EXCLUSIVE SONG PREMIERE: PERIPHERY SAY “FRAK” TO THE GODS

periphery - icarus lives EP

Periphery’s Icarus Lives EP, which drops April 19th, is kinda like their self-titled debut album’s v1.5; it takes one of the album’s biggest hits, “Icarus Lives,” (duh) and spiffies it all up with a bunch of remixes and a few additional tracks. The Icarus Lives EP has three remixes of the title track — one by Bulb himself, one by a friend of the band and one by a contest-winning fan — as well as the original version of the song, its music video, two songs that were previously released digitally but never on CD (“Captain On” and “Eureka!”), a new snippet called “New Groove,” a re-jiggered version of the album track “Jetpacks Was Yes!”  and…. one entirely brand new song!

That new song, “Frak the Gods,” is ripe for the streaming below via your ever-caring friends at MS and Sumerian Records. Pre-order the Icarus Lives EP here. Check Periphery out on tour now with Scale the Summit and Fair to Midland; remaining dates after the jump.

Just a quick note on the Ep, there is only one band member remix (which i really just did for fun) The other one is by Zedd (an awesome remix artist!)

      Thanks! Fixed.

    It’s good

  • fritz

    Sounds like shit.

    • Gipson

      LIke … from a butt?

I think you mean it is THE shit. Totally different.

    • Go-Kart

      Yeh. Good shit!

      • Bulb

Its like the difference with something being “bollocks” and “the dog’s bollocks”, and we can thank Eddie Izzard for clearin that one up for us!

        • Different Drummer

I wonder if I’d read through these kinds of comments if I were a known musician (or author, artist, etc.) Must be brutal sometimes.

Bulb – you’re never gonna please EVERYBODY. For the record, I think all your shit’s bollocks. Or, your bullocks are the dog’s shit. What I’m really trying to say is, you dog’s bulllocks are full of shit. It’s the poo that doesn’t stink!

Kidding aside, I think it sounds great. As usual.

        • paulh

Amazing reference, Queen that dress is the dogs bollocks

    it’s a bulb song

It’s new in the sense that it’s not just an instrumental anymore.

Where could i find the instrumental versions?

  • JB

is it worth buying the whole ep? probably not. But i’ll buy the select few songs that werent on the last record because Periphery deserves the ability to make another spectacular record.

  • Danny Feng

Amazing! Can’t wait until I get my hands on the EP!

  • Strapping Young Lad

Nice! One of my favorite Bulb songs! Sounds sweet with vocals. btw Bulb, sweet Battlestar Galactica reference with the song title haha

    • Bulb

      Gotta love BSG!

      • Strapping Young Lad

Damn straight! Now if only they’d bring Firefly back….

        • DeathByHatchet

        • Bulb

I still havent watched it past the first episode. If i do, will i REALLY love it? That first episode didnt give me the vibe that it would be my style of show…

          • abortedKebab

The first episode was average, it gets way better.

          • Strapping Young Lad

the first episode’s a bit too long and slow, but then it gets awesome. If you end up liking it, please cover the super cheesy theme song. I would be forever in your debt!

          • Chainsword

I prefer to ignore the pilot and consider ‘train job, ep 2′ to be the real first episode. Really rings to the same tone as the rest of the series.

  • Crispy

I sincerely prefer the instrumental version

    • fucker

      go fuck yourself

      • YeezusChrist

I agree, the instrumental version wins.

    • peepeebottom

      Seconded.

There’s just something about this guy’s vocals that I cannot get in to.

    • KMFCM

      agreed

they’ve yet to get a vocalist I actually like, honestly

maybe they’ll put out an instrumental version of this too?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Charles-Rievone/712824591 Charles Rievone

    Frak The Servers!

  • Gipson

I like it a lot. Spence has a couple poppy moments, which I thought actually sounded pretty cool.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Matt-Hurley/1289730334 Matt Hurley

Vocals are a lot better here than on the debut. Musically its pretty cool too, tho as much as I like the crazy technical stuff I’ll be really floored if they do something in the vein of Letter Experiment and top it.

  • Shadrock

I want to punch that singer in the face. Kills the whole song for me when his penis engulfing lips start spewing clean vocals.

    • Bulb

      11/10! Would read again!

    • Miko

Because you’re a fucking idiot who can’t appreciate anything more than the sound of someone choking on a spoon. The vox are fucking phenomenal. Just because you can’t sing ANYTHING like Spencer doesn’t mean you should bag on him.

