn’t good enough quality to placate you, you are simply too picky.”

Too Picky?? It’s not like I asked for 96kHz / 24Bit DVD-A audio quality… For fucks sake man, do you listen to anything outside of your iPod? Yes, 192Kbps sounds rather shitty on proper loudspeakers. And, the only reason I mentioned Steven Wilson is because he has had great success with his solo stuff being offered in FLAC (not for free). So, considering that (imo) Devin is just starting to gain a wider audience for his solo work like Mr. Wilson has & that FLAC is still very new to a large portion of people, that Steven could offer up some advice… Not a seal of approval.

By the way… get a grip.

        • Adam

In fairness, I don’t think you realize that a MAJORITY of the music listening population does NOT listen to said music on “proper loudspeakers”.

I keep hearing more and more about how albums are now being mixed more for earbud heaphones than for “good speakers” because who actually listens to music that way anymore? You listen at the gym, in the car, at work, on the bus… in all these cases, 192 is quite certainly sufficient.

Oh yeah, and if I had every album on my hard drive at 100% lossless audio quality (or just 320 kbps), I’d need a HELL of alot more hard drive space. Not to mention downloading album rips at several hundred megabytes each vs about 80mb for one album… that’s bandwidth, hard drive space AND time I’m saving. 192 is a good compromise between audio quality and filesize. Many of us can’t be bothered to invest in huge hard drives and awesome speaker systems.

          In conclusion: quit yer bitchin!

          • sYgnal

            “In conclusion: quit yer bitchin!”

I know, huh? No one should ever speak their mind & be passionate about something, right? Did ya know that a MAJORITY of the listening population doesn’t listen to Devin Townsend or to, mostly, any of the shit you hold dear. Actually, if we went by the MAJORITY on anything you wouldn’t have that computer in your mom’s basement never mind HDD space to store your shitty Mp3s.

See, this is the problem here. You got way too many people, like yourself, who talk out their ass when they don’t know jack shit about the topic at hand but feel superior. Music isn’t being mixed for headphones! Music is being mixed just fine, for the most part, it’s just that CD technology is over 30 years old and the bandwidth has been exceeded. So, even though it is 1411Kbps @ 16bit, you’re still getting a compressed end product. AND.. Due to the fact that we’re losing an art form to a new generation of ignorant consumers who only want convenience, the opportunity to progress audio quality (SACD / DVD-A) was squandered.

But, this was beyond my point. I was merely mentioning that people like Steven Wilson, in regards to a similar style of music, has a valid experience with offering a fantastic format. It would have been cool to get this newly released material in FLAC & because Devin gave love to those who supported him by buying his work, that I think people would’ve paid for said release if it was offered up as lossless.

But, that’s right, I can’t voice my opinion because it easily offends the fucking fanboys on this site… *sniff, sniff*

          • sYgnal

Actually, if we went by the MAJORITY then Metal, probably, wouldn’t exist… I’m almost the list could continue for things that wouldn’t be here if we followed the MAJORITY.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ben-Robson/1375985482 Ben Robson

uhhm. nobody said you can’t voice your opinion. we are simply voicing our own, dissenting opinions. if devin himself has no issue with the audio quality of the music he is offering, i don’t see why you should. he’s not trying to make money off of a shitty product – he openly acknowledges that all of his music is freely obtainable on the internet. if he wanted to put the music for sale in FLAC format, he would have done so.

          • sYgnal

“uhhm. nobody said you can’t voice your opinion.”

So, I guess, “Quit yer bitchin” means something different in your dictionary, right?

It wouldn’t have been any harder to convert the tracks to FLAC instead of Mp3. So, I’ll keep pressing the issue at every turn because I want to hear the music I enjoy in better quality. If you’re perfectly happy with an inferior product then ignorance is truly bliss…

            Adios…

          • AetherJake

Goddamn, I know it was valentines day and all, but get a room.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ben-Robson/1375985482 Ben Robson

people settle for less than the best possible quality all the time. not everyone drives porsches. not everyone eats at five star restaurants every day. not everyone had a fifty inch HD television with surround sound speakers. not everyone gets front row seats and backstage passes. we make do anyway and have fun doing it. if you’re so unsatisfied with 192 kbps mp3 quality that you cannot enjoy music that you would otherwise, i’ll say it again: you’re too picky. you can PREFER flac, but to expect every artist to start releasing music in an unfamiliar format is pretty absurd.

i listen to Porcupine Tree on an ipod through $20 Phillips headphones i bought at a drugstore. no, the quality of the sound is not perfect. guess what? Porcupine Tree still kick ass, and i can still clearly hear that. whatever infinitesimal elements are lost in translation do not mar my listening experience because the music still affects me in the same way that listening to a higher quality WAV or FLAC would.

          • sYgnal

Yea… But people still know there is a discernible difference between Porches, 5 star restaurants, front row seats & whatever it is that they settle for. And, if you didn’t think there was any further enjoyment gained from better quality then you wouldn’t go see a concert. 8 years ago people said the same shit about HD TVs, DVD vs. VHS but it always ends up mattering in the long run. I mean, look at people now purchasing bigger headphones for their Mp3 players. Please, man, it may not matter to you, but, that’s only because your uninformed and set in your ways.

The fact of the matter here is that FLAC isn’t the BEST possible quality, it’s is just a better alternative to Mp3 and it doesn’t take a rich man or enthusiast to take advantage of it. FLAC actually stands for “Free Lossless Audio Codec” which means it might actually save Devin some money from having to pay for LAME encoding and at the same time it gives the consumer a better product / experience.

It just amazes me that, nowadays, people pay almost just as much money for an Mp3 album as they did for a CD. Yet, the Mp3 album is only a quarter the quality as the CD. So, the only thing you’re settling for is getting ripped off.

          • AetherJake

A concert usually has much worse quality sound. Just food for thought.

          • sYgnal

“A concert usually has much worse quality sound”

It depends on the band & venue and what they use for equipment. If they have the “who cares” attitude that seems to be gaining popularity then I might agree with you. But, even so, you’re hearing the music in its natural element. You can’t get any better than a live experience for music.

I think what people get mixed up is the Wow factor vs. accuracy.

          • AetherJake

I agree that the concert experience is much more fun. But the sound is almost never more clear live than on recordings.

  • Poopenshaft

Does that picture of DT remind anyone else of this?

lol, where is that pic from? what movie?? looks awesome

It is actually part of the film clip to Come To Daddy by Aphex Twin.

    • Mattman

Hah!! Awesome, I remember that video and CD. Scarred me for life when I was young! Come to think of it, Devin should get together with Richard James, it would be the most skullmurderingly insane album ever.

But actually, I initially thought “Devin, WATCH OUT!! Blade’s right behind you!”

The older Devin gets, the more he becomes the bad guy from Blade II.

  • hater_guy

If you just go to http://www.youtube.com/user/00Amygdalan00#p/u you can check all 5 live tracks.
