MISHASUCKS.NET/GEAR_GEEK RETURNS! ASK BULB A TECH QUESTION, HAVE IT ANSWERED

Last year Periphery guitarist Misha “Bulb” Mansoor penned five excellent columns for MetalSucks in which he explored the finer points of gear nerdery; how to construct a “big” studio tone, how to differ those tones from live tones, and contemplating completely ditching speaker cabinets live were just some of the topics that gave us nerd boners the likes of which haven’t been seen since we saw a hundred Princess Leia costumes at Comic Con. But then Periphery became mega rock stars and lived on the road for months on end, leaving little time for Misha to publicly muse on the inner workings of his Axe-FX.

By now I’m sure you see where this is going: Bulb is back! And he wants to know what YOU want to know with regards to guitars, gear, recording and the like. How does he get that killer snare tone? What kinds of pickups does he use? Why is Periphery such a piece-of-shit band? Now’s your chance to ask Misha whatever guitar/tech-related question is burning a hole in your brain, so ask away and your question just might be answered by the man himself in his next column. Go ahead and troll all you want… he feeds on the stuff for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

why is Periphery such a piece of shit band?
why does you’re vocalist sound like a peacock getting its neck broken when you play live?
why do you professionally record every single riff you pull out of your ass
how do you get you’re guitars to sound like an old hag’s dry snizz?

    • Ben

Rudiger, why did your mother not do the smart thing and shove a coat hanger up her std infected cunt when she found out that a piece of shit like you was festering in her filthy, wretched womb?

      • Matt

        Uh-oh Ben u mad bro?!?

        • Ben

No. Not mad. Dipshits like him just deserve to have their retardedness pointed out to them. I don’t even like Periphery but he’s just attempting to make himself feel better about his pathetic life.

          • Matt

No I’m pretty sure he has legit points even if you don’t “agree” with them. I’ve seen them live and personally I agree about the vocalist, bulb does record every riff ever (atleast his sound cloud used to be that way), and his guitar tone is pretty lifeless.

            So calm down bro.

      • Ben

Again, calm. Stop being mistaken and assuming otherwise. Creatively pointing out that the guy is a prick doesn’t automatically mean I’m riled up.

Also, I didn’t make a statement one way or the other as to whether I agreed with the guy. Like I said, I’m not a Periphery fan. I’m also, however, not a fan of bitches being bitches when it’s not called for. Dude’s doing a question/answer column for a music blog, there’s no need to trash talk the guy. It’s an asshole thing to do, any way you look at it.

It’d be like someone inviting you over for dinner and you use the opportunity to bitch about the way they choose to cook their food. You may be right, you may be wrong, but either way… asshole.

    Misha!

I’m trying to “graduate”, if you will, from running an 1/8 inch headphone cable from my Line 6 Pod in to my computer’s line in port for direct recording. I was thinking about buying the Line 6 UX2 TonePort, but can’t I just use my pod through an interface, like an M-Audio Fast track or something? Basically what I’m asking is, where should I go from here? If I remember correctly, in the videos of your home setup you were also running a Pod at some point. How did/do you do it?

  • orc

    line 6 spider 75w or line 6 spider 100w?

  • Beenyad

why can’t i get hot babes?

Long time listener of your band and member of sevenstring.org (pretty much the same statement)

Any chance of rerecording I lost my lunch in my pants?

But seriously , which type of bareknuckles do you use? How did you EQ you Engl invader? II own an Engl SE and i figure its eq voicing are similar to your invader’s.

Totally amateur comment: Can you guys come up to Prince George BC Canada? My band can play and your band can play and your band can sleep on my floor and i can make cupcakes and we can talk gear for waaaaaay too long and yeah….. pipedreams….

  • al_Z

did u use digital guitar wireless systems (like Line 6 Relay) and can u make objective comparement between them and different cables (i mean of different quality/length)? thanks.

  • Dustin Trent

what kind of instrument cables do you use? Are you done with your solo project “bulb”? and is periphery going to release an instrumental version of “icarus lives ep”?