      • Fufkin

Haha – very good Bulb. That made me chuckle.

      • Shadrock

lol so I guess I should praise and appreciate Justin Bieber because I can’t sing like a douche bag. Or maybe Ebert and Roeper should start directing films before they review them right? What an ignorant come back considering you know nothing about me. I happen to enjoy this band’s instrumental album, but this singer is trash and thankfully you’re right, I CAN’T sing anything like him, I don’t know why anyone would want to either. For the record I LOVE clean vocals. Christian Älvestam says hi.

        • sharkmeet

          Trollololololol.

    • RhythmFlusher

“penis-engulfing lips” = perfect, I will use this in my life from now on

you’re still a massive tard though

      • Shadrock

Are you trying to tell me you want to suck cock now?

        • slavesofnil

The instrumental album sold way more copies than the vocal album, I’m guessing he’s not a “tard” and has a valid point for his opinion. You should shoot yourself with a bullet injected with aids, so that way if you don’t die from missing your small brain you’ll get aids.

          • Rik

Hm, why is it that all of the “Spencer sucks” crowd also seem to be huge assholes?

          • fucker

hahaha no it didn’t you fucking retard.

          • Kake

That comment about the gun and aids was the stupid insult I have ever read; you ought to be more creative and clever. If you’re not going to insult someone properly don’t do it at all.

        • Fredrick

Hey shadrock. I like to suck the cock, especially metals cock. Except i think your the cock in this example. Stop being such a tool dude. Progressive Metal/Djent isnt mainstream at ALL, these guys make REAL talent. You wanna talk about shit music? Start talking about Nickelback. Not Periphery.

          • Shadrock

Where did I say anything about not liking the music? In fact I’ve pretty much made it clear that I think this band has a ton of potential to be one of the greats. I’m talking about the vocalist here you pole choker. The guy doesn’t compliment the music at all, he makes the rest of the song hard to enjoy. Plain and simple, get the cock out of your mouth and pay attention to what I’m saying.

  • FossilGenera

FRAK was one of the first Periphery songs I heard. [instrumental, of course]
Spencers vocals and the music in this version makes it a million times better.
    well done!!
    PERIPHERY!! LOVE THAT SHIT!!

  • TomHanksFan

    OVERRATED BAND!!!!

    • sharkmeet

      ARE THEY?!!??!?!?!?!?

      • Bulb

OH BUT FOR REAL DOUGH DAWG!!

        • cubadivin

          LOLOLOLOLO!

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Thomas-Young/1635504874 Thomas Young

haha misha youre the shit. seriously though fuck these guys, Periphery is awesome and Spencer has improved a lot, especially live.

also probably a dumb question but do you keep in contact with Casey at all? I wondered what happened to his solo thing

    • Tom Hanks

      I like ‘em.

  • Matt G

Can’t wait for the EP, awesome to finally hear the studio version of the song because it sounded phenomenal live! Great job guys!!! \m/

  • IPlaySpector

Nothing new here, but the vocals do add a dimension to the song that adds to its awesomeness. Looking forward to seeing you guys fuck shit up at The Barbary!

  • Tommy

Amazing song. Spencer improved a lot.

  • jadedkid

bleh i did not enjoy one single nuance of what i just heard.

  • SomeGuyFromCanada

Chrome MetalSucks Music Player fail. IE8 worked first try. Wicked song BTW :D

    • NikkiDixx

Working fine on chrome for me.

  • Sponcedogulous

@slavesofnil. Where exactly did you get that fact from? I guess our label lies to us about our sales numbers and has been directly giving you the true numbers. Gosh darnit!

    • Strapping Young Lad

hahahahahaha, this post made my day.

  • sharkmeet

I just found out there’s a new breed of hipsters:

“The instrumental album is WEIGH btr. This singing sounds like justin bieber.”
    [struts off and doesn't care]

  • clrtxf

    Yes. Yes. Yes.

  • AARONIUS

For the record, I have a daughter so I have actually listened to Justin Beiber. I gotta say obviously it’s not my thing, but you can’t say the kid hasn’t got at least a little talent. I can’t really hate him for being lucky and meeting the right people who had the connections to help him become as big as he is. Some metalheads are waaaaaay to threatened by these pop stars.

In other news, I don’t really care for remixes, (especially 2 or 3 of the same song) but I am interested in hearing the “new” Periphery song so I may have to pick this up.

