INFORMAL POLL: WHO IS DUMBER, KORN FANS OR SILENT HILL FANS?

Monday, June 13th, 2011 at 2:00pm by

I can’t believe I’m about to stick up for Korn. I mean, I guess I’m not technically sticking up for them, but… the enemy of my enemy is not always my friend, y’know?

So. In case you don’t know, Silent Hill is a long-running horror video game franchise that has even been turned into a terrible a movie. And the latest installment in the series, Silent Hill: Downpour, is coming out later this year, and now Korn have been commissioned to write a theme song for the game. And apparently there’s a faction of hardcore Silent Hill fans who don’t want any Korn music in their game, because, well, Korn are a fucking awful band and an embarrassment to all that the human race is capable of achieving.

And normally I would be all for some good old fashioned nerd rage over such an issue, because, like I said, Korn blow entire herds of goats in a single sitting. Unfortunately, though, it turns out that these Silent Hill fans are idiots, too.

Below is the petition they wrote up protesting Korn’s involvement with their beloved franchise. Not only is it incredibly self-serious and written by people who apparently think that the Silent Hill games are a bastion of artistic integrity, but it’s use of grammar is, um, creative, to put it mildly.

“Most Silent Hill fans are extremely sad to see that it has been decided to use Korn to make their theme song in the upcoming Silent Hill : Downpour.

“There is many reasons for this, a nu metal band simply does not belong in silent hill and especially not one that deals with teenage angst themes, that is not what silent hill is or will ever be and a nu metal band that was cool in the late 90′s and early 00′s will do no good for silent hill as a game.

“Neither will it do much good for the games reputation, we have already seen gaming journalists with headlines like “Barf! Korn to do Silent Hill: Downpour’s theme song”, some people say bad press is better than no press but do we really want the silent hill franchise to be known as the game people make fun of or the deep and amazing experience we usually know it for? Korn has never done anything that is remotely fitting for the silent hill atmosphere and represents everything that Silent Hill isn’t.

“We don’t know if it’s Vatra who has made this decision or if it’s Konami pushing it on them but it’s sad and shows a complete lack of respect for the fans and we hope that Konami will very unlikely cancel this deal they made with Korn or at the very least show our disapproval with this. We hope that Silent Hill Downpour is a quality title but the news of Korn as the main theme makers makes us believe that Konami don’t understand silent hill or its fanbase one bit, the silent hill fanbase is very dedicated and don’t take news like this very lightly, reading silent hill forums and facebook pages shows a collective depression among fans.

“Please Konami, show some respect for silent hill and the fans and don’t have Korn do the main theme for Silent Hill : Downpour.”

As of this writing, more than seven-hundred fans have signed to petition to show that they “hope that Konami will very unlikely cancel this deal,” which I assume means they want Konami to cancel the deal, even though they know that outcome is very unlikely. And they’re right — I don’t have any actual sales figures in front of me, but I imagine this game will sell seven-hundred copies the first ten minutes it’s available for pre-order. My point being, this petition ain’t gonna do jack shit.

But at least it gave us all a chuckle.

Of course, what I would REALLY like to see is Korn fans fighting back. As we’ve previously documented here on MetalSucks, Kornholers  are incredibly adept internet debaters, so watching them go head-to-head with the Silent Hill squad would truly be a can’t-miss battle of wits.

In all fairness, the movie is one of the best game to movie adaptations i’ve seen yet, though that isn’t saying much, they nailed the atmosphere pretty well, until the end..

Akira Yamaoka IS silent hill, he should be the only one doing the music, guess he’s doing other stuff now.

      i don’t normally +1 but i couldn’t have said it better

    • SuperTylerRPG

Um, excuse me? Do you NOT remember the Street Fighter movie!? You clearly need your head examined!!!1!!!

But seriously, Silent Hill is/was pretty bad ass. It scared the shit out of me as young child. Korn isn’t scary… or at least not the same kind of scary.

