AMON AMARTH COVER… SYSTEM OF A DOWN?!?

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011 at 11:00am by

If you asked me to make some suggestions for bands Amon Amarth might want to consider covering, well, I don’t think it would ever occur to me include System of a Down on that list. I love both bands (in different ways, obviously), but when I think of giant bearded viking dudes, my mind doesn’t then go right to politically-minded Armenian-American alt-metal.

Which is probably why Amon Amarth wanted to cover SOAD in the first place! Their version of “Aerials,” from the latter band’s nu-classic Toxicity, will be available as a downloadable bonus track when fans purchase AA’s latest release, Surtur Rising, through any FYE outlet in America (here’s an order link in case you wanna get on that). The cover is now available on YouTube, and you can check it out below — it’s pretty sweet. They’ve managed to make the song sound simultaneously like no other Amon Amarth song, and JUST like an Amon Amarth song.

Surtur Rising, which ten different kinds of awesome, by the way, comes out March 29 (a week from today!) on Metal Blade.

Heard this about a week ago or so. I really like it, but there’s quite a few people (haters) who are raging over the fact that Amon Amarth covered SOAD.

    • Mordecai 9000

Which very disappointing, since SOAD are probably one of the greatest metal bands of recent history.

      • legato

        disappointing, yes, OMG.
am i the only one who thinks this was a terrible idea?
i think that the original vocals pretty much make up the song. take that away (and all its subtleties and raw emotions along with it), THEN jack it up with so much pointless teutonic testosterone and you’re left with a listless piece of crap.

tl;dr do not want. covers are NEVER the sum of its parts.

The original vocals do make the song, I will agree there, but Amon Amarth put their stamp on this track while still maintaining much of the feel of the original. As far as covers go, this one is pretty damn good.

        • Strahalov

you have a point there. I think it’s a pretty good COVER but I like this song better with the original vocals.

Not a bad cover by any means. Better than that piece of shit cover they did of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, that’s for sure.

Meh. Not as good as Entombed’s cover of Disturbed’s “Down With The Sickness.”

    • Stephen

if you are saying System of a down sounds like Disturbed in anyway, you are terribly wrong.

    • Brian

Where does one find this cover? that sounds awesome!

Learn to read the article. The answer is there!

        • Brian

Sorry…I wasn’t clear…my bad I was referring to the Entombed cover of “Down With the Sickness.”

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sean-Wright/1365416981 Sean Wright

It think it’s on the “Sweden Conquers North America Vol. 1″ compilation.

that album cover is insanely bad ass

  • http://thenumberoftheblog.com/ groverXIII

Yeah, this isn’t really new news, but Amon Amarth rocked the shit out of this cover. The clean vocals on the chorus were a bit of a surprise.

    • Andrew

      Completely agree.

  • Sacajawea

I love Amon Amarth, but am not a fan of SoaD. I wasn’t too keen on this cover, not because if my disliking of SoaD, but because I just found it to be mostly bland.

    • Sacajawea

      of*

  • Pahkmycah

This cover spawned from the fact that Johan performed karaoke of the song on the 70,000 Tons of Metal Cruise.

    • Lycanthrope

Good call – I was going to point this out if nobody else did

  • hyperkulturemia

    Way to rape a classic.

    • soup

your definition of classic intregues me, where can i find your dictionary?

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Austin-Pearl-Nutter/1418565949 Austin Pearl Nutter

This song is totally a classic. Deal with it.

  • unholyjuggalo666

They just made it sound a lot better, I like System but that’s how that song should of sounded

  • http://jimsfear.blogspot.com/ ferocious_fetus

I like SOAD’s first two records, I like Amon Amarth…I like this.

  • WowWee!

What better way to appeal to more metalheads than covering one of the most popular metal bands. I love both bands and I must say this is a good marketing move and they also love the song which makes it all good.

  • the benthic

    what? this is horrible.

  • Anthony

I’ll applaud for AA for doing something like this, but it’s just not that good.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jordan-Salfity/100001923261907 Jordan Salfity

Although I agree that the vocals were what made the original so unique, it is pretty awesome seeing a band like Amon Amarth pay tribute to System of a Down. Having bands cover Black Sabbath and Metallica songs are getting really old.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jake-Haras/1185944091 Jake Haras

I’m a big fan of both bands, and I absolutely love this cover. System had great vocals and all, but I often have a lot of fun doing their songs with growls. I find this cover to be very enjoyable.

  • Oldestfart

Awesome. *This* is a real cover – AA didn’t just play it, they added their style to great song, and made it better. I can’t stop listening it… :-)

  • alex

The original was better but this is still pretty good.

  • Jacob

I actually really enjoyed this. I applaud Amon Amarth for trying something like this.

System of a Down is not a metal band.

    • Pastor of Muppets

      U mad?

    • weedlegs

amen. fuck SOAD and this cover.

  • http://slayer cain

i was like waaat the fuck

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kelly-Howard/100000535722377 Kelly Howard

Finally a system of a down song I can tolerate.

  • Gtyler55

    That is sooo BADAZZ!!!!