Spencer is a really good vocalist, don’t hate the player, just listen to something else if you troo guys can’t handle it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Paul-Barnes/506393858 Paul Barnes

Freakin’ awesome. One of my fave Bulb tunes now Peripherised!

Spencer just gets better and better! Saw the proof myself in Glasgow.

Bulby, any word on UK/EU pre-orders or is it all through iPoones?

  • matty2fatty

I’m not sure if I can remember a band being this polarizing in the 10 years I’ve been listening to metal. Nachmystium comes to mind as another example, but the Nach detractors don’t seem out outright HATE the band as much as just don’t get the appeal.

I think any time you can piss off this many people this badly while simultaneously being adored by just as many you’re doing something right (cue comment about how I’m an idiot for saying that pissing people off is a good thing).

    Awesome song, btw.

    • Bulb

Haha thats an interesting point of view, we definitely arent trying to stir shit up, just trying to make the kind of music we like, but i guess its better than making no impact at all! Cheers!

      • kaht

Cheers? Sounds like someone just got back from Europe :)

      • matty2fatty

No, I realize it’s not making music for the sake of trolling. I’ve found the ‘mainstream’ hate funny because I’ve been hanging around sevenstring.org for the last two years or so where, if anything, there’s a bit of idol worship going on. It’s neat to watch the two sides try to see who can use more ALL CAPS when attempting to out-internet the opposing camp.

    • riffaholic

      Totally agree dude.

Music is subjective, if it can bring a reaction of “I fucking hate thsi shit!” or “This shit fucking sucks!”, either way, it engaged the listener on some level.

I’d hate to be in a band whose output only ever garners comments like “Eh, I can take ‘em or leave ‘em” , “yeah, they’re alright” or “I won’t switch off it it came on the radio, but I wouldn’t actively listen to ‘em”

      • Steve

Except 90% of these dudes hating probably didnt even listen to the song.

I personally don’t like the vocals, but the bands been through a few singers, and they seem to have someone they like and that gels with them. good for them.

        musics always been fantastic, btw.

  • soup

i don’t know why i’m a metal fan anymore. there hasn’t been a metal release that i’ve enjoyed since…. i guess the last mastodon album.

    • CONrad

      Yuck…

      • Ray Peterson212

Sucks to be you considering Mastodon is awful. Maybe check out that new dub-step shit, maybe you’ll like that?

        • jadedkid

Mastodon is twice the band periphery is in every single aspect possible. From work ethic to songwriting. The fact that actual members of the band are taking time to defend themselves against haters on the internet COMPLETELY negates any shred of respect i had for their musical abilities. This band is a fucking joke and no one will care about them in a year. maybe two.

          • sharkmeet

Except for the part where they *aren’t* defending themselves at all, but actually telling people like you to just go listen to something else you like. Don’t like periph? Ok. Cool, go listen to Mastadon. That is OK.
But instead, you’re just trolling with pointless insults that make you look like– uh oh, I’m defending the band.
            I’M A FANBOY.

I’m gonna go kill myself since this band is just a joke, and I won’t care about them in a year, or maybe two. Because, I respect your opinion. It completely eliminated any validity of value / taste I had towards this music. Mastadon, here I come.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tre-Watson/506737562 Tre Watson

I dont get all the hate, I like it. Spencer isnt my favorite singer ever but its not like he isnt talented he really is crazy talented.

I pretty much feel like this is how periph sounds now, its definitely different. And its good. The fanboys think so too.

I really will never understand why MS comments sections seem to be the fountain of butthurt all the time. Chill out guys.

  • T. Saint

This is exactly what happens when bands have the ability to remix their own releases in their bedroom.
No one is ever happen with their mixes for any extended period of time, and that’s why they always change and have parts added and removed and more harmonies and blah blah blah.
The problem lies when you keep getting releases with the same songs on it from the last album; “But this is the new, ‘better’ version!”
Bands that put out major releases don’t do this stuff simply because they can’t.
I think it should stay that way.
No fucking, “New mix!” every 3 months.
    That’s an opinion.

    • Bulb

A fair point and opinion, but for my sake i should say im glad you have no control over that haha.
To be clear though, the remixes arent better mixes, they are electronic remixes of the song. Icarus is the theme of the EP so it only makes sense that it is included with it, and since we could redo the vocals we did, and since we did a video and a new version of Jetpacks it only made sense to add that (it wasnt the basis of releasing this Ep, more just of a bonus!)