    • I_liek_mitals

I wasn’t overly impressed with the movie, but yeah, Akira should be the only one doing music for the games. The only game I’ve played is SH: Origins, but the soundtrack on that game was great and I’ve heard some of the music from the other games as well. Korn definitely wouldn’t do the series justice if I had to guess.

        “Akira IS Silent Hill”

        +10000000

If you never got into Silent Hill, simply put, you will just never understand why fans have reacted this way, and it doesn’t do me much good to try to convince a non-believer at this point (and certainly not at this venue). And yes, my stomach turned when I read the release about korn doing this.

Ill never forget being twelve and sitting scared to death at 3 in the morning playing the first silent hill. I super shitty tv, super dark basement, and creeping my way through a school trying not to get killed by little kids. If it wasn’t for Akira’s work the game would have been just another gory resident-evil copy.

If you were to look at my last.fm from my college years you would see the Akira Yamaoka as by far my most listened to artist. I spent countless hours sitting in the campus library with the ambient soundtracks to these games playing into my earholes trying to study.

You see, the sounds of Silent Hill define the game. They create the world more than the visuals, believe it or not. Seeing anyone other than Akira, let alone a has-been-hanging-on-for-dear-life band like Korn (yes I used to love them, everyone growing up in the nineties did).

To me its an injustice to longtime fans of the series. And lets face it….who the hell else plays silent hill these days?

  • yzermantiis

The SH games are fucking awful….so I don’t see a problem having shit record shit for shit……

    • El Peras

You must have played them the wrong way, they took the gory atmosphere of Resident Evil and rebaptized, from a totally different perspective, the face of the survival horror for a whole generations of fans…just saying.

    • The Overmatt

Not enough killstreaks and leaderboards for you bro?

  • dread

I thought the first Silent Hill was awesome (as far as I got in it). Totally yanked my chain a couple of times. And I certainly don’t want Korn anywhere near anything I might ever consume.
Is there anyway Korn could be limited to writing songs for the Gap or Walmart or poker on TV? How about a Korn theme song for Jehovah Witnesses or Mormons or something?
Also, I was confused: “the Silent Hill games are a bastion of artistic integrity, but it’s use of grammar is, um, creative”
But it is use of grammar is creative?
Is that supposed to be a joke, or creative use of grammar.

  • Steph

Fair enough, I haven’t played any of the recent games but the first 3 are great and so is the music. They should get the Axis of Perdition to do the theme.

haha this was an entertaining read. i always enjoyed the silent hill games since they were out on ps1, and i agree korn doesnt fit the atmosphere (or any atmosphere for that matter), but who cares? i always push start and never listen to theme songs anyway. or the story. unless its some sort of rpg.

  • dread

GODDAMMIT! I ended my question with a period and fucked my own grammar up while mocking someone else for it. I despise myself.

    • MoonSnake

Yeah, it was pretty funny. Happens to the best of us

  • Curmudgeon

The first 3 SH games are amazing. I can understand not wanting Korn to do a theme song, hell, I don’t want any band doing a theme song for the game. The guy who does the soundtrack for Dexter is doing the soundtrack for this game and from what I’ve heard so far, he’s doing a pretty fair deal.

The only time I signed an online petition, I was like 16 and it was to either make an Orgazmo 2 or Spaceballs 2. Yeah, I felt like I should be wearing a special ed helmet after signing that shit. Those petitions are just ego stroking bullshit, nobody important reads or considers them, and it’s a good thing they don’t.

Anyway, prepare for butthurt nerdrage from both parties to follow in the comments.

    • turds

I believe I signed one once for a Legend of Dragoon 2.

      aint sorry.

  • Poopenshaft

Never cared for the SH games but the movie was fucking awesome, you really have no idea wtf you’re talking about. Christophe Gans is an incredible director and storyteller who knows what he wants from a scene and knows how to set the mood perfectly for the audience. Haven’t you people ever seen Brotherhood of the Wolf?! Yea that’s like one of my favorite movies of all time….of all time!