  • al_Z

and btw what options can u suggest to make groove (soncally) without bass, lets say with two 7strings (baritone or not). actually this question must be for Scot Hull, but i still don’t see his gear here, and i dunno if he’s geek in this case.

    What’s your dream setup?

    Pod HD 500. Your thoughts?

  • Steve O

Would first off like to say that Misha is a stellar guy, saw them about a month ago and talked to him for a little bit after the show (not as long as I’d like since they kicked everyone out right after it was done haha), and he is one of the most humble, down to earth dudes I’ve ever met. Was definitely an honor to meet you, sir.

Anyway… Misha, in your estimation, what’s the best way to record drums on a budget? I’m thinking of getting a Focusrite Saffire in the future along with a Samson 7/8kit, any opinions?

  • dominic

who is in Maryland can setup a Gmajor with the Ground Control to control a Mesa Triple Rec too? also the other member of my band wants the same control and effects but to control his Soldano Decatone head.

    cheers!

    • Mo Jiggity

I oscillate between living in College Park, MD and being in St. Mary’s County further south… Having owned a GMajor and knowing MIDI I can show you what’s up if you need me to. Message me on SevenString.org if you want… my username is the same there as it is here.

  • Tom

How did you create those atmospheric backing (drum)synths on your songs and on the AAL album? With FL Studio? I want to know because they are the sex.

    • Etc

Yeah, I’d love to hear an in depth explanation of how you go about doing the glitchy/electronic stuff on that album.

what do think about the elven rack?

Misha, could you talk a bit about your songwriting process? Like what positions, chords, scales, groups of notes you like to go to when writing?

  • Seb

    Monsieur Mansoor,

How do you approach tuning when playing with an extended range guitar?

When I played with a 6 string, I tuned it baritone style with the 6th dropped to A (so like drop D but a step down). I liked the possibilities having the open 6th string offered in terms of freeing up an extra finger and closing the gap between certain notes on the top 2 strings so that I could use more extravagant chord voicing.

When i got a 7 string, I found myself stuck and needing to experiment quite a bit to figure out how I wanted to tune the damn thing, how to best utilize the extra string while still maintaining the open string concept in some way. It was also a bit of a struggle trying to convert older songs from 6 to 7 strings. Eventually I settled on just dropping the 7th in the same way I had been doing on the 6th. The result was usable for me, so i’ve stuck with it for a while, although it required some relearning of scale placements in relation to the 7th and what not…

Being that there are 8 and even 9 string guitars out there, how do you recommend approaching tuning of these extended range beasts, given certain dilemmas such as those i’ve mentioned above, say for example, if I got an 8 and wanted to keep the first 7 tuned as I currently am on my 7th… how would you tune the 8th?

Further to this, have you tried Lundgren pick ups? How do they fare against the ones you prefer, and what do you think of active VS passive pick-ps.

    Merci, mon ami.

  • mikehart

Well if he doesnt like periphery he obviously listens to shitty ass music, so lets him be unfortunate and not understand the essence of Bulb.

    • Or…

Perhaps you should spend less time listening to music and more time studying spelling, punctuation and grammar.

So we’ll “lets” you be unfortunate and not understand that people having different opinions doesn’t mean they listen to “shitty ass” music.

  • ChickenArise

I’d like to see some pointers on vocal effects – common combinations, vocal distortion, etc.

  • General_Maul

    Misha,

I am not all that tech. advanced, but what I want to know is what kind of settings do you use on your AXE-FX??? Also, in your free time, nothing with guitar in hand (yeah right), what video games do you play or books are you currently into? I know your really into the composer of FF from the Revolver issue you guys were in.

    Hello Misha,

I read the response where you mentioned for the album you ran your axefx into your firepod. I’m curious what benefits you gain from running an amp modeller like a pod or an axefx into an interface rather than simply straight into a computer. Also, any quick tips on re-amping?Thanks!