Then there are the B-sides which werent available in physical format or even easily accessible, so we included those with tweaks as well because we could, even though they werent originally planned to be on there.

What im getting at is this was originally just gonna focus on the Remix competition which was something we were really excited about, but then we ended up having material we were proud of that we really wanted to add on to the release to make it even more substantial!

Hope that clears some of the reasoning behind the ep up!

      • sharkmeet

Also. Because it’s a motherf*@$ing EP. You can do / put whatever the hell you want to it. It’d be one thing if this was the official 2nd album, but its not, so who gives a derp?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Thom-Blackburn/1462950043 Thom Blackburn

thanks bulbasaur, the band sounds like its working better and better together everyday (thumbs up to the vocal melodies on this adding so much to the song)

  • peepeebottom

    Instrumentals = amazing

    Spencer’s vocals = amazing

Combination of the two =cannot dig.

I played the shit out of the instrumental version of Periphery’s debut LP, and I tried countless to appreciate the versions with vocals, but I just cannot do it. Maybe there’s something wrong with me, but I feel like high range clean vocals just do not fit with this kind of music.

    • Derik

This is definately my problem too.
I wish i could get into it more, just can’t.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Shadoe-Crossland/1191510249 Shadoe Crossland

Good track. I now need to change my underwear.

  • Matt

I agree with the comments about the vocalist. I’m not saying he’s bad but it just doesn’t “gel” with me. Now someone will tell me I’m wrong and bla bla blaahhhhhhhh followed by bulb saying bla bla blaaaahhhhhh

    • sharkmeet

You’re wrong and bla bla blaahhhhhhhh

  • Beelebob

you guys get a lot of hate on spencer so i feel i should express how much i enjoy his vocals. it’s one of the many things that draws me to you guys over many other metal bands. hater gonna hate, but know i fucking love it!

  • shreddies

I was going to say that I was hearing a little bit too much Danza III in this tune…although after reading through some of the comments and realizing that the instrumental is quite likely pre-Danza III I am not going to push my luck. I also re-listened and I’m not so sure my argument has legs. I guess when it comes to djenty material these days there seems to be a fair amount of commonality.

Odd time signatures used to be what really pushed progressive metal into sounding different. At times it seems like that is no longer the case. *Sigh*

    Bulb mad respect still.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/James-Moore/100000639168247 James Moore

Mah god, People!!! This stuff is amazing, I think Spencer goes incredible well in this song, and every other song they’ve released, and I know I shouldn’t really bring this up but, He’s much better than the old singer they had as well :) He has so much range, it’s great, I think it all just adds up to make a HUGELY unique band, AND I WILL CONTINUE TO LISTEN FOR EVA :D

    PERIPHERY: LOVE THAT SHIT!

    • Frak

I saw Spencer hump Bulb at their show in Denver on Monday, then Bulb humped Spencer back and it was awkward cause he still was wearing and playing his guitar, I used to like these guys but now when I listen I just feel…dirty :-/

      • bulb

        As you well should!

        • CS Degenerate

Why should i feel dirty? i payed to hump your leg in Orlando at the house of blues show and all i felt was my musicianship instantly jumping up a level or two. i still cant keep up with Matt [i can only break two cymbals with one swing of the stick] but dammit I’m trying.

  • uLy

Song sucks. This band is so goddamn awful it’s annoying it gets any mention on this site. Song has absolutely no soul at all, it might as well be a computer spitting out random arpeggios hooked up to a line 6 spider amp.

    • sharkmeet

      HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

    • vic

…You do realize that until you qualify your argument with examples of why you believe Periphery is “awful”, we’re all just going to assume you’re a know-nothing moron/troll, right? And that includes the people who agree with you, because at least they have reasons (usually).

      • Shadrock

What more of an example do you need to say a song sucks? Who fucking cares man. It’s weird fans who are so defensive like you that are looked down upon just as equally. Our ears don’t like it, that’s about as blunt as you can put it, does one really need to break it down for you whiny assholes?

You know why most of these people hate this band? Because they have so much potential and this cry baby emo singer ruins it.

I can promise you Periphery you’d be doing a lot better without this guy.

        • sharkmeet

NO idea where you got cry baby emo. This sounds nothing like Hawthorne Heights.

        • Poop

Fans are so defensive because it’s obvious people dislike certain kinds of music because of their biased opinions. And you prove this by saying, “this cry baby emo singer ruins it.”

