THE LATEST METAL MICRO-GENRE BASTARDIZATION: DUBSTEP + DJENT = DJENTSTEP

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011 at 12:00pm by

I’m still not clear exactly what the fuck dubstep’s got to do with metal other than that some schmo with neck tattoos and some other schmo that Sergeant D likes got together and formed a dubstep group. But apparently dubstep is gaining legs in the metalsphere, probably because deathcore kids realized deathcore is dumb and are seeking something way more alternative, yo.

The latest evolution of the micro-genre as it relates to better comes from reader Tony Manka in the form of Aeolia, who describe themselves as “djentstep.” Take a listen:

So it’s basically drum n’ bass with djent riffs over top. We need this… why? It’s not bad by any means but it just strikes me as unnecessary and forced, like trying to invent a new kind of sandwich; I liked the old sandwiches just fine, thanks.

Shitty bands like Brokencide, Bleed Dakota or 3LOL!3 (or whatever the fuck the bands that do the dub-step/krunkcore garbage are called) are going to harvest this to give their gimmicks another year of life and lots of money from dumb scene kids.

    • Bayon

What settings on an amp do you have to use to make a djent sound?

    • 1122334455

They are making more money than you.

This is a combo that makes total sense. Both genres are about groove, so why not combine them. I think once you get someone that can write better riffs trying this it will be a lot more interesting.

Try The algorithm for something kind of in the same vein.

  • MonochromicSound

At least to me, it seems to lack the appeal of either dubstep or djent.

  • John

Djent is dumb, dubstep is a trend blah blah blah

      so it will be HUGE.

It sounds more like a mashup than a full product but it’s got potential. Metal has crossed over into the electronic world before and had good results, and this makes sense since every major djent artist seems to be a dubstep fan.

    • http://myspace.com/msrp Nic Heidt

That was my feeling exactly. It just sounds really half-assed, not bad. If a well written song was done in like this it could be kinda neat.

      • Vinsanity

ya. as far as dub step goes, it has the most promise over any other electronic form because it is highly variable in tempo and has more room for creativity. my buddy let me listen to a dubstep lamb of god song yesterday, and i must say, i actually liked it. dubstep is a trend, but it has great potential. of course the masses wont ever break into quality dub steppers. nor have i. but i dont think its there yet. however, metal is all i need.

        • FalconKick

Dubstep has to be right around 140 BPM or else it isn’t dubstep. That doesn’t sound variable in tempo to me.

  • soy el niño más bonito

i was interested until the fucking wobble bass came in.

    • Strapping Young Lad

HAHA! yeaa, that is unfortunately a big part of dubstep. I agree, it sounds dreadful.

The description says that this is a little side project creation of someone from a djent band called Aeolia from Texas, probably the same?

i just looked them up on reverbnation and it is them. they were cool dudes and they were pretty good, but thats prolly cause it was not dubstep

This came out 15 years ago in the form of them mortal combat soundtrack. This is fucking retarded.

    • ceth carter

I was just about to post and say, wasn’t this around when we were a lot younger and just called something else. Werent there a lot of industrial type metal bands doing this same thing mid/late 90′s. Mortal Combat soundtrack is a perfect example of this like you said. Isnt this just a more tech version of KMFDM????

      • http://giantofthemountain.bandcamp.com Lordassenfroth

its Kombat with a K, guys.

It is It’s with an apostrophe and also a capital I when starting a sentence of with it if we want to be spelling and grammar police when we have no other point to make. +++++ 1×1

          • Bayon

It is “It’s” with quotations when you are using material from someone else’s comment and also a set of quotations is needed around the “I” in order to distinguish you are talking about a subject and not just spouting pronouns. On top of that, your entire statement is one giant run-on sentence that causes one’s cognitive process to fumble for any logical meaning. If we want to be grammar police when we have no other point to make, then we can do so.

  • Jay-P

Fuck this pile of shit, i’d rather go back and listen to Abigors – Fractal Possession if i wanted beats and metal

  • AetherJake

I feel like this would be really cool if it was just more well written and recorded. Like if Misha and Tosin got together and puts something like this together.

    • Tugboat

      That would be epic.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tony-Manka/100000083183511 Tony Manka

defiantly not the best song in the world especially for metal snobs, but I like the idea and thats why i had to share it. I’m sure more of this will come out sometime that will be ALOT better. try algorithm if you’re interested, if you’re not, go about your metal lives and sorry for the dubstep disturbance haha

  • Jamison

it’s neither good “djent” music, nor decent dub-step. If applied correctly it could be crushing, but can’t suck and be as straightforward as this.

  • Max

    It sounds like toothpaste.

Will Dubstep be the next trend that scene hipsters will like? I mean I like Dubstep alot but
    scene kids ruin everything.

  • SourDeez

I’ve been expecting this shit for a while, and it’s predictably boring. There is a dubstep group called Substep Infrabass that are influenced by death metal, but without literally sampling riffs. They play straight up dubstep, it’s just really dark. Way better than this shit.

  • Isaac

Oh god, it’s two retarded semi-underground fads combined. Baby Jesus help us.

  • David

There’s no room for drumkit from hell crash cymbal abuse in a dubstep mix, so clearly they can’t make in djenty.

Most (especially older) dubstep has quite a lot to do with space, ala Skream and Burial and all that, whereas djent is all about being rhythmically dense, and the new stuff is mostly dance music. It might work with the Culprate-style crazy shit though.

I would like to see someone incorporate SLAMZ into dirty-ass Doctor P/Excision/Datsik style dubstep though. Sampled, pulled basslines, sub-bass added, LFO added, something. It’s wigger enough, I think it would work.

  • Suraj

This just seems like a mashup between wecamewithbrokenteeth and some Cloudkicker demos. I’m not saying playing with genres is a bad thing, but I say it only works if done right. I mean, I could see some Burial-and-Chimp Spanner-influenced music sounding pretty great, but not while people still have skewed views of either genre, i.e. “dubstep is all about the drop son”, “djent is only good if you copy After the Burial’s first album note for note”, etc.

  • TNBM

Ever heard of the Opeth dubstep song? Well more like the Black Rose Immortal riff. Quite good actually a for metal meets dubstep song.

  • Skanes

FUCK. FUCK. FUCK. FUCK. ME AND MY BUDDY WERE TALKING ABOUT CAPITALIZING ON DJENTSTEP MONTHS AGO. FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

I actually made this, Im the guitarist of Aeolia, and i honestly did half ass this, i got bored and this happened because i was curious for a first attempt at this sort of mixup. Also our band Aeolia has no dubstep in it whatsoever so just to clear that up, and i appreciate the feedback, and all constructive criticism.

    What a load of bollocks

Look at pitchshifter fear factory and as said before Mortal Kombat soundtrack its been done before in one way or another but with better music.

Why ruin some good metal with some absolute shit.

  • Broken Sticks

Haha pretty underwhelming; I reckon it won’t be long before crab-djent crawls out. I linked this page to my post on “micro-genre bastardization.”
