LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, NERGAL HAS RE-ENTERED THE BUILDING

Monday, May 9th, 2011 at 12:00pm by

So in October, Behemoth will kick off their first tour since Nergal was diagnosed with, a subsequently successfully completed treatment for, leukemia (read Anso DF’s incredible interview with the singer/guitarist — his first since his diagnosis — here). But as it turns out, those performances will not be Nergal’s very first time back on stage — ’cause that event has this past Friday night, when he did a guest spot with a band I’m not familiar with, Fields of the Nephilim, in Katowice, Poland (video above). Which is obviously GREAT FUCKING NEWS.

Here’s what the man himself had to say about his first time back in front of a crowd:

“I just came off stage…Katowice, Poland. It was my first performance after the transplant. I don’t remember when the last time I was THAT nervous. First of all, I had to join one of my favorite bands ever, true legends, Fields Of The Nephilim…secondly, I’m still not 100% in shape so I didn’t know how my body would react. I would risk saying I’m maybe 60% of what I used to be…but still progressing!

“Anyway, We did a song ‘Penetration’ together with Carl McCoy and Co. What a blast I have to tell you. I had a serious adrenaline rush and it was such a boost of energy I can’t even describe. My mouth dried out after 30 seconds so I could hardly breathe but the energy wouldn’t let me stop. I was carried away. The moment I saw the crowd, I felt this double bass pounding underneath my feet…I was in trance. I’m counting days ’til we come back with Behemoth full time. 5 months to go…huh.”

This footage obviously isn’t top-notch, but Nergal sounds like he’s in great shape to me.

I don’t know what else to say, except… YYYYYYAAAAAAYYYY NERGAL! Glad to have you back, dude.

haha, this is awesome. So happy to see that he made a recovery!

That being said, Nergal is looking like a Williamsberg hipster there! Love it!

        hahaha that is sooo true!

Thought this putz was out of the game… let’s hope the ‘Behemoth coming back full time’ is an idle threat.

Fields of the nephilim is the most metal non-metal band ever… They play this goth twang kind of deal from down under. Pretty cool if you are into that sort of thing.

    • feaisb

      indeed, great band!

    • KvltWalter

Yeah Fields of the Nephilim is legendary in the world of gothic rock, one of the genre’s top bands along with the Sisters of Mercy and The Mission UK (but nowhere near as big as The Cure if you want to group them in with the genre)

      • mt

Great band as opposed to the utter drivel that is Behemoth.

        • The Greys

I agree with Kvltwalter: FOTN, in the earlier days of their career, were goth pioneers, and were every bit as good (better, really) than the Sisters of Mercy or The Mission UK. “Dawnrazor,” “Fields of the Nephilim” and the live album, “Earth Inferno” were alll terrific.

Later, however, FOTN reinvented themselves as a sorta thrash metal band. It didn’t really work for me … but I do recommend their earlier albums.

          • mt

Dawnrazor is what I’m most familiar with. I checked out the original of the song that Nergal is singing on there and was less than impressed.

Fields is very similar to Sisters of Mercy, Nergal is a HUGE fan of both!

I’m not the biggest Behemoth fan but I’ve been watching Nergal’s progress since the diagnosis, especially after reading his awesome rebuttal to online wankery. I’m glad to see him back in action.

  • reznik

i love fields of nephilim i cant stand behemoth

    • The Apostate

      Thanks for letting us know.

  • David B.

Fuck everyone that’s talks shit on Behemoth. They’re a great band and quit hating.

  • steverazor

I love both. Behemoth’s cover of Penetration might be my favorite metal cover of all time. It is on the Slaves Shall Serve EP. Nergal always does interesting covers and has eclectic taste. He is also a huge Killing Joke fan.

I personally like Behemoth, but each person is certainly entitled to like or not like whoever they want to. That Nergal, or indeed anyone can kick a potentially fatal illness is always good news for all of us because someday medicine may finally kick cancer’s ass for good. I doubt that’ll happen in the States because the medical industry and pharmaceutical industry can’t make money off well people.
I predict the cure will come from Europe or somewhere that doesn’t have a medicine-for-obscene-profit scheme getting in the way. But once it’s out and certified, U.S. drug makers and hospitals will have to eat their own shit because if the vaccine isn’t available here, we’ll go get it.
Meanwhile, I hope Nergal has a complete recovery and has Behemoth out rocking and pissing off organized religion soon as possible. And dudes, just because somebody doesn’t like your favorite band, that doesn’t make them wrong, and those who like to rag on bands they don’t like, fine. Don’t buy their music or go to their shows. But metal fans are supposed to be smarter than other music types, and we can start by allowing each other their own opinions without a bunch of childish insults, don’t you agree?

  • Lucifersmile

How can someone who writes for a music blog not fucking know who Fields of the Nephilim are?