        • Poop

But then again, enjoying a song that has singing in it will certainly dock some of your mawnliness points, so you might want to think twice about thinking about how you think of things.

        • Shadrock

Yeah because it’s totally not manly to sing or something, I see what you did there Har har. These are some of the most ignorant responses I’ve read so far.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Eric-Nguyen/100001285066849 Eric Nguyen

You know what’s really funny? The fact that “soul” means simplified music. I am an avid listener of technical/progressive music. Everytime I see “soulless” and technical metal combined, I know you are a tard. There are bands that just wank (Viraema, Brain Drill, Some of Dying Fetus’s catalogue not comparing them to Periphery) but really if those artists can play at this technical rate, they can play whatever “soulful” things you want, instead, they choose to write music in an interesting and intelligent manner. Do you really think these artists sit down and say “I’ll just slap random sweeps and arpeggios together and make a song”? What’s your idea of soulful music?

      • uLy

Oh great.. here we go with the “intelligent” music nonsense. There’s nothing intelligent about someone doing this type of math driven metal because you can basically have a computer do it for you, and do it better. It sounds mechanical and lifeless… that’s what i mean by it doesn’t have any soul. It’s cold sounding, even the damn tone sounds sterile as fuck.

Maybe it’s cool for you because it’s all “technical” and not many people dig it right now but there’s a reason why there was only 1 Meshuggah. It’s even more shameful that these kids are trying to slap girl punk band mtv vocals on top of Meshuggah inspired riffs and beats… it’s fucking hilllllarious.

        • Tyler Durden

By that logic, there is no point to releasing pop or hip hop music because its composed almost entirely through drum machines and synthesizers (in today’s world, these are replaced by computers). I’m not a fan of either genre, but it would be ignorant to say that they have no merit. Periphery has an incredibly diverse sound among their piers, but the problem is, everyone has the meshuggah spoon shoved up their ass and anything that has the slightest hint of poly-rhythm is instantly written off. If this song was written by Thordendal and Jens was belting out these vocals, the metal world would adore it.

  • Shaun

I fucking love that bulbs on here commenting to the fans and failures, which is what the people saying this song sucks are, they either don’t provide a reason why they don’t like it or spout the same crap about clean vox because they’re knuckle dragging douchebags.

    Good work Periphery.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mark-Mritz-Rabson/639118811 Mark Möritz-Rabson

I have to say that this is pretty much the first Periphery song I’ve heard that was good as a Bulb song and hasn’t been completely ruined when it became a Periphery song. That album was sickening. This is solid though.

FUCK. NEVER MIND. I just heard the cleans. Why couldn’t Bulb have just kept it instrumental?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mark-Mritz-Rabson/639118811 Mark Möritz-Rabson

Actually, I’ve realized that it’s not that the vocals are bad – like peepeebottom said, both parts are really good, it’s just that the two work badly together. The cleans just sound really out of place. The lows work well though! I still love the instrumental version of this song more than any other Bulb song <3.

      • sharkmeet

Disagree. It was up until that I heard the clean vocals that made me excited about the song. The vocals compliment the lead guitars. They provide a new flavor to heavy metal that you just don’t really hear of today.
It could have easily been all screaming, but interesting Super Metroid-esque singing melodies are what make me come back for more from Periph.

The vocal layering is beast!!!! This needs to be all over the next album. New mix sound is win, this song rules!!

    • N{o}ah

Completely agree! New vocal mix technique sounds sick!

  • YildunDave

It sounds like the mastering fucks up the mix a bit. Some audible pumping and breathing when the vocals swell. Song ain’t bad, but the vocals are seriously killing it for me.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sean-Green/1267833285 Sean Green

I feel like this song lacks a bit of the melodic dynamics I came to love from Periphery’s debut album.
Regardless though, it’s better than 95% of shit coming out nowadays.
And I think it’s hilarious how half the shit talkers on here probably don’t even realize that Misha is responding to every single one of their comments.
    lol
OH BUT FOR REAL DOUGH DAWG!!!!!
    hahahaha

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-DeMaria/707072189 Mike DeMaria

GREAT SONG. I love all the grooves and I really enjoyed how Spencers clean vocals came in at just the right time to change the listeners ears a bit

    and to Bulb:

