UNSIGNED AND UNHOLY: SO YOU THINK YOU CAN METAL?

Don’t believe there are good unsigned bands out there? Think everyone’s got a chance in this day and age of easy ProTools edits? I beg to differ. Let’s looks at Ever Forthright, Ironhide and So Hideous My Love, three new unsigned bands, after the jump.

  • Ex-Periphery vocalist Chris Barretto and the lads in jazzy, experimental post-djent outfit Ever Forthright have a brand new track called “Screen Scenarios.” Stream it below:

Screen Scenarios by Ever Forthright

  • From what I can tell by listening to “Create/Collapse/Repeat,” the one track of Ironhide’s debut album posted on their Bandcamp page, these guys mix chaotic brutality ala The Red Chord with something a tad more experimental and techy. I dig.
  • Add another band to the list of amazing new metal acts to come from NYC: So Hideous My Love, despite their awkwardly cringe-worthy, side-swooped haircut-invoking band name, do a fine job combining black metal musical aesthetics with tight, atmospheric soundscapes ala Junius, Constants, Moving Mountains etc. So Hideous My Love technically aren’t unsigned — they’re on small indie label Play the Assassin Records — but let’s give them a mulligan on this one. Stream their entire new 4-song EP here.

Is that the same Play the Assassin that has Nothingface? If so, totally don’t deserve your unsigned love.
    Not bad music though.

  • Cw

Ever forthright: one of the few djemt bands that is almost as good as periphery, due I no small part to the fact that their guitarist nick is a fucking jazz badass which a knac for writing sweet, memorable riffs.
Gotta check out ironhide though, spuds promising.

    • Strapping Young Lad

Agreed. It’s also good to hear Chris’s vocals again!

    • Gipson

Also agreed. Like a Periphery that pushes the prog side of things a little bit further (and in the best way). I like all the tracks they have out right now, but that new one, “Screen Scenarios”, is an absolute monster! Terrific outro. Just wish they kept it going longer.

    • Lord Micrhon

Wat? In my own humble opinion Ever Forthright blows Periphery away in terms of “being as good as”. The music is way more thought out (musically/technically) and adds a whole other bar with Legit jazz. Chris is A LOT better now. His tone is better and he can scream a ton better [than Spencer]. Of course all my opinion.. <.< Less Djent moar Djazz.

  • Brian

Post-djent? Really Vince? How is it possible to have that already?

    • Gipson

Ha, I came to ask the same thing.

(On Ever Forthright’s Facebook, they offer the term “djazz” for consideration.)

      • bowing headds

I too came here to ask this. I’ve only known about the term for a few months and most of the music does nothing for me. Post-djent, though? Cripes. Do we have post-screamo-crunk yet?

        • colonblow

I was going to say “Post-djent? Go fuck yourself.”

  • peepeebottom

Well shit. Ever Forthright is quite delightful, even as played out as Djent is in this day and age.

  • Lincoln

Ever Forthright is the new front runner in the djent scene. They don’t play jazz, jazz is swing, what they play is intelligent music. Music where the musicians carry out intelligent conversations. This is the thing people need, intelligent beautiful music, not that bs that most of the other metal heads are playing. I am a jazz lover, and these guys really opened my eyes to the intelligence of a real groove. Almost like what pat metheny did, he plays such intelligent music that I love it. These guys are my favorite :)

      >they don’t play jazz, jazz is swing

What? That’s like saying “Dark Tranquility aren’t a death metal band. They play melodic death metal.” Swing is a style of jazz sure, but Ever Forthright have a huge jazz influence. It’s mostly jazz fusion, but still.

      • Gipson

Agreed. I’ll admit I haven’t listened to a lot of jazz in my day, and I know Ever Forthright considers jazz a big part of their sound, but to me it doesn’t feel like they combine the two too often. Like, they’ll have a djent/metal section, and then they’ll have a jazz section, but not what I would call true jazz-metal. If such a thing can even exist.

        Is that what Shining does?

        • Tosin It Losin It

most of the harmonies derive from jazz theory, even in the metal parts

            dude, ephel duath

          • Lord Micrhon

^ What Tosin It Losin it says ^

  • Sender

I agree with these Ever Forthright comments. Really the best band to exist in the past few years. Their concept of music is amazing. There’s something for everyone to love in this music, especially if you are a true musician. Definitely “Musicians music”. I’d really love to see an interview with them

    oh….and….DAT SAX

Did i really just read Post-Djent???
    …Fuck man…

  • Tosin It Losin It

    “post-djent”
It sorta makes sense, they’re not straight up Djent, like all those derivitive bands, they’re mixing it with other genres

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Brendan-McGregor/1179450011 Brendan McGregor

Oh my god, did you fucking say post-djent? LOLOLOL

  • BossBrew

Wow, great to hear Chris again. Interestingly enough I have been following ex-members of Periphery (Travis Orbin, Chris Barretto, Casey Sabol) and have enjoyed their new projects more than Periphery’s new material. Honestly I can’t stand Spencer. Can’t wait for an LP from Ever Forthright.

  • Admiral Powerhouse

Fucking outstanding my local lads Ironhide made it onto MetalSucks, they deserve it. Sick shit.

  • Kye

Even if they didn’t, I’m going to pretend Ironhide is a Transformers reference so I can like them no matter what they sound like.

  • Ian

I’m a sucker for post-black metal and So Hideous My Love is pretty sweet, thanks for the shout out here, I’ll definitely be getting the EP!

  • Gavin teh gray

Great bands! Can’t wait for the Ever Forthright Full Length! Wonder which label they will go with.

  • Pat

first of all post-djent? as everyone else has said go get fucked. and DAT SAX , seriously amazing though, a lot of the vocal harmonies are also making me shove my hand down my pants.
