NEXT UP AT OUR OPEN MIC NIGHT, SIR THOMAS GILES

Thursday, April 7th, 2011 at 12:00pm by

Last weekend Thomas Giles (aka BTBAM’s Tommy Rogers) came through town on a little mini-tour to promote his latest solo release Pulse, with Cave In’s Steven Brodsky in tow. I couldn’t go because, ya know, life happens, and watching this video from SMN News of Giles perform “Sleep Shake” makes me all that much more sour about it.

As opposed to the full-out bombast of a BTBAM show, the Thomas Giles performance is intimate and bare-bones. It’s the kind of show I could see playing a coffee shop or small performance space with tables scattered throughout; I’d get hella stoned beforehand, sit, order a cocktail, and enjoy. The complete opposite of the usual metal experience, much like the album itself.

i saw giles and brodsky in providence last sunday at the met and the show was pretty much exactly how you described it. it was in a tiny little venue there was no more than 30 people at the show and by tommys set everybody had pulled up tables and seats and just sat back and enjoyed the show. both brodsky and tommy had great sets and im so glad i got to see it. (being as btbam and cave in are two of my favorite bands) tommy playing with paul and the old btbam drummer pretty much just made that night amazing.

Why did I not know about this? I have to look at the other upcoming dates.

i saw him/them at santos party house in nyc on the 2nd. It was a great performance. I liked how things were slightly switched up for the live performances, compared to the album.

“Mr. Bird” was played heavy with guitars, switched up the dynamics, it was so cool. Gonna post a video of it on you tube soon, ill post the link in a reply comment.

    You crack me up Vince!

Was at the Philly show last Friday. “Mr. Bird” and “Catch and Release” were surprisingly good live. Got to meet Tommy and he signed my CD. It was awesome. The End.

I don’t know how much BTBAM pay you guys to constantly advertise their stuff, but this is in no way metal and shouldn’t be discussed on a metal site. Please try to be relevant to your primary subject.

    • yea

go suck yourself off to the next burzum album then.

      • Irrational Gaze

As much as I like the Gojira song that shares your username, I’m more inclined to disagree with your statement. This IS relevant to a primary subject, the subject being BTBAM, the subheader being their frontman’s solo album. If Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth was doing something abroad, they’d post about it. Just because there are some acoustic/jazzy numbers on Pulse, doesn’t make it not relevant.

Great song. Pretty cool to see it being performed live.
