THE DUDE FROM INTO ETERNITY IS NOW THE DUDE FROM ICED EARTH, TOO

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011 at 12:00pm by

I’ve never really been an Iced Earth fan. Which is why, despite a ton of e-mails from Iced fans who were sad that Matt Barlow recently announced he is leaving the band for the second time (following their European tour this summer), I did not write anything about it. I had nothing to say. Sorry.

I am, however, a huge fan of Into Eternity. So I guess now that their singer, Stu Block, is the new front man for Iced Earth, I’ll have to start paying attention to both bands. Actually, the last time I saw Into Eternity live, they were opening for Iced Earth, so, yeah, this makes sense I suppose.

While Into Eternity just announced a new drummer last week, we still have no idea when the band will release another new album — it’s been three years since 2008′s The Incurable Tragedy. But I’m glad Block found a gig to occupy his time while Into Eternity guitarist/primary songwriter Tim Roth completes filming his lead role on the Fox series Lie to Me.

In case you’re not familiar with Block’s glass-breaking vocals, after the jump is the video for Into Eternity’s “Severe Emotional Distress.” You should really just know this song anyway, ’cause it rules.

    Meh.

This is pretty cool! I saw Into Eternity open up for Dark Tranquility, and they fucking blew the roof off. And I also saw them open up for Megadeth, but that was outside, so there was no roof to blow off, but it was still awesome.

I’m from IE’s hometown and have shared the stage with them before. They just announced a local show and 3 or 4 more shows around here in April. Word has it that their label actually dropped them awhile ago though.

    • deanerhead

You probably shouldn’t use abbreviations when discussing these bands.

      • Slaughterhouse

Haha…I was just about to ask which IE he meant

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/David-Dobre/1525164231 David Dobre

          Probably Into Eternity.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Patrick-Arriola/100002131340820 Patrick Arriola

That’s a really good question. Which IE were you talking about?

  • Dave

    m.e.h.

  • SourDeez

Into Eternity is pretty cool, but not incredible. And Iced Earth hasn’t kicked a single ass since The Dark Saga.

    • Trux

I am sure you did not listen Something Wicked……

      oh well….

      • SourDeez

That’s the very album which caused me to lose all interest in Iced Earth. If anything, I think Horror Show is the more solid of their later releases.

  • nPHYN1T3

lol IE, the band is a rotating door, I’ve played with all of them and it’s just funny really. New line up? That’s weekly for IE, so members jumping ship isn’t exactly news there guys. I think I’m the only metal player around here that hasn’t been a part of IE’s line up ha thank god!

    • Slaughterhouse

Im assuming you mean Into Eternity from what you are saying because IE can stand for Iced Earth as well

      • nPHYN1T3

lol indeed, heh I didn’t even think about IE equating to both bands. What are the fucking odds lol

  • HoneydewWilkins

Very interesting. Huge Into Eternity fan, so I’m also curious as to whether Stu is still in the band or not.

Also, I would’ve posted the Timeless Winter video instead as an introduction, as I think even the band said they weren’t too happy with how Severe Emotional Distress turned out.

The guitarist (not Tim, but Justin) has confirmed that Stu will be splitting his time between both Iced Earth and Into Eternity. Or at least that’s what he tells me.

  • Frampler

“But I’m glad Block found a gig to occupy his time while Into Eternity guitarist/primary songwriter Tim Roth completes filming his lead role on the Fox series Lie to Me.”

    Sneaky.

  • Hatebringerrrrr

    Is that Evan Stone?

  • Aaron R A

Seems kind of odd that Iced Earth, a ridiculously over-the-top-patriotic band, would get a Canadian singer.

  • Beowulf

Hmm…. The new Iced Earth is gonna sound interesting, stupid question maybe, but is this official?

  • Cisco

Wow, Tim Roth the actor is not the guitarist for Into Eternity. No one caught that?

    • Andrew

Lol I was thinking that too as I read it.

  • sYgnal

I’m just tired of all these flat-out screamers with no real unique characteristics in their low end. Honestly, I’d rather hear Iced Earth with Øyvind Hægeland or even Arjen Anthony Lucassen at the helm. Tim Owens ruined it for me. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a fantastic singer, but, he didn’t fit with Iced Earth and I don’t think this guy from Into Eternity will either. Jon Schaffer has the right idea not to find a Barlow clone,BUT, he needs somebody that has a somewhat classic style combined with power.

Just my two cents. I still can’t wait to hear what it sounds like…

This is the first time I’ve heard about Into Eternity in a while. I loved them back in high school especially after I saw them open for Dream Theater in 07′, haven’t really listened to them in a while though, and they seem to have dropped off the metal scenes concious, probably because Incurable Tragedy kinda sucked. Shame, because I honestly thought they were gonna get bigger before that.

As for Iced Earth, never really been a huge fan. They have a couple awesome songs on each album and then everything else is meh imo, though the newest one didn’t even have a standout song as far as I remember. Maybe Stu will bring some new life to the band or whatever.

  • darkdragon

The two best Into Eternity albums are ones that Stu Block didnt sing on. Case closed.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Andrew-Coons/1468470158 Andrew Coons

This is weird. Iced Earth has some really good songs, but overall a lot of their music is meh at best (and that’s coming from a huge power/prog/thrash fan, who Iced Earth should be a staple for). I really like all of Into eternity’s stuff, both their older albums without Block and their new ones with him. They’re different, but both good. To have Stu sing for Iced Earth….I dunno. Like many have said, Iced Earth just sounds trite nowadays, and save a few choice songs, haven’t really had anything spectacular, sadly.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Patrick-Arriola/100002131340820 Patrick Arriola

Wait, so you purposely neglect writing about Iced Earth simply because you don’t like them. Yet you constantly write articles about what Limp Bizkit and the ICP are up to? How the fuck does that work?

    • Icewind666

Love the site and Axl…but i have to agree..WTF?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tom-Arquillo/100002159392127 Tom Arquillo

I am not too familiar with Into Eternity. But this guy sounds perfect for the old Iced Earth stuff. Maybe he will bring some balls to the group.

  • Joe

Well, I like IE, but John Schaffer has admitted he knows no music theory, which probably explains why all his songs sounds the same. Anyway, Into Eternity is cool and hope the new IE showcase the new singers talents.

I haven’t liked Iced Earth since the first time Barlow left, but I have anxiously been waiting for a new Into Eternity album. As long as Into Eternity keeps putting out music, I have nothing against this, and I agree with those who say that Stu could bring Iced Earth back to life.

  • Rob Fiasco

iced earth hasn’t been relevant in over a decade. they should just hang it up. they were at one point one of my favorite bands…..ripper was a mistake and I feel this will be too.

Into Eternity needs a new album. Iced Earth needs a nap.

I haven’t had much respect for Jon Schaffer since he kicked Tim Owens out of Iced Earth. Not because I’m a fan of Owens or anything, but the manner in which he was ousted was complete douchebaggery.

    • http://thatdevilmusic.net Scott W

I’ve only become a fan of Owens in the last year or so, but it was really fucked up how he found out that he was fired after the news already posted on Blabbermouth.

  • http://thatdevilmusic.net Scott W

This should be interesting. I wonder if they’ll let him incorporate any of his harsh vocals in to the songs?