    • Steph

The first half of the movie is good, after that it goes off a cliff faster than In Flames’ career.

      • Planeswalker

Rofl. This comment just made this post worth reading.

  • Kresimo

the games have gone downhill since the 4th installment. they have allllll had amazing music. I doubt one korn song is really going to do any damage. Plus it’s not like they are going to do a crap nu~metal song. Odds are they’ll do a creepy ambient tune. or something. blah

I never liked Silent Hill and I only went through a Korn phase for a few months when I was 16, so could care less either way.

However, that link to MetalSucks’s Board to Death column was a riot, bring it back! You can even poke fun at Morbid Angel’s message board for some cheap laughs.

I love the games, and the soundtracks to the games are amazing. If Korn is rejected to do the theme song and Akira Yamaoka is too busy to contribute, I personally think that Sunn O))) ft Attila would create a masterpiece for the game and soundtrack.

  • Braston

The first SH came out when I was like seven and it scared me, looking back now it’s sort of cheesy, but I can’t help but agree with the SH fans because I hate Korn. Even more so now with that dubstep stuff. :/ sorry just can’t get into it. With the letter was written with more integrity though.

    • MachinaeSupremacist

      …Dubstep?

  • canea

I love me some Silent Hill – one of the few franchises I look forward to each installment.

I know they don’t make any sense and are generally kind of clunky, but I still enough the vibe and nostalgia I get from them.

    Korn: not so much.

  • colbow

well SH fans have a point right there.. not becaouse it’s a great game or anything but korn simply doesn’t fit for that game and it’s for damn sure…

Why not use the CONVERGE song – Downpour?

  • Marchosias

The game was too late to be original (in my opinion, at least)as it struck me as Resident Evil’s next installment under a different name. Korn, on the other hand – I wouldn’t call them original, they just plain suck. put them together along with a new installment, and you have a trifecta of suckery. No care, no play, no listen.

  • http://twitter.com/realofficernarc aaron m

it’s obvious from the progression of the series that konami hasn’t given two shits about silent hill for quite a while. i haven’t played “shattered memories”, but “homecoming” really did nothing for me. so, given the track record of the series lately, i’m pretty sure that “downpour” is going to be toasted shit. it only makes sense to pair it up with the shittiest band in metal.

personally, i just like to ignore every game that came out after 2, pretty much.

also, the silent hill movie was crap. oh sure, you can look at it and call it the best video game adaptation around, but that’s like calling it the least smelly shit you’ve taken. it doesn’t change the fact that it’s not a good movie, barely qualifying as entertainment.

  • Q

While I agree with not having korn do the theme as this petition is trying to fight against, it was terribly written and kind of a joke. That said silent hill is probably one of my favorite series of games but its been on the decline. No yamaoka for this one and team silent hasn’t developed a game since SH4. So korn doing the theme probably cant hurt this series anymore

Why does it say ‘Korn’ in this “article” everywhere it should say ‘Nirvana’?

ANYWAY I THINK LIMP FUKIN BIZKIT HAS A NEW ALBUM SHUT THE FUCK UP N GET TO IT!!!

    • Jimbo

I desperately hope this is a serious tirade against Nu Metal fans, as I would love for there to be such an erudite and considered individual out there, campaigning to save us all from the folly of listening to Korn etc (I’ll make no bones about it, I do love me some Korn). Sadly though, I’m fairly sure the above individual falls into the category of ‘flaming troll’.

    • Planeswalker

*sigh* You’re the one that has no buisness on this site, because if you knew anything at all, you would know that several of the site’s editors have admitted liking Slipknot, that is including Axl. SO shut the fuck up, chill out, and stop making such a big deal out of nu-metal.
And to throw my two cents in for the hell of it. I actually really like Slipknot and Korn, I also like Slayer, Cannibal Corpse, and Nile. Stop trying to be an elitist asshole and get the fuck off this site.