Ive always thought its amazing that you are so connected with your fans let alone responding to the opinions ( mostly uneducated) and i wish more bands were as good at getting back to their fans as you guys are. You can consider me a fan for life and Ive learned so much from the song structuring you create as well as your approach to managing your band with minimal help from labels

i cant wait to see you perform and I really hope our bands meet up some day. congrats on the new release and you can consider me buying your preorder pack for the icarus ep

  • Bulb

    Thanks guys!
Its not a big deal if you guys dont dig the song/band whatever, honestly its just music and there isnt a single band out there that anyone loves so it would be irrational to put music out to the public and expect everyone to love it haha.
That being said, i am really happy that some of you guys dig it, and to those of you that dont, its all good cuz there is more music out there than ever now!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sean-Green/1267833285 Sean Green

      Couldn’t have worded it better.
Keep pumping out the amazing tunes bro!

    • Freinds

haha well put Bulb. Hopefully Periphery can get on a tour this summer-not with asking alexandria, and chelsea grin.

For people that whine about Spencer’s vocals, please, leave this site and quit living.

imho, I havent heard anything, even nearly as orgasmic as Misha’s songs combined to Spencer’s awesome vocalrange. Sure the instrumental version was “better”, but it has nothing to do with Spencer’s vocals.

    peace

  • http://wreckedreviews.wordpress.com/ WreckedReviews

The vocals added nothing to this track IMO (like 75% of the songs Spencer sings/screams over). Loved it as an instrumental. When are you guys going to get rid of this singer and hire someone to actually complement your already awesome music? I still feel like you’re settling. Just my opinion. No disrespect.

Why do his vox always sound mega compressed (thin) and dimed out on the gain? It makes him sound weak, especially when he screams…like you had to record him and then turn it up over the mix.

    Bulb…keep on rippin’ those tunes!

    • Bulb

Its a fair opinion, but it is not one we remotely share, we love the vocals and i think this is one of my personal faves as far as spence’s performance. Its just taste at the end of the day, and we apparently we dont share that common ground, but its all good. Just be happy knowing that we finally have a singer that we love and who works perfectly for us in every respect!

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-DeMaria/707072189 Mike DeMaria

I dont know if Spencer has been working on his technique at all but his growls have sounded the best on the new track compared to the album. so if hes been actively doing that its very clear in this song

        • Bulb

He works obsessively at it, which is one of the many reasons we love him. When he is home he is always recording, always working on new ideas and trying to improve his technique, we hired him based off of potential and drive and i know he will continue to improve constantly because he really puts the work in and cares about it deeply!

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-DeMaria/707072189 Mike DeMaria

Its great to hear how dedicated he is. the fact that all of you work so hard to improve your individual skills shines through in alot of the unique ideas you incorporate in your songs. more bands today need that drive haha

    • Steve

I actually agree with the vocals being thin.Thats why I cant really get into his vocals. Could be just how its mixed and shit, but who knows. I think periphery needs a heavy balls to the wall scream over their shit. I dont mind the clean shit, like most of it actually.

I just think someone like Baretto was heavier, and I actually liked his Cornell-esque singing better. but thats just the opinion of this one man. bigg ups fo livin dey mufuckin dream eitha way . ha.

  • So Long Gayboys

I like this song and I like Spencer’s vocals. He’s adorable too.

  • Craig Petersen

I never heard the instrumental version of this song but the vocals on this new song are sick! I almost forgot how good Periphery’s debut album was. I’m gonna have to go and give it a listen now!

  • sharkmeet

    Also. Periphery on Vinyl? SOLD.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Matt-Shaffer/1469700001 Matt Shaffer

Spencer’s voice has really improved. Song is, and has always been, awesome.

  • scalemysummit

cool song. i don’t know much about this band except they’re all great musicians. i think the drummer is dope. his grooves make people strip down naked.

as for the singer, i think his voice is unique, but the clean vox do sound weird in some songs. i think with so much talent in the band, they can only kick ass.

these guys…along with scale the summit, anmls as ldrs, protest the hero…splurge

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Skyler-Cain/100000173012069 Skyler Cain

spencer has gotten better. not just tolerable, but enjoyable. wow.

  • sceewoop

Well I think that was a pretty damn satisfying listen. I totally get why people can’t get into this band. But I think Spencer’s vocals (and I def think this is why he was brought in) are great because they’re so different and its fun to sing-a-long. Call it whiny, emo, whatever. It’s different, its refreshing. With that said, assuming he’s a fan, I’d looooove to see Devy produce the next full-length. Dude knows how to get the best out of the vox (e.g. Natural Born Chaos). Either way, can’t wait to hear how much the P will evolve!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Anthony-Walker/508832011 Anthony Walker

Can’t get enough of you guys, I’m genuinely blown away by every aspect of your music. Haven’t felt this kind of admiration and excitement towards a band since I heard Dream Theater for the first time.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lucas-Dias/100000516963013 Lucas Dias

      ditto.

