BLACK METAL HISTORY MONTH CONTINUES! RECOMMENDATIONS FOR GOOD BANDS, AND A LIST OF HORRIBLE ATROCITIES

black metal history month

I hope you’ve been following Metal Injection’s incredibly funny (and shamelessly insensitive) Black Metal History Month — there’s been a ton of great shit, all of which you can catch up with by going here.

The latest reasons to get stoked on this brilliant, brilliant idea comes in the form of two awesome lists:

  • “Top 10 Worst Crimes Committed by Black Metal Musicians,” which was compiled by Graham “Gruhamed” Hartmann. This is a nice stroll down black metal history’s memory lane, or, if you prefer, a very abbreviated version of the book Lords of Chaos. You know the musicians in this genre have done some horribly fucked-up shit when church burnings and sexual assault with a tattoo gun didn’t even crack the top five.
  • “Top 10 New Black Metal Bands You Should Know,” which was compiled by our friend Atanamar Sunyata, who also runs the totally excellent blog Sunyata — Mindful of Metal. Some of the bands on the list are great (Krallice, Castevet) and some of them are, uh, let’s say not for me (I don’t care what Grim Kim says — if anyone ever asks me “Hey, wanna listen to some Dispirit?”, the answer is always “No.”), but Atanamar is a really smart dude, so it’s worth it to give the list careful consideration.

Like I was saying, you can check out both of these posts, and all of Metal Injection’s other Black Metal History Month goodness, right here. Whether you’re an old fan of the genre or just trying to educate yourself, you will find plenty of entertaining stuff.

They do have a point: if it wasn’t for a friend of mine saying “Dude this guy burnt a church down and killed a guy!”, my 14 year-old self wouldn’t have bothered checking out Burzum

    • Rik

If it wasn’t for burning a church down and killing a guy (okay, mostly the killing a guy), I might have bothered checking our Burzum.

      • cocksucker

If it wasn’t for church, I might have bothered checking out Burzum and killing a guy(okay, mostly the killing a guy).

If it wasn’t for killing a guy and burning Burzum, I might have bothered checking out a church.

          • El Peras

If it wasn’t for Burzuming a check, and having a Transilvanian Hunger, I wouldn’t have bothered killing a Necrophagist

Black Metal IS a horrible atrocity. Sounds like shit and is made by subhumans. Based on those two observations, it has a lot in common with Glam Rock.

    • death to bro metal

Sorry my friend but you are horribly misinformed but we’ll excuse your ignorance.

I find black metal tolerable. I’m a fan of Goatwhore and that’s because they put on the best SOUNDING live show I’ve heard from Black Metal artists. Watain on the other hand is a joke. Saw Goatwhore opening for Watain and I’d have to say that Watain only knew how to start a pit and give a light show (For light show,See-Korn). Their music isn’t appealing and every time I listen to them, it seems like I’m forcing myself to. Black Metal isn’t the best sub-genre in the world, but it does help you get over your “HAIL SATAN!” stage of life.

Definite yes to Altar Of Plagues. Phenomenal music, massive artistic scope.

Plus Lightning Swords Of Death – were a real surprise. Dark, heavy sound on “The Extradimensional Wound” whih was a pleasant shock.

If I were registered I’d add Iskald to the list, just because I’m confident of their awesomeness.

  • Joe

Ipsissimus fucking rule. They put on a great live show too. STOKED for The Way of Descent to come out!!!

  • Moltanic

This just made my day. It gives me more reason to laugh at these Scandinavian basement dwellers.

    • Brock Sterns

You have to be quite the pathetic douchebag for something like that to make your day.

      • Moltanic

I think cultural differences are funny. Over here in the states the mentally handicapped get put in special ed and in Norway they give ‘em some makeup and an instrument, and tell’ em to “go nuts”.

        • El Peras

WoW! You’re clearly a connoisseur of the Scandinavian Health Care System, you also forgot to mention how every funeral requires a Drakkar.

  • El Peras

Man…I ended up in Burzum’s official web reading about his band, criatura.

Why is it that when Vince Neil gets someone killed he’s a subhuman piece of shit but when a black metal musician does it’s glorified? Black metal is kinda like gangsta rap for nerds…..

    • Faulty

Vince Neil is a subhuman piece of shit anyway. Not that these black metal dudes are any better.

  • Logan

I still say that they should run an article on enslaved.

  • steverazor

I have a morbid fascination for Black Metal (and I enjoy most of the genres of metal). Powerful, hateful, and anti-christian; it is a definite guilty pleasure and a catharsis.

    the new Helrunar is good

  • Isaac

Wow. Wrest is a sick fuck. Hope he fuckin’ rots.

  • Kathy

I hope you guys have mentioned the Lemmy documentary! http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=t-_Ol3XT6F0

  • Perpetual Black Screen Name

Even though I knew of most of the crimes listed in the first article, it made me sick. That area of the metal community is full of fucked individuals. Varg’s a piece of shit and in my opinion, Euronymous was equally as whacked in the head. I don’t doubt for a second that he struck first. Regardless of these atrocity’s and pretty much any redeeming qualities whatsoever, black metal truly is an art. It’s a shame that shit like this makes everything about it look bad.

  • Little Earth

There is a lot of good black band in europe…

  • MadetheSame

“Silencer’s Nattramn Attacks 5-year-old with Axe” Was a new one for me.

Never heard of that guy. If true, that deserves the crown of black metal cruelty.

Sorry Axl, but I gotta say you’re completely missing out on the Dispirit thing: Definitely one of the best live bands I’ve ever seen!