  • tony

KoRn is just doing a theme song for Silent Hill not complete soundtrack, chill out. When NiN made couple of songs for Quake 3 ppl where pissed but songs turned out to be great. You are overreacting and talking shits about KoRn isn`t normal. There are some people on this world that are still listening and support them.
KoRn is my favourite band bside Ozzy and Iron Maiden.
Go listen to Here To Stay and Thoughtless and than say that KoRn sucks.
Chill out and show some respect…kid

    • BOBBY

well you sounded smart, and u make a good point. no need for jabs at the end there. in fact its because im not a kid and have heard all the korn albums that i can safely say FUCK KORN. Take it how u will i wish someone would have warned me about shitty bands, of course like i said i heard all the albums so obviously no one bothered. I cant even imagine people still listening to that shit. Writer was right you fuckin clowns go on the offensive almost immediately. What do you think of ICP nevermind…..

      • Smelly_Man

im also not a kid and have heard all the korn albums that i can safely say FUCK YOU.

    • yodocq

Best Korn songs are done by Richard Cheese.

    • Jonathon Davis

Sorry, kid, we are a terrible band. Talking shit on us is normal, so you may as well get used to it. We know everything that we write is terrible, we just like buying new pimp coats.

  • Matt

Okey, I am glad that you guys wrote about this matter like a bunch of retards, because then we don’t have to be concerned about the fact that monkeys may/could really have a intelligent opinion. But I got to say, that if you haven’t really played the game and truly understood it, you can’t really get why the fans are whining about it. To me they are really immersive and profound games, and KoRn making the main theme for the newest installment.. is really going to break the immersion for me. I suppose that there is a chance for KoRn to make a decent main theme, but only if they have played the games thoroughly and will make an good effort in making the song sound really different what we have used to hear from KoRn. PS.The grammar skills of the writer maybe isn’t the main point we should be focusing on. He supposedly isn’t speaking english for his native language, and nor do I, if some of you were tempted to whine about my grammar skills too.

I would’ve asked Skrillex to do the main theme.

  • Hell Buddha

I liked the first two Silent Hill games. Back when survival horror games were actually survival horror games – limited ammo with a creepy atmosphere. Not run and shoot. I fucking hated the movie though. I personally like some of Korn’s stuff, mostly because of the Faith no More influence, but their music will not fit this franchise.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Zach-Gates/14209777 Zach Gates

The first two SH games are absolute masterpieces. I’d even venture to say that SH2 is still unparalleled in terms of horror games (Amnesia comes close). Similarly, Korn’s EARLY albums, when the nu-metal idea wasn’t even a genre yet, are still CDs I take for a spin periodically.

At this point, having Korn on a Silent Hill game is just apropos. Both are so far beyond their prime that they’re both milking their respective franchises for however much money the hangers-on are willing to spend. It’s like how the first Saw movie was fucking awesome and it was a slow decline to pure Shit after that.

  • Skanes

No one really gives a fuck because ever since Team Silent stopped making them there really hasn’t been an actual SH game.

  • Jesse

The first movie was terrible. The games were always pretty neat but I don’t usually dig survival-horror games. Best line from the movie for those who have seen it:

“I have MANY names. Right now, I’m the dark side of Alessa.”

Worst child actor I’ve seen in a LONG time.

Silent Hill was a sucky video game and movie but that is no reason to defend Korn.

    FUCK KORN.

  • Kornydude

  • Kam

The writer of this article is a troll. This article is biased and has a title just to provoke fans of Korn to stick up for something which really doesn’t concern them unless they are Silent Hill fans and Silent Hill fans who disagreed by calling them dumb. People who listened to the soundtracks to Silent Hill would probably agree that a Mary Elizabeth McGlynn tune is more appropriate than a song from any metal band. In my opinion, it would probably be a fair compromise with the fans to have Daniel Licht do the theme with McGlynn if possible. I think Daniel Licht could do well on this since he has worked on plenty of horror films in his career. For the record, let it show I have insulted no one in my comment and have used my grammatical skills competently.