  • sharkmeet

    LYRICS PLS?

  • czar

i hope there is a instrumental version of next album. periphery has to much stuff going with instruments to add this guy in top of it

  • http://www.myspace.com/theholoceneband Geoff

Periphery is a great band. I respect them on many different levels. Misha Mansoor has a great business prospective that not everyone is born with. If you don’t dig the music, whatever doodz. Just take notes from them and do yo thang.

  • nathan cole

Spence is a talented dude. i saw him in atl w/ veil of maya & was like, “No way this fuckin’ guy will pull that off live” but he sounded real solid. Props to him. i like most songs w/ the vox better, although i prefer the screams. Go see them w/ scale the summit.

  • Clancy

Why is the MetalSucks music player so sucky?

  • kylebish

Wow this sounds 10,000x better with actual speakers instead of my shitty laptop ones.

  • morbido

Three thumbs up to you guys! Great song as usual!!! Relese the EP already :)
Bulb; are you using standard six strings guitars och are you using 7-string or baritone on the recordings? I saw you playing a Mayones Gothic Blakkheim guitar. Did you get endored? Cuz I know Blakkheim and Sodomizer personaly, and it would be cool if you played on their guitars.
Again, great music guys! hope you can come to sweden soon!
    Cheers!

    • Bulb

Its actually a customized Mayones that they sent me, but it is similar to the Blakkheim in a few ways. They also sent me a 7 string regius with this gorgeous faded blue denim oil finish which is currently still in the uk. Absolutely love their guitars!

On the debut recording though it was all Blackmachine B2 and EBMM Jp7, both standard scale, i am not the biggest fan of baritone scales as they make the higher strings sound strange and bending/vibrato is weird too.

On Frak i actually used my Ibanez 420z 6 string, its a very unique sounding guitar for whatever reason, and i love it!

      • morbido

Sweet! The funny thing is that the guys (sodomizer and blakkheim) only uses the mayo guitars live and not on records ( you did not here this from me!!!!!) haha :)
I use an LTD custom baritone guitar for my metal project. The guys at bloodbath was thinking of borrowing my guitar for the recording of “Unblessing the Purity” but they ended up using a reg 6-string esp for the job. Since then I´ve used a standard esp tuned down to drop A for my project. A bartitone gives you a more fat and deep tone but a well intonated standard guitar with heavy gauge gives you more crisp, well balanced and tight tone. That´s why I asked what guitar you use. I´m a drummer and not original a guitarist so I ask stupid questions :P
        Love your guitar sound!
Gig sweden and I´ll buy you guys some beers!! deal? :)
keep up the good work buld!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Josh-Pereira-Cooper/590890273 Josh Pereira Cooper

Doesnt bulb use his Blackmachine for the 6 string stuff? and im assuming his BRJ for the 7′s?

    • bulb

I use several brands since I only sign nonexclusive deals. Right now I have my brj 7, a mayones 6 ebmm bfr 7 and ibanez 6 on the roadwith me, the blackmachines are too nice and rare for the road, or at least my b2 and upcoming b7 are, they are strictly for studio, but I may take my b6 out soon!

  • Sponcedogulous

Here’s an easy solution to you guys who don’t like my singing…. are you ready for it…. go listen to something else with nothing but screaming and quit WHINING! For not liking the band, you guys really like to follow what’s going on with us and give us a lot of attention innit?

I’m glad most of you guys dig it though. I’m here to stay so expect more of this in the future!

    • N{o}ah

It still baffles me how you manage to retain those highs in your voice after all those gutteral low screams…as a singer, hats off to you sir!

      • czar

u can kepp your job, just release instrumental versions as well as the regular one ;)

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Steven-Selover/100000585640100 Steven Selover

Song is amazing. Vocals are phenominal. Just keep making good music :)

    • DamienTheOmen

Seriously, I love your vocal style man but why are you even rising to it?

Just let ‘em have their fun, I’m one to talk about about bitching and whining but you’re only giving them the satisfaction. Either way, great job! Loving it and looking forward to the EP/new album!

