CORABI-ERA MÖTLEY CRÜE REHEARSAL FOOTAGE IS FUNNY, SAD, FASCINATING

I don’t know why, but I’ve had John Corabi on the brain recently. Maybe it’s ’cause Corey just wrote about the poor dude? I dunno. But last night I realized I’d never seen any footage of him performing live with Mötley Crüe during his brief tenure with the band, and went looking on YouTube for said footage. I found some okay bootlegs (“Hooligan’s Holiday,” “Dr. Feelgood,” “Home Sweet Home”), and it looks like Corabi was actually doing a pretty good job — which isn’t really surprising. The one eponymous album Corabi made with the band is actually pretty good, even if it was pretty much damned right from the get go.

More interesting, though, is this footage I stumbled upon of Corabi and the The Crüe rehearsing. It’s professionally filmed, although for what, I have no idea, and it’s been on YouTube since 2008, so I’m kinda surprised that no one ever sent it to me before. But I love this kinda shit. I mean, I’m obviously never going to rehearse with Mötley Crüe, so this is a pretty interesting look into that process. It’s fun to see how these guys actually interact with one another, y’know? (My favorite part might be Mick Mars getting pissy become a tech scuffed the floor. Seriously.) Plus, it turns out Tommy Lee was always retarded, if that’s news to you.

More after the jump!

    YES!!!

Double yes – Corabi is one of the great underappreciated vocalists in rock. I find it ironic that the lone Crue album with him as lead singer was titled “Motley Crue”, because yes, that was setting up for the fail. But it didn’t sound much like old Crue, or new Crue, and could have gone over better as a different band — which is what it was.

The single album from The Scream and the 3 from Union are also worth checking out. All pop-metal/hard rock, but if you don’t automatically turn up your nose at that sort of thing, worth a listen.

Record’s great. If it’d been under a different name, people would have liked it more. Same goes w/ Anthrax. I do like Bush more and I won’t get into that age old debate, etc. But, if Sound of White Noise is released under a different name, that record is considered CLASSIC

1994 was the year of criminally underrated releases in rock. Between this, King’s X’s Dogman and Testament’s Low, I was wondering why the mainstream’s head was so far up their collective asses.

    Great find.

+ Shotgun Messiah “Violent New Breed”

“Violent New Breed” was released in 1993 as far as I know.

What Blake said — i love all 3 of those records.

Also, it’s weird to see Motley actually working on music, instead of driving drunk or making sex tapes.

Great call on Dogman…criminally overlooked just like the band themselves…

wow…they seem like regular dudes here, even kinda nerdy sometimes!

still definitely some remnants of their 80′s fashion sense here and there (bandanas, etc), and Nikki hadn’t come close to finding the overall image that he’s been carefully projecting for a long time now. Mick and Tom both look much healthier than they do now.

interesting footage! and that s/t album was really fucking good – i bought it the week it came out, and i think it’s about time to listen to it again.

Wow. Memories. I used to roadie for a band that rehearsed at that studio (back then it was called Audible). It’s in Burbank. Only three rooms. Crüe is in the biggest one in these videos, though anyone could rent the big room if it was available. Twice a week for about three years we drove into that parking lot.

    Good times…

    The Corabi record is awesome.

Best thing they’ve ever done. Apart from Pamela Anderson.

  • Mongorian

love how they were all taking advantage of the fact they no longer had to look like women by growing beards.

  • Binkles

I think I bought this, far beyond driven, and jar of flies all around the same time…good days.

I’ve always been a sucker for behind the scenes, studio footage. And since I’ve taken to re-read The Dirt, these videos are actually a great visual companion for the Corabi chapters. Good post Axl!
