UNEARTH SIT BACK AND “WATCH IT BURN”

If “Ruination of the Lost,” the new Unearth track we debuted a couple of weeks back, got you all hot n’ bothered, then have I got some news for you: Lambgoat is now streaming another new Unearth tune, “Watch it Burn.” In a statement that accompanies the debut, vocalist Trevor Phipps notes that the song features “a melodic bridge late in the song much like some of our older material.” Unless my pot-addled brain is forgetting an obvious example from the last couple of Unearth albums, it really has been some time since the band experimented with clean vocals; I’m very curious to see if fans get into it now, or throw a total hissy-fit. I’m guessing it will be the latter, but maybe I’m not giving them enough credit.

Headbang here, and then do or do-not throw such a hissy fit in our comments section. Unearth’s latest offering, Darkness in the Light, on July 5 via Metal Blade. The band will been on  the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival this summer along with Megadeth, Machine Head, In Flames, Trivium, Suicide Silence, All Shall Perish, Kingdom of Sorrow, Red Fang, and some other bands whose sets you can use as time for napping/drinking/beating the post-show parking lot traffic jam. Unearth pits are crazy places, so be careful out there, kids!

I’m all for clean vocals, but the ones on this song are awful. The rest of the song kicks ass though.

It reminds me of the oncoming storm, which is cool. That album pretty much changed my view of heavy music.

I actually dislike the outro breakdown much more than the clean vocal section. To me, it sounds like some super-boring early norma jean shit.

Hey, more breakdowns! Suhhhpwwiiiiiseeee! Unearth can write some very catchy riffs. Vocals are consistently terrible, but largely superfluous anyway to why people listen to Unearth.

    Sounds good to me!

Unearth are on a Spinal Tap pace, with their revolving door of drummers.

love it! and i enjoyed the clean vox. was a surprise (i didn’t read the article before i listened) cos they haven’t used them since the oncoming storm. that’s 3 for 3 now so i’m looking forward to this album.

Wow cool to see some love for Unearth! I’ve never had a problem with clean vocals as long as their done right and not autotuned to death. But I know some people disagree. Cool song though!

    RIFFS!

Also, I like the clean vocals. Kinda reminiscent of the cleans on the latest As I Lay Dying record. They add some character to the song without going overboard.

Unearth is one of my top 5 metal bands. Just can’t get enough.

  • yzermantiis

I really like this band. Solid catchy metal

THIS ISNT THE UNEARTH I GREW UP WITH FUCK U METALSUCKS FOR SUCKING THE CORPORATE HORSECOCK AND MAKING ME LISTEN TO CLEAN VOCALS HHIIISSSS MUSIC USED TO MEAN SOMETHING HHHIIIIIIIIIIISSSSSSSSSSSSSHISSS

No, I actually wish Unearth had more material that didn’t sound the exact same as their old stuff. I like them a lot and they do well with their narrow range of expression, but fuck, can I get something new on occasion (like this)? One of Metalsucks’ writers has called Unearth the Slayer of metalcore, but fuck, even Slayer has Divine Intervention and God Hates Us All.

Good stuff. I look forward to this album.

I have no problem with clean vocals, but if you’re going to do them, then actually DO them. Sounds to me like a guest spot by Phil LaBonte from Auto-Tune That Remains.

  • PatrickSTL

I guess I’m the only one who thinks this might be the best Unearth song yet.

i’ve been a diehard unearh fan forever being from new england and all. and i dont mind the clean vocals and the off pitch singing it just reminds me that there music is true and they dont need to molest there vocals in protools they dont give a fuck and for that i commend them for not using autotune