  • gie

I still don’t personally think Spencer is a great fit for Periphery, but man I have to say, that F5 (I think?) towards the end totally made me jizz my pance. Mad props.

    • Seth

I own both the instrumental and regular versions of their album and I definitely prefer the instrumental one. If all of their vocals are like this from now on I can see that changing though.

I’ll still probably buy both versions of any album they put out as long as they provide the instrumental versions..if they don’t I very well may not but the it at all to avoid disappointment when I crave a break from the vocals.

      • gie

I’m not much of an extreme metal fan anymore, so in this song I actually prefer Spencers vox to the music now that I’ve listened to it for a bit. Considering I idolized Bulb like half a year ago and I was one of those people really dissapointed when they announced Spencer, I find it ironic that Spencer manages to re-spark my interest for Periphery.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tyler-Harris/1428087632 Tyler Harris

I’d be more than happy to pre-order this if it wasn’t through MerchConnection. $15 for shipping alone is ridiculous.

    • Bulb

Yeah dude, the shipping is a bit out of control, i wish we had any say in that but we dont, so we tried to keep the bundle prices down to counteract it, sorry about that!

  • Q

I second the shipping issue but I know that’s not in the band’s control. Regardless, its been pre ordered and I can’t wait until I can give it a listen.

  • kpayne

Frak all the haters. You guys are easily one of my favorite bands. CAN’T WAIT for the new EP

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Gene-Glondo/519791284 Gene Glondo

Judging by all of the negativity toward Spencer, I should probably rethink my life. He is my favorite vocalist of any band right now. Mixing djent with a vocalist that has a hundred octave range is an orgasm waiting to happen.

  • Tugboat

Periphery is one of the best metal bands around right now and Spencer has some of my favorite vocals (both clean and screaming) I’ve heard in a while. Also the new EP sounds like it is going to be sick. Love that shit.

  • KMFCM

instead of hating on the singer, I’m going to say JUST GET WARREL DANE

  • Captain Shoggoth

BULB! If you Peripherise Breeze I will suck your cock on the next UK tour. Well maybe not that but c’mon pleeeeeaaaaaaase

  • goatman

why is this meshuggah ripoff getting hype?

  • goatman

why is this meshuggah ripoff getting hype? i don’t get it

  • derp

Honestly the way that the new stuff is mixed the dedication Spencer has to refining his sound shows immensely. Because of how much heavier it sounds, (less airy) it’s hard for me to listen to the original album anymore. The song (Passenger) that Spencer did with Haunted Shores, which is a sick (band?) is so much heavier than his original style and I hear that sound here as well and its AWESOME. Makes me really excited for a new full album whenever that may come out!

Also if you see this comment Bulb, what the deal with Haunted Shores, are they a band with Chris or just some cool songs that exist, or a band you’re in??? I saw an older album on itunes but it sounds nothing like the newer songs… I’m so confused but the songs kick ass especially Terra Firma.

  • DMT

honestly, if you dont like his vocals, youve got the instrumental version, put your own fucking patterns on there and we dont have to listen to your bitching. problem solved.

now, as i wasnt a huge fan of the vocals at first they have grown on me over time. His patterns have evolved in this new song. The other song on the ep thats titled Eureka, has simialar vocal patterns to this. im very impressed. keep up the good work bulb and periphery!

  • yeahhhboygetwild

Love this band. Love spencer. Love bulb.

But honest to god, the production wears me out after repeated listens. I know it’s super cheap to do it at home with your interface, your axe-fx rig, and your edrum kit but I personally would listen to it so much more if the mix wasn’t so fatiguing (and it becomes even moreso on studio monitors). Do the next record with Taylor Larson or Durv or someone that knows what they’re doing. Spending money on that kinda stuff e.g. quality recording is usually worth it.

Ps in other news, this song rules. Keep it up. <3

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lchln-Pul-Brwn/843980370 Lâchlän Påul Brøwn

Holy crap! That’s Spencer doing those growls?? That guy has improved out of sight!
I’m performing the new version of Jetpacks at uni in about a month and I have to get one of the girls to sing it for me coz none of the guys can keep up with his epic range =P

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Laz-Mmxii/1038883574 Laz Mmxii

This EP is incredible, this band is incredible… Nuf said right there I guess…. Alot of people compare them to Textures, which is fair in my opinion, but that shouldn’t take away from how amazing this band really is…. I’d love to see em do a show with The Human Abstract sometime, even though I think that these guys > them that would be an amazing night of music….
