IT’S ALMOST APRIL, LET’S START ARGUING ABOUT THE BEST OF 2011 CRAP

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011 at 5:00pm by

A Hollywood shrink recently told The New Yorker that procrastination is “spurious form of immortality,” because it is “the ego’s way of claiming that it has all the time in the world.”

So I guess that the good folks at Noisecreep are living in the now, man, ’cause the year isn’t even 25% over yet, and they’re already compiling year-end lists.

The site has unveiled the first four songs on their “Top Metal and Hard Rock Songs of 2011 (So Far)” list, which they promise to continue to update throughout the year. And, uh, with all due respect to all of my friends who write for The ‘Creep, I’d say if these are the four best metal songs you’ve heard so far in 2011, you haven’t heard enough metal songs this year. I mean, don’t get me wrong, most of these songs are really good and they all come from respectable bands, but the best songs of the year so far? No, I don’t think so.

I won’t spoil the list for you, but you can check it out here. Then, of course, you should come back and argue about it. Just to get the ball rolling, I’ve posted my own personal list of five songs (I couldn’t keep to Noisecreep’s limit, sorry) after the jump.

1) The Human Abstract, “Antebellum”
2) Hate Eternal, “Haunting Abound”
3) Meek is Murder, “(null)”
4) Obscura, “A Transcendental Serenade”
5) Anaal Nathrakh, “Volenti Non Fit Iniuria”

I bet that makes you angry, don’t it?

‘new world shadows’ [omnium gatherum] must be on the best metal songs of 2011 list: there can be no argument!

  • Aaron

Anything off of Trap Them’s new one. Makes me want to attack people

    • Aaron

      Oh and Liturgy “High Gold.”

    • http://diggin-graves.blogspot.com/ The Fool

I’m sad I never gave these guys a chance before. I’ve been familiar with their name for years, but never checked them out. Darker Handcraft is really really good!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Eric-Patefield/1366422398 Eric Patefield

      1

  • MikeForbid

that list is pretty good but you forgot BTBAMs Specular Reflection

    • eric

hang on, we only got 6 min of that song

for all we know they might drop the ball with the rest of it!

      • sasquatch

Nah, it’s between the buried and me. As long as you like 12 minute jam sessions (I’m personally a huge fan) they never disappoint.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dan-Burton/784250631 Dan Burton

Can’t think what I’ve bought this year. Nothing’s really stood out too much for me yet.

I guess the album closer ‘Symbiosis’ on Crowbar’s new one. ‘Heavy Black Snow’ on Humanfly’s latest is pretty good. When did that Canopy record come out ? I really like ‘Earth splits into Fire’ on there. I really like Primate’s Black Flag cover. I like the new Maruta and Ulcerate stuff, but I’m yet to actually own them yet. ‘Time Theft’ on the new Total Fucking Destruction record is still a favorite, but then the video came out for that last year.

None of it is particularly mind blowing though.

My list goes something like this:

    1) Protest the Hero “Moonlight”
    2) The Human Abstract “Antebellum” (Good choice, Axl!)
    3) Meek is Murder “Algorithms”
    4) Tesseract “Nascent”

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Skylar-Strange/1095951788 Skylar Strange

    1. Tesseract – Eden
    2. The Human Abstract – Complex Terms
    3. Scale The Summit – Whales
    4. Evergrey – It Comes From Within
    5. Protest The Hero – Tandem

    • igottawocket

Pound it for Scale the Summit.

      • MoonSnake

I don’t think I could pick a favorite from The Collective, it was just too fucking good.

  • http://www.myspace.com/7horns7eyes Shiv

How has everyone already forgotten about Ulcerate?

    • Adam J. A.

      It rocked my pebbles!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Steve-Chapman/100001360575060 Steve Chapman

I just heard a new Altar of Plagues song,Neptune is Dead. But it’s too early to make list’s.

    • Ryan

…but you can make an exception for Altar of Plagues.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tom-Saunders/660453371 Tom Saunders

Haven’t had enough time with Nathrakh, Obscura or The Human Abstract, and I haven’t heard that Hate Eternal song, so poopoo.

My 5 are (in no solid order yet)
    1. Rotten Sound- Self
    2. Protest the Hero- C’est La Vie (the lyrics are genuinely brilliant)
    3. Sylosis- Emperyal (I could have chosen many songs off this album, it’s brilliant)
    4. Crowbar- Let Me Mourn
    5. Abysmal Dawn- In Service of Time

A Trap Them song would be in there but I’ve only listened to one of those streams where you listen to the whole thing at once, so I don’t know any of the individual tracks. I don’t think there are enough obvious “songs” yet this year to do a list either… hmmmm,

    • Oroborus

      >Sylosis
      >Not Where the Sky Ends

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Makoto-Wakabayashi/1007321058 Makoto Wakabayashi

yes c’est la vie has really great lyrics
and in service of time is really groovin

  • Strapping Young Lad

I wanna say something off of Protest the Hero’s new album, but I just picked it up yesterday and I’ve only gave it a few spins… so for now, it’s The Human Abstract’s “Antebellum.” God is that song epic.

    • SuperTylerRPG

Same here. I feel like these two albums will be in constant rotation for a long time. Or at least until the BTBAM EP comes out.

  • Broken Wind Tunnel

    shrinks are solipsists….fuckin assholes. anyway.
How can that be the best shit of 2011 when it’s only march? I guess music has sunken to an incredibly low new low. I bet listening to two dogs fucking is going to be the next big thing…

  • A normal human like the rest of you

    1. Ulcerate – “The Destroyers of All”
    2. Glassjaw – “Our Color Green/Coloring Book EPs”
    3. Protest the Hero – “Scurrilous”
    4. The Haunted – “Unseen”
    5. American Heritage – “Sedentary”
    6. KYPCK – “Nizhe”

I would list TesseracT, but it’s basically a greatest hits album of older/already released material.

    • A normal human like the rest of you

      FUCK.

      1. Ulcerate – The Destroyers of All
      2. Glassjaw – Gold

      5. TesseracT – Eden or Lament
      6. American Heritage – City of God
      7. KYPCK – Felitsa

  • matty2fatty

That’s the first time I’ve bothered to listen to Times of Grace, and holy shit are they ever boring.

    um, songs….

Digital Veil (‘pull me from the gallows’ is the only thing that came to mind when I tried to think of a specific song, so they win)

    Just about anything from PtH

That’s about it for standout songs so far in my book.

  • Aether Jake

HAS EVERYONE FORGOTTEN ABOUT KEITH FUCKING MERROW?

    • Jack ATTACK

      +50,000

    • Ryan

Came here to say this. Heart of the Sea Nymph is probably my favorite song this year so far.

  • msv81

I’m not going to do songs; sorry, it’s too hard and will require far too much effort in going back and listening to full albums to choose individual cuts. So, I’ll list my personal “5 Best Albums of 2011 Thus Far” (in no particular order):

    Rotten Sound – “Cursed”

Dont know that band. But this comment is amazing.

  • Ron Deuce

How bout that new Napalm Death song we heard here last week? Cant think of specific songs but pretty much the entire Trap Them and Rotten Sound albums lay waste to that top 4.
